Message from the President Greetings to our supporters and well-wishers. The Bagishu from Mt. Elgon in Uganda wish you good health and a peaceful New Year. These good tidings reflect many changed lives because of your assistance. Thanks to the Unitarian Universalist Church in Williamsville, NY, Joseph Community School now has 25 new desks and three chalkboards, our volunteer teachers

received stipends, and single mom Robinah Nasiira is studying Food Nutrition at Benedict Agricultural College in Tororo, Uganda. A donation from Stephanie Olsen of Penn Yan, NY, paid for feminine hygiene products so girls can attend school all month. Dedi-cated supporters from the Kiwanis Club of Clinton, NY, are helping Boniface Namukowa study medical technology in Kampala. Sandy Warner’s donation bought seedlings to help reduce landslide destruction. These are just some of the improvements that you have made possible for the Bagishu people, who are so thankful. Invite your friends to join us, and consider increasing your contribution. Finally, on behalf of our

dedicated volunteers, consider volunteering. All these projects have significantly increased the workload on the three of us who run Global African as volunteers. Be blessed with good health in 2015.

In Memoriam Donation We are pleased to announce that Global African Village has received an important

donation. A generous supporter who wishes to remain anonymous recently received an inheritance. In the memory of this loved one, the donation is helping Beatrice Masibo expand her small bakery business in Kampala, Uganda, by hiring an assistant; helping college student Fred Nashawo, who is from a poor family, continue his education at Uganda Christian University in Mbale; providing staff training for the 12 teachers at Joseph Community School; providing corn meal for lunches for the 300 children who attend the school; repairing the roof and walls of the school; and paying a local carpenter to build addi-tional bookshelves for the school.

We are deeply grateful for this donation. Please remember Global African Village when you do estate planning.

Beatrice Masibo’s Baking Business

One donor’s generosity has helped Beatrice

Masibo expand her baking business,

“Splendor of the King.” Beatrice, a single

mom to five-year-old Elijah, also helps care

for her eight siblings. Her business, which

she started in 2008, is just two small rooms:

one for baking, the other an office. She

makes deliveries by taxi or bus, but she

hopes to earn enough money to someday

buy a delivery van. This recent donation

enabled Beatrice to hire a girl as an assistant

and buy a small hand mixer. In the past, she

trained two other young women, Sarah and

Zarida, who then started their own small

businesses.

S.H.E. Continues to Empower Women

Self-Help Enterprises (or S.H.E.) is a group of

women who are learning to sew, knit, and

crochet. They gather to support one another

as they learn skills that will enable them to

earn an income. They also provide emotional

support to one another and a break from their

domestic duties. Grace, pictured below, now

sews enough clothing to sell her items from

a small shop in her home.

Coin Drive for Education Continues

Mike and Maria Higgins of Buffalo, NY,

continue to support the education of orphan Moses Olokitu at Kololo Senior Secondary

School in Kampala, Uganda. Moses, 16, is one of seven children being raised by an uncle.

You can help orphans like Moses by support-

ing our Coin Drive for Education. Your

change can help an orphan remain in school

or help a high school student pay modest

room and board in a city, eliminating daily

walks from their rural homes. Bagishu teens

who attend secondary school in the city of

Mbale must walk up to 10 km one way so

they lose valuable hours of study time.

Some become discouraged and drop out.

Individuals, groups, and businesses can col-

lect change for our Coin Drive for Education.

Buffalo area can be accepted in your contain-

er (coffee can, piggy bank, etc.). Individuals

and groups outside Western New York can

participants will be acknowledged on our

website, www.globalafricanvillage.org, our

newsletter, and our Facebook page.

Groups or individuals donating $150 or more

can “adopt” a student and follow that young

person’s progress in school. This is a great

project for a church group, book club, social

group, or school group.

Updates on 2011 Grant Recipients In 2010, Global African Village received a $1,000 grant from Enactus (formerly SIFE), a student organization at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, under the leadership of Professor Patricia Hutton. We are pleased to provide this update on the five recipients

of small-business development grants, part of our Buusale Kumani small-business grant program. (“Buusale Kamani” means “Friendship is Strength” in Swahili.)

Levi Kutosi was able to build a semi-

permanent house for his children, and he has now branched into growing cabbages, thanks to his grant. He and his family are grateful for

this start.

Abdul Chubeyi moved to the Uganda/Kenya

border, where he is making and selling more farm equipment. This support he received from this Canisius College grant made this business expansion possible.

Billah Nandutu has branched out from

raising cattle to timber cutting. She bought a timber-cutting machine with part of the profits she made from her grant.

Deborah Kutosi could not continue her

small convenience store because of illness. However, she gratefully remembers the supportive gesture from her grant.

Margaret Zeboura's small nursery was

incorporated in a government school project. She salutes the grant that gave Margaret this kick-start.

What's New? In 2015, we plan to launch “Rabbits Grow,”

a project to encourage youth between ages ten and fourteen to raise rabbits. The objec-tive is to instill habits of responsibility through money-generating projects and to prevent these youth from being idle. If you would like to support this project, please contact us.
