Industrial Visit

13th

October 2017

An industrial visit to M/s ACE Designers, Peenya, Bengaluru

was arranged for students of 3rd

semester ‘B’ section of

Mechanical Engineering branch on 13th

October 2017.

Ace Designers is one of India’s largest machine tool

manufacturing companies. Its manufacturing plants

producing CNC turning centres located in Bangalore, India,

are equipped with state of the art technology to deliver

large scale high quality products.

A total of 37 students and two faculty members visited two

manufacturing shop floors and one assembly plant

involving sheet metal and welding processes of the CNC

machine parts, manufacturing of high precision

components pertaining to the CNC machine, demonstration

of assembly of Vertical turning centre and Jig boring

machines.

A Guest Lecture Mr. Chandramouli N., Director, Bangalore

Aerospace Consultancy, Bengaluru, on the topic “Customer

centric problem solving skills for Entrepreneurs” was

arranged on 24th

October 2017 at 11.15 A.M to 12.45 P.M.

in Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall, BMSCE. It was the

108th

lecture in the Extension Lecture Series. The event was

organized by the Mechanical Engineering Association

(MEA).

Mr. Chandramouli spoke about the fundamentals and

issues related to management and entrepreneurship with

respect to the current industry scenario along with few live

case studies on startups. He also spoke about smart

manufacturing solutions, Aerospace manufacturing,

differences between costumers and consumers etc. He

stressed upon the quality practices, their importance and

requirement in current industrial scenarios, Key success

factors and Challenges for scaling up of business.

The talk was attended by about 120 students of UG and PG

along with the faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

Industrial Visit

25th

October 2017

Visit to CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories’ three-day

exhibition, conducted as part of CSIR-Platinum Jubilee year,

was arranged by the department to students of III semester

B.E. (120 students) and I semester M.Tech. (35 students) on

25th

October 2017. Five faculty members (Smt. Rashmi R.,

Sri. Suhas B. G., Sri. Narendra Babu N., Sri. Shashiraj, and

Dr. Shivashankar R Srivatsa) facilitated the visit.

The three-day exhibition open for students, parents,

teachers, professors, farmers, business persons,

Industrialists, Lawyers, Lawmakers, Administrators and

General public showcased and highlighted the CSIR

contributions to the Nation for the last 75 years. It included

Science exhibits and posters, Live science experience, Live

scientific demos, Technology demonstrations, Popular

science lecture and Interactions with scientists in different

areas such as Water, Food & Nutrition, Leather, Human

Resources & IP, Ecology & Environment, Skill development,

Mining, Minerals & Materials, Healthcare & Genetics,

Engineering & Infrastructure, CSIR rural development,

Chemical & petrochemicals, Aerospace & Strategic sector,

Agriculture & Floriculture, Energy, etc.

A guest lecture on ‘Entrepreneurship – Dream, Build and

Accomplish’ was delivered by Mr. B. Bhagvan, a First

Generation Entrepreneur & Industry expert, Bengaluru on

Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE in

coordination with Mechanical Engineering Association

(MEA) as a part of orientation program to the engineering

students of 3rd

semester for the academic year 2017-18.

More than 200 students and Faculties of Mechanical

Engineering attended the event.

2017, the technical fest of BMSCE. The events were

Teacher’s Day 2017 event held on 22.09.2017. The

Employees of BMS institutions, who have completed 25

years of service in the BMS Institution, around 200

belonging to BMS College of Engineering, BMS Evening

College of Engineering, BMS College for Women & BMS

Educational Trust Hostel were felicitated during the

An Industrial Visit to Composites Division, Hindustan

Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bengaluru, was arranged for

students of V semester on Monday, 25.09.2017 from 11:00

pm. The visits covered the manufacturing and fabrication

facilities of Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and Light

Short Term Training Program – AFEMA-2017

A Two-week Short Term Training Programme on Advances in

Finite Element Methods and Applications was organized by

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Civil Engg

and EEE in association with ISTE-BMSCE Chapter, between 17th

to

28th

July 2017.

The training programme comprised of 18 lecture sessions, 6

laboratory sessions, 10 sessions on demonstration of capabilities

of leading commercial packages, and one day industrial visit. The

experts were from academia (IISc, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Delhi, CME-

Pune), faculty from BMSCE and 9 practicing professionals from

Industries (NAL, Altair, CoreEl Technologies, ANSYS and COMSOL).

The number of registered participants benefited by the

programme are 95, all of them being teaching faculty from

colleges across Karnataka with specializations in CV, ME, EEE, EC,

Maths and allied branches.

An Intensive Internship training on “3D Experience” was

held at Product Design Lab at Department of Mechanical

Engineering, BMSCE, for students of Mechanical

Engineering and Professors during 1st

June to 22nd

June

2017. A total of 22 members (5 final year students, 10 pre-

final year students, 6 faculties and 1 instructor) were

trained from Dassault Systemes on their cutitng edge

technology “3D Experience” to bridge the gap between

academia and industry. The training included self-paced

learning, continuous industry interaction and support from

experts of Dassault Systemes and 3D PLM India. This

industry internship made the best use of most of virtual

tools, modern tools, high end infrastructure and support

from staff and industry colleagues in making students learn

to solve complex problems of industries.

Peer Learning Experience programme

Five Professors from Department of Mechanical

Engineering, BMSCE, have been identified by Dassault

Systemes, France, to represent India with few others from

the country for the PLEX programme.

An Industrial visit to M/s Volvo India Pvt. Ltd., Hosakote, was arranged by Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE on 5th May 2017 from 3-5 pm. The visit was arranged for Post-graduate students of the department.

This campus of Volvo industry specializes in assembly of tippers and buses. The students were guided to the assembly stations and semi-automated assembly line. They also visited quality control and testing facilities. 25

PG students and two faculty coordinators attended this visit.

Guest Lecture

13th April 2017

Mr. R. Gopal, Foundry Consultant delivered a guest lecture on

“Foundry for Automobile Engineering” on 13.04.2017 held in

Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall. The event was

organized by the Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA).

Mr. R. Gopal, a well-known name in the field of foundry

technology who has worked in various industries in the past

few decades. In the talk, which lasted for about one and half

hours, he briefed about the fundamentals of foundry

technology and related applications. He also spoke about the

different foundry processes, their applications as applied to

mechanical engineering. He stressed upon the quality

practices, their importance and requirement in current

industrial scenarios. In total, the session covered practical

aspects of foundry technology.

The talk was attended by about 80 students of UG and PG

along with the faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

Guest Lecture

27th April 2017

Mr. V. Aswatha Ramaiah, Managing Director, Unique

Consultants, delivered guest lecture on “Motivation to young

Engineers: Formula to Success” on 27th April 2017 at 11:00

am in BMS Auditorium, Library Block, BMSCE. The expert

lecture was organized by MEA on the occasion of MEA Day.

Mr. V. Aswatha Ramaiah, a BMSCE Alumni of 1971 batch of

Mechanical Engineering is an expert and trainer on personality

development. Mr. Aswatha Ramaiah has worked more than 20

years in industry and has trained lacs of people in this domain.

The talk was organized with the focus to understand and

practice the values or ingredients that are required to become a

successful person in life. The speaker covered the various

aspects of personality development and empowering human

values. A total of around 150 students from both UG and PG

programs and staff of Mechanical Engineering department

attended the program and were motivated by the speech.

Industrial Visit

22nd April 2017

Industrial Visit was arranged by Department of Mechanical

Engineering to M/s Bharat Fritz Werner Limited, Off Tumkur

Road, Bengaluru, on 22.04.2017. The industrial facility was

visited by 18 students of M.Tech. (Machine Design) along with

two faculty coordinators, Dr. J. Sharana Basavaraja, PG

Coordinator, and Dr. Shivashankar R. Srivatsa from 10.30 a.m.

to 1.00 p.m.

Bharat Fritz Werner Ltd. (BFW) is a leading manufacturer of

Machine Tools in India. BFW manufactures machines that

help build other machines. BFW is a manufacturing solutions

company that produce CNC controlled vertical machining

centers (VMC), horizontal machining centers (HMC), lathes,

horizontal turning centers (HTC) and special purpose

machines (SPM) that are customized for mass production.

The students and faculty were provided opportunity to visit

manufacturing facilities of VMC, HMC, HTC and SPMs. The

functioning of mother machines used to manufacture the

machine tools was demonstrated. Use of automatic turrets,

tool magazines on the machine tools, working of heavy -duty

machines, testing standards and best industrial practices were

observed. Production, assembly lines for the machine tool

building, operation and maintenance facilities were visited.

Brief information on the research and development activities

of BFW was shared by the skill development center. The

faculty and students had opportunity to interact with few field

engineers and managers.

MEA Day

MEA Day was celebrated on 27th April 2017 at 10.15 A.M. in

BMS Auditorium. The event was organized by the Mechanical

Engineering Association (MEA). The Program was

inaugurated by Chief Guest Sri. V. Aswatha Ramaiah, MD-

Unique Consultants, Dr. K. Mallikharjuna Babu, Principal, Dr.

B. V. Ravishankar, Vice Principal, Dr. L. Ravikumar, HOD,

Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, and Dr. S. Srinivas. Chief

As a part of MEA day, held on 27th April 2017, Undergraduate

and Post-graduate students of mechanical engineering

department along with teaching and non-teaching staffs

participated in the different events of the cultural programme.

On stage events such as Songs, Bharatanatyam, Comedy skits,

Drama, etc. were eye-catching and appreciated by the

audience. Recreational activities / competitions for staffs of

the department were held a day before. Many teaching and

non-teaching staff actively participated in these events.

The Event was organized by Mechanical Engineering

Association of the Department.

It was organized with the focus to transfer the knowledge on

challenges, responsibilities and opportunities in digital

infrastructure development in the state to the post graduate students

of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE. A total of around 30 students

from II and IV semester PG programs - Machine Design &

Manufacturing Science and Engineering and staffs of Mechanical

Engineering have attended the lecture and gained information on

the requirements and opportunities in infrastructure development in

Karnataka.

The lecture was well organized with the start from the need of

knowledge on infrastructure development. The speaker covered the

different aspects of digital infrastructure development, green

building and sustainability. At the end it was a fruitful session for

the budding engineers of BMSCE.

IISc Open Day is an event when the Institute opens its door for

general public to visit, learn, question and understand various

technological projects and research that is going on. DESE

(formerly known as CEDT) gladly invites students, professors,

lecturers from various academic institutions and professionals from

the Industry, Thousands of people made a beeline for the

laboratories on the sprawling campus while research assistants and

students explain the science.

Students of 4th, 6th and 8th Semester Mechanical Engineering,

BMSCE visited the institute on IISc Open day – 2017 to know the

various interesting research works going on at IISc, and had an

opportunity to see and understand complex machines and other

science models. People enjoyed lectures delivered by the experts

on many interesting subjects.

Students visited many labs such as combustion and gasifier,

biomass gasification, Wind tunnel (largest in Asia), Hypersonic

lab, Nano technology lab, Supercomputer building, Department of

physics, propulsion lab, Cryogenics lab etc. and were exposed to

the different aspects and areas of research, real time projects etc.

They carefully observed the experimental setups, procedures,

results/reports of different labs curiously and interacted with

respective scientist coordinators enthusiastically.

have guided the students in this project work. The project

(Retd.), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, delivered

Extension Lecture Series - 100 on 4th February 2017 on

the topic “Importance of GD & T in Industrial drawings”

at Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall, Workshop

Complex between 11.00 am to 01:00 pm. The event was


(MEA). The talk was attended by about 80 students of

fourth semester and faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

In the talk, which lasted for about one and half hours, Mr.

Satyanarayana briefed about the fundamentals of

mechanical engineering, industrial practices, related

applications. He also spoke about the construction and

working of gas turbines, dimensioning practices, limits,

fits etc as applied to design and production. He stressed

upon the quality practices, their importance and

requirement in current industrial scenarios. He also

spoke about the ethical issues and manpower

management in general. Prof. Devaraj K handed over the

token of gratitude (honorarium) to Mr. P. Satyanarayana.

Technical Staff Training Program

16th to 18th February 2017

A Three-day Technical Staff Training Program (TSTP) on

“Advanced Manufacturing and Material

Characterization” was organized by Department of

Mechanical Engineering under the aegis of Centre of

Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing Research (TEQIP

1.2.1) from 16th – 18th February 2017 in Mechanical

Engineering Seminar Hall.

The program was inaugurated by Dr. K. Mallikharjuna

Babu Principal, Guest of honour, Dr. B V Ravishankar,

Vice Principal, Dr. L. Ravikumar, HOD, Dept. of

Mechanical Engineering, Dr. M. Ramachandra, Professor

and COE Coordinator, Dr. S. Srinivas, Program Chief

Coordinator and Dr. Bheemsha, Coordinator.

Day 1: Theoretical sessions were given to participants by

Mr. Prabhaswamy N R on Abrasive waterjet cutting, Mr.

Ugrasen on Wire cut EDM and Dr. M Ramachandra on

XRD.

Day 2 :Theoretical sessions were given to participants by

Mr. Dilip Maruthi on SEM, Mr. R N Ravikumar, and Mr.

Sreekanth N V on Digital and Additive Manufacturing.

The participants were divided into four groups and

hands on training was given to participant in the

afternoon session.

Day 3: Hands on training were given to participant in

three sessions. The training sessions were given on

Waterjet cutting, Wire cut EDM, XRD, SEM and additive

Manufacturing. A written test was conducted to evaluate

the participants.

The program was concluded with the valedictory

function held at 12.30 P.M. on 18 February 2017. The

function was presided by Dr. B V Ravishankar, Vice

Principal, Dr. Bheemsha In-charge HOD, Dept. of

Mechanical Engineering, Dr. M. Ramachandra, COE

Coordinator, Centre of Excellence and Dr. S. Srinivas

Program Chief Coordinator. Participants shared their

feedback about the program. The certificates to all the

participants were distributed. Three best participants

were felicitated.

A Two-day Awareness Programme on NABL

Accreditation was organized by the Department of

Mechanical Engineering on 6th

and 7th

January 2017.

The expert speaker of the training programme was Mr.

S. S. Avadhani, Scientist-E, Central Manufacturing

Technology Institute, Bangalore. The event had

participation by all the departments of the college

under the aegis of the respective Heads of the

Departments.

The major concerns of NABL accreditation viz. Quality

Assurance, Management Systems, Traceability,

Measurement of Uncertainty, Tolerancing, Sampling,

etc. were addressed during the programme to initiate

the process of Accreditation in the laboratories of the

departments.

The topics discussed included current trends and

related applications, principle of interdisciplinary

approach or integration required, current industrial

scenarios and future requirements.

He also spoke about how the basic knowledge of

Mechanical engineering and Mechatronics can be

turned into a positive, fruitful and even an enjoyable

industrial career.

The talk was attended by about 80 students of sixth

semester and faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

students from B.E accompanied by two faculty

members of the department.

Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association

(IMTMA) is organizing the 18th

edition of IMTEX 2017

and 19th

edition of concurrent Tooltech 2017 from 26th

January 2017 to 1st February 2017 at the Bangalore

International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bengaluru.

Industries showcased their innovations in 6 halls

covering a gross area of 66,000 sq.m. . Manufacturers,

suppliers, visitors, researchers and delegations from as

many as 22 countries were participated.

Students visited different stalls related to Machine tool

accessories, metrology and CAD/CAM cutting tools,

tooling systems and current trends in the tooling

industry. They also exposed to Tooltech manifests

recent innovations in technology, design and product

development to achieve competitiveness and

excellence in the machine tool industry.

The industrial visit to IMTEX was an enriching

experience for students in getting live exposure of

metal cutting and machine tools which definitely

helped them in appreciating the theoretical concepts

they learnt in their academics and for further career

enhancements in mechanical engineering.
