Dear Families,
We are delighted to in-
form you that among
many improvements in
the school we are in-
creasing the number of
classrooms with interac-
tive whiteboards from 4
to 20. The boards will be
in use from after Easter.
This gives teachers a
fantastic new teaching
resource that is highly
motivating for all pupils
as it encourages interac-
tive participation.
Excellent January AS
exam results have just
arrived with several A’s
in Maths, History and
Spanish. We look forward
to these results continu-
ing in June too.
We are also pleased to
inform you that we have
requested permission to
run Bachillerato Español in
Yrs 12 and 13 from Sep-
tember 2010 so that pu-
pils will be able to choose
either A’levels or Spanish
Bachillerato to access Uni-
versity. We are now hop-
ing for a favourable re-
sponse from Junta de An-
dalucía.
Many trips out of school
will be taking place in the
summer term. We hope
our trip to Paris in June
will be of interest to many
pupils, just the same as
the trips to Granada and
along the coast.
“Cats” was a magnifi-
cent production and we
are sure that everyone
will enjoy it. Visitors are
coming from the German
and other local schools to
see it too! Read more on
pages 16 and 17.
With all good wishes,

UPDATE FROM GILLIAN FLAXMAN
Estimadas familias:
Nos es grato informarles
de una de las muchas
mejoras que está imple-
mentando el colegio.
Hemos aumentado el nú-
mero de aulas que utili-
zarán las pizarras blan-
cas interactivas de 4 a
20. Se empezarán a
usar después de las va-
caciones de Semana
Santa. De esta forma, los
profesores tendrán un
fantástico nuevo recurso
para motivar a los alum-
nos ya que las pizarras
fomentan mucho su par-
ticipación interactiva.
Hemos recibido unos re-
sultados excelentes de
los exámenes de A levels
de enero. Ha habido va-
rias ‘A’s en matemáticas,
historia y español. Espe-
ramos también ver unos
resultados igual de bue-
nos en junio.
Además, nos complace
informarles que hemos
solicitado permiso para
cursar estudios de Bachi-
llerato español en cursos
12 y 13 a partir de sep-
tiembre 2010. Los alum-
nos podrán elegir entre
‘los A levels’ y el Bachille-
rato español para acceder
a la universidad. Estamos
en espera de una contes-
tación favorable de la Jun-
ta de Andalucía.
Habrá muchas excursio-
nes durante el último tri-
mestre. Esperamos que
nuestro viaje a París en
junio sea del agrado de
muchos alumnos, igual
que los viajes a Granada y
por la costa que vamos a
realizar.
Veremos una magnífica
producción de la obra
“Cats” este mes. Esta-
mos seguros que todos la
disfrutarán. ¡Incluso ven-
drán del Colegio Alemán y
otros colegios locales para
verla!
Con nuestros mejores de-
seos,
Gillian Flaxman

HEAD OF PRIMARY - UPDATE FROM SUSAN STARK
Last year the children and
staff in the primary school
took part in Earth Hour. This
first started in 2007 in Syd-
ney, Australia when 2.2 mil-
lion homes and businesses
turned their lights off for one
hour to make their stand
against climate change. Now
Earth Hour has become a
global movement with more
than 50 million people across
35 countries participating.
This year we would again
like to encourage all the
families of pupils in the Pri-
mary School to participate in
Earth Hour 2010 which will
take place on Saturday 27th
March at 8.00pm. As this will
be happening during the
holidays it would be good if
pupils could be kind enough
to take a photograph of
themselves, friends and
families supporting Earth
Hour and email it in to me
so that we can make a display
of how the Primary School
participated this year.
In assemblies in recent weeks
we have talked about how
even small, individual actions
can combine to make a sub-
stantial difference to the
worldwide movement.
During our assembly last week
John Ryan come to talk to us
about recycling broken or old
mobile phones. He explained
that the phones are sent away
to factories where the batter-
ies and metal parts are re-
moved and any remaining ma-
terials are smelted for energy
recovery. There are now four
bins in school where old
phones can be left for recy-
cling. Please can you help us
make a good contribution by
sending in your old phones for
us to collect. We have re-
minded the pupils that they
may not bring in old phones
without telling their parents
first!!
Your child should be able to
tell you all about Earth hour
but if you would like to learn
all about Earth Hour, its his-
tory, its aims and its achieve-
ments, please go to Spanish

PRIMARIA DIRECTORA - SUSAN STARK
El año pasado, los alumnos y
el personal de primaria parti-
ciparon en La Hora del Pla-
neta. Este acto comenzó en
2007 en la ciudad de Sídney,
Australia cuando 2.2 millo-
nes de hogares y empresas
apagaron sus luces durante
una hora para mostrar su
oposición a los cambios cli-
máticos. Ahora, La Hora del
Planeta se ha convertido en
un movimiento global con la
participación de más de 50
millones de personas en más
de 35 países.
Este año, queremos animar
a todas las familias de nues-
tros alumnos de primaria a
participar en La Hora del Pla-
neta 2010 que se celebrará
el sábado, 27 de marzo a las
20.30. Como este evento
ocurrirá durante las vacacio-
nes, sería interesante que
los alumnos mandaran una
fotografía de ellos, sus amigos
y familias apoyando este
acontecimiento y me lo envia-
sen por e-mail a
para que podamos celebrar
una exposición de la participa-
ción de primaria de este año.
Durante las asambleas de las
últimas semanas, hemos co-
mentado sobre como incluso
los actos pequeños e indivi-
duales pueden unirse para
causar una diferencia impor-
tante en el movimiento a nivel
mundial.
En nuestra asamblea de la se-
mana pasada, John Ryan vino
para hablarnos sobre el reci-
claje de teléfonos móviles ro-
tos o viejos. Nos explicó que
estos aparatos se envían a fá-
bricas donde les quitan las pi-
las y las partes metálicas y
cualquier material restante es
fundido para ser reciclado. Ac-
tualmente en el colegio tene-
mos 4 papeleras para que de-
positen sus viejos teléfonos.
¿Podrían ayudarnos hacer una
buena contribución enviándo-
nos sus teléfonos viejos para
reciclarlos? Les hemos aclara-
do a los niños que no deberán
traer viejos teléfonos ¡¡sin an-
tes haberles preguntado a sus
padres!!
Su hijo/a deberá poder explli-
carles qué es La Hora del Pla-
neta pero si quieren leer sobre
sus comienzos, sus propósitos
y sus logros, por favor dirijan-
se a:

The children in Foundation Stage got to-
gether for an exciting Sports afternoon to
raise money for Elliot George. We had a
range of activities from bouncing on the
mats to throwing a beanbag. The children in
Reception showed just how well they can
count by counting all the way up to 100.
Nursery was fantastic at bouncing and some
children could even bounce for longer then
five minutes! Running was Pre-nursery’s
best activity and they could run as fast as
lightning! We all had lots of fun cooperating
in this event and can’t wait to do it again.

and sang songs in an Indian Teepee, we had a
ride on Santa the donkey, we played in a huge
sandpit and we had a yummy lunch. We enjoyed
our day out very much.
We were busy, busy, busy all day and were

On Monday
8th March,
2H did
their class
assembly.
In RE they had been learning
about the parables Jesus told.
For the assembly they acted
out ‘The Good Samaritan’. “I
was a narrator and I spoke
very clearly”, said Leah. The
parents enjoyed it so much,
they asked the children for an
encore! “I felt very nervous
when I was speaking in front
of the audience”, said Alex.
The children sang a song, and
Sofia sang part of it on her
own. “ I felt very nervous”,
Sofia said afterwards. “I en-
joyed it when Sofia sang”,
said Francesca. The children
really enjoyed putting on their
show. “I want to do it again!”
said Alvaro. Miss Hill and Mrs
Waller thought that the chil-
dren were fantastic and
looked wonderful in their cos-
tumes. They were very proud
of the class.

Year 4 are learning about taking care of our
environment, hence why we decided to pay a
visit to the Recycling Centre in Casares.
We had a pretty exciting day at the Recycling Centre. In
our visit, the children learn the importance of our ac-
tions now and the consequences for the future.
To our surprise we saw that this waste/recycling center
is the cleanest (also no smell) dump we’ve ever gone
to. There were so many bins, but very well organized.
The children saw many things that could be recycled,
learn how to recycle them and realised amongst other
things that by recycling, we can save trees that would
YEAR 3 - VICTORIAN DAY CELEBRATIONS
Friday 5th March was a
very unusual day for Year
3 as they all participated
in a Victorian Day.
All the children and teach-
ers dressed up and ex-
plored what it was like to
study at a Victorian
School. Pupils wrote in
chalk, chanted times ta-
bles and even had their
fingernails inspected to
ensure they were clean!
The children learned how
to play hopscotch and
made a Victorian tumbling
acrobat toy. It was an
educational and enjoyable
experience for all.

PRIMARY-NEWS YEAR 3 - SCIENCE UNIT ‘HEALTHY TEETH AND
EATING’ BY MS. C. MIDDLETON’
3M’s turn for our class assembly
came around quickly! A chance
for us to share what we had
learned in Science about ‘Healthy
Teeth and Eating’. We presented
a ‘television show’ to other KS2
pupils and our parents. Expert
speakers shared their vast knowl-
edge from the Science World: Pro-
fessor Protein, Mr Mineral and Sci-
entist Sugar from the Food De-
partment, and Captain Canine and
Dr Molar from the Dentist Depart-
ment!
Among fact-sharing, we also per-
formed drama and poetry and
even created a human pyramid to
represent the food pyramid! Fi-
nally we sang a ‘rap’ about how to
brush teeth properly! We really
enjoyed it and we hope everyone
else did, too!

PRIMARY-NEWS YEAR 5 - SAN PEDRO GEOGRAPHY TRIP
BY MRS BACKWELL, MRS WOOD AND MRS AVILEZ
On the morning of Wednes-
day 10th February, as part of
our Geography topic ‘Help
Our Local Area’, Yr. 5 visited
the centre of San Pedro to
interview people about local
facilities.
We wanted to gather infor-
mation about the importance
of things like shops, sports
installations, the beach, the
new underpass and employ-
ment in the area to the peo-
ple we interviewed.
We had designed a question-
naire with this in mind and
chose three different loca-
tions in the town centre for
our survey. We tried to ask
people of different age groups
to get a range of answers.
We will now look at all the
information we have gathered
and see how people think San
Pedro could be improved.
We found people were very
happy to answer our ques-
tions and take an interest in
what we were doing, people
commented on the smartness
and good behaviour of the
children who represented
Laude San Pedro with pride.
Some of our Mums and Dads
came along to help and then
stayed and had lunch at
school.
The following week during
our topic lessons we collated
the information gathered in
the survey. The results are as
follows;
• the majority of people
questioned were between
the ages of 40 and 60,
• most people interviewed
were residents or work in
San Pedro,
• most people thought that
the beach was the most
important feature of San
Pedro,
• on the whole the people
seemed happy with the
quality of services and fa-
cilities of San Pedro,
• there were some areas
that people would like to
change or improve, these
were; they would like the
town and beaches to be
cleaner, a theatre and a
cinema, more medical cen-
tres, more activities for
children, more schools,
less traffic, more parks and
more jobs.
• Yr. 5, the teachers and the
parents really enjoyed the
trip to San Pedro. It was
very interesting analysing
the data which we col-
lected!

PRIMARY-NEWS CELEBRATIONS - ST. PATRICKS DAY
Laude San Pedro Primary celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick's
Day is celebrated on March 17, this religious feast day and the anni-
versary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this
day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick's
Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families
would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the
afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat
were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the tradi-
tional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

The Andalucian winter has really
arrived, and the infirmary has
been busy with lots of coughs
and colds.
The most common ailments con-
tracted during winter are coughs
and colds. For most of us a week
or two with a runny nose and
cough is an annual event. There
are over 100 different viruses
that can cause the common cold
and finding a cure is virtually
next to impossible. Due to cold
weather we spend more time
indoors with other people
and this can help coughs and
colds spread rapidly.
There really is no other treat-
ment for a winter cold than rest.
Drinking fluids might help you
avoid becoming achy and dehy-
drated. Paracetamol or a similar
painkiller, taken in the recom-
mended doses, can help to treat
the symptoms.
There is no foolproof way of
avoiding infection with a cold.
What you can do is take precau-
tions not to spread the infection
further if you do catch a cold.
• Use tissues and dispose of
the tissues in a bin after
use
• Wash your hands, espe-
cially after sneezing or
blowing your nose
• If you sleep with your head
high up on a couple of pil-
lows, you should be able to
breathe more easily at
night.
And remember summer will soon
be here!

Along the way it is being played with in stadi-

including those of students and staff at

Laude Pupils showed The Ball a thing or two
on its last day in Europe before it headed
across The Straights and into Africa. Andrew
Aris, traveling with The Ball, spoke to secon-

Why have Curriculum
Week
Curriculum Week is a
unique opportunity to enrich
pupils’ experience beyond the classroom and
empower lifelong learning. They are a really
important way of allowing students to link sub-
ject themes together.
The key points of Curriculum Weeks are:
• To enrich learning; giving pupils an oppor-
tunity to learn outside of the traditional
classroom whilst reinforcing, especially visu-
ally and kinesthetically, that which they
have learned in the classroom
• To broaden pupils’ horizons through cross
curricular activities
• To improve pupils’ social interaction and
skills enabling them to represent the school
• To raise pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and
cultural awareness, (appreciating and valu-
ing their culture and that of others by ob-
serving the interaction of cultures in the
wider society)
• To enhance teamwork and build self-esteem
• To inspire, motivate and generate interest

lum los alumnos de Y8 realiza-
ron una Gran escapada a la
creación literaria y para ello,
tuvieron que modernizar un
cuento clásico europeo. La ac-
tividad propuesta la llevamos a
cabo en durante dos sesiones.
En primer lugar, realizamos
una actividad grupal leyendo
una selección de cuentos de
los hermanos Grimm,-pie de
foto- lo que entusiasmó a los
alumnos, ya que lo hicimos a
través de una página web in-
YEAR 8 - “LA CREACIÓN LITERARIA” DE STA. IRISARRI teractiva, posteriormente, ex-
plicamos el cuento y cada
alumno iba aportando posi-
bles variaciones del cuento
original, posteriormente, ca-
da alumno escogió uno distin-
to y, por último, cada alumno
produjo un cuento propio, es-
to entusiasmó a los chicos.
Algunos ejemplos son la ver-
sión de “El enano saltarín” de
Beatriz Mirón o “Caperucita
Roja” de Fausto Diantina.

SECONDARY - NEWS ENGLISH - ’GUIDED IMAGERY’ BY MRS. H. PALMER
During Curriculum Week Key Stage 3
discovered 'Guided Imagery' through
meditation. Mrs. Palmer's classroom
was filled with scented candles and re-
laxing music; cushions and rugs were
scattered on floor whilst pupils prepared
to go on a special journey, places vis-
ited included: Australia, London, Dubai,
Disneyland and The Maldives. After
their adventures pupils discussed their
experiences and then produced a piece
of creative writing based on their
trip. Great fun was had by all and the
exercise proved to be an exciting and
experiential way of dealing with 'The
Great Escape'.
YEAR 7-MEDITATION
BY MEGAN ROBINSON
On Tuesday 9th of February, Year 7 had a meditation
lesson. This involved bringing in cushions and then ly-
ing back on them whilst Mrs. H. Palmer read a script.
In this PowerPoint would see just how your imagina-
tion flows.
These are just some of the photos that were taken of
Year 7 as they settled down to begin their adventure.
Imagination is a powerful thing, let loose and anything
is possible.
From your own special place to, maybe, a tropical
rainforest. It’s up to you, all you have to do to go on a
journey is relax and imagine. You could go anywhere!!
Meditation is great fun but it also has some positive
answers afterwards, for example Year 7 not only had a
FANTASTIC time, but it helped us to become more
confident in ourselves. It also helps with story writing.

SECONDARY - NEWS ENGLISH - ’WORLD BOOK DAY´BY MS. HOAD
On Thursday 4th March 2010 all Key
Stage 3 students dressed up as charac-
ters from books, plays and poems. Some
students dressed in exotic far-eastern
costumes, while others put on fluffy wigs,
long beards, capes and boots! During
their English lessons, they visited some of
the Primary classes to read books to the
younger students, to look at the illustra-
tions and to generally enjoy a cosy chat
about their favourite books.
Here are just a few of the photographs of the fun we had on World Book Day. If you would like
to see more pictures, please come and see our display along the corridors of Laude San Pedro.

NOTICIAS - SECUNDARIA INGLÉS - CELEBRANDO EL DÍA MUNDIAL DEL LIBRO
DE SAM GULLIVER (PREFECT)
Laude San Pedro
ha estado muy
ocupada celebran-
do el día mundial
aprendieron a leer libros
más complejos y fue una
experiencia divertida para
todos. Hubo momentos de
felicidad, en el cual los
niños de primaria se les
notaban muy felices al lo-
grar realizar una actividad
que nunca antes habían
realizado, aunque ahora si
gracias a la gran colabora-
ción y ayuda de algunos
alumnos de secundaria
que siempre mostraron un
gran interés.
