President Sue’s Chatter: To start the year off I would like to

welcome our 4 new members Maria Poynton, Jill Paterson, Gail Plamus and Beverley Wilson. All of you have attended a coffee morning and we hope that you will attend our other events so we can get to know you all better. We may be able to persuade you to write a little about yourselves for the next newsletter! Enjoy your travels with us! We have our annual combined picnic coming up with Wellington on Sunday Feb 23rd at Big Mac Slabs Creative Centre Mazengarb Road. This is on Wet or Fine. They have kindly offered their premises free of charge

and may provide some local crafts people to demonstrate to us. This venue gives both our members and Wellington a chance to see the products some of our local crafts people product. Some great gifts for taking away on your next journey too. Kevin and I have been away trying out a Campervan over the days leading up to Waitangi day. We toured around the East Cape which we thoroughly enjoyed, ending up in Napier for the Elton John Concert at the Mission Estate. This was after having the 3 Auckland grandchildren staying for 10 days. We also were involved in the Waikanae Lions Garden Trail which was wonderful twelve beautiful gardens on display for $20 a ticket! Fran and I will be attending the NZ Friendship Force Conference in Blenheim on February 19-21. We are putting in an entry for the Outreach Award and also the “Be Visible” Competition. Is there anyone who would like to join our Board? We meet once a month and mostly keep an eye on events coming up. New board members find it an excellent way to learn more about the Friendship Force Organisation. Contact President Sue on 0274 385143 or [email protected]. Or chat to me at the next event. Raleigh arrive to visit with us on March 17th leaving March 24th. Beverley and Allan Taylor are the Ambassador Co-ordinators (AC) and have an interesting programme organised for them. I hope you are all enjoying the summer weather and planning your winter trips away!

I was born in Greytown in 1947 and for the first three years lived on my parent’s orchard before they moved to Lower Hutt. After I left school, I joined New Zealand Railways where I obtained electrical and engineering qualifications. I am director of Lighting Strategies NZ Ltd where I use Advanced Graphical Interface (AGi32) software to calculate the lighting requirements to meet New Zealand and Australian Standards for commercial and industrial buildings. The lighting of sporting venues such as tennis courts, rugby

and hockey fields to meet AS/NZ Standards for club and international play, including television coverage for Sky TV, has been a big part of the design portfolio. My late wife and I have two daughters and one grandson. I relocated from Lower Hutt to Paraparaumu five years ago to live in a nicer climate. My interests include dancing, concerts and stage shows, music, skiing and international travel, however my main hobby is flying my own light aircraft to interesting places around New Zealand. I joined the Friendship Force in March 2018 because of my love of travelling and meeting people.

My favourite places visited are Interlaken in Switzerland and Lyndhurst in the New Forrest of England. My favourite aircraft is the Airbus A380 with favourite ground travel being Eurostar and TGV high speed trains. I am organising two trips for 2020 (Japan in late March and Australia in June) and plan to visit Canada in 2021. ____________________________________________________________________________

Friendship Force New Zealand conference being held in

Blenheim 19thto 21st February 2020 The 2020 New Zealand Conference will be hosted by the Marlborough Club. President Sue Harris and Board Member Fran Kennedy will be representing our Club at this Conference. The motto is “BE VISIBLE”. We have a very full itinerary – one aspect though will be that an hour has been allocated for clubs to share their Be Visible and membership recruitment experiences. Our Club has been quite active in their endeavours to “Be Visible”, so we have been given 5-8 minutes to share our commitment to put The Friendship Force up front and visible. It is not long but we will do our best. It will be in the form of a power point presentation.

We are also entering our Club in The New Zealand Outreach Award. This Award recognizes the efforts and initiatives made by Clubs to present themselves to the general public.

THE FRIENDSHIP FORCE PLEDGE

As a member of the Friendship Force I recognise that I can make a difference. I recognise that I have a mission.

That mission is to be a friend to the people of the world. As I embark on this adventure I know that others will be watching me.

I know that through my example to my fellow citizens and people of other countries,

the cause of peace and friendship can be furthered.

I can make a difference.
