Newsletter Issue No 3, Term 1, 6th March, 2020
Principal’s Message - Neil Schneider
It is that time of year again when Casino High School
progresses from the usual busy program to an even
busier program.
I look forward to the Student Representative Council
(SRC) Assembly on Monday 9th March where the
2020 representatives will be inducted and introduced
to the school and community. It is an honour for any
student to be on a school’s SRC but especially at
Casino High School which has a tradition of previous
representatives being high achievers.
Year 12 Students are completing their Half Yearly HSC
Exams and I hope this is a valuable learning
experience in helping them maximise their HSC
results.
Students have, and are presently, representing Casino
High School in a number of sporting events and are
gaining selection to both North Coast and State teams.
These include swimming (Sate Carnival), touch football
(Regional) and rugby league (Zone).
The rebuilding of the canteen, toilets and gymnasium is
progressing well and appears to be on schedule to
meet the expected completion date set for the end of
next month.

As you all know, speaking is an important employability skill and it is one that our students usually do very well. Each
year we invite Marcelle Bernard to deliver her highly popular workshop on Public Speaking to Year 7. Marcelle is
entertaining and has a whole bag of tricks she shares with students to help them make the most of their speaking
skills. If you'd like to know more about Marcelle and what she does the links below will take you there. Marcelle will
join us at Casino High School on Thursday, 11th June.

Year 8 Dare to Dream An Upcoming Year 8 Excursion to Cape Byron Headland on Tuesday 2nd June.
Year 8 students are invited to attend
the Dolphin Dreaming workshop run
by Indigenous Arakwal guide, Aunty
Delta.
This excursion is run by the English
Department every year to
complement our unit of work on the
concept of Reconciliation.
Through story, dance and creative
expression, this program provides
participants with the opportunity to
learn about the life and culture of our
Arakwal people. Presented by
Arakwal Aboriginal guides,
participants join traditional owners in
art, dance and ceremonies, learning
about the significance of the land and sea and importantly dolphins to our people.
This Term 2 unit celebrates the diversity of Aboriginal Australian culture through a close study of a variety of texts
about and by Aboriginal Australians.
There is no cost to students as the school pays the fees for those attending the workshop.
And Poetry …. What would English be without Poetry? We have talented wordsmiths among us. A sample of recent works.

A Tree
I see
Beautiful shades of green
The smooth slender side of the trunk
Twigs sticking out at odd angles
Red apples growing
I hear
The wind whistling through the leaves
Water dripping from a leaf
Two leaves bumping together
A twig hitting the side of the balcony
I touch
The crease in a leaf
The smooth trunk
A rough twig
A soft feather
I long
To climb that tree
To be a bird
To lie on a leaf ,
To fly

Fishing Fishing is like watching paint dry, They might be shy. You have to have patience when they don’t bite. Just stay quiet. Change your bait. Get a sharper hook. And a bigger weight. Flick the rod, Cast out the line. Don’t lose your patience, it takes time. The best spot for fishing is in the river, Where the bull sharks make you shiver, Or at the beach where the great white make you quiver. You can go out in a boat or send it on foot, down gullies and streams, the home of the eels. Some days you get lucky some days you don’t, how you know is by watching your float. Watch for bubbles, coming from under the rocks where the old catfish hides, And under logs where the turtle glides. From sunrise when the rooster crows, to sunset when the daylight goes, there is always time for fishing. By M.B.

Tax File Numbers – Important Step…
Any student will need at Tax File Number if they start
work (part-time and full-time or casual) and all students
planning on a tertiary education require one when they
enrol. Importantly, current Year 12 students are
reminded that they will be requested to provide their
Tax File Number (TFN) on enrolment to TAFE or
university next year, so it is worthwhile getting an
application submitted early! Students must now apply
for a TFN online and have their identity verified through
an interview at a participating Australia Post Office.
To apply and to find out about participating Post
Offices, visit Apply for a TFN or visit your School
