Principal’s Message
Dear Parents,
NAPLAN Online 2019 Our year 3 and 5 students will be participating in the NAPLAN testing in 2019 however they will be completing the tests online. Only the Year 3 writing test will be completed as a paper test. All schools will eventually be completing the tests online, however, Samson Primary students begin NAPLAN online testing in 2019. This will mean many changes to the items in the test, schedule for the testing etc. The parent information flyer will be sent home with year 3 & 5 students soon, however it can also be found on the website link below in a link that will take parents to the latest information. https://www.education.wa.edu.au/naplan https://www.nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/naplan-online-information-brochure-for-parents-and-carers.pdf?sfvrsn=4 Testing does not begin until term 2 from 14th May. More information as it is sent to the school.
Voluntary Contributions School voluntary contributions are set in consultation with the School Council. It has been agreed that the voluntary contribution, per child, is $60.00 which will go towards the purchase of replacement library books, reading materials, computer consumables and photo copy paper. The more families who pay this voluntary contribution the more resources will be available to our students.
Class Meetings for Parents In week 4 and continuing into week 5 class teachers will be holding meetings for parents to provide information to parents about the structure of the class and important class events. A note will be sent home to parents indicating which night and time the meetings are to be held. All mainstream classes hold meetings from Year 1 to Year 6. Pre Primary classes provide activities for parents and children to engage in together. The Specialised Learning Program class teachers will hold individual meetings with parents to discuss the IEPs at a later date. Parents will be notified of class meeting dates in the next newsletter.
IT’S NOT OKAY TO STAY AWAY Research tells us that in order to progress at school students need to attend 90% of the school year. This provides continuity for learning. Children stay home if they are sick.
SMS – Absence Messages For the parents who would like to SMS
to provide a reason for your child’s
absence, the phone number is
0418 948 875.

STUDENT WORKBOOK LEVY On the booklist for each year level there is a Student Workbook Levy for various books. This charge is to purchase the books for your child’s use in the classroom. Rather than have parents purchase the books from the booklist, the amount is listed as a levy, to enable the Classroom Teacher to issue the correct level of each book specific to an individual student. Teachers have now begun using iMaths, Sound Waves and Oxfords Grammar workbooks which have only been issued to the students where the levy has been paid. If you missed the levy or were not clear on the purpose of the levy, parents can be paid at the school office and books will be issued to the children.
Staffing 2019 Claire Gardner – Deputy Principal We welcome Claire Gardner into the Deputy Principal role. As Fleur Hargreaves has started at Coogee Primary, we will be filling the role substantively once the selection process is completed. Claire comes from Coolbellup Learning Centre with great experience and I’m
sure that she will be a wonderful asset to Samson for her time in the role.
Farewell & Retirement of Marilyn Baker We say farewell and enjoy your retirement to Marilyn Baker in her role as Manager Corporate Services. Marilyn has worked in the office for 30 years and seen many students and parents through their years at Samson. Also her own children attended the school. It is with great fondness and appreciation that we wish her well in her next endeavours. Marilyn has been a fantastic advocate for the school and can take credit for the wonderful resources we have in our school. Thank you Marilyn for your 30 years of service to our school and community. The role is being advertised and will be filled substantively as soon as possible. We will have a relief Manager in the office for a few weeks before the substantive person can be appointed.
Staff Absences We have a few staff and student absences due to ill health and unforeseen circumstances. Where we have staff away due to illness or leave our focus is to keep relief staff to a minimum and attempt to put the same staff (teacher or education assistant) into the classrooms to ensure continuity of student learning.
LIFE ED VAN VISIT 2019
The van is on site from week 10 MONDAY 8th April – FRIDAY 12th April
Students from our Kindy classes to Year 6
attend sessions in the Life Ed Van.
School Development Days 2019
Schools use these days to plan and provide professional development for staff. The remaining days are listed and students do not attend school.
Term 2 Mon 29th April Term 3 Mon 22nd July
Term 4 Mon 14th October
Fri 20th December
PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG INTO THE SCHOOL GROUNDS
Dogs are not permitted on school grounds as
some students are scared of dogs and dogs can be unpredictable when
around large groups of children. We have many children who are frightened of dogs and become upset and anxious if dogs are in the school grounds before or after school. We ask that parents leave their dogs at home or in the vehicle if it is not too hot or too long to leave them.

SAMSON Primary School P&C are having a family
day and picnic on Friday 8th March after school on
the school oval. There will be free fun things for
the kids to do and a free sausage sizzle for
students. If you would like your own stall or have a
food van that you would like to set up, please let us
know so we can accommodate you! If you want to
bring a table and sell your own craft items or
second hand school uniforms let us know so we can
make a space. Bring a picnic and your family and
join us in welcoming all our new families and
welcoming our old families back to SAMSON!
UNIFORM SHOP The P&C are looking for a volunteer to take
over the uniform shop. At the moment the
uniform shop is open once a fortnight (on
school assembly days) and the day before
school starts. But these times are flexible so
if you can help but need to do it on another day
that is fine. Other duties include taking the
online orders and keeping the uniform shop
stocked. Eleanor has done a fantastic job for
many years now and will give the new person a
full hand over. Let us know if you would be
interested in getting involved. P & C AGM Meeting - Monday 1st March 7pm Staffroom CANTEEN Below is the link to take you to the quickcliq
website. Once on the website you can create
an account. Funds held on the app can be
redeemed from the company if unused. Now
with your newly created logon details get onto
the section to order either a lunch order or
use the above uniform tab to order uniforms
for your child.
