We could use your help if you are free! In return, you get to spend some quality time on the beautiful mountain with really cool people. Chef Zach is planning on bringing up his smoker again, so there will be some awesome barbeque at the finish line too.

Let me know if you're willing to help out (again) and if you have friends who are interested too, send them my way! Thanks! Margaret Gordon

CHANGES TO THE ARR BOARDNew Membership CoordinatorAfter many years serving as ARR Membership Coordinator and board member, Anna Williamson has decided to step down. She has held this position while also being a working lady and, last season, president of her choir. So yes, Anna, it's time for you to relax a little! Thank you for your great service to the club - we know we'll still see you at meetings, volunteering at races, and out and about on the roads and trails. Dennis Muirhead has taken on the job of maintaining the database, so he will be the one letting you know when your membership is about to expire! If you have any questions about the status of your membership, please contact him at [email protected].

New TreasurerAfter serving as ARR Treasurer for several years, Joyce Fafard has turned over the club finances to David Kaufman as she deals with personal issues. David will complete Joyce’s term, and we welcome him to the Board of Directors. Our thanks to both Joyce and David for their service to the club.

At-Large Directorship ExchangeExciting work ahead for Stephen Jett! He has accepted a Science & Technology Policy Fellowship with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) at the National Cancer Institute. Steve's one-year assignment begins mid-August and he will be based in DC, but he will remain on the ARR Board, swapping "voting privileges" with At-Large Director Jim Schnitzler. Congratulations and best of luck to Steve as he explores best ways to apply data generated in labs and clinics to help advance the fight against cancer.

Another successful year of this long-running 10 week training program originated by Victor and Kenalee Nemudrov, then taken on by Martha and Don Porter and others, and last year by Jane Cudney-Black. We were delighted that Jane was back again for another outstanding year! This year’s sessions started on May 1 and culminated in Women’s Distance Festival 5K on July 9. The program included three meetings per week – Monday and Thursday evenings + Saturday mornings; clinics at Bosque Running Shop and Heart & Sole Sports, yoga in the park, mobility exercises, and a nutrition clinic … and the final celebration: the WIT Banquet at Ponderosa Brewery on Monday, July 17!

FROM THE RRCA WEBSITE:Albuquerque’s urban infrastructure improvements have produced over 140-miles of paved pedestrian/bicycle trails separate from roadways. The city also has over 100-miles of unpaved, natural-surface trails in the city’s open spaces and more in the Cibola National Forest and Petroglyphs National Monument. Throughout the metropolitan area, there are over a dozen pedestrian/bike bridges that cross over major interstates and underpasses below major roadways, which keep runners and trail users away from cars and trucks.

The Albuquerque Road Runners (ARR), who submitted the Runner Friendly Community application, is the largest running club in the city. The ARR organizes a number of races, hosts the Women’s Distance Festival training program, and raises money to support school-based running groups, including Running 505. The club has adopted two local trails, the unpaved La Luz trail and a paved trail section on the city’s west side. ARR organizes trash clean up and brush trimming work on these trails.

“The City has been working with community leaders and citizen groups to provide activities that support the running community,” said Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry in his letter of recommendation. “As a runner myself I see the value in running as a lifelong commitment to health and vitality.”

Community leaders providing support and letters of recommendation include: Richard J. Berry, Mayor of Albuquerque; Jason Coffey, Trails Planner - City of Albuquerque; Ian Maddieson, Albuquerque Road Runners Board Member; Tico Navarro, Race Director, Duke City Marathon.

Last year, Albuquerque was named a RUNNER FRIENDLY COMMUNITY by our parent organization, Road Runners Club of America, thanks to the application submitted by Ian Maddieson, an ARR Director-at-Large. Since that time, we have been trying to get the official plaque into the hands of Mayor Richard Berry.

After delays, postponements, and a presentation-that-almost-was at our July monthly Club meeting... FINALLY – SUCCESS! It happened on August 1, at a city ceremony to dedicate a bridge linking trail sections in the Bosque. Ian did an excellent job of describing the significance of this designation from RRCA, and Mayor Berry, as a runner and a city official, expressed his appreciation for the award and for Ian’s efforts on behalf of Albuquerque. And we also say...thank you, Ian!

unfortunately the plaque was not in attendance!Club meeting July 5, 2017

Looking for an exotic opportunity?

ADVENTUROUS RUNNERS WANTED– from Lisa Spader

We are recruiting one or two runners to join a small work team heading to Kenya in early October.

Kenyans have made an international name for themselves as some of the best long-distance runners in the world. Most of these Kenyans come from one tribe – the Kalenjin in Kenya’s Rift Valley (mprnews.org/story/npr/241895965). Despite their international fame, most Kalenjin live in subsistence villages where life is terribly difficult. We want to help the Kalenjin capitalize on their running success and bring greater economic opportunities to their communities by starting a Kalenjin Running Camp for running tourists – each participant being assigned their own Kalenjin coach. Running training will be combined with cultural activities to make this a top Bucket List item for runners. We have a small team assembled to work on the cultural activities and marketing, but, aside from our team head and host, Kalenjin Abraham Kosgei, we are lacking runners!

We are looking for someone who: • Is an avid mid- or long-distance runner (speed and talent

not required, but a love for running is) • Has a low-key, flexible personality with a sense of

adventure (this is a work trip in a developing country, not a pampered tourist trip) • Has a compassionate heart and a desire to make a

positive impact among the Kalenjin • Can spend the first two weeks of October in Kenya

This person/s would be responsible for evaluating potential training routes and developing three levels of training goals. Each team member is responsible for his/her costs, which primarily will be the roundtrip flightto Nairobi and transportation within Kenya (we will rent a van and team members will split the cost equally). Villagers will host us, so, aside from a hotel room in Nairobi as we arrive and depart, our other costs in Kenya will be minimal.

Other team members include:• an engineer who is helping with a water project (we need to bring running water to the village before tourists arrive for the running camp),• one of the co-founders of Crooked Trails (crookedtrails.org), a travel organization that uses tourism to benefit local communities,• the President of Global Pearls (globalpearls.org), an international development organization that empowers locals to address needs in their communities,• Abraham Kosgei, a Kalenjin runner and our host, who developed and runs the Santa Fe Thunder Half-Marathon (santafethunder.com)
