A word from the President

Can you believe that this is our fifth year, with many returning and new families? As the daughter of a diplomat, I was born in Paris but raised in both the United States and France. Part of my studies took place in Houston, where I taught art to children with the Creative Alternatives organization, known today as City Art Works. Graduating from the National Superior School of Modern Art in Paris, I worked as a gallery curator for seventeen years in Madrid, Paris, and all the way to Mexico. For the past four years, I have lived in Houston, involved in the promotion of French culture, with a focus on French contemporary art. Mother to a seven-year-old trilingual and tricultural daughter, I hoped to find her French courses so she could reinforce her knowledge of the language and the culture. With EFGH, I not only found great and affordable teaching, but also a location close to home. Today, I want to help promote this service to families who wish to either give the gift of French to their children or simply maintain their children’s skills in the language. The love for different languages and cultures opened so many doors for me during my career as an art curator that I feel compelled to participate in this beautiful endeavour of EFGH not only for my daughter’s well-being but also for the benefit of other children.

News from the Board

I have been an expatriate for almost 30 years now, living in Italy, North and West Africa, the United States, the Middle East and Asia. I continue to travel today and have long been accustomed to different cultures. These travels gave me the opportunity to volunteer for many different projects ranging from promoting French culture in Indonesia to delivering drugs to medical dispensaries in Nigeria to welcoming newcomers in the Emirates. I also volunteered as a French teacher with bilingual and non-bilingual children, both in France and abroad. For expatriate children, learning French is a way for them to maintain their roots. As for the children in general, whether or not they have lived in France, I firmly believe the

discovery of a foreign language opens their minds and gives them new tools to use. This is not my first time to live in Houston and I have developed a large network. Supportive of the EFGH mission, I gladly accepted to join the organization’s board of directors.

“ I have been living in Houston for the past three years and this year I volunteer at EFGH in helping teachers and assistants in pedagogy. As I was working as a teacher with the association last year, I realized I could share my professional experience organizing training sessions and offer individual aid in building a personal project for the teachers who would like it. !I have been certified French teacher for the past 15 years. After teaching in France, I joined the French Mission Laïque and worked in company-sponsored schools for 7 years (The Renault School in Cordoba, Argentina and Curitiba, Brazil; and the Total School in Stavanger, Norway). Later on my two daughters and I came to live in the United States with my husband on his new assignment and I taught CE2 (3rd Grade) for two years at Awty. When I was working with company sponsored schools I mainly taught in small classes with two or more scholastic levels very much like those at EFGH. In each class I had to adjust my teaching techniques to the public, methods and goals of the school. What I loved the most was working around a specific project whether a school project and/or a class one. This approach lets the students be at the center of their learning process and enables them to be more involved in the classroom. It also gives the children the opportunity to actually understand the link between what they learn and what they want to express. This is the philosophy promoted by EFGH and I am happy to be part of it. ”

Sonia Lelarge, EFGH Pedagogical

Coordinator

Upon my arrival to Houston almost two years ago, I asked myself, like many other expatriate wives do: “And now what do I do?” I graduated with a DESS (master of Advanced Studies) in Psychology of the Child and the Teenager and I have twenty years of experience helping people (children, teenagers and adults) on a cognitive, social, and professional level. Once in Houston, I wondered how I could put my experience to good use and give meaning to my expatriation. EFGH was the answer. For a year I worked as an assistant for EFGH in a FLAM (French First language) class. During this time I had the opportunity to see, first hand, the complexities of teaching at EFGH. I also realized that this challenge required people to constantly adjust, reflect, share and question their best practices. At the beginning of last year, EFGH had an opening for Head of Recruitment. This was an opportunity to discover, from an administrative point of view, how EFGH functioned. It was also an opportunity to keep doing what I love to do and to enrich my professional experience in Human Resources. As a result, I met with teachers and assistants, became a member of the team, and continued to have a professional sense of fulfillment… even though I was expatriated!

I arrived in Houston four short months ago after three years of expatriation in Rome. Prior to that, I had lived ten years in Paris, where I studied literature and dabbled in Art History for fun. After graduating with a DESS (Master of Advanced Studies) in engineering publications and communications, I started working as a communications advisor at the AFPA (National Association for Adult Professional Training) and later on as head editorialist for agencies specialized in corporate communication. When my husband and I started living abroad in 2011, I registered as an independent editor so I could maintain my work and professional network. During that time, I had regular assignments for news agencies and publishing houses. However, when I arrived to the United States, I wanted to find an activity that would allow me to be involved locally, be a part of a team and create contacts with people coming from various backgrounds. I was stunned by the unbelievably warm welcome I received from the French community in Houston, and when I had the opportunity to be a part of EFGH, I could not resist and became the newsletter coordinator. It is personally a great opportunity to discover volunteering for the first time in my professional career, and to work with such passionate people who truly believe in their teaching mission.

Anne Guerquin, EFGH Newsletter

Coordinator

Native from Nice, I studied in Bourges as a Quality, Health & Safety (QHS) Engineer. Then, I moved in Paris for the work. But after 4 years in the Capital, my husband and I wanted to go abroad and experiment an expatriation life. So we moved in Houston in January 2014. After several months taking time to get used to this new city and new life, I realized that being a volunteer in America is a really important position. Volunteering allows getting lots of people together with a same goal: help their community. So, I wanted to throw myself into one of the many associations of Houston. During my attendances at the Foody’s committee, I heard about EFGH. This association caught my attention because I worked for a students’ association, « Objectif Mention », during my studies. Our aim was to provide private lessons for families who couldn’t afford it with other existing organisms. That is why I didn’t hesitate when I heard about the vacancy for the Volunteers’ Coordinator position. The fact that this position is brand-new for the association is a real challenge. I am very exited to take part to this association and I am glad to share my experiences with EFGH. I hope that we will do a great job all together.

Enjoy your summer break in French with EFGH!

In June 2014, EFGH hosted two new summer camps for children aged 5 to 12. Lasting a total of three weeks, the camps provided the children with complete French immersion. Each week, 95 children participated in activities ranging from a variety of themes and each Friday, the students went on a field trip to a museum. Under the direction of Claire Frazier at the Kolter Elementary School and Marie Crespel at the Barbara Bush Elementary School, the children basked in the French culture through different games and activities, which were all supervised by French staff. During the first week, the children embarked on a journey of tasting, cooking, and

gardening based off the « Panoramix Magical Recipes, » which all led to the Doctor’s Kitchen Garden at the Health Museum. As kings, queens, knights, and princesses, the children then solved the “Versailles Castle Mystery” which resulted in a visit to the « Precious Stones Collection » at the Natural Museum of Science. !During the third week, the children embarked on a journey to the moon! Not only did they discover the planets, observe flying objects, and build a rocket, they also went to the NASA Space Center at the end of the week. During these three weeks, French was the only language spoken, and the children were able to enjoy the activities in a stress-free, creative and playful atmosphere. !Thank you to all those who made these summer camps a wonderful experience and we look forward to doing again next summer.

Pedagogical Training For Our Teachers

Our teaching mission at EFGH is quite complicated. To begin with, teachers need to motivate their students, ensure their progress, and spark within them a desire to come back after a long day at school. In addition, our classes are often composed of students of varying ages, levels of maturity and areas of interest, and this poses quite a challenge for our teachers. In an attempt to address these issues, EFGH started monthly meetings last year with the intention of aiding teachers and assistants adapt their pedagogy to their students. These stimulating and enriching meetings also provided us with the opportunity to share personal experiences from the classroom and brainstorm ideas to improve the system. For the 2014-2015 school year, EFGH will offer two types of training: one in pedagogy and the other in individual class projects:

! The pedagogical training seminars will not only allow us to share classroom experiences like last year, but will also provide us with the opportunity to receive training on specific subjects. Since the beginning of the year, two sessions have already taken place. The first session addressed taking charge of the classroom from day one, as well as preparing activities to create intimate relationships with the students. The second session focused on the various activities that can be created from a single song or poem. Other sessions are soon to come each month.

! The guided group sessions on individual class projects consists of working with

a specialized teacher on a particular project. The two will brainstorm ideas such as creating an album or putting together a play focused on the theme of this year, travel. In this case, it will become vital to ensure the project meets the scholastic level of the students in the class and defines specific goals for each activity, including improving students’ grammar, spelling, reading, and writing skills.

In light of the increasing number of students and locations, EFGH is recruiting more teachers and assistants. As a result, our team is constantly growing and adapting its pedagogical methods. As we prepared to release this newsletter, we were happy to welcome Mrs Isabelle Bonis, expert in the training of teachers. As a volunteer, Mrs Bonis, will work closely with the pedagogical coordinator.

Pedagogical meeting before Back-to-school in September the 6th 2014.

Psychology: The unique yet diverse approach siblings have to languages they speak at home

It is interesting to note how children within a family uniquely approach the same languages. Each child’s personal story and overall personality is seen through their internalization of the French language. These variances raise the question of how children approach and adopt the French language, as even those who are under the same roof, do so very differently. Why does this particular child, within his or her family, feel so French? In contrast, why has his sibling chosen another language to French as his favorite one? Several influencing factors have to be taken into account:

• place of residence: Which countries has the child lived in throughout his or her life and at what age did he or she live in those countries?

• family profile: What are the different nationalities present in the family? What are the various languages spoken by the parents, and with who are they spoken with?

• child’s personality: A child will normally reject or accept a language based on the emotions it has associated to it. These emotions can range from complete indifference to casual interest to profound, and sometimes excessive, emotional investment in the language.

As we live in the United States, English is present in the majority of our children’s every day lives. Therefore it is important to understand the specific connection each child has developed with the French language. What is the child attempting to say when he or she rejects or accepts a language and how revealing is it of this child’s connection to that language? The attitude a child chooses to have towards a language is an indicator of his or her emotions. Within a family, each parent connects to their children in a unique way. While the time parents invest in their children’s life is quantifiable, the love between a parent and a child is qualitative in its own way. A bond between a child and his or her parent is an exclusive one as the connections made consciously (and sometimes subconsciously!) are unique to that child and parent. It is the specific composition of these bonds that make the connection between any two human beings unique. Within the different groups of a family, alliances are created, which further reinforce one’s identification. Different factors such as the ranking within siblings, the different genders present, and the parents’ potentially distinctive nationalities, all play a role in the construction of each child’s personality. In giving our children the opportunity to learn French at EFGH, and in practicing with them at home, we are contributing to the emotional bond they will develop with this language. However, one aspect is specifically up to the child: he or she must decide how much value to place on the French language in his or her own overall identity. By allowing our children the freedom to identify with the French language in any way they choose, we give them, as parents, the opportunity to make a personal decision in their own lives. And each child will identify with the language in a unique way!

French psychologist, Adélaïde Russell is a parent to bicultural children currently enrolled at EFGH. She co-authored the book L’enfant expatrié (The Expatriate Child), which was published in February 2009.

Et Voilà Théâtre in French with English subtitles

November 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15, 2014 at 8.00 pm Freneticore Dance Theater, 5102 Navigation Blvd - Houston, TX 77011

The French-speaking theater group Et Voilà Théâtre is pleased to announce Bal-Trap, its 20th play,

starting November 1st, 2014 at Freneticore Dance Theater. Reservations are recommended as this venue has a limited number of seats.

Bal-Trap, a play by Xavier Durringer, is a bittersweet drama. The action takes place after a popular gig on the village square, where two young people begin their love story while two others try to restore their passionate

love, the one they had before daily chores doused their flame. But bumps and bruises are present, hidden deep inside, ignored, but still guiding the characters toward a fate that prevents them from living their one

true Love. Each of them is looking for a soul mate, but they cannot understand each other. They follow their “Sweet Dream” to escape their loneliness and their pasts, believing, with an insatiable faith, in a better future where true Love can move mountains and make them – and the rest of us – travel to the ends of the earth.

Note: this play is not intended for an audience younger than 16 due to strong language and adult themes.

With: Anne Anquetin, Valérie Gaskin, Ramdane Hamadi, Thierry Rignol and Olivier Winter Directed by: Josselin Legeay

Tickets: adults $15; students, seniors (+65) and kids (-18) $10 Reservations : http://www.etvoilatheatre.org or [email protected]
