Principal’s Report
TRANSITION
It is always an exciting time of the year when we begin to prepare our children for the following year, this includes our new 2019 preps. Our new preps have had three visits so far and we look forward to seeing them again on the state wide transition day on Tuesday 11th of December. This is the day that our
Grade 6’s visit their prospective secondary colleges.
Our Grade 5’s have already started their transition into next year with an inquiry unit around leadership which involves a number of leadership workshops where they learn about public speaking, organisation, team work and responsibility. We are also about to begin the process of selecting our Grade 6 student leaders for next year. Our Grade 5 students are currently writing letters or speeches to apply for positions that are available. We are going to have a very difficult
task ahead as there are many worthy students.
In order for our students to have a smoother transition into 2019 we will once again be running two sessions in December for all students to meet their new teacher and have some time with their new class including new students coming to the school for 2019. These transition sessions will take place for one session during the day on the 4th and 11th of December. The aim of these sessions is to meet the teacher and
students and learn more about the year ahead.

Parent helper morning tea
Invitations have been sent home this week to invite all parents who have helped during the year to a special thank you morning tea. Without the fabulous support of our parents throughout the year our school would not function as effectively. Our parents help in a variety of ways including School Council, PFA , classroom helpers, excursions, camps, electives, HPV
just to name a few!
All of this support is greatly appreciated. If you have helped in any way throughout the year no matter how big or small we would like you to join us for morning tea in the grade 5 and 6 area (BER Building) on Friday 7th December from 11am. Your help is very much appreciated, and an integral part of the smooth running of our fabulous school. Hoping you can find the time to come along and join us for a cuppa and a
bite to eat.

NEWS FROM THE SCIENCE ROOM
It’s hard to believe that we only have weeks to
go until the end of the year. What a busy year it
has been in the Science room!
From Prep to Grade Four, the children have
been busy learning about forces and motion.
Preps started off the term by looking at human
movement and how we use our bodies to move
in different ways or make other things move.
We investigated the push and pull forces used
to move objects, through a range of inquiry-
based activities. The children looked at how
different toys move, rolled objects down
ramps, tested different surfaces for rolling and
explored the idea of ‘fair testing’.
Grade 2’s have also been investigating forces
such as buoyancy, gravity and air resistance.
We have learnt about ‘Newton’s Laws of
Motion’ and made paper helicopters and
marshmallow shooters to observe the effects of
gravity and air resistance. The children loved
taking them outside to see how far their
projectiles could go.
During this term, Grade 3’s and 4’s have had
fun exploring contact and non-contact forces
such as gravity, magnetism and friction. The
children worked in collaborative groups,
exploring the basic physical principles of
rollercoasters, so that they could design their
own. We had great fun testing their designs to
see who had the fastest one.
The Electives Program has been hands-on all
the way this term. The children have been
involved in various activities relating to our
Earth and how rocks, minerals and fossils are
formed. They have made a play-dough model
of the Earth’s layers, created contour maps,
learnt about plate tectonics and made edible
sedimentary rocks. It has been super busy!
Thank you to those children who have brought
things in for our nature table. We had some
Science teachers visiting from other schools
recently and they were so impressed by all the
wonderful treasures we have on display.
I look forward to enjoying the rest of this term
with all the fabulous scientists at Tyabb PS.

Why is it important for my child to have an eye test?
In the role as Welfare co-ordinator, I am often approached by both teachers and parents with regards to
some students struggling in the classroom. There are a wide range of reasons as to why some students
struggle with their work and one of these reasons can be an eyesight problem. It is suggested that prior
to commencing Primary School every student has their eyes tested by an optometrist.
What is short-sightedness?
‘Short-sightedness’ or ‘nearsightedness’ are the common terms for myopia—a common eye condition
that makes distance vision blurry. It usually starts in childhood and gets progressively worse until the
child stops growing.
Myopia is a common eye condition in both adults and children. Currently myopia affects around 80
million children around the world, a figure shat is set to rise sharply by 2050. The average onset age of
myopia is also getting progressively younger; in 1983 it was 11 years old, whereas in 2000 it was 8 years
old.
SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR
IN MANY CASES, THERE WILL BE NO SIGNS AT ALL

Tyabb Primary School Bulletin: 22nd November 2018 Page 5 ‘From little things, big things grow’
What causes myopia?
There are two main factors which can mean your child is more at risk of developing myopia—genetics and
lifestyle.
GENETICS
The risk of myopia in children increases when parents are myopic. The risk is nearly::
1 in 2 1 in 3 1 in 4
When BOTH parents are myopic When ONE parent is myopic When NEITHER parent is myopic
LIFESTYLE—Modern lifestyles may influence the development:
1. Prolonged near tasks such as reading and gaming on portable devices.
2. Low levels of outdoor activity.
3. Poor lighting levels
MYOPIA EXPLAINED
Blurry distance vision due to myopia is caused by the eye growing too long which means light is focused in
front of and not on the retina.
Typical eye—light focuses on the retina Myopic eye—as the eye continues to grow,
(the light-sensitive lining inside the eye) for a the myopia progresses and the distance
clear image vision becomes more blurry.
TREATING MYOPIA EARLY CAN SLOW ITS PROGRESSION, REDUCING THE POTENTIAL RISK
OF DEVELOPING FUTURE EYE HEALTH ISSUES. IT IS THEREFORE IMPORTANT TO HAVE
CHILDREN’S EYES EXAMINED REGULARLY

Classroom Capers Grade 3
Did you know the Earth is always spinning around?
Grade 3 students have been investigating the revolution and rotation of our Earth.
Using handmade models we explored how
although the sun appears to move across the
sky during the day, it is
actually Earth’s movement in
space that gives us day and
night.
Grade 3’s met up with Grade 1’s to share our
knowledge of the relationship between the
Earth, Moon and Sun.
Did you know it takes 24 hours for the Earth to
turn all the way around? That makes one day
and one night. This is called the Earth’s rotation.
Did you know it takes 365.25 days for the Earth
to orbit around the Sun? This is called a
revolution or one year.

HELP TYABB ADOPT A SUMATRAN TIGER
Tigers are one of the world’s most endangered species. As few as 3,890 tigers remain in the wild and
tragically, at least 2 are still killed each week for the illegal wildlife trade. By adopting a tiger we can help
make a real difference to the wild tiger’s chance of survival. We will be helping to protect vital habitat, step
up anti poaching efforts and monitor tiger populations. By supporting conservation organisation WWF,
together we can bring about a future where people live in harmony with nature.
To help Tyabb P.S adopt a Sumatran tiger, the Studies of Asia elective group will be holding a ‘Wear it Wild’
day. To show your support wear wild animal print clothing or a wild animal onesie and donate a gold coin.
Money raised will help WWF to enforce zero tolerance for tiger poaching across Asia. It will help protect
habitat and ensure tigers have the landscapes they need to thrive in the wild.
We are fundraising with a gold coin donation on
Wednesday 28th November 2018.
Please show your support by wearing something wild. This could be an animal print hair tie, headband,
jumper, scarf, tshirt, leggings, shorts, socks, shoes, wild animal onesie or all of the above.
Taking part in ‘Wear it Wild’ is a great way to raise funds, raise awareness and have fun too.
Thank you for your support.
