Well another month over – 4
months of the Lions Year left.
In the last month we did our
usual sausage sizzles at
Harvey Norman and donuts at
BrackenRidge. Donuts at
Bracken Ridge were very
busy.
We had our Club YOTY
Judging on February 15 –
again this evening did not
disappoint. Thank you to all
lions that helped on the
evening. Our winning
candidate goes forward to the
Zone Final which is being held
next Sunday March 5th
. This
afternoon is being hosted by
Brisbane Bardon at the Lion
Club at GVK Lions Den. The
afternoon segment will start at
2pm. Come along and support
these young people.
Tonight is nominations night –
if you have been asked to fill a
position for next year please
consider it. We also have a
group of lions from Samford
Lions Club visiting this
evening. Please make them
welcome.
March 11th the GVK
Lionesses are hosting a Ladies
in Lionism luncheon at Ferny
Grove Sports Club.
That night from 5.30pm there
is being held in George
Wilmore Park 'Movie in the
Park' where we will be doing a
sausage sizzle.
March 15th the Romans are
Coming to our Lion’s Den.
Beware.
The Multi District Convention
is creeping up on us. This year
it is being held in Hobart
between 5th and 8th May.
What a great opportunity to
visit a beautiful part of
Australia. Darryl & I are
attending as are Rodd and
Wendy. It would be great to
see other club members
attend. Please Consider.
Yours in Lionism
Wendy

DEN REPORT
Here it is March already &
still no rain. The newly
planted grass around the
tables is looking quite good
(thanks to some regular
watering). The memorial
garden is looking good since
The Lionesses’ had their
ceremony there with the tree
planting last Wednesday. It
looks O K. Otherwise every
thing still looks a little dry
(just like everyone else`s
yard). It`s got to rain soon.
The shed is nearing
completion with the gutters &
down pipes & drainage to be
completed & the concrete
ramp to be completed,
hopefully the former will be
done by the week-end (time
permitting).
Hopefully when the trees stop
shedding their leaves, we will
be able to get up on the Den
roof & clean the Den gutters
which must be quite full by
now.
With the activities with the
rosters being quite busy for
the next few weeks & the lack
of rain, it is going to be a little
difficult to keep up the
maintenance, but we will try.
P S. When locking The
Den after meetings kindly
ensure Air conditioners &
lights are turned OFF &
windows opened slightly
before locking front door.
Thanking You
The Den Committee.

I would like club to start a
mobile phone recycling
project with funds raised to
support LMRF. There is a
company that accepts mobiles
and gives a percentage of
receipts to deserving activities
like LMRF, additionally the
club gets acknowledge as the
donor of the funds.
It would appear to be a win-
win type situation. However
we need a person to be the
action person - getting
members to bring in the items
and sending the items off in
reply paid bags etc.
Therefore:
Position Vacant
Lion needed to chair new
mobile phone recycling
project.
Minimal effort however must
be able to talk to and
encourage other Lions and
community people to donate
their old mobiles.
Needs good hand skill to write
address on envelope to post
items once collected and keep
records of donations and value
of donations.
Suit person with free time as
no set hours or schedule.

Rodd Chignell

Good Morning Ladies It is Lions Awareness Day this coming Saturday. I am organising a gathering of Lions at Brookside to promote membership of women in Lions (+ Lions Centennial + International Women's Day). I am hoping to have at least 100 women Lions to gather on the day for a cuppa and a chat in their Lions shirts - strength in numbers for
a visible impact. Spread the word - come join me.. If you can spare the time, please pop by the shopping centre, for a cuppa or just to say hello - let me know if you can come along, and if you can nominate a time that suits you so that I can coordinate numbers throughout the day would be appreciated but not essential.
I have booked the charity site space, just outside the Coffee Club – so meet us there.
PS I do not have email addresses for all the female members of GVK, so if you can on forward this email to other members, would be appreciated also. The men are also invited to join us to show their support for women membership in Lions. Look forward to seeing some of you on Saturday.
Regards
Donna
Garage Sale Donations
Required
My son Geoff is participating
in a charity bike ride for the
Mater Hospital Cancer
Research, riding from
Townsville to Brisbane in
August. To raise funds he is
having a garage sale in May. If
you have any unwanted items
you can donate he would be
grateful. I can pick them up
from your place.

WHEN INSULTS HAD CLASS From George Bernard-Shaw to Winston Churchill I am enclosing two tickets to first night of my new play; bring a friend…. If you have one. Winston Churchill in response Cannot possibly attend first night will attend second….if there is one
Paul Keating “He is simply a shiver looking for spine to run up” Mark Twain “I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a letter saying I approved of it” Oscar Wilde “He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked his friends”
Youth of the Year
Once again we had a very
successful night, thanks to Jan
Spathonis who made the night
run like clockwork even
though she was suffering with
a sore throat.
This year we had 4 contestants
who amazed us all with their
intelligence and maturity.
Carrie Shea told us what it
was like to be a NERD, not all
bad as some may think.
Kyle Warman spoke about
how after living and
volunteering in Vietnam and
Cambodia we really are very
lucky.
Olivia Bell amazed us during
her speech about “how to have
a proper argument” Our
politicians need to take note.
Sanjay Razik gave us an
insight of what it was like
being a second generation
migrant, thought he had the
best of both worlds.
The impromptu questions
were
1. Do you think the world
is doing enough to stop
global warming?
2. What is your view on
the Queensland Cancer
council’s request to
government to pass a
law that for anyone
born after 2001,
smoking would be
made illegal?
Carrie Shea won both
the Public Speaker Award
and was the Overall
winner.
We wish her well in the
upcoming zone event.
Thanks to judges, Rachel
Blaney, Graham Theaker
and Brian Battersby.
Also to Megan Thomas
from the NAB for her
support.
Denis took lots of pictures
on the night, which can be
seen on the GVK website.
Lions Code of Ethics
To show my faith in the
worthiness of my vocation by
industrious application to the
end that I may merit a
reputation for quality of
service.
To seek success and to
demand all fair remuneration
or profit as my just due, but to
accept no profit or success at
the price of my own self-
respect lost because of unfair
advantage taken or because of
questionable acts on my part.
To remember that in building
up my business it is not
necessary to tear down
another’s; to be loyal to my
clients or customers and true
to myself.
Whenever a doubt arises as to
the right or ethics of my
position or action towards
others, to resolve such doubt
against myself.
To hold friendship as an end
and not a means. To hold that
true friendship exists not on
account of the service
performed by one to another,
but that true friendship
demands nothing but accepts
service in the spirit in which it
is given.
Always to bear in mind my
obligations as a citizen to my
nation, my state and my
community, and to give to
them my unswerving loyalty
in word, act and deed. To give
them freely of my time, labor
and means.
To aid others by giving my
sympathy to those in distress,
my aid to the weak, and my
substance to the needy.
To be careful with my
criticism and liberal with my
praise; to build up and not
destroy.
Lion’s Club Purposes
To Create and foster a spirit
of understanding among the
peoples of the world.
To promote the principles of
good government and good
citizenship.
To fund and otherwise serve
the civic, cultural, social and
moral welfare of the
community.
To assist financially,
culturally, socially and
morally the handicapped,
disadvantaged and infirm of
the community both directly
and also indirectly.
To unite the clubs in the
bonds of friendship, good
fellowship and mutual
understanding.
To provide a forum for the
open discussion of all matters
of public interest: provided
however, that partisan politics
and secretarian religion shall
not be debated by club
members.
To encourage service-
minded people to serve their
community without personal
financial reward, and to
encourage efficiency and
promote high ethical
standards in commerce,
industry, professions, public
works and private endeavors.
