MAY 2015 Welcome back to the pool & the commencement of the 2015-16 season. We have had a great start this term, kicking off swim training for development, fitness and competition squads. A warm welcome to new members and especially to returning swimmers. Whether you’re swimming for fitness, social benefits or just to clear the head, I hope you thoroughly enjoy being a part of the Swimming Club and receive valuable instruction from our experienced coaches. For those wishing to compete this marks the start of the mighty Short Course Events. Make sure you put the meet dates on your calendar so you are prepared. Last season was very successful with many swimmers competing in various competitions and time trials. As a club effort we received up to 37 - 1st places, 43 - 2nd places & 32 - 3rd places. 7:00pm START MEETING

All Welcome

It was fantastic celebrating the 2014-15 season at the club presentation night in March. Performance wise there has been an unbelievable rise in PB’s and Country & State participation. I had the pleasure of presenting trophies to the Open and Club Champions on Presentation night. Chelsea Mailer was awarded Club and Open Champion. Chelsea is an absolute professional with her approach and

dedication to swimming. She can be compared to the likes of Australian swim champion Belinda Hocking. She has good work ethic, never whinges, high attendance at swim training and expects achievement. Harry Botta, who was awarded Open BoysChampion, is an absolute pleasure to coach.I have watched Harry develop and become a strong individual. I like the way he operateswith maturity. The way Harry has committed to swimming has given him life skills.

COACHES CORNER I would like to make special mention of the driving force of the Benalla swim club; Marquerite Boyd and Richard Mailer, both being awarded dual winners of Club Person of the season. Marquerite is not just the treasurer but a ‘treasure’ of the club. It is a thankless job, but Margot has been behind important club fundraising this season. Richard is the power-horse behind the club, a calm leader who sails through. He is a steadfast force always trying to better the club. I also take this opportunity to thank the hardworking committee. I thank coaches Libby and Vickie for providing our swimmers with unbelievable expert advice. Coaching juniors is not an easy gig. After a rest it is important for the swimmers to come back into a light workload to avoid injury. Don’t forget it’s all about life balance; Education - Diet - Sporting Commitment Enjoy and have a good time! Head Coach -Max Batey

As a coach, our young and older swimmers continue to make an impression on me. Below are some of my thoughts on the individuals from the Benalla swim squad that train at our club week after week. Keep up the great work guys, you are all stars in your own individual way. For a little inspiration I will leave you one of my favourite Michael Jordan quotes; “I can expect failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying”Cath Botta: Mother Dolphin, setting the exampleSally Young: The Competition SwimmerHarry: The StirrerLochie: The horse rider, gives 100% at training... when he’s there.Caitlyn: Our home grown Queen of the LakeCharlie: Gentle, with a huge heartAmelia: Madam ButterflyZac: Lane etiquetteChelsea: Leads by example, extraordinary swimmerCassidy: Has the intensity of an 18 year old - InspirationalMaddison:The Gymnast & Chaser, always nipping away at Cassidy’s toesLily: Can smile underwater. Mia: Kind and gentle lane sharerDom: Champion barrackerDarcy & Stella: So good at asking questionsAmber: Powerful kick & such a smiley personMeg: Steps up and pushes through the shiveringSannah: Loves to swim cause it feels so relaxedLiam, Sam & Daniel: Great diving energy

LibbY FOUbiSTER- Fitness/Competition Swim Coach

Harry has been with the Benalla Swim club for 10 years. He is a Year 12 student at Benalla P12. Harry is currently coached by Max Batey and Libby Foubister. Harry might look as cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce at swim training but when in competition mode this boy knows how to turn on the jets. Harry made it to his first All Juniors Event at age 10. He participated in his first Country Championships aged 11 years and has continued through each year for the past 6 years running. Harrys parents Cathy & Peter have been valuable and active committee members of the Benalla Swim Club, but most importantly they have supported Harry in achieving his swimming goals to compete all around Victoria.

My First Swim at MSAC!

Lining up at MSAC

Last November development squad swimmer, Finn Walsh participated in the 7-10’s swim event at MSAC recording pleasing times in the 50m Back, Free & Breast stroke. Feeling nervous and excited at the same time, Finn’s first impression of MSAC was that it was ‘open and still’. “The diving blocks were steep and I got to see my name light up on the digital screen.” Finn might have been initially worried about swimming the distance but remarked what a great feeling it was finishing each race and thinking... I swam in that pool! With a keen eye for engineering Finn commented “Its a pretty amazing pool because they can lower the floor to adjust the depth for diving.” Finn is one of the many country swimmers in his age group that get inspired and motivated from the experience of swimming in this annual event at MSAC. “I felt that I wanted to keep up my training with Benalla Swim Club so I can have more opportunities like that in the future.’’
