INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Some students take a long time to realise that there are actually two types of work in secondaryschool. There is the obvious work, the work your teacher specifically tells you to do and that iscompulsory: homework, working on assignments, preparing for tests and assessments. But studentswho get good results in school take a larger measure of responsibility for their learning. This meansthat the nights where they do not have much compulsory work, they also do independent learning. These are the additional things you do, if you have no other schoolwork to do that night, to improveyour understanding of your subjects. It is what students who get good marks are doing, they are justnot talking about it to their friends!

Examples of independent learning:- Reading- Reviewing what you have been learning at school that week- Extra practise on questions you find hard- Research on an area you are interested in learning more about- Making a mind map about what you have been learning- Making study notes on a topic- Improving your touch typing skills- Reading ahead in your textbook- Improving your study skills (you can complete units on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au)- Doing work from a different textbook or study guide for one of your subjects (check the school

library, local library and bookshops).

Some nights you will not have time to do any independent learning. Other nights you will have no homework and will spend the whole time allocated to schoolwork for that night working on independent learning tasks. Your teacher may even give you a sheet that has suggestions of independent learning work for that subject. If you are unsure, you can always ask. This means in secondary school you can never say ‘I have nothing to do’ – this really just means ‘I have nothing compulsory to do at the moment!’.

One component of independent learning in high school is making your own study notes or summaries. You can learn more about how to make study notes in the unit ‘Summarising’ onwww.studyskillshandbook.com.au

With changes to the Health and Safety requirements in the Department of Education, we would like to remind you that we require parents who are driving their own children and/or other students to complete a travel form which requires the school

sighting current car registration papers, a current license and current comprehensive insurance.

This form can be obtained from the front office or from Mr Stockwell.

In the case of driving other students, Kandos High School’s Health and Safety team have determined that you will also require a Working With Children Check (WWCC) to be completed.

This can be commenced on line at the Office of the Children’s Guardian where there is a video tutorial on how to apply. http://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/child-safe-organisations/working-with-children-check/apply/apply

It can take up to four weeks for the checks to be completed so if you need a WWCC number please get started as soon as possible.

Please remember to check that you are a Volunteer in the “Purpose of Check” section. This will ensure no charge for those who do not require a WWCC for employment purposes.

For more information, contact the front office.

The Maths department will be running after school maths tutorials this year. If you need assistance with your maths work come to

ROOM 15, TUESDAY 3:30 – 4:30 pm This is a free service provided by the teachers to assist Kandos High students and parents. All Students and Parents are welcome to attend.

Your school community may be seeing all the media coverage about the tragic shooting in Florida this morning. It can be really hard seeing bad world news and can bring up a whole lot of emotions and fears.

Here are our best tips for what you can do to support teenagers today:

1.Reassure them that they are safe and that gun laws are very different in Australia. 2.Tell them that violence isn't the norm and most people think it's not okay.

3.Parents can take a break with their teen and go do something nice together.

You can also encourage them to take these practical steps to deal with bad world news:

1.Take breaks from your news feed. 2.Do something that makes you feel better.

3.Join the conversation on the ReachOut Forums. 4.Talk to your family and friends.

5.Get support from ReachOut.com.

Your school’s community of parents and carers may be keen to talk too. Let them know they can chat to other parents about supporting their teenagers on the ReachOut Parents Forums.
