FROM THE DEPUTY SWPBS News This week we held our first Green Day for the year. For our new families, we generally hold a couple of Green Days a term to highlight positive behaviour across the school. This week’s Green Day focus was for parents to learn more about our whole school behaviour zones and new processes. It was great to see so many parents answering the quiz questions and visiting the stalls. Hopefully it was an informative afternoon and parents who participated left with a new level of understanding of how our school is trying to reduce lost learning time for our students. Over the past two weeks, our major office referrals have been too high! In particular many of our prep to year 2 students have been unsettled and out of the learning zone. Parents can assist us promoting a calm, productive environment by reinforcing with our younger students that they need to follow instructions the first time and stay with their class at all times. FAQ Why is my child talking about their ‘engine’? Asking students to think about their bodies (and associated energy levels, emotions and senses) as a car engine helps them to identify what they need to do to be learning effectively. If their ‘engine’ is running too high or low then students are asked to take some time-out, select a sensory tool or activity to fix their feelings and/or regulating their bodies. The ultimate goal is that all our students’ engines are ‘just right’ and ready to learn in the classroom. Student Wellbeing Many concerns have been raised by our teachers about student nutrition over the past couple of weeks and the beginning of the year is a good time to highlight many key messages for parents to consider. Firstly, the importance of a healthy breakfast has been well documented. Sending your child with a full belly or encouraging them to visit the PCYC breakfast club in the morning is essential for concentration in class. Secondly, growing bodies need enough food packed for the breaks throughout the day. Our office ladies are inundated by students who have

arrived to school without lunch or who have eaten it all before school. Finally, sugary, salty and fatty snacks do impact negatively on student behaviour and concentration in the short term and have potentially devastating long term health impacts. We do not support the practice of some parents to bring up take-away to the school. Our families should be supporting the school tuckshop if they need to buy student lunches. Our tuckshop not only offers a delicious menu but also meets the strict health criteria for our children. Berrinba East Car Boot Sale Thank you to all our school families who supported our first ever car boot sale over the weekend, it was great to see you all there. Congratulations to the P&C and in particular our Treasurer, Sarah Hyndman for a well organised and enjoyable event. Don’t forget there are many ways that parents can become involved in the life of the school and volunteer. Our P&C always welcome new members and meets monthly. You may also consider volunteering in the school’s tuckshop. Please contact Michelle our acting convenor if you are interested in assisting in the tuckshop, and Carolyn Mott if you would like to help the P&C in other ways.. Good Luck and Farewell It is with a heavy heart that I announce that one of longest serving staff members, Melinda Cornwall is leaving us for the year to perform a regional teacher coaching role. Melinda has had many roles during her time at Berrinba East, starting as a plucky student teacher moving into a much loved classroom teacher then to her leadership roles of learning support teacher and Teaching and Learning Coach. In her 12 years, she has worked tirelessly to expand our students’ opportunities, improve our school’s performance and support our teachers. Her sense of fun, caring and super human work ethic will be sorely missed however we all wish her all the best in her new role.

IT’S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

I have been given a wonderful opportunity to share my coaching skills at a regional level by becoming a Lead Coach for the South East Region. This means I will, unfortunately, be leaving BESS on Friday 28th February until the end of the year. It is with mixed emotion that I leave the school. On one hand I am really excited about my new role and the professional development I will both deliver and receive, and on the other hand, I will be very sad to leave behind the school community, the students, my colleagues, and of course Archie. Archie’s new foster mum will be Jan Forrester. He will continue to work Monday to Wednesday with our students. I started my Berrinba journey 12 years ago. I completed my last prac teaching Year 4 then was offered a contract for the next year. Although I did a 7 month stint teaching in the UK a few years later, and had a short maternity break, I have remained at Berrinba for the past 12 years. I have had many roles within the school, but my most rewarding is my current role. I am privileged to work with the most amazing professionals who care deeply about their students. Together we are co-learners. I enjoy working in every single classroom, and having the opportunity to lead programs which are proven by research to be the most valuable for student learning. I love that I get to work with every single student in the school and develop positive relationships with them all. So for now, it is goodbye. Thank you to all the teachers, teacher aides, admin staff, cleaners, students, parents, leadership team and school community for the most amazing 12 years of my life. See you all in 2015 ☺

SCHOOL VALUES

As the school has just introduced 6 school values that we want to promote to your children we thought it would be good to get you, as parents, on board. Each week we will look at practical ways to help you teach these, and other individual family values, to your children at home. Most parents want to instil good moral values in their children. Doing so will protect them from negative outside influences and lay a good foundation for their lives. Of course, this is often easier said than done, especially in our busy lives today. As a result, outside influences like Internet, TV, movies, games and music, are having a greater affect on our children more than ever before. We learn our values from many different sources. Children acquire their values through interactions with significant others. Adult friends, school teachers and other staff members, volunteers, coaches and most importantly parents and caregivers. MODEL GOOD VALUES - One of the most important things you can do is to set a good example for your children. If you want your children to exhibit values like creativity, curiosity, resilience, determination, respect and trust, then you need to show these qualities yourself. Your kids won't think determination is important if you routinely give up on things when the going gets tough or learn about respect if they hear you disrespecting someone unfairly. If there is a difference between what you say and what you do your kids are just going to ignore what you tell them. Even though we all fall short now and then we should always be a role model who practices what we preach.
