We’ve reached the end of what has been an really industrious week, with a palpable ‘buzz’ in the air. The quality and range of work I have seen has been truly amazing. Children have expressed their individuality and creativity in so many different art forms :dance, drama, film, photography, painting, printing, sculpture, collage, crayons, DT, music, too much to describe in this newsletter! They have worked individually and collaboratively, they have analysed, researched and reflected, they have experimented, tried new things and persevered. I visited Year 6 classes this morning to see their self-portraits; having studied the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, they were focussed on showing light and dark in their paintings; the children were engrossed in their work, they admitted it was really difficult but enjoyed the challenge, the standard of work was outstanding. What has struck me as I reflect on the week is how Arts Week has enabled children to immerse themselves in creativity, to really study an aspect of art in depth and to explore such a range of art forms. When you come into parents consultations next week, please visit all the corridors to see some of the children’s work. You are also welcome to join us for our Assembly on Friday 4 th April at 10:45 when we will show a film about Arts Week, then for refreshments afterwards. Art Week at BISB1B

Children in 1B learned about the life and work of two artists, Georgia O’Keeffe and Antoni Gaudi. They made mosaics and designed houses in the style of Antoni Gaudi. They also painted flowers with bright, bold colours in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe.

2BOne of the artists 2C has been learning about this week is Martin Benka. He is a Slovak artist who liked to draw the mountains and farms in the countryside. We explored colour mixing, and then concentrated on mixing a range of different shades. We looked at several of his pictures and tried to continue them. We had to look carefully at the colours he used and tried hard to recreate the right shades. There is a display of our wonderful work outside our classroom. Please come and look at it!

3C3C were inspired by British artist David Hockney’s photography of people and pools! The children took photos of their models in interesting poses and used Hockney’s creative photo collage technique to recreate the scene. We also used water colour and oil pastels to show movement in our Hockney inspired swimming pool.

6AIn 6A the children studied Rembrandt and Banksy and produced self portraits in the style of both artists.

6A6A were praised by the dance teachers at River Park Dance studio for their great concentration and natural ability on the dance floor. All the children learn a fantastic dance routine so if you see them around school ask them to teach you a few moves!

4CWe have been doing INTUATIVE DRAWINGS of home based on the work of Joan Miro, turning the pictures into 3D SCULPTURE. We have then taken the 3D Sculpture and turned it into KENETIC ART MOBILES as well as doing clay, dance and drama workshops.

1AThis week in 1A we have been

learning all about the botanical

artist Margaret Mee and the

architect Antoni Gaudi. At the start

of the week we created sketches

of flowers in the same style as

Margaret Mee. Then we made

mosaics inspired by Antoni Gaudi.

We have all been working together

to make a large Antoni Gaudi

inspired house. We loved going

to the Riverpark dance studio and

we were so enthusiastic about

dancing. Already in 1A we can’t

wait to have Arts week again.

Nursery Polar BearsWe are very happy that nursery children have been enjoying our half term topic ‘Bears’. This week we have learning about polar bears and that is why we made this Wednesday (26th March ) into a ‘Polar Bear Day’. The children came dressed in white on that day, made some lovely masks, played some bear games and enjoyed eating real polar bear cupcakes.

Year 4 Trip to the Zoya GalleryLast week Year 4 were lucky enough to go on a trip to the Zoya Gallery in Bratislava Old Town to explore the Art of Slovak Modern Style (1890-1949). We really enjoyed the guided tour from Mrs Ledecka who taught us about the motifs, colours and details in the collection of Slovak Art. Year 4 all did some preparatory sketches for a painting they are going to do at school in response to the collection. Excitingly Mrs Ledecka has also said we might get to exibit our work at the gallery. Watch this space!

BISB Walking Club – Castles of Borinka Our next walk is a circular route starting and finishing at the pretty village of Borinka. We will take a circular route to Draci Hradok, the mysterious ‘Dragon’s Castle’ and then on to the better known Pajstun Castle, a beautiful ruin with magnificent views. Once again, all are welcome to join us. This is a club for parents, children and staff to enjoy together and parents will be responsible for their children at all times.Borinka – Draci Hradok - Pajstun Castle – Borinka • Saturday 29th March 2014• The Slovak Lines Bus leaves Bratislava Bus Station at 08:40 / Patronka at 08:55 / arriving Borinka at 09:30. • Alternatively, those travelling by car can meet at Borinka village, opposite the church, at 09.30. • This is a circular walk. 3A Story3A really enjoyed getting together with 2B to share the amazing non-fiction books that year 2 have been reading. We looked carefully at the features of the non-fiction texts before 3A wrote helpful advice notes to 2B to help make their writing even better!

Year 3 have been looking at Language play within poems for the last couple of weeks. 3A used the poem “The Sound Collector” to write their own fabulous versions. Here are a couple of examples. Can you spot the onomatopoeia?

page 4

The Sound Collector

A stranger called this eveningDressed all in black and greyPut every sound into a bag

And carried them away.

The splash of the surf,The bubbling of the water,The clapping of the crab,

The crying of the daughter.

The splashing of my baby brother,The setting of the sun,

The chattering of my dad While my older brother is having

fun.

The tapping of the computer,The barking of the dog,The whistling the tea,

The croaking of the frog.

The pouring of the water,The ringing of the phone,The rustling of the book

As someone reads alone.

A stranger called this eveningHe didn’t leave his name

Left us only silenceLife will never be the same.

The Sound Collector

A stranger called this eveningDressed all in black and greyPut every sound into a bag

And carried them away.

The chatting of the mumsThe barking of the dog

The music of the runnersWhile they’re out for their jog

The squeaking of the squirrelsThe whispering of the treesThe shouting of the children

As they run through the breeze

The swishing of the flowersThe yawning of the foxThe falling of the log

The music which really rocks

A stranger called this eveningHe didn’t leave his name

8th Bavaria Cup Cricket TournamentOn Friday 14th March, 22 members of the Cricket Club headed west to Munich to play in the annual Bavaria Cup. Upon arrival at the illustrious, un-forgettable Pension Beck, the students whose ages ranged from 8 to 13, decamped, prepared their kit for the following day, and set off into Munich for a whole team meal. The following day, Mr Williamson led his older, intermediate team off to a venue in southern Munich, using the S-Bahn as means of transport. The younger children were divided into 3 teams, naming themselves the Buffaloes, Lions and Cheetahs. They were then taken by bus to the northern outskirts of the city to play their matches, competing against 8 other teams from as far afield as Berlin and Vienna. The Cheetahs and Buffaloes won all their matches on the first day although the Lions played valiantly against tougher opposition, coming second in each of their matches. At the end of play on Sunday, the Buffaloes claimed first position with the Cheetahs and Lions coming in fourth and 6th respectively.More importantly, it was noted by the organisers that all our children played ‘skilfully and ‘intelligently’. Added to this, their enthusiasm, social interac-tion and team spirit made them a credit to our school and a pleasure to be with.Once again a big thank you to Ms Jardine and Mr Williamson whose continued support allow us to travel to such international events.
