Year 6 Geography Trip to Carymoor

Year 6 Responsible Tourism

Year 7 Marauders MapsOur trip to Carymoor Environmental centre and landfill site was very exciting. We were split into two groups. My group began the day with a tour of the landfill site. We went to see where all the bin juice, called leachate, was cleaned in huge round tanks. Eventually it is clean enough to go back into rivers and streams. The leachate was very lumpy and VERY stinky and it made all of us feel a bit sick looking at it. We also went to see the massive landfill site where all of our rubbish goes that is not recycled. There was a wide variety of objects in it piled up high. Walking back from the landfill, we saw a deer which ran past us at an amazingly fast speed! It was jumping over bushes but then disappeared into the dis-tance. On our walk, our leader Karen would also occasionally lift up some aluminium sheets that were left around the landfill site to see if there were any snakes and insects lying underneath them. We thought we might see a grass snake, but perhaps it was out hunting. All we saw were a few spiders! The tour was really fun. After lunch, we pretended we were living in a shanty town in Kenya. The shanty town at Carymoor has been built from rubbish found in the landfill. In the shanty town, there were five houses in different sizes. I was in a group of five and got put into a house which was tiny. Now I realise how lucky I am with my life. We had the chance to go round all the houses. The nicest one was where there was a comfy sofa and a spare room. We were then given a task where we had to put some cards in order about things that we think are most important in life, for example: food, water, money, education and shelter. My group got the order right. All in all, it really was a great day and I wish I could go there again. Ollie L 6DEH

In Year 6 Geography we have studied tourism and what it means to be a responsibletourist. As part of their work the pupils were tasked with creating a television advert that would help to advise people on the way they should act when visiting other places around the world. Pupils used the green screen technique to create some really fantasticadverts. Here is the effort from Hector and Jack, assisted by their cameraman Charlie. I think this is good enough to be used professionally and I was so proud of the boys andtheir final result. Well done boys! Please click the camera icon above to see their advert.Mrs Stubbs

In Year 7 Geography the pupils had a go at creating their own Millfield Marauders Maps. This activity was back by popular demand as the pupils had seen some examples of last year’s pupils on the wall in my classroom. The task wasdesigned to show the pupils thatfictional work can sometimes be used as the inspiration for learning about traditional techniques. The pupils have to learn how to represent their school ground in simple, easy to understand, yet interesting formats while remembering to include all of the key points that every good map should have. Here are some examples of their imaginative andsuperbly designed creations.Mrs Stubbs

On Wednesday 7 June Mr Wynn tookIsaac Searle and James Champion to theDauntseys Dodecahedron Finals. They did very well and achieved 4th place. This places them in the top 1% of young mathematicians from this area. A very big well done! Mrs Bone

Mrs James’ Year 6 pupils were working on converting percentages to decimals and fractions just before half term. The great work they completed is on display in the maths corridor.Mrs James

Year 8 were treated to a day of science and maths demonstrations and exercises on Tuesday. The premise was that a meteorite had crashed into earth. In Chemistry, the young scientists needed to analyse the content of the rock by using flame tests. In Biology, they extracted DNA from the ‘alien slime’ on the rock, using a complex procedure, then modelled the structure of DNA using sweets! The Physics session involved minute adjustments to one variable at a time (angle of launch or volume of water) to find the optimum conditions for launching an ‘exploratory rocket’ into space as far as possible! The Maths activity had the pupils equipped with a campus map and a series of questions to answer. All of the activities were appreciated and enjoyed by the pupils, and helped them get a feel for the school campus and gave ataster of some of the interesting types of lessons they may encounter in the future. Mr Sawrey-Cookson gave an interesting talk on life in Year 9, and some of last year’s MPS Year 8s visited the theatre to answer all the questions our pupils had. Overall, the day was a greatsuccess! Please click the camera icon above to see more photos.

The Year 8 pupils have completed their exams and have now been taking part in the extra curricular Year 8 Programme. So far, pupils have completed art work at the top of the Tor; listened to an engaging talk on courage by John Bradshaw; taken part in a Science and Maths day at Millfield, threw themselves into a stage make up workshop and several other sessions. Pupils have really enjoyed this varied programme of enrichment activities and have been completing the Year 8 project books to document their work.

On Thursday all of Year 8 ventured over to the senior school to try their hands at a variety of sporting activities. This was a great opportunity for all of the pupils to meet some of the Millfield PE and Games staff. Please click the camera icon above to see more photos.

This week Year 4 got stuck in to our new unit on ‘How Humans Work’. We looked at how to keep our teeth healthy and did adisclosing tablet test to see if we really have been brushing as well as we could be. We also took part in a St. John’s

Ambulance first aid training course. The children learnt to deal with common hazards such aschoking, burns and what to do if you find someone unresponsive. If you are ever in trouble call on Year 4, we now know what to do! Mrs. Robbins

Year 4 Taking Care of Themselves and Each Other Year 4 Healthy Eating Week

Year 4 took part in Healthy Eating Week. They made some ‘peasy cheesy canapes’ and tested some water infused withstrawberries, lime and lemon, mint and ginger andcucumber. By the end of the session they knew thatkeeping hydrated, eating a rainbow of fruit and vegetables daily and eating breakfast every morning, not to mention doing some exercise, would all help them to grow up into super healthy adults. All the information about the week, including a webinar cook-along to remind pupils how to make the ‘peasy cheesycanapes’ can be found by clicking here>> Mrs Henderson

EAL Trip to Crealy Adventure Park

On Tuesday 13 June the EAL pupils went on their final trip of the year. As a special treat for all their hard work they enjoyed a day out at Crealy Adventure Park. The sun shone and with hardly anyone else in the park the pupils were free to try out the variousrollercoasters and waterslides as many times as they liked. The scariest part of the day was not any of the rides but having a giant seagull swoop down and steal Krijn’ssandwich from under his nose. Apart from that, a great time was had by all.Miss Henson

EAL Pupil of the Week

This week’s ‘EAL Pupil of the Week’ award goes to Manou S. She has continued to participate brilliantly in class and work well with the other pupils. This week she has worked hard to produce a book cover and blurb for a story she is going to write before the end of term. We look forward to reading the finished story.

Silent Auction Pottery PrizePictured here is parent Vicky Quaile who won a two hour pottery session in thesilent auction at the May Fair. This Monday she came to claim her prize. Vicky wanted to have a go at throwing on the potters wheel which she did and ended up with three small bowls. She is planning oncoming back once they are fired to a Bisque to glaze and decorate them.

Manou has continued to show enthusiasm for reading, selecting books independently and is now racing along the reading chart towards the end of term prize. Keep up the hardwork Manou! Miss Henson

8DMC Tutor Group Trip

On Monday 8DMC went on their final tutor group trip to glorious downtown Yeovil. First they stuffed themselves fullof pizza, ribs, wings, garlic bread and some dubiously mixed fountain drinks. “I can’t move. Can someone drag me to thecinema, please?” whimpered Clarissa J.It was then off to see Wonder Woman, just a few steps away. Those with a bit of room left topped up their bellies with sweets, popcorn and some odd frozen pink and purple drink. “The movie was great,” reported Harvey H, “it was like watching a ballet, except instead of dancing, people hit each other a lot.” India-Rose O said: “Everyone was very twisty!” “Please drag me to my seat,” begged Clarissa J.Finally, and somewhat unbelievably, the group headed to Kaspa’s for a late-night dessert. “This sundae tastes likediabetes!” exclaimed Joe E. “Ooh, I’ve found a second wind,” utteredClarissa, with a raised eyebrow. A great time was had by all.Mr Cageao

If the sun is shining then Berewall girls need no excuses to head down to our very own stylish BBQ area that has been built by Mr Leonard. We welcomed Mrs Smith, Bryany and Jack who will be joining us in our new location in September.@BerewallHouse

The Chestnut boys were finding this lovely sunny weather a little hot so cooled off with fresh fruit smoothies and ice creams with various ‘nutritious’ toppings! To make their smoothies they could choose from a selection of fruit and vegetables including:blueberries, strawberries, mango, pineapple, blackberries, banana, avocado and kale.Unsurprisingly, not many of the boys chose kale as an ingredient! @MPS_Chestnut

On Sunday, the boarders went to Airhop in Bristol, which is one of their favourite trips. As usual, they raced around and bounced to their heart’s content, until they were all thoroughly exhausted.

Summer has arrived in Hollies which resulted in not one but two BBQs in House over the weekend. The onset of the good weather also saw a water fight in the back field, much to the delight of the girls who have been asking for one since mid-February! @MPS_Hollies

Athletics

The U12 A cricket team, captained by Ollie H, produced their best performance of the year to beat a strong Taunton side in the County Cup semi final. MPS won the toss and elected to Bat. Dominic K got us off to a flying start scoring 45 off 23 balls. Freddie T anchored the innings, batting 24 overs for 55. Alex P contributed a solid 49 to see MPS reach an impressive 188 for 4 from their 25 overs. When fielding, the MPS boys created a fantastic atmosphere, with James S and Felix S making an exceptional contribution on the boundary. Dominic K and George B

bowled particulary well, picking up 5 of the Taunton wickets between them. The boys are now excited at the prospect of a County Cup final.

MPS girl’s cricket continued their good run defeating Gloucestershire on the main ground. Bowling first, we dismissed our opponents for 67 with all playerscontributing. We lacked concentration with the bat but still managed to win with three wickets remaining. India-Rose O top scored with a composed 31.

English Schools Cup regional roundOur senior boys and girls teams competed at the regional final of the English Schools Cup athletics competition. A complicated event where we are only allowed a limited number of athletes and they each have to do a track and a field event. At thehalf way stage the boys were struggling as they had been decimated by injury and the girls were lying second. It is only the top team that goes through but the girls rose to the challenge and won the event by a comfortable margin in the second half. They will have to improve again if they want to do well in the final but they all seem keen for the challenge.Thank you to Mr Henderson and Mr Stubbs who helped the teams on the day and during training.Mr Duke

At last Ava A had a great birthday present by finding her perfect pony Roo.

Golf

The Millfield Prep golfers headed to Hill Valley GC for this years IAPS where seven pupils played against the best under 14 golfers in the United Kingdom. First out was Joanna C who played well and returned 15 points after her first 9 holes. Freddie T and Samuel P werenext in and played steadily for 21pts and 16pts respectively. Oliver S and Lowen S also made consistent starts to leave them contendingfor the Under 10s trophy. The rounds of the morning went to Patience R scoring 27pts (level par gross!) and Harriet L was just 2 shots further back. This left the Under 13s team in with a great chance if Sam, Patience and Freddie could have a good back 9. Harriet, Oliver and Lowen were also in contention for the Under 12s team trophy.Sam and Joanna were first in for the afternoon and scored 17pts and 11pts. Freddie then bounded up the last with a spring in his step and shot a brilliant level par back 9 to score 27pts. This left Freddie with the clubhouse lead for the overall championship and also the Under 13s team in a great position. Oliver and Lowen again played steadily in the afternoon and achieved high finishes in the Under 10competition. Patience also played well in the afternoon to shoot 22pts with only Harriet out on the course that could beat her for the girls championship. Harriet played very well but didn’t get the points she needed to catch Patience, meaning it was a first and second for Millfield with Patience becoming the 2017 IAPS girls national champion. As the final groups came in nobody could overtake Freddie’s 48 points and as a result of his brilliant back 9, he became the 2017 IAPS boys national champion. This left just the team results to come and Millfield finished in 2nd place in the Under 13s just 2 shots behind the winners. The Under 12 team also finished with a top 3 finish, narrowly behind the top two teams.A very successful day with Freddie and Sam respresenting the school in the ISGA pairs finals and Patience, Harriet and Freddie playing in the ISGA Junior Open next week.Mr Vibert

IAPS Triathlon

On Sunday 12 June, nine MPS Triathletes started their journey (at 06:45!) to Dulwich Prep, where they would be competing in the National IAPS Triathlon. After walking the course, numbering up and checking their bike in, Year 7 were first up. Alex P had a brilliant 200m swim, a slick transition into a solid 4km cycle and 1.8km run to take 1st place in his category in an overall time of 23 minutes 51 seconds. Storm M was on excellent form, translating a fast swim into an impressive cycle and run to finish 4th out of 45 competitors in a time of 24 minutes 32 seconds. At his first Triathlon, Harry R put in three excellent performances to finish 41st in a tough category. The Year 7 girls followed suit in this gruelling swim-cycle-run event with Lydia L finishing 2nd overall out of 19 competitors (25 minutes 39 seconds) Jasmine C in 4th (25 minutes 45 seconds), Isabella W in 5th (26 minutes 21 seconds), Eva B in 6th(28 minutes 1 second) and Heidi D in 10th (29 minutes 47 seconds). The six Year 7 girls worked brilliantly as a team and showed excellent moral support throughout the day.The final race saw Harry B battle against 28 other Year 8 pupils to finish in a solid 18th posi-tion (despite a few minor bike chain problems) in a time of 28 minutes 27 seconds. All MPS Triathletes must be congratulated on their achievements; they behaved brilliantly and made the school very proud! Thank you to Miss Vickers and Mr Evans for their help and support on the day!Miss Gunner

Team of the Week Rounders

A huge well done to the U13B/C girls Rounders team for winning Team of the Week. They worked fantastically as a team and batted very well during their match against All Hallows School. With the match evenly set after the first innings, MPS had to score 4.5 rounders in the second innings to clinch the victory. The team managed to win the match by just 1 rounder! All the girls displayed a positive attitude and good sportsmanship throughout the match.Congratulations to all the girls, but a special mention to Emily, Imogen, Nell and Ella for some fantastic play!Miss Vickers

U11 Rounders quarter finals of IAPS were drawn to a neutral ground at Bromsgrove against Witham Hall from Lincolnshire. On a very warm day, the girls started well with a very tight 1st innings score of 6.5-6. Witham Hall then found their batting form and played very well in their second innings whilst MPS girls started to melt. The girls showed real progress over this term and should be very proud to finish in the top 8 of this national competition. We wish Witham Hall luck in the semi-finals and would like to thank Mrs Morgan-Hughes for accompanying us on a long day and for umpiring.Mrs Collins

This week...The excitement is mounting as we head towards our summer production. The scenery looks amazing! Huge thanks to our great team of parent helpers who have worked so hard. Costumes have been perfected, again thanks to those who have helped with this job too. Lighting is now in place, so all we need are the children! Please return your slips to Mrs Berrow in order to book your seats for one of the two performances.New Teacher Day is Thursday 22 June. The children will all have the chance to spend the morning in their new year groups. I will be in touch very soon regarding class groupings and staffing for next year. Mrs Blasdale

Pre-SchoolIt was the turn of Pre-School to act out a story in assembly. The children reenacted ‘walking through the jungle’ for their mummies, daddies, grandparents, friends and teachers on Wednesday morning. Each child chose which animal they would like to be and made an animal headband to get into character! They enjoyed stomping, wading, swinging, flying and creeping through the jungle. It’s a big thing standing up on a stage and acting out a story when you are so small! The Pre-School teachers are very proud of all the children, and we’re sure everyone else is too. Please click on the icons above to see more photos and a film of the assembly.

The Pre-School children enjoyed snack time in the sunshine on Tuesday, let’s hope there’s more opportunity for this in the coming weeks!

Reception Journey SticksThis week the Reception children had fun at Forest School. Each child whittled a length of elder using either a penknife or potato peeler in preparation to use for their ‘journey stick’. As a group, they walked around the grounds adding leaves, flowers and feathers and secured them to their journey sticks using pipe cleaners or tape. Each item added is a reminder of where they visited.Their final destination was the duck pond where there was a surprise a basket full of sticks, and lurking beneath was thestory of the ‘Stick Man’ and somechocolate sticks which everyone enjoyed sharing together!

Reception Visit to Millfield Media DepartmentOn Tuesday, Reception went to the Millfield Media Department where Mr Bix organised an amazing animation workshop. Please click the icon above to see a video of what the children got up to during their time there.

Year 2Year 1 Visit to Gore FarmYear 1 have been off travelling again! This time they went to visit Gore Farm for a day of forest school. They learnt about the different layers in a native British woodland. They identified the woodland floor, shrub layer and canopy. They then noticed that there were twodifferent kinds of trees; evergreen and deciduous. Looking at the deciduous trees, they noticed that there were different shaped leaves on them. Using a tree identification chart they found out what the trees were.

Year 2 The Bird and the Forest Fire story Year 2 have had a busy week getting ready for the SummerPerformance. They have done extremely well learning their lines and knowing the stage directions. The children have also been learning a story called ‘The Bird and the Forest Fire’. This is an Indian fable from the Buddhist tradition, demonstrating determination and the ability to triumph againstall odds. This story also links with our work on habitats andendangered species. The children have loved learning this storyand have tried to use many of the writing skills taught throughout the year. Next week the children will be changing the story by using different locations or characters.

Minis’ Sports DayThe MINIS had a very sporty week playing in the Prep School Sports Hall and Squash Courts for our MINIS’ SPORTS DAY!There were lots of fun sporting activities for them to try including: an obstacle course, balloon tennis, noodle balloon, launching balls and beanbags, rolling giant balls down slopes and riding on balance bikes. The children had great fun trying these new activities before taking part in some short races where they had to collect shopping and then had to dress

up! Even the adults had to join in with the dressing-up race!See you all next week for our FUN IN THE FOREST. Please make sure that the children are wearing long sleeves and trousers/tights even if the weather is hot.
