Preparations for 2019
We are currently making plans for the new school year, with
one of these being attaching teachers to year levels. As we
do each year, we will be moving some teachers around, and
where possible putting less experienced with more
experienced teachers together within year levels. Primary
school teachers are generalist teachers, meaning they are
qualified to teach at all levels of the school, and in all
specialist areas. At Kerrimuir teachers are provided with
group planning time to ensure each class is working the same
curriculum content in each classroom, whilst meeting the needs
of the cohort. I expect we should have teachers in year levels
by the end of November.
If you know your child(ren) will be moving schools later this
year or in 2019, could you please pass this information onto
the school office as soon as possible, as we can allow for this
as we begin to order student supplies for the coming year.
Best wishes

Kerrimuir Colour Run - 30th November
We are super excited to introduce a colour run to our school calendar this year.. it promises to
be a day of fun, fitness and surprises.
It also gives us the opportunity to fundraise for a robotics and coding program we are keen to
introduce to the school. Every child who fundraises over $10 receives a prize for their efforts
and helps us get closer to our goal - you do not need to fundraise to participate on the day - But to do so please log onto www.schoolfundraising.com.au - many families have already done
this and are doing an amazing job – Thank you.

Robotics Has Arrived At Kerrimuir! We are very excited to welcome the new EV3 Robots to Kerrimuir!
With the help of the School Council, we have been able to purchase a full
1:1 class set of ‘Lego Mindstorm EV3 Robots’.
The EV3 Robots will provide a boundless extension to our Digital
Technologies Curriculum, iPad and existing coding program.
Curriculum links at the core of our EV3 unit will be: coding, problem solving,
computational thinking, computer science, critical and creative thinking,
design and technology, creating digital solutions, and many more as the program develops.
About the robots
Each robot has a small computer that can be built into the Lego model. This
small computer can be coded with many different types of code - beginning
with simple directions and ranging all the way to python coding.
There are over 17 robots that can be built following Lego instructions,
however the students will be able to make their own designs and of course,
code the robots themselves, allowing for limitless designs and extensions.
Future opportunities
We are very excited about where our Robotics program can lead, as
there are competitions and even inter-school competitions that we may
be able to enter as we develop our skills.
These Robots will be introduced to our ICT curriculum in 2019 in the
senior school.
Don’t worry though middle school students, there might be another exciting
robotics announcement for you right around the corner with our upcoming colour run!
A huge thank you to School Council for being so supportive and
allowing us to kick start the robotics program at Kerrimuir!

What’s going on in the garden?
Have you noticed that the garden has been looking
particularly fresh and beautiful this year? Well, that’s
because this year’s garden captain - Jessie, has been
taking good care of the KPS garden. Here are some
pictures of how it is growing:
Prices of plants :
Small Plants - $3 to $7
Large plants - $9 to $15
Silverbeet - $4 for 6
Thyme cuttings - $1.50 for 3
Rosemary - $2 for 6
Bay leaves - $3 for 20
Lettuce - $3 a bunch
Fun Facts :
Jessie’s favourite plant
is the nectarine
A sunflower takes 4
weeks to grow
If you want to help Jessie with the garden, you can go
to help him on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at
recess.
If you wish to buy any of the garden’s beautiful plants,
you may come to the Friday Stall, which is before
assembly.
The money goes to new equipment for the garden. This
helps to make the garden even more beautiful.
The garden is always in need of more plants and
equipment too, so any donations are greatly
appreciated.

What is your style of parenting?
Parents are the most important influence in children’s lives. The parent-child relationship would impact a child in many aspects, including but not limited to emotion regulation (i.e. the way they regulate and express their big emotions), attachment style and relationship formation, self-concept, and personality. Understanding more about parenting styles and how they affect children can help you work out the kind of parent you want to be. Although every parent has a unique way or philosophy in raising their children, psychologists concluded four broad parenting styles. Parents might use a mix of these but
tend to use one the most.
Authoritarian style
Focused on obedience while communication is mostly one way. Tend to
tell children what to do and expect them to obey without explanation.
Focused on punishment over discipline. Can be controlling and lack
warmth.
Set high and rigid expectations.
Children raised this way are obedient. But they are likely to have lower self-esteem. They might depend on others to make decisions and be less likely to take responsibilities or solve problems. They might become defiant or aggressive as they grow
older (especially in adolescence).
Permissive (a.k.a. indulgent) style
Provide very little or no discipline or guidance. Let the
children do what they want, believing that “kids will be kids”.
Communication is open but tend to let children decide for
themselves rather than giving direction.
Warm and nurturing. Act more like a friend than a parent.
Set minimal expectations of children.
Children might grow up feeling loved but insecure due to the lack of boundaries. They might lack self-discipline, have poorer social skills (e.g. being bossy, dependent, impulsive), lower academic
achievement and emotional control, and be too self-involved.
SCHOOL News
Uninvolved (a.k.a. disengaged) style
Don’t utilise any particular style.
Provide little or no guidance, attention and nurturing to children due to the lack of
interest in being a parent.
Limited communication and excessive amount of
freedom.
Set few or no expectations.
Children are less likely to feel loved. They might experience attention problems and social withdrawal. They are more likely to exhibit externalising (e.g. aggressive and/or
delinquent) behaviours in adolescence.
Authoritative (a.k.a. supportive) style
Calm, reasonable, predictable and nurturing.
Set clear rules and explain the reason behind them.
Frequent and open communication with children.
Set high but clear expectations.
This parenting style is thought to be the most effective style, despite the fact that it is the most demanding in terms of parental investment (i.e. energy and time). Children raised this way tend to have higher self-control, self-esteem and assertiveness. They might display
high levels of moral reasoning and prosocial behaviours.

Hooptime Regional Finals

Charlie, Lucas, Archie P, Will, Emily, Olive, Josh, Lucy J &
Nyaweu at the Regional Hooptime Finals.
Congratulations to Charlie, Lucas, Archie P, Will, Emily, Olive, Josh, Lucy J & Nyaweu
who made up our Grade 3 & 4 Hooptime team - The Kerrimuir Kings. They came up
against some tough competition, and finished the first round of games with 2 wins and 1
loss. This meant they qualified for 1 of the finals!
The Grand final was a nail-bitter with the scores level at full time. They went into 3 minutes
of extra time during which both teams scored another goal. The scores were still even! This
meant they had to go into ‘Golden Goal’ or ‘Sudden Death’.
Unfortunately the other team got a fast break and put away a basket for the win.
Special thanks to Sue Clarkson for transport & Jacqui Steffen for Coaching, and
transporting the students to the event!
Congratulations on a super effort!
Mr Chaffer.

Do you want a KPS Fair
in 2019?
If the answer is YES come along and get the ball
rolling at our
Wine, Cheese and Ideas Night
Tuesday 13th November, 7.30pm, in the Staff room
The KPS Fair has been a wonderful school event held every second year for many
years at Kerrimuir. The kids have a fantastic time and it is also a great event for
raising money to contribute to school improvements.
But Fairs take a lot of time, effort and good will to organise, and can only
happen if we have the support of the school community.
So please come along on Tuesday 13th November to share your ideas (and
some wine and cheese!) and show your support for a 2019 KPS Fair.
From this night we hope to:
Find out if there is enough demonstrated interest
and support from school families to commit to
having a Fair in 2019
Get some fresh ideas for what a 2019 might
look like
Understand the skills, interests and availability of
potential contributors (this might be as simple as
sharing some useful contacts or an interest in
helping with an activity on the day)
Recruit a committee of management to share in
the fun of organising a Fair in 2019.
We look forward to seeing you there!
