As we welcome the New Year in we have seen the end of an era at C&O Tractors. After more than 60 years serving the Dorset farming community Michael Loader has retired as Area Sales Manager. Mike is well known and liked at farms across the area and I’m sure his customers will miss his visits. Here at C&O Blandford we gave Mike a well-deserved send off just before Christmas and I’m sure you’ll join us in wishing him a long and happy retirement.

C&O NEWS...

Retirement after 60 Years Serving Dorset Farmers.After 60 years serving the Dorset farming community Blandford salesman, Michael Loader, has retired. Mike began his working career 1953 as a 15 year old Agricultural Engineering apprentice at Hill Sawtells in Yeovil, the local Massey dealer. Mike then became Parts and Accessories Manager as the company expanded to take on the Fordson dealership and become Yeovil Tractors.

Mike started selling tractors in 1961 when he joined Captain Vivian at the new Dorset Agricultural Ltd at West Mills in Dorchester. This was where Mike’s lifelong association with Ford and New Holland tractors began. At this time Mike was selling Dextas, Majors, Power Majors and Super Majors and recalls the derision amongst the staff when the price of a new tractor went over £1000, and the fear it wouldn’t sell! In the seventies the firm became Dorset Tractors and Mike continued to work there selling 100 and 10 series tractors, conventional balers and trailed New Holland foragers, selling 32 of these in one year before moving to join Stanley Ponds.

As New Holland’s 50th anniversary year for Basildon built tractors draws to a close Mike still fondly remembers being flown, with other Ford salesman, to Southend airport and then driven to Basildon to see the newly built tractor plant. As we celebrate the half century of tractor production at Basildon it is amazing that Mike has followed that journey all the way.

Mike was still working for Stanley Pond Ltd in Blandford when they were taken over by Edward and Andy Coles to form C & O Tractors Ltd on June 1st 2000. At this time Mike was selling 40 Series tractors, then TS – TSA and TM Tractors. Latterly, Mike has been helping David Stickland to become well established in his old trading area.

Away from his job Mike drove National Hot Rods and famously came second in class in the 15U Skeat Great Britain Championships.

These days Mike plays golf regularly at Sherborne Golf Club and spends time with Val, his wife, his children Diane, Colin and 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mike has been a great servant to Fords, New Holland and all the dealerships he has worked for. On his retirement we can safely say nobody in Dorset has ever sold as many blue tractors as Mike and never will do.

Andy Coles of C&O Tractors presented Mike with a model Fordson Major tractor on behalf of C&O Tractors.

Dick Spencer, New Holland Marketing Manager presented Mike with a retirement gift on behalf of New Holland.
