Q: How long have you lived in Lakeway/Lake Travis area?

We’ve lived in Lakeway/Lake Travis area since 2001.

Q: What brought you to the area/where did you live before?

We were l iving in South Austin for many years until an opportunity took us to College Station. We moved back to the Lake Travis area in 2001 where we raised our two boys.

Q: What do you like most about Lakeway?

We love the “small town feel” of Lakeway, while though Austin is so close. We enjoy the outdoors of the Lake Travis area and surrounding hill country.

Q: How/where did you meet?We met at a club on Sixth

Street. Rita’s friend introduced her to me. About a week later, I kissed for the first time on New Year’s night 1987. We have been together ever since.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?

I love to play golf when I get the opportunity. Rita loves being outdoors, so just about anything that includes being outside she loves. We also enjoy doing Bikram Yoga together and working out.

Q: Where do you work/what do you do for a living?I am the Police Chief for the City of Lakeway and Rita is the

Medical Staff Coordinator for Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Lakeway.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a family?We just enjoy being with our two sons Taylor and Kelby. It

really doesn’t matter what we’re doing, we always have a lot of fun together doing it! We are blessed to have two great boys who enjoy their parents and like to “hang” with us.

Q: What is one of your favorite family memories?One of our favorite memories is the last trip we took as a family

before our oldest son Taylor, joined the Marine Corps. We went to Kauai, Hawaii for 10 days and had the best time! We went swimming in the ocean, hiking, kayaking and took the most

amazing helicopter tour of the island. We really connected as a family.

Q: Do you have any pets/what kind?Yes, we are a dog loving family for sure! We fostered dogs for a

little while but had to stop because we kept adopting every dog we fostered.

Q: What does family mean to you?Family is about always being there for each other, no matter the

circumstance and without judgment. Family is about loving each other unconditionally. Family are those people you can be yourself around, and to feel safe and secure with. Family for us is what life is all about!

Q: How would your friends/neighbors describe you?I think friends would describe us as a happy couple who keep

each other balanced. I’m the extrovert who is always on the go while Rita is quieter

and loves hanging out with our friends and our family. Rita really keeps me grounded. I think that people would also recognize our love of family and country.

Q: What is something you would like to share with your neighbors and community members?

Be kind and courteous to each other. We never know what someone might be going through. A small act of kindness like saying “Hello” or smiling at someone, could make a difference in someone’s day.

Q: What are some of your family traditions?

We always eat dinner as a family at the dinner table without television or electronics. We decorate the Christmas tree with our sons and enjoy baking Christmas goodies. On Christmas eve we go to dinner then to church.

Q: What is something you would like to do or are looking

forward to doing in the next year?Taylor, our older son, will be getting out of the U.S. Marine

Corps in a little over a year and we are looking forward to having him back home. We looking forward to taking another trip with him and our youngest son Kelby.

Q: What is your favorite piece of advice or quote?Do not be afraid to Fail! Don’t worry about failure, worry about

the chance you miss when you don’t try!Q: If you could travel anywhere with your family, where would

it be and why?We would love to go to Greece, Rome and Italy. The boys have

wanted to go there since they were little and we would enjoy the history of the area. It is on our bucket list to go there one day. Taylor, Kelby and I would love to go cage diving with great white sharks, but Rita isn’t thinking that is on “anyone’s list”!

Q: Who has inspired you in life and why?I think for both of us, inspiration came from our parents. They

had strong faith, work ethic and taught us to honor family, and our elders. They also taught us to do our best, no one is perfect, you will have successes and failures, but the reward is always on the other side of trying!

Seek relief from the heat of mid-summer by going to Lakeway’s Big Band Bash from 8-10 p.m. July 10 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.

Enjoy a large dance floor in an air conditioned ballroom and tables available for your treats at a place where you may invite your friends without the hassle of reservations.

The Lakeway Big Band Bash is on the second Monday of each month. Admission is free, but donations to the band are encouraged.

Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, features Lakeway singers David Cummings and Lisa Clark. This band consistently appeals to everyone with a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements.

“We welcome everyone to come to Lakeway and have dinner at one of our many restaurants and then come to the Bash at 8 p.m.,” Lakeway Arts Committee chairman Fred Newton suggested.

Around LakewayGreetings from Lakeway MUD. We hope all of you are enjoying

the spring weather and the beautiful vegetation we enjoy in Lakeway. At Lakeway MUD, we are gearing up for the increased water usage that always accompanies our hot summers. Lakeway MUD furnishes Water and Wastewater to the older sections of Lakeway. We have approximately 4,200 customers that rely on us to ensure their water supply is delivered uninterrupted. We supply Wastewater services to approximately 3200 of these customers. Back when the MUD was first formed in the early 1970’s, there was a group of homes (Old Lakeway) that opted not to connect to our sewer lines. Most of these homes had recently put in septic tanks and did not want the added expense of sewer service so they chose to only use Lakeway MUD for water. We will talk more about what we might be able to do to help some of these customers later in the column.

Lakeway MUD is one of 5 separate MUDs that serve the City of Lakeway. We are a separate entity from the City of Lakeway. We are our own self-contained Municipality, governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 5 Directors elected by our taxpayers, who are water and Wastewater customers. These Directors serve 4 year terms, with either 2 or 3 positions up for election every other year. We are also supported by our volunteer committees; 20 citizens who devote time to our Finance, Engineering, Land, and Administrative/Personnel

Committees. We stress that we are separate from the City of Lakeway partially to educate the citizens where to direct their payments for services. Water and Wastewater payments go to Lakeway MUD. Our District Administrative office is at 1097 Lohmans Crossing, just one block past City Hall on your right, behind the Heritage Center. Many times citizens will drop off their trash payments at our office. These trash payments are collected by the City of Lakeway, and should be directed to 1102 Lohmans Crossing (City Hall).

We would like to remind everyone that we are on Stage 1 watering restrictions. Stage 1 has the same watering schedule from May 1-Sept 30 as Stage 2. Those restrictions call for residential addresses ending in Odd numbers to water Wednesday and Saturday. Those residences with addresses ending in even numbers may water on Thursday and Sunday. Commercial customers may water on Tuesday and Friday. As always during the summer months, NO WATERING IS ALLOWED BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 10AM and 7PM. Please check your sprinkler system to ensure you are in sync with the requirements.

Our new billing system is fully up and operational now. With a few minor hiccups, the conversion process went extremely well. We would like to thank our Administrative team for a job well done. It was very trying for the staff during the period of time when two systems were running at the same time, but our staff came through and did a terrific job. This is an ideal time to sign up for our paperless billing option. With that option, our customers get an email with their bill attached in PDF format. You don’t even have to sign in to your account to see your bill! Even more convenient is our Auto Pay system where we charge your credit card or your checking or savings account automatically. It saves paper, time, and worry about whether you have paid your bill or not. If you are not interested in Auto Pay, the new system allows you to go to our website and pay your bill by credit card or check without having to sign into your account. Simply enter your phone number or email address (you don’t even have to remember your account number!) and the system will prompt you through making your payment. Over 53% of our customers now use the Auto Pay feature, and over 35% enjoy receiving their bill via email versus US Mail. We expect both participation numbers to grow substantially over the next few months. We would like to thank our customers for their patience as we progressed through the implementation of the new system.

I have mentioned in previous articles about the calls I get from out of District customers who have septic tanks and would like to connect to the Lakeway MUD wastewater collection system. I am gathering information from LCRA on septic tanks and what the requirements are for today’s standards. I would like to say there has been a lot of bad information out there. One concern seems to be if you have to hook up to the system. The answer is no and you will never be forced to hook up our system. The decision is yours and/or the new owner’s decision. Each year, LTlov grants funds to other non-profits who share their vision and mission of neighbors helping neighbors to overcome limiting circumstances. The money used to grant funds is collected through a diverse list of individuals, corporations and foundations who believe in the mission of LTlov and trust their organizational efficiency to be good stewards of their donations. This year, LTlov funded grants to 11 organizations totaling $25,454 dollars. In addition, LTlov also reserved funding in the amount of $28,000 dollars for their College Scholarships program, Kids Free Dental Day program and School Supplies’ Project Supply Pack program.

The Ladies of Charity - Lake Travis Thrift Shop (“Thrift Shop”) provides a unique shopping experience in Lakeway. We have many customers that donate and shop with us, but there are many things that they and other area residents don’t know. Here are ten things, come

by to find out more.1) Ladies of Charity – Lake Travis (LOC-LT), by means of the

Thrift Shop, is the largest provider of aide in the Lake Travis ISD, having provided over $3,000,000 in financial support and over $3,000,000 in In-Kind donations.

2) This aide is in support of over twenty five (25) local and Central Texas 501(c)(3) charities including 3 local crisis centers: Lake Travis Crisis Ministries, Helping Hand of Spicewood, and St. Vincent De Paul Society of Spicewood. These three are guaranteed monthly support.

3) We provide funding for several shelters for the homeless

including Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Mary Catholic Worker and Saint Louise House.

4) We support the families of our wounded warriors through Air Warriors Courage Foundation/ Project Christmas Hope, another Lakeway organization by providing clothing for the children of warriors at San Antonio Medical Center and by sponsoring Honor Flights to Washington D.C. for our veterans.

5) The Thrift Shop has been supporting the area for 26 years! LOC-LT was founded in 1991 to provide financial support to Lake Travis Crisis Ministries. This is our third location due to continued growth and success.

6) The Thrift Shop is staffed by a very ecumenical group of volunteers from Lakeway and surrounding areas.

7) Our volunteers provide over 36,000 hours of service each year. We continue to welcome new volunteers that have 3 hours a week to volunteer in our shop.

8) We have partnered with local chapters of National Charity League and Young Men’s Service League, who share a love

The City of Lakeway is notifying residents of an increase in the monthly rate of their trash and recycling bills to $21 per month, which will result in a quarterly bill of $63. The rate increase will take effect for the July 2017 bills.

After requesting bids in January and reviewing three solid waste companies’ bids, the city signed a new service contract with its current provider, Progressive Waste Solutions, that included the increase.

“The City of Lakeway chose Progressive Waste Solutions because it submitted the lowest price quote,” Lakeway Assistant City Manager Julie Oakley said. The city’s last rate increase was in 2013.

Around LakewayLinda Wells, well known Lakeway artist, is planning an art

camp for 200 Maasai children in the village of Lenjani, Tanzania, a remote Maasai area in East Africa. Linda, with help from her friend and fellow artist Lily Davis will engage the children in art activities as she paints murals in the rooms and down the halls of a new Primary School opening in January of 2018. Lily and Linda are both skilled at doing portraits and will be painting a portrait of the two chiefs from the region. The school is a “first” for the Maasai with 22 villages in the area.

In April of 2017 Linda traveled to the village where she met with the Chief of the village of Lenjani and some of the most important Maasai leaders in the area. Using her phone to display the art work being planned for the school, she captured the interest and the imagination of the Maasai warriors. While there are 22 Maasai villages in the region, none have a school and this is perhaps one of the most important events that has ever taken place. The school is the result of the Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary Club having drilled a large clean water well as without water a school would not have been possible.

To honor the Maasai warriors, Linda and Lily will paint a portrait of the two warrior chiefs to be hung in a prominent location in the school. In addition the children will participate in filling in the outlines of the various paintings that Linda and Lily will create so that the children will have a sense of ownership of the school.

Recognizing that these children have never seen a word of English, and do not read or write in their native language of Swahili, Linda will print the names of the animals in English and Swahili under each animal. Ms. Wells will be beginning the long process of building literacy among this population of children, none of whom have ever attended school.

Ms. Wells and Dr. Donna Gunn, Executive Director of Africa’s Promise Village, a local non-profit, will be responsible for selecting the color scheme for the classrooms, dining hall and other facilities. The school is being built by Common Threadz, another non-profit which has Dr. Amin Mery and Dr. Chris Jones, both doctors in the area, as members of their board.

Odds are good that you know who Tony Robbins is. If you don’t, he is famous for selling his self-help programs to millions through TV infomercials, and he successfully trains thousands of people who attend his events to walk on fire at the end of the first day.

So what in the world does a “self-help guru” know about investing?

The answer a few years ago was – not a lot. But when Tony wants to learn something, he doesn’t do it in a small way.

Tony decided that he wanted to learn the secrets of investing like the Billionaires do. So he went out and interviewed them. What he learned went into a new book he is releasing called “Money – Master the Game”.

For those of you who want the short version, here are four key points:

1. Don’t lose money. Billionaire investors focus on not losing money over everything else.

2. Risk a little to make a lot. Look for the home run, but only do it with a small amount of your portfolio.

3. Anticipate and diversify. Educate yourself so you can be knowledgeable, and when the moment is there, strike! But

make sure you diversify as billionaire investors always assume that they will be wrong.

4. You are never done. Billionaires continue to learn and never stop. You should do the same.

If you ask me, I would say those are four great investment points to live by. I would also tell you that reading Tony’s book is a good idea.
