Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
A Busy Week for Year 11 – It has been a really busy week for our Year 11 students. On Monday all students were taken
off timetable for a day of workshops with Action Jackson. During the day students focussed on motivational skills such as
building resilience, study skills, time management skills and exam techniques. On Wednesday, 50 Year 11 students also had the
opportunity to visit Birmingham University to experience a taste of university life.
Students are currently busy completing controlled assessments and practical exams. Well done to the Year 11 catering
students who have completed their practical catering exam this week and many thanks to Mrs Hamil for her support. On
Wednesday evening the Year 11 GCSE Drama practical exam also took place. Students focussed on extracts from Blood
Brothers in their performances and the quality of the pieces were outstanding. Many thanks to Miss Frankie Rimmer who has
spent many hours preparing students for their exam.
Finally, on Thursday evening, we had our Sixth Form Open Evening. All students who attended the evening and completed an
evaluation form will be eligible to be entered into the prize draw competition to win an iPad. The draw will take place on
Monday morning in Year 11 assembly!
Year 11 Information Evening - It is also a very busy time for our Year 11 parents and carers! Next week we look
forward to once again welcoming Year 11 students and their parents to school for our Year 11 Information Evening on
Thursday 24 November from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Maths, English and Science have benefitted from technological advancement
in revision materials and the school has purchased software and applications that support these subjects. In order for parents
to help students with these new packages we will be running workshops on the evening to demonstrate how to use the soft-
ware and issuing parents with students’ login details so that they can access materials for themselves. Members of the English,
Maths and Science staff will be available to support and answer any questions.
Year 10 Information Evening - Then it is the turn of Year 10 parents. We look forward to welcoming Year 10 students
and their parents to our Year 10 Information Evening on Thursday 1 December from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. The evening will
provide parents with essential information to support their son/daughter during this academic year. The evening will cover
GCSE reforms, the new English GCSE examination syllabus for both Literature and Language and an opportunity to see the
latest Apps to underpin learning at Cardinal Newman.
Welcome to Miss Charlotte Iceton – On Monday we were delighted to welcome our new careers advisor Miss Charlotte
Iceton. Miss Iceton has already arranged many meetings with our Year 11 students and we hope that she will be very happy in
her new role at Cardinal Newman.
Adverse Weather Procedures - Now the wintry weather is upon us, I would like to remind parents and students of the
procedure should extreme weather conditions force the school to close. Parents will receive notification by text message and
also a notice will be posted on the school website. In addition to this Coventry City Council will carry the information along
with local radio stations (BBC Radio Coventry & Warwickshire; Free Radio; Heart FM; and Touch FM). Please do not block
the school switchboard with calls to enquire if school is open.
Parents are asked to ensure their son/daughter has a warm jacket or coat to wear to school (this should be plain black or
navy) and sensible footwear. Students are reminded to be careful travelling to and from school during the dark winter nights.
Students should always try to avoid travelling alone and make sure that they never talk to strangers.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

School Prayer
Lord, support us all day long. Help us to learn and work together. You have blessed us with special and unique gifts, help us to
use them and not to hide them. Help us to encourage others to use their gifts, to be their best self and prove that we are all
made for greatness. Amen
Science Club Meet Tim Peake
During last academic year students in the Science Club met
and worked regularly from October onwards building a High
Altitude Weather Balloon. After lots of work designing,
building and testing (as well as sorting out the occasional
minor mishap along the way) it was successfully flown last
June, staying airborne for two-and-three-quarter hours during which
time it climbed to an altitude of just over twenty-two miles.
Throughout the flight students were able to track its progress as it
transmitted data on its location and temperature every fifteen seconds. As well as the atmospheric data that was
recovered, the on board cameras captured many wonderful shots of the earth below.
As a result of this project, the school were privileged to receive an invitation to take part in the UK Space Agency’s
School Science Conference held at the University of York in early November. A group of students from the Science Club set off for York on
Friday afternoon and spent the evening at a local hotel. Of course no trip is complete without some time for rest and relaxation so a visit to
a bowling alley during the evening provided plenty of that! The following morning after breakfast, we made the short drive to the University.
Schools from across the UK were there to present work they had done during the course of last academic year related to space science.
Cardinal Newman students were proud to bring along the capsule they had flown and to display a poster describing their work and what
they had found out about the atmosphere as a result of it. In addition to speaking to other students and teachers about their flight and
receiving many very positive comments, Newman students also had a chance to learn about a number of activities others schools had
undertaken which provided ideas for future areas to investigate. A particular highlight of the day was a talk given by British ESA Astronaut
Tim Peake about his stay on the Space Station earlier this year. Later in the day the students were delighted to be able to have the chance to
meet with him and discuss the work they had done, describing what the capsule could do and how it had operated while in flight. They also
appreciated having the opportunity to ask him questions about the experiments he had most enjoyed during his time in space and to learn
something of how these will have potential benefits in addressing medical problems here on earth.

Years 7, 8 & 9 Netball
On Wednesday 16th November, Years 7, 8
and 9 headed to Finham Park School to
play 4 matches in the Coventry Schools
League. Year 7A and B teams made their
debut, with the A team losing 8-5 and the B
team winning 3-0. Congratulations to all
the girls for showing fantastic encouragement towards each other on a
cold evening!
The Year 8 team played superbly winning their match 10-7 and Year 9
played a very close game, unfortunately losing in the last quarter 5-3.
Well done to all girls involved, you were a credit to the school.

Anti-Bullying Assemblies
This week our anti bullying prefect ambassadors have been
leading assemblies to raise awareness and to encourage students
not to stand by when they see someone being bullied. Their
assemblies spread a powerful message, as students listened to
Lucy Alexander's open letter to all children, encouraging them
to be kind following her son taking his own life as he could not
face anymore unkindness.

Poem of the Week
She Walks in Beauty (Lord Byron)
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Post-16 Debate at Newman University
On Wednesday 16th November four year 12 students, Christy Corkery,
Lily White, Sonia Sandhu and Emily Hobbs travelled to Newman
University to take part in a debate competition.
When we arrived we had to choose, at random, a motion to debate with
other schools. Our team were debating in favour of the motion, “All
police should be routinely armed.” The team felt that this was a really
difficult motion to be in favour of, as it is often in the media opposing the
motion. The group were given two hours to use the University’s library
to put together our argument and prepare to debate.
Of the four team members, two students had to speak and deliver the
motion to the audience. Christy and myself were first and second
speakers having to deliver the argument in only four minutes each.
Overall, although we didn’t win the competition, we all gained valuable
experience in debating, communicating and team work. We are grateful
for the experience in public speaking we have gained and are looking
forward to taking part in the next round of debates in March.

Dear Parents/Carers
The shop and TV adverts are letting us know that Christmas is just around the corner! With that in mind, here at Cardinal Newman we
are launching our annual Advent Charity Drive. Our students are renowned for their generosity and for living out the Gospel values
encouraged by school and home. This leaflet outlines all of the that will be happening to raise money for various charities during Advent.
Please encourage your son/daughter to get involved and help others to have a better Christmas. Any parents who have access to
contacts/resources that will aid our efforts, please contact Miss Keane, [email protected].
Last year we donated nearly 400 Advent Calendars to children in
Coventry. Such a small thing can bring joy to others at this time of year.
This year we would love to match that number ... could we give more?
Please donate either an Advent Calendar or contribute to a collection
that your tutor group is organising for calendars.
Cake sales will take
place on the following
dates. Please donate
cakes to your child’s
year group and
encourage them to buy
some tempting treats on
the day.
16th November Year 7 23rd November Year 8
30th November Year 9
7th December Year 10 14th December Year 11
Non- uniform day will be held on 25th November. Students will be allowed to come in their own clothes in
exchange of a £1 donation. All monies raised will be split between Myton Hospice and the Salvation Army who
will use the funds to help homeless people in Coventry this Christmas.
There are hundreds of children in Coventry who will not
get a present this Christmas and there may even be
some students in our school that we will never know
about.
Project Elf is new for Cardinal Newman this year. The
project aims to create a gift bag of presents to the value
of £25 that can be given to children and young people in
Coventry. This could be anything from vouchers, CD’s,
clothes, make up sets etc.
We are asking each tutor group to create one bag of
presents - Which would mean 48 children that will get a
gift this Christmas because of us. Students will be asked
to contribute roughly £1 towards their collection.
Each tutor group will be given 2 chocolate Advent calendars for their
tutorial room. Students will be asked, as always, to donate items of food
for Christmas hampers. As students put an item into the hamper they will
take a chocolate from the calendar.
With at least 50 days covered in the calendars that’s at least 50 items that
will be made into hampers to give to families in Coventry that will struggle
to put food on the table this Christmas.
Every year student from Cardinal Newman help Coventry
Food Bank give out leaflets at Tesco Superstore. This results in a
significant increase in donations from shoppers to the Food Bank.
On Thursday 1st December and Friday 2nd December students will be
joining our Lay Chaplain Laura Kemp at Tesco to donate our time to this
amazing cause.
Please come and say ‘hello’ to us if you are doing your shopping.
