REFLECTION FOR SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER Louis Braille (who refined the system of raised dots into an alphabet for the blind) was a generous man. On the back of his desk was a small box stuffed to the brim with slips of paper. They were I - O - U’s. Friends had made written promises to pay back money they had borrowed from him. After Louis’ death the following instruction was found in his will: “Destroy the box when I die.” That’s mercy. That’s what the Oxford Dictionary defines as compassion shown to offenders in one’s power. When Jesus died on the cross he cancelled our debts. He took every I - O - U ever written in sin and destroyed them. Now we owe nothing - - except the debt of love. (GM)
