WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR !

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Georgina Butcher and I went to the U3A national annual conference in September in Nottingham. There are now almost 320,000 members and over 900 branches. We went to Breakout Groups. In the Inter-Generational Activity group, various ideas were mentioned. One U3A had current affairs debates with a local school but discontinued them after the children made fun of their visitors. Another idea

was the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and support through mentoring. Mention was also made of contacts with local retirement homes and Age Concern. Age Concern has recently contacted us and we will pursue this. We have also been putting on some activities in a local care home. The Diversity/Social Inclusion in U3A group concentrated mainly on aims and principles but some practical ideas were made including Black History Month October 2013, Silver Day Sunday October 6th, and pre-retirement groups. This prompted me to wonder what pre-retirement groups we had contact with and Bill Garvey, our Publicity Officer is writing to local companies and organizations.

Georgina went to Crisis, What Crisis..? After reviewing Advice Sheet on Waiting Lists, it was made clear that U3As had agreed to encourage and assist new U3As to develop so as to improve access to U3A in the broadest terms. Members need to be periodically reminded of the U3A Guiding Principles. As a rule of thumb, U3As should aim for a number of interest groups that is one tenth of their membership roll.

Professor Russell Foster gave a fascinating talk on Body Clocks, Light and Time. “Embedded within the genes of us are the instructions for a biological clock that marks the passage of approximately 24 hours. Biological clocks help time our sleep patterns, alertness, mood, physical strength, blood pressure and much more.” His research shows that this has effects on health including mental health.

Sue Hennessy spoke about Hidden Depths: Women in the RNLI. For over 180 years images of strong, selfless males have populated the literature of the lifeboat service. But right from the very beginning, women have worked to save lives at sea. Women have been deeply involved in the RNLI; not, it is true, as crew members (they are now - even as coxswain & helmsman) but as the muscles - heaving the boats up and down beaches for launch/recovery, also in the more recognised tea making, fund raising and moral support.

Dear U3A member, As I told you in the last

Newsletter I am handing over the Newsletter Editorship to Stephen Dorff who has been instrumental in updating the membership database. This has involved a huge amount of work and I am sure he will bring a more modern approach to the Newsletter.

I have enjoyed the two years I have spent as Editor and I will continue to be involved in U3A affairs and will have the pleasure of

keeping in touch with many of you.

The U3A is a very wonderful and w o r t h w h i l e organisation and your continued support is where its strength lies so keep up the good work and keep those news items coming into Stephen to make sure you have your say in your Newsletter.

Sincerely, Morris Jones

Hello Everyone, I am Stephen Dorff and I have

agreed to be the new Editor of the Newsletter. Over a period I will be making a few minor changes to the layouts and fonts used and re-arranging some of the content, to make it easier to read. I hope that you will like the results and if you have any comments about things you like or particularly dislike, please let me know. All your suggestions may not be taken on board, but I will follow the general consensus.

I can be contacted on [email protected] and Morris’s original address at [email protected] will also be available for the time

being. One thing that I

would like to see is more short articles submitted by you about the activities which you attend and news-worthy snippets about Harrow U3A. Please give it a go and send me something. Because of space restrictions, I can’t promise to always include articles, but will do my best to fit them in.

Lastly, my thanks go to Morris for his sterling work over the past two years and for his invaluable help and advice in compiling this issue

Stephen Dorff

Chairman’s message cont’d from p.1 John Bercow (Speaker of the House of Commons) talked about The

Modern House of Commons and outlined three significant reforms:

The re-introduction of Urgent Questions where topical public issues are debated.

The democratisation of the Select Committee system, which now sees MPs picked through secret ballot.

The introduction of a House Backbench Business Committee, which decides what topics are discussed by MPs weekly.

It is important that we attend the annual conference of our national move-ment. It is the way in which we can gain from the ideas and experience of others and share our experiences.

Mike Allen, Chairman

MONTHLY SPEAKERS

Talks are on the last Thursday in the month and are held in the Hatch End Suites 1 & 2 at the Harrow Arts

Centre, Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, HA5 4EA. Talks start promptly at 10.30am. For further details please check

the Harrow U3A website or at the HAC Reception notice board. These meetings provide an opportunity for

members from all groups to come together and welcome non-members to meet and hopefully join us.

Announcements and discussions will take place after the speaker has finished.

Thursday morning at 10.30 – 30th January 2014 John Pearson: Blessed are the Cheesemakers

Our first speaker this year will tell us about his passion for dairy and cheese in particular which he gained in

his 26 years with Marks & Spencer. In 2003 he and his team secured champion titles for both Extra Matured

Stilton and Red Leicester. So this is a must for all of us who enjoy cheese and biscuits to finish a lovely meal.

Thursday morning 10.30 – 23th February Eleanor Bloom : Gin and Vice in 18th Century Covent Garden

Eleanor retired as a City of London Police Officer after 34 years service. She is a qualified and accredited

London Tour Guide and conducts guided walks. Her talk covers the rise and fall of the gin craze in Covent

Garden society in the period when 1 in 3 premises were gin houses and 1 in 5 women were harlots.

Thursday morning at 10.30 – 27th March Mike Beach : China – From Confucius to the 21st Century

A return visit by Mike to tell us about one of the most interesting countries in the world. His presentation covers the history of China from the Xia Dynasty around 2000 BC through to the last Dynasty, the Qing, which came to an end in 1912. Highlights include the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army.

Thursday morning at 10.30 – 24th April Gerry Hanson : England my England

In his introduction our speaker makes the point that it has all been done before and so it has. But in his

collection he has gone beyond the normal boundaries of an anthology by including speeches and articles as

well as the expected songs. The very varied selection of material will have a pleasing balance of serious and

humorous works.

An important message to all Members and Group Leaders

Please remember to switch off mobile phones or select “silent ring” during lectures, talks and

other activities, as “ ringing and bleeping” are very distracting to other members. Please also

refrain from using tablets with a stylus or any other gadgets that can create a noise which could

disturb the concentration of members attending lectures.

If a member is not well, has been in hospital, or they have not attended meetings for a while, let

me know so that I can check on their welfare. Please do not remove them from your register until

we know if they will be returning. Also, please let me know if a member has been bereaved. Thank

you.

ART: LIFE STUDY CLASSES

To study Life (the nude) painting and drawing is a privilege where we learn much about the discipline of

drawing, proportion, anatomy and the expression of the human figure and personality. It is a skill which has

been treasured for centuries and is always alive as an art form- it never ceases to amaze and entrance.

I have been teaching Life and Portraiture for a long time. Whilst I also conduct workshops elsewhere,

Harrow U3A has been a really rewarding environment for my Life tutoring. Indeed, my models, who work at

other important art establishments have all said that they love working with our U3A Life class students.

In my classes, we try different techniques; we do long studies but also work with movement and spon-

taneity; but importantly, a classical approach underpins our work. We also have laughs!

I welcome those who have some experience in drawing, up to the advanced artists who want to share

in this wonderful art form, but space is limited so apply first to me at [email protected].

The photos shown on the back page Photocall are examples of my classes at work - in Harrow U3A

and in Maribor, Slovenia where I am now guest tutor.

CLASSICAL MUSIC APPRECIATION

Classical Music Appreciation is a presentation in concert format of music by great composers as well

as lesser-known ones, performed by international orchestras and soloists.

During this term we have heard Schubert’s Piano Trio No.1 in B flat, Haydn’s Symphony No.6 ‘Le Matin’

and Giuliani’s Guitar Concerto. We have also listened to Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No.2, Weiniasky’s Violin

Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3. By way of contrast, we have heard music from as far

afield as South America by Mangore and Chaves and Villa Lobos. This last composer conducted an orchestra

consisting only of cellos, (his own chosen instrument ) which was certainly very different and unusual. In

another programme we heard music of De Falla ‘Nights in the Gardens of Spain’ and two Spanish songs sung

by Placido Domingo. With the French composer Eric Satie’s haunting piano-music was included Saint-Saens’

‘Carnival of the Animals’, and the music of the great Russian composers and Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms

are frequently included, as well as the English composers. The list of composers is endless.

Join us for informal concerts on Wednesday mornings at 10.15 am. A printed programme is provided for

each presentation.

Irene Frener.

Due to illness, our present Premises Officer is no longer able to continue

and we are in urgent need of a replacement. This is a non-committee post, usu-

ally not very time consuming except during a 4-6 week period in May/June

would need a computer, and there is always support and help if and when

needed.

If you are interested in taking on this role, please phone Rhoda Luer on

GIFT AID First, a big thank you to all the members who have signed a Gift Aid declaration, enabling Harrow U3A, as

a registered charity, to claim back the tax you have paid on your subscription. It really does help to keep our costs down as far as possible.

If you haven’t signed up, please consider doing so. You can print off a form from our website, www.harrowu3a.co.uk, or ask for one to be posted from [email protected] or 020 8422 0895.

This year, a new wording for the declaration was introduced by HMRC, and we are asked to draw the attention of previous signatories to it. Some members have been asked to re-sign this new wording, but most of you do not need to take any action beyond reading this:

Gift Aid Declaration Please treat as Gift Aid donations all qualifying gifts of money made today, in the past 4 years and in the

future. I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand that Harrow U3A will reclaim 28p of tax on every £1 that I gave up to 5th April 2008 and will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give on or after 6th April 2008.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

DAY TRIP TO ELY—JUNE OR JULY 2014

Ely is a delightful city, with all the main

attractions within easy walking distance of

each other. We envisage leaving Stanmore

at 8.45 am and Hatch End at 9 am and get

to Ely at 11 am, where we can stop for a

coffee (possibly booked but at your own

expense). We can then have a guided tour

around the Norman cathedral and leave

you about 1½ hours for lunch and to look

round the High Street; it is a short stroll to

the river. There are a great many choices of

places to eat, or you can bring your own

sandwiches. After lunch we could have a

guided tour of Oliver Cromwell’s home.

We will then leave for the return journey.

The tour would probably take place on a

Tuesday or Wednesday (Thursday is market

day and is very crowded). We do not have

an accurate costing for this but think it

would be in the region of £27 - £29.

Please let us know if you are interested

because we do not want to go to the

expense of arranging this if there is not

enough interest - send us the tear off strip

LONGER VISITS

LIVERPOOL PAST & PRESENT TOUR

March 23rd – 27th 2014

5 days/4nights – half- board Atlantic Tower Hotel on Waterfront. By Coach.

As this is the 50th Anniversary year of the Beatles, Liverpool is certain to be in a festive

mood and therefore a good time to visit. But there is a great deal more to this city than the

Beatles connection. It is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was also European

Capital of Culture in 2008. Its location on the broad stretch of the tidal Mersey river and its

large docks made Liverpool the second seaport of England in the 18th

century and has given

the city its rich history and exciting character.

It has an exceptional collection of architectural treasures

including a large number of beautifully preserved Georgian

town houses and two of Britain’s most remarkable

churches, the huge Anglican cathedral and the very

unusual “Paddy’s Wigwam”, the Catholic cathedral. Some

of the grand mercantile palaces remain together with a few

imposing office buildings from the early 1900s, notably the

Royal Liver Building with its famous Liver Birds which

supposedly gave the city its name.

Among the old dock buildings many have turned into

fashionable shops, bars and restaurants but others are under preservation orders, making

an attractive mix of old and new. To get the best view of the city we take a river trip on the

traditional Mersey ferry.

One of the highlights of the tour is an excursion to the delightful Port Sunlight garden

village. Built in the late 1800s for the workers of the Lever Company it took 30 different

architects to create a unique model village which includes the magnificent Lady Lever Art

Gallery, home to a collection of Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces as well as works by Constable

and Turner.

On our coach drive to and from Liverpool we take the opportunity to stop at interesting

places for our lunch breaks. One will be the Wedgwood factory where those who wish can

also inspect the factory outlet!

COST: £410 per person sharing a room; £60 single supplement. Only a few places left, so

contact Inga Stone as soon as possible.

TOURS & VISITS BOOKINGS & RESERVATIONS

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM TOURS AND VISITS COMMITTEE

Please be aware that when you send a cheque with your application for a place

on a tour or a visit, it might not be banked for some time.

Not until we know that the tour has enough support to make it viable do we

present the cheque. It is simply not possible for an organisation such as ours

to deposit individual or small groups of cheques for an event which may not

take place immediately, or might be cancelled.

Another reason for delaying the deposit is the fact that frequently someone

who has already paid is unable to attend because of illness...or a family

demand. If so, it is a simpler operation to return the cheque than issuing and

sending out a Harrow U3A cheque as reimbursement – which would not

always be possible if payment to the venue has already been made.

Would you please, therefore, notify the organiser of the event if you close or

change your account on which your cheque is drawn when you see that it has

not appeared on your statement.

If your cheque is returned it is unfortunately necessary to make a charge in

addition to requiring another cheque for the visit.

We are sure you will appreciate that we cannot operate in the same way as a

commercial company. We just do our best within the restrictions mentioned

above.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

40 stalwart U3A members assembled at two locations, The Chase in Stanmore and The Harrow Art Centre and were duly collected by a Hearns luxury coach to be whisked off to Portsmouth for a visit to the brand new “Mary Rose” exhibition. This is located in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard next to “ HM S Vi c t o r y ” . T h i s exhibition is housed in a custom made exhibition building situated, as it happens, just yards from where the ship was originally constructed in 1510.

The “Mary Rose” was raised from the bottom of the Solent in 1982 in an emotive moment watched by HRH Prince Charles and other notables including our very own Jack Kushner who was on assignment with the Canadian Broadcast ing

Corporation to cover this event.

This magnificent museum houses the remains of the ship and the sprays of special chemicals, which have played on the timbers for the last three years, have now been turned off and it is so much easier to see the remains of the ship and imagine how it would have looked in its prime.

There are 19,000 artefacts beautifully displayed in glass viewing rooms and all these items have been reclaimed from the site of the wreck which claimed 500 lives when it overturned and sank in the Solent just a few hundred yards from shore. The electronic displays show where each item was located on the ship and how it would have looked when it was in its original condition and what

its purpose was at the time. Even the skeleton of the ship’s dog, known as “Hatch”, has been reclaimed and is on display with reconstruction of how he would have looked on the day.

There are several other historic ships on display in the Historic Dockyard including HMS Victory (VERY little head-room!); HMS Warrior, the world’s first iron-hulled warship, which was launched in 1860 and changed naval warfare for ever; and many other attractions.

It was a fine but cold day with a strong breeze and we eventually sought shelter in the Georgian Tea Rooms for a very welcome “Cuppa” before meeting the coach for a comfortable journey home.

Our thanks to Toni and Jack for a well organised and extremely informative trip.

VISIT to the “MARY ROSE”

I, along with several other

members of Harrow U3A,

attended the first 3-day

London Summer School at The

St Bride Foundation. Thanks

must go to Gwen Wright and

the London Region team for

arranging this event.

Each day contained nine

different workshops, covering

Art, Science, Architecture,

Music and Literature, the

overall theme being London.

My first workshop was about

Adulterated Food throughout

the centuries. Forget horse-

burgers, we are talking really

nasty things which were put

into food to disguise lack of

proper ingredients. No-one

knew how many people died

as a result and very few people

were prosecuted.

A talk on the history of

the Royal Institution

highlighted why Albemarle

Street became London’s first

one way street due to the R.I’s

popularity. I learned about

London’s hidden rivers and

attended a beautifully

illustrated talk on London

Underground’s original Art

Deco posters.

I would urge you to

attend next year. It was a great

way to learn and also to meet

other U3A members.

RECENT ACTIVITIES cont’d

On the 19th September, 14

members boarded a coach

with their luggage which was

not seen again until they

arrived in their cabins on Fred

Olsen’s BALMORAL. At 7 pm

that evening all gathered in

the Marquee bar which was

reserved for our group where

we were served drinks and

canapés. We then descended

to the Ballindalloch Restaurant

for our dinner where we had

arranged for 2 tables of 7 next

to each other, after which

t h e r e w a s e v e n i n g

entertainment.

The following day was

spent at sea where we could

partake of numerous activities

such as bridge, talks, dance

class, hi-tech clinic and a

classical recital. The captain

g a v e a m i d - d a y

announcement that there

would be slight seas but

because the ship is fully

stabilized we hardly noticed

any difference. The rest of the

cruise seas were perfectly

calm. That night there was a

cocktail party with the

Captain and an opportunity to

have a photo taken with him.

The next few days there

wer e v ar i ous out ing s

including a visit to the

Arquebus Museum which told

us about the German

occupation in WWII and a

visit to the Briksdal Glacier

where a coach took us half

way up the mountain where

we boarded open golf-type

buggies to take us near to the

top. The scenery was fantastic

but we were drenched to the

skin on the only day that the

weather was unkind to us.

In beautiful sunshine, we

arrived at Flam Station where

the railway had been built by

the Germans. We boarded the

train where we had a fantastic

guide. The train went through

several tunnels and passed

many waterfalls and beautiful

scenery. We changed trains at

Myrdal and headed to Voss

where a delicious lunch was

laid on for us at a local hotel.

After this we boarded a coach

to the Stalheim Hotel for tea

and where there was an

unbelievable view of the

valley 550 metres below. We

then re-boarded our coach

which took us down the

steepest road in Europe with

13 hairpin bends and back to

the ship in Flam.

On other days we visited

Bergen, which is second in

size to the Norwegian capital

Oslo. We went by coach on a

half day city tour and then up

the funicular railway where

we were able to look down on

the city and port. Wednesday

we enjoyed yet another city

tour in Stavanger where there

are many pretty ancient

houses built on narrow

winding cobbled streets. We

ended our tour with a visit to

the Cathedral built around

1125.

Every evening we joined

with those of the group who

had taken different tours to

exchange views and chat and

enjoy each others’ company.

On the last evening after

dinner we all went to the

Neptune lounge where the

Crew gave us a spectacularly

e n t e r t a i n i n g s h o w .

Afterwards we returned to the

Ballindalloch restaurant where

there was a midnight display

of food and ice carvings

followed by a buffet.

We arrived back in

Southampton early on the

morning of the 27th September

where our coach was waiting

to take us back to Harrow.

MY LITTLE SATNAV by Hans Spielman

I have a little Satnav, It sits there in my car; A Satnav is a driver’s friend It tells you where you are.

I have a little Satnav, I’ve had it all my life; It’s better than the normal ones My Satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions, Especially how to drive; “It’s thirty miles an hour”, it says “You’re doing thirty-five”.

It tells me when to stop and start, And when to use the brake; And tells me that it’s never ever Safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red, And when it goes to green; It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene.

It lists the vehicles just in front, And all those to the rear; And taking this into account It specifies my gear.

I’m sure no other driver Has so helpful a device, For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice.

It fills me up with counselling, Each journey’s pretty fraught; So why don’t I exchange it And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I’m properly fed; It washes all my shirts and things And keeps me warm in bed.

Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I only wish that now and then I could turn the damn thing off!!!!

SHARED LEARNING PROJECTS

Throughout the year we are informed by U3A head office of Shared Learning Projects sponsored by various museums, seats of learning and other similar establishments. These Projects are circulated to all local U3As and cover a wide variety of subjects and usually comprise about a dozen participants selected from all the applicants. For example, in 2013 my wife Lynne (our ‘Hon. Sec.’) was involved in a Project at the archives of the Museum of London re-cataloguing and re-packaging many of their artifacts. I, together with Sheila Lowe, joined a Project at the British Library which entailed each person researching and writing a paper on different aspects of the History of Science in London, now published and kept at the British Library.

These SLPs are immensely interesting and rewarding. Notices regarding new Projects are regularly issued by U3A head office and are circulated by e-mail—another good reason to ensure that you are included in the Harrow U3A Group E-Mail List (see page 18). Alternatively, the information is also on the head office web site www.u3a.org.uk .

COMPUTING TOP TIPS

Using your keyboard can often be faster than using the mouse. Key combinations execute the following functions: Ctrl-X = Cut Ctrl-C = Copy Ctrl-V=Paste Ctrl-S = Save Ctrl-P = Print

When replying to an e-mail, always use Reply to send to one person, rather than Reply All which sends your response to everyone on the original mailing list. You may recall reading in the newspapers about the embarrassing problems caused by sending what was intended to be a private e-mail to everybody.
