Year 9 Inquiry Fit for life Advance elective class

The fit for life class this semester has been a great class to teach. I have really enjoyed teaching this group and we have done some great things, learning about health and fitness and sports coaching. Firstly we did a lot of personal training learning about

the fitness industry. This included our gym session and our boot-camp at Mornington. Our final excursion we went to The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre and partici-pated in a 2 hour sports session, including basketball, soccer and squash. We then went to the pool for a 2 hour session, riding the flowrider which is an artificial wave, using boards trying to surf. It also included time on the water slide. The students had a great day. Secondly we learnt how to coach sports sessions and then the students coached a sports clinic coaching 5 different sports to a group of 60 grade 5 students at Rangebank primary school. This session went for 1 hour 30 minutes and the fit for life students organised and ran the whole session themselves. All I did there was take photos and annoy the group. The sessions at Rangebank primary school were a huge success and it shows just how well our students at Lyndhurst can represent themselves and our school in such a positive way. I was really pleased with the job they did. The feedback from Rangebank was outstanding, the grade 5 students raved about our students and the activities. The Rangebank teachers thought our students did an amazing job. The students also assisted the staff here at LSC with the running of the tabloid sports sessions for the grade 6 Orientation day. Well done to all the Fit for life students for 2016 on an outstanding year. Mr Tuite

Dear Parents/Carers of Students (Years 7-12), I am writing to inform you that we have received information from Victoria Police about local ‘pop-up’ parties and social gatherings being organised via social media which are unsafe for the young people attending. These parties are being hosted in private homes, abandoned buildings and public halls across south eastern and eastern Melbourne. Victoria Police acknowledges that many young people are also attending safe parties. However, Victoria Police has made a number of recommendations to ensure young people can safely attend local gatherings: Talk to your children and be mindful of where they are; Be vigilant around monitoring all of your child’s social media accounts (consider there

may be multiple accounts) and look online at any events your child wants to attend; Investigate any party your child is attending, and be satisfied of where your child is and

who they are with. If a party location is unknown one or two weeks prior to a party date, this may be of concern.

Underage alcohol drinking and drug use is not recommended. Students with any wellbeing concerns or issues they are encouraged to speak to our well-

being officer.

If you have any information that may assist police, phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

If you are concerned that your child has been the victim of a sexual assault and may require support, please contact Centre Against Sexual Assault on 1800 806 292.

Kind regards,

Konnie Prades Principal

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

CELEBRATION On Monday 14th November we celebrated the achievements of those students who successfully reached their goal of 15+ books in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. 18 students were celebrated for aiming high with a delicious lunch, certificates from the Premier, and many prizes of books, chocolates and stationary. In total all the students who joined the Premier’s Reading Challenge at Lyndhurst read over 500 books. A fantastic achievement! We cannot stress how important developing a reading habit is and how much it adds to your students’ chances of academic success. We have the best collection of current fiction and invite the whole family to access our collection. Ms. FitzGerald

ONE MILLION STARS TO END VIOLENCE PROJECT. The Casey Cardinia Libraries are participating in the One Million Stars to End Violence project. This project was initiated by Maryann Talia Pau in response to incidents of violence in our communities. Stars are woven out of ribbon, paper or other materials and each star is a representative of the light we can bring to our communities by ending violence in all its forms. It is an international movement with stars being woven in Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Europe and the USA. Please see http://www.onemillionstars.net for more information. Casey Cardinia Libraries have registered as a Star Weave Community. This means that we commit to making and collecting 10,000 woven stars before May 2017. As a local community group we would like to extend an invitation for you to join us and help us to reach this goal. To play a part all you have to do is weave some stars and drop them off at one of our libraries. Currently the libraries at Pakenham, Narre Warren, Endeavour Hills, Doveton Library, Hampton Park and the Mobile Library are participating and would be happy to accept your stars. Please see our website www.cclc.vic.gov.au for contact details for each branch. The instructions on how to weave a star can be located on the One Million Stars to End Violence website with a video and printed instructions available. This could be a fun activity to do at the end of the year with students. The stars can be woven in var-ious materials. The website suggests using ribbon, but you can use any materials you have access to, including magazines, newspapers, wrapping paper, fabric or felt, or thick paper. The thick paper is probably easier for children to manipulate. Please contact the library is you have any further questions. We would love you to be involved in this project with us.
