Dear Parents and Tenby Community,

This week, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results were announced and we wish to congratulate our students for their excellent results. Our results were better than the year before, we achieved a better grade point average of 3.65 compared to 3.99 last year and our ranking improved from 11th to 9th in the Kinta Northern District. Well done to our students and teachers for their hard work. You will read a more detailed write up later in this newsletter.

Early Years Meru Sports DayThe Early Years Meru students had their Sports Day this morning. It was lovely to see many parents who came to watch and encourage their child to participate. Also a big thank you to those who took part in the parents’ race, you were cheered on loudly by the Early Years students!

Literacy WeekThroughout this week we had the Literacy Week in International Primary where different activities were conducted in the classrooms. Students today came dressed in their favourite story book character and the activities ended with a special Assembly in the Auditorium.

IPC Workshop for ParentsOn Wednesday due to popular demand, Andrew Hamilton and I conducted the second IPC workshop for parents for the International Primary section. The purpose of the workshop is for parents to experience how a unit in the IPC works and they were taken “back to school” to go through practical activities that their children may encounter in class. Some feedback from parents about the workshop are shared later in this newsletter. It is important for the school and students that parents take an active role in their child’s education and we thank everyone who came for their time and support.

Peter Pan ProductionThe school has been abuzz with preparations for the Peter Pan Production which will be held in the Auditorium on Wednesday 16th March and Thursday 17th March. The musical production involves a cast and crew of over 100 students and will showcase a range of talents in drama, music and dance. We hope that you will come support this musical production. Tickets are priced at RM25 per person and they are available from the office reception. Please help us spread the word out!

Carmina Burana at Dewan Filharmonic Petronas (DFP), KLCC.Our Secondary Choir will be taking part in the Tenby Schools production of Carmina Burana at the Dewan Filharmonic Petronas (DFP), KLCC on Sunday, 8th May at 18.00hrs. Parents who wish to attend may purchase tickets priced from RM55 to RM135 and can be booked and paid for through the Malaysian Philharmonic website (www.mpo.com.my) or by telephone on +603-2331 7007. Tickets can also be booked with Tenby SEP on +603 3342 1535.

PA Date Night Lastly, the PA is organising an evening of Dinner & Dance on Friday 15th April at the Ballroom in WEIL Hotel. It will be a fabulous night so please come join us. More information in their flyer later in this newsletter.

Standard 5 Assembly.

In the Sekolah Tenby’s primary assembly last Friday 26.02.2016, students of Standard 5T performed an African dance they had learnt from their music lesson. They had to listen and dance the steps according to the cues of the music. This performance although short and simple garnered cheers from the audience of students and teachers alike.

A Trip to Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah

On Tuesday 23rd February, my classmates and I went for a

school trip to Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah in Kuala Kangsar. We

were accompanied by our teachers Miss Ramani, Pn.

Norfazilatun and Mr. Teoh Wah Kin. We departed at 09:00hrs

from school.

Upon arriving at the gallery, we were welcomed warmly by

Encik Mohammad our tour guide. We were given quiz booklets

with some interesting questions to unravel during our tour of

the gallery. We were fascinated with the memorabilia of our late

Sultan Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah. He had a fair collection of

luxurious watches, priceless coins, medals and crown jewels.

It was a memorable and educational trip for us because we

learnt about the history of the Perak Monarchy. This trip has

definitely improved our knowledge in Perak’s history.

News from Tenby Early Years Centre

It’s been a busy… busy week at TEYCI, with lots of activities going on “The more that you READ, the more things you will KNOW. The more that you LEARN, the more places you’ll GO.” With

this, the Literacy Week started off with children designing their favourite story book cover as well as

making a story book of their own. There was a “Design a book mark” contest by the Nursery students

and a book walk in their favourite story book.

Author’s Chair was a hit among some parents who came to read stories to the children in the school. Their stories got the children excited and kept them engrossed to the end. It was a lovely sight watching fathers coming in to school armed with a story book to share with children. All the mums and dads were so animated and full of expression while telling their stories. The Early Years Team wishes to thank all the parents who came for Author’s Chair and making it a memorable event for our students.

Something About Year 4 Yellow….

In Numeracy, we have learnt acute, right and obtuse angles. We also learnt to identify Perpendicular and Parallel lines.

We continued on our IPC topic – Saving the World ~ Rainforests In Science Task 3, we learnt about ways in which animals and plants are suited to the different rainforest environments.

The Message We Want to Share!

The rainforests are dying and we the students of Year Four would like to

help save them. We did this by practicing and performing a dance, choral

speaking and some short speeches, all about the rainforest.

Now you must be wondering… what does dancing have to do with saving

the rainforests? Well, there is more and more deforestation. We hope that our

performance helped the students of Tenby Ipoh realize why it is important to

save the rainforests.

The performance consisted of four parts. The first part was a tribal dance by

a few students to show the colorful culture of the rainforest tribes. Then other

students performed choral speaking on how roads, mining and farming were

threatening the rainforests. This was followed by some of us giving short

speeches about rainforests around the world like the Amazon, the Congo and our

very own Kinabalu. In the finale, all the students of Year Four came together in

the closing dance.

I found working on this performance sometimes tiring, but always fun.

More importantly though, its meaning is crucial. We the children are the next

generation, and it is up to us to make a difference!

BIANNUAL SIXTH FORM LEADERSHIP TRAINING CAMP

THEME : A UNITED WORLD AT PEACE THROUGH EDUCATION

On Friday 26th February in the afternoon, 23 Sixth Form students and three teachers embarked on a 3-day

and 2- night Leadership Training Camp in the Cameron Highlands. We departed at 14:00hrs to Tanah Rata by

bus.

On the way, we dropped by Tanah Rata Road to visit the Orang Asli Settlement to carry out some Community

Service. We were welcomed with open hands. We brought along some assorted biscuits, several packets of

rice and other daily needs for them. We had a great

and amazing time with them. We interacted with the

folks and played games as well. The Chairman of the

Sixth Form, Kenneth gave the villagers a donation

which we had collected from the Cohort 13 students.

He explained “This money is donated to fund their pre-

school centre in their village. It is an investment in their

education.”

After the village, we

continued on with our

journey to Tanah Rata.

Upon reaching our hostel,

the Barre IJ Centre, we

were given a briefing on

the itinerary and also

suitable attire to be worn

when the activities were

carried out. After a

satisfying buffet dinner, it

was time to carry out our

first activity listed on the itinerary. There were ice- breaking

games and a workshop based on our school’s vision “ A

United World At Peace - through Education”. Students were

divided into groups. We discussed and shared episodes in

our lives which promoted peace.

Later, we had a barbeque supper at the gazebo. We were all

given an opportunity to interact among ourselves. It was a

cold night ; 15 degree Celcius. However, we managed to

warm ourselves when we all sat by the barbeque stove,

dancing and singing to cheer the night.

On the following morning, we had our breakfast at the

hostel. We were ushered into the main hall for our next

session, entitled “The UN Declaration On Human Rights”.

Mr Louis, our trainer, showed us some motivational videos

of female activist, Malala Yousofzai, and a Malaysian lawyer,

Ambiga, who are fighting for human rights in the world. The

purpose of this activity was to educate us on the rights that

every human being on this planet is entitled to. We

replenished our energy with a quick lunch before the next

session started. We were divided into groups again, three

by three, to carry out activities based on peace. Each group

prepared a presentation on an influential person in the

world who campaigned for peace. The posters on our work

have been e brought back to the school and are currently on

display on the bulletin board in Cohort 13 classroom.

After the session ended, we had our tea break slightly

earlier as the visit to the tea plantation had been

postponed due to the holding of the Tour de Langkawi

cycling marathon in Tanah Rata . We walked to Starbucks

which was just a stone’s throw away from our hostel.

When night came, we had another session on “ Satu

Malaysia”. Our trainer, Mr Louis instructed us to do a

forum presentation on the ways to overcome polarisation

in our country, Malaysia. We all did a great job,

emphasizing the positive factors that can unite young

Malaysians.

After that session we went for a warm and hearty

steamboat dinner in Brinchang. The food was delicious.

Later on, we shopped in a popular “pasar malam” in

town. The goods were sold at a reasonable and

affordable price. There were a variety of snacks such as

roasted corn, strawberries and not forgetting fried food.

On our final morning, we had an early breakfast and

gathered for our next challenge - hiking up Gunung Jasa.

The trail to the mountain is rather close to our hostel,

behind the Oly Apartments. Standing tall and mighty at

up to 6666ft., the mountain has a very steep uphill track.

It was difficult, but not entirely impossible because the

students were willing to support and help each other

out.

At long last, everyone including Miss Mangales made it

up to the top of the hill. The long and exhausting hike

was worthwhile when we beheld the panoramic scenery

from the top of the mountain. The scenery was

breathtaking and it was really cold and windy up there.

The two-hour journey and our hard work had paid off.

Our tour guide told us some interesting facts on the flora

and fauna along the way to the top.

We went back to the hostel and packed our luggage for

our journey back to Ipoh. On the way back to Ipoh, we

managed to visit the BOH Tea Plantation. Miss Mangales

led us to the factory and explained the entire process of

packaging the tea leaves in detail while we studied the

machines and tools used by the farmers and factory

workers. We had our tea break in a cafe at the plantation

and took many pictures to cherish the final moments of

the amazing trip.

We had an enjoyable and educational trip which

promoted the importance of teamwork, as well as helped

us develop our inner strength and confidence. We

were also able deepen the bonds of friendship with all

our friends and loving teachers.

Tenby Wins Silver in MSSPK Water Polo

Reflections by Irvin (Year 10 Blue)

On 26th , 27th and 28th February, Tenby Water Polo Team attended MSSPK in DBI and came out with second placing. On day 1, we played against MCKK and beat them 11-4. It was the first match we had won as a team. The match had been hard at the beginning when they scored first, but we managed to encourage each other and score back decisively. This win gave us the confidence to play harder and better in the coming matches.

On day 2, After MCKK we faced ACS, the reigning champion and lost 24-1. Last year we lost 51-0, a crushing defeat. We accepted that we didn't have enough experience and knowledge of the game, and decided to train even more seriously for this year. With Mr Venodh's coaching and advice, we were able to cut down their previous score by more than half, and even managed to score against the team that had not lost a point in many years.

It was frustrating to still have such a large point difference but we as a team aim to keep them on their toes next year. After that we faced Poi Lam, a relatively new team like us last year. We were evenly matched for most of the game, but managed to win by scoring more in the last quarter ending 9-7. This match should have been an easier one but we were a bit overconfident. It reminded us to be careful for our last match against SMI.

In the end, we also won against SMI. As it was our final match, the team played all out and functioned as a well-oiled cohesive unit. We were careful not to be overconfident and listened to our coach's instructions. At last we won SMI with an 8 point lead, the final score was 12-4.

Tenby won 3 matches out of 4 and successfully earned our silver medal. "Victory is more meaningful when you've known defeat."
