President’s Report Louise Welbourn, Andrew Ling and I met last Wednesday with Melissa Kendal at Carrum Downs Secondary College. We were very pleased that here are now eleven students interested in forming the new Interact club at the school. They have elected their executive, and the paper work is expected to be completed by the end of the week to form the club. They have participated in one project and are organising the next. Within the next couple of weeks they will be making a presentation to the school assembly to encourage other students to be part of the new club. All going well we will schedule an inaugural meeting by the end of July. Last Sunday was our first BBQ at Carrum Downs Bunnings. We were very fortunate with the weather and we had more than enough manpower. As expected it wasn’t as lucrative as the Frankston location but we still managed to make a profit of $750 on the day. Together with previous funds raised we will be able to donate close to $1,000 for “Mothers Supporting Families”. Once again many thanks to Richard Ellis for liaising Bunnings, arranging dates and organising the BBQs. Also many thanks to all the members who supported the project and helped out on the day. Our changeover meeting is only two weeks away so please get your reports in to enable the production of the Annual Report.

On a visit to our Club recently Jill Hobby mentioned the need of making hospital gowns (for which she supplied the pattern) for young patients in Timor Leste. On the night Robyn, a guest of John’s volunteered to make a few. As a result a presentation was made last week to Jill of six gowns , for which she was most grateful. If you have an over- locker or know of someone who does, it is quite easy to make these gowns. The pattern will be supplied.

A Toast to the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, Cayman Island

The Club was chartered in January 1966. Major projects have included the construction of Boys and Girls Homes whilst major annual events organised by the club include the Senior Citizens Party and the Christmas Tree Lighting. The Club has provided a kidney dialysis machine, a learning booth and 2 mobile dental units. The dental clinics in the schools were proving inadequate and the cost of refurbishing several of them would have been enormous. With a mobile dental clinic in an easily movable, self-powered configuration, it could serve all the schools, and could also be used in emergency situations since it would have its own power supply, kitchen and bathroom facilities. The Club also organised he island’s first fishing tournament as a fund raising event. This is still held annually, and has become as well, a favourite pastime event.. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean Sea. The 264 sq. km. territory comprises the three islands of Grand Cayman (the largest island) Cayman Brac and Little Cayman located south of Cuba, northeast of Costa Rica, north of Panama and northwest of Jamaica. Its population is over 60,000 and its capital is George Town.

RI World President ’s June Message

British writer and Royal Air Force pilot Roald Dahl was also an avid photographer who carried his beloved Zeiss camera on his many adventures. At a time when each photograph had to be laboriously developed by hand, on film or glass plate negatives, he amassed a collection of hundreds of images. In later years, these photographs served as a visual record of his travels, a way to document his experiences and share them with others. Yet he always spoke of his memories as being far more vivid than the photographs could ever reflect. So many events and experiences, he said, were simply impossible to capture; they could not be adequately conveyed in images or words. Language may fail, and photographs fade; minds are fallible, and details are lost. But some experiences, as Dahl said, never dim; they stand out in our memories, even after decades, as a wall of flame. They rear up forever over the landscape of our past, dividing our lives into what came before and what came after. That metaphor has stayed with me throughout the past year as I have travelled the world for Rotary. For indeed, this entire year has stood, and will always stand, as a wall of flame in my mind, dividing my life into before and after. When I think back over these 12 months, I see a bright kaleidoscope of images cascading before my eyes, day after day, week after week. The anxious parents in Chandigarh, India, hovering at the bedside of the child recovering from lifesaving heart surgery. The bright flags of Nepal fluttering over an entire village that had been rebuilt after the devastating earthquake. The feeling of awe in St Peter’s Square at the Jubilee of Rotarians celebrated by Pope Francis. Joyful gatherings around the world, in so many countries, in so many languages — with friends I had never before met, my brothers and sisters in Rotary. To serve as President of Rotary International is a colossal undertaking, one that cannot be truly conveyed in images or words. It is a wall of flame that will burn forever in my memory, dancing with light, shifting in shadow. A thousand images jostle together in my mind, a thousand recollections, a thousand emotions. Together, they form a great mosaic; together, they show the bright and glorious work of your hands. As this Rotary year draws to a close, I am prouder than ever to be part of this great organization: one that makes the world not poorer, but richer; replaces despair with hope; raises up those whom fate has brought low; and is a gift to so many, while allowing each of us to Be

a Gift to the World.

K R Ravindran President, Rotary International

Celebrating Rotary

Fellowships Month! By John A. Bernaden, member of the Rotary Club of Milwaukee, USA Did you know that Rotary Fellowships can provide a great way to make new friends around the world and enhance your Rotary experience?  Rotary Fellowships are international, independently organized groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who share a common passion. The oldest fellowship dates back to 1947 when a group of Rotarians who loved sailing began flying the Rotary flag from their boats, calling themselves the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians. Today, more than 3,300 Rotarians sail together in one of 109 Rotary fleets in 37 countries. Currently, more than 60 other fellowships similarly unite Rotarians in friendship and expand opportunities to enjoy their favorite recreational activities, sports, and vocation. These groups range from cycling to skiing, Latin culture to jazz, doctors to photographers, and even wine-tasting to beer. I recently joined the Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians and rallied for a week in Tucson this past February with a dozen couples from Rotary clubs in Canada, California, Colorado, Texas and Arizona. We toured local attractions together, shared meals and enjoyed the comradery of like-minded leaders including two past district governors. My wife Kathleen and I also hope to someday join the thousands of Rotarians in the United Kingdom who caravan together in recreational vehicles across Europe every summer. The Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship is a learning tool for those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and sharing ideas regarding all aspects of wine appreciation. Like most fellowships, the group has an email newsletter and members are encouraged to visit an interactive wine website frequently for updates, features, articles and information on wine events and trips.

While most day-to-day fellowship activities may take place online or through correspondence, the most successful fellowships facilitate regular opportunities for members to interact in person. For example, sporting fellowships hold regional matches and world tournaments, fellowships related to travel or excursions plan destination trips, and vocational fellowships often plan get-togethers at professional conferences and seminars. A growing number of vocationally oriented fellowships have been formed during the past decade. Rotarians who are doctors, lawyers, educators and other professions have started sharing their expertise and experiences with fellow Rotarians in the same professional field around the world. Many fellowships also use their special interests to serve others. The Fellowship of Canoeing Rotarians has organized cleanups of polluted rivers; members of the International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians have conducted training sessions for Rotarians and others in their community; and members of the International Fellowship of Rotarian Scuba Divers join local Rotary clubs to undertake service projects on each of their diving trips. Lastly, developing acquaintances and even friendships by participating in one of the Rotary Fellowships can help improve your understanding of the world.  “The best way to cultivate international understanding is through business and social intercourse,” said Paul Harris at the Pacific Rotary Conference in Tokyo, 1928.

International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians

IFFR IFFR originated in 1965 in Seattle, Washington, USA. To be a member you don’t have to be a pilot or have a plane, but an interest in aviation, which includes travelling and meeting new people. Some of our Club members are IFFR members. We enjoy meeting twice a year with members from all over Australia and New Zealand sometimes. John & Judy, Sam & Natalie and Louise would be only too willing to tell you more.
