1 Newsletter No. 16 - Term 2 Week 7 31 May 2018 On Tuesday our Foundation students, their teachers and some brave parent-helpers embarked on our very first school excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. Some of us couldn’t sleep the night before because we were so excited about going on a bus for the first time! They had seatbelts and everything! We were met by the educator, Bec, who engaged us with a chat about Tasmanian Devils. We had fun pretending to run and growl and eat like Tasmanian Devils. We then set off on our adventure to discover how animals change and how they adapt to their environment. We met some great keepers and educators on our travels and were able to do things the general public doesn’t. Some of us got to pat a blue tongue lizard behind the scenes at the reptile house. Some of us fed a bilby. Some of us fed a red-tailed black cockatoo. We even had adventures eating our lunch. There were some very cheeky ibis who were intent on stealing our lunches. Lucky our parent helpers were so good at shepherding! One of the highlights of the day of the Spirits of the Sky bird show. We were fascinated by how different birds have adapted to survive like the buzzard using a stone to break open emu eggs and the black kite eating on the wing. We learnt that swapping to recycled toilet paper can have a big impact on saving habitat for birds and other animals. There were some very tired little Foundlings on the bus ride home and we hope they slept well that night. A very big, heartfelt thank you to all our parent helpers who helped us on the day. It would not have been a success without you and we hope you slept soundly that night too! Below are some of the children’s reflections on the day. I saw a python, blue tongue lizard and snakes. I learnt that echidnas eat ants. - Liam S I saw a kangaroo. I saw a platypus show. I saw a bird show. I learnt that koalas eat 1200 leaves a day. - Pippi I saw a platypus show and we saw the birds. I learnt about baby Tasmanian Devils, that they are little like the size of your little fingernail. - Charlotte G I saw a cuddly koala in a tree. I saw some toilet paper. - Gavin

OFFICE NEWS

GRADE 3/4 PHILLIP ISLAND CAMP - The Grade 3/4 Camp instalments are now live on Compass and open for payment and consent under Course confirmations. Instalment payments are $80 each and due on 4/6, 22/6 and 18/7. You can also pay in full at the office. The balance owing is $240. If you have CSEF please come to the office so we can adjust your balance owing. GRADE 3/4 Red Riding Robyn Hood Incursion - This event should now be showing on your child’s event tab on Compass. Please consent and pay through Compass before 22nd July. WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS – There has been some confusion recently over the requirements of Working With Children Checks. If parents, family members, or members of the community would like to volunteer their time at Kalinda Primary School (or any other school or childcare service) they will need a current Working With Children Check. The WWCC card you receive will then need to be presented to the office for copying. They will then be added to our WWCC Register. If this card is not presented, you will not be able to help out in any area of the school or on excursions outside of the school. If you would like to apply for a WWCC, this needs to be done online through: http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/ Once you have registered your card at the office you may help out in any area of the school, i.e. classroom activities, sports days, excursions, canteen, SAKG, etc. However, before you do this you must enter via the office and sign the Visitors Register and wear a Visitors badge before you proceed to the area you are visiting. If you are eligible for Camps, Sports & Excursions Funding (CSEF), please do not process through Compass, as this will alter the amount owed. Complete your excursion permission form and bring into the Office for payment. Credit Card & BPay payments – Please remember that we cannot accept payments of less than $10 for credit card and less than $30 for BPay. If you are paying by BPay, please also send in a short email or note letting us know the amount, what the payment was for and the BPay Receipt number, to [email protected] If payments of less than $10 are received, we will be returning them home and asking for cash payment. The 2017 Parent Payment Policy and the Kalinda Primary School Hardship Policy is located on our website at www.kalinda.vic.edu.au/ - Notices & Forms, for your information. . If you have any queries regarding any of the above, please contact the Office. THERESA JARVIS BUSINESS MANAGER COMPASS – If your child is away due to illness, medical appointments, family holidays, or other reasons, please remember to login to Compass and register their non-attendance through the “Add Note / Approval” tab on your child’s Home Page in Compass.

A Kalinda Mum’s experience with the Entertainment Book she has had for 4 months– Mum of 2 primary school children:-

“We purchased the Woolworths vouchers which has a 5% discount and used these to purchase fuel using our

Everyday Rewards card - we receive another 4 % discount = 9% discount (who wouldn’t want 9% discount on fuel

every time you filled up!).

We also use the vouchers to purchase groceries meaning we have a 5% discount on all groceries before we even

walk in the store. Plus discounts at Big W, Dan Murphy, Chemist Warehouse. In 4 months, by just using the

discounts, we have saved $495!

Then there are the free coffees – Coffee Club, Laurent and 2 for 1 voucher with bowling, Crocs, Roller skating,

plus discounts at Lindos, Carlos Cantina, Pancake Parlour, Mrs Fields.

We love the electronic version and it shows me that in just 4 months we have saved $177 dollars on just 8 activities.

All local activities and using everyday benefits for food and fuel means a savings in 4 months of approx. $672.

Wouldn’t be without it and love that it’s easy to use and helps my children’s school raise money.”
