So many of you have asked what you can do to help me at this stage of my own transition. It is an amazing gift to have these offers of help even though I am the one on the way out. Yet, I do want to share one thing that would be an amazing help to me in my own anxiety of leaving Good Shepherd — your presence.

Women’s Bible Study Begins September 11

An abundance of water seems to be the new annual tradition for the Youth Kickoff Event, and that includes more than just the water in Lake Gaston! The Youth of Good Shepherd enjoyed a wet, but fun day on Lake Gaston on August 25th.

You may remember that this event had to be cancelled last year because it was scheduled on the day that Hurricane Irene hit North Carolina. This year, I was afraid we would need boats just to get to the lake, as we experienced a deluge the night before. The Lake Gaston area received seven inches of rain on Friday night, and I-95, along with lots of smaller roads around Roanoke Rapids, were closed Saturday morning due to flooding. Despite that, most of our youth and their families made it by alternate routes, and they spent the day on the lake.

The unanimous favorite activity among the youth was being pulled behind the boat on the “Banana,” a long, yellow inflatable that can hold several people. Jumping from the high-dive platform, swimming and, of course, eating were high on the favorites list as well!

A big thank you goes to all who helped make this day possible. Special thanks, however, go to the Youth Council for their support; Doug Harrison and Jama Greene for hosting; Bert Godwin for being our “grillmaster” and cooking up some darned good hamburgers; and all the parents who got their youth to the lake even though they left their arks at home!

All youth in grades 6-12 are invited and welcomed to participate in all of our youth events. By the request of the youth themselves, we will lengthen our Wednesday night youth meetings to an hour and a half, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning on September 19.

Our youth participate in service to the community, including making snack bags for our homeless neighbors downtown, visiting with the children at the Bassett Center, raking lawns, gleaning in fields, and much more. Interspersed with our missions are some fun trips including our January ski trip to Sugar

Mountain, riding the roller coasters at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, and an interfaith pilgrimage to Washing-ton D.C.

We are always excited to include more adults to help guide our youth as they grow in their faith, and to simply offer a ministry of presence by joining us for youth meetings and other gatherings. Please contact the Assistant Rector, Juliana Lindenberg,

with questions or ideas for our youth program!

At 9:45 we will open with prayer as we begin Beth Moore’s series “To Live is Christ: The Life and Ministry of Paul,” an 11-week course on the life and ministry of Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, who “served faithfully, loved heartily, and demonstrated what it means to die daily, crucified with Jesus Christ.” A $20 donation covers the cost of the course materials. To register, email Joan Ashby at [email protected]) or contact the church office. You do not have to be a member of Good Shepherd to join in our fellowship and study. With a nod of the head to William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, did you know that Scott White prepared most of our delicious dinners on Wonderful Wednes-days? Do you love to entertain but just don’t want to do it at your house? Maybe cooking is your secret passion?

The Hospitality Guild is looking for cooks, pot-stirrers and servers -- indi-viduals or groups of four -- to volunteer to prepare our Wonderful Wednesday night dinners. We will provide you with simple recipes and the ingredients. The recipes will be easy meals like spaghetti, chicken tetrazzini, chili, red beans and rice, bag salads and bread.

This is not a cooking contest, and there’s no need for fancy food, just a fun afternoon in the kitchen. Perhaps you have a favorite recipe to share? If so, please send it to me.

This is a great opportunity for fellowship in the kitchen, so please organize a group or volunteer to join a group by calling me at 937-2648 or emailing

Join the Fun!Sunday, September 9, is the Annual Parish Picnic.

Come join us for some of the best barbequed chicken east of the Mississippi River. We will have have face-painting, balloons, clowns, games and prizes and a Cake Walk!

We will also say farewell, bon voyage and con-gratulations to Scott, Missy, Samuel and Harrison as they embark on a new journey together. We want to give them a fond, loving and joyous send off as only Good Shepherd can do.

The picnic and celebrations begin in the parish hall immediately following the 10 a.m. service. Tickets are $7 per person, with a maximum of $25 per family.

All children and youth, ages 3 through 12th grade, are invited to join us for Sunday school at 10 a.m. each Sunday, beginning Sept. 16th, where our theme will be “Let Your Light Shine!” This theme is based on Matthew 5:14-16:

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

Jesus tells us that we are called to be a light to the world. What does that mean? Join us as we begin a year-long adventure to discover how everyone, of ANY age, can bring light and life to our world through our love and faith in Jesus.

Children in preschool through elementary school will explore different Bible stories and the “Faith Traits” they embody. We will seek to learn from

Scripture how we can share the light of Jesus with others in our daily lives. Our Faith Traits will include: Faithfulness, Respect, Generosity, Courage, Forgive-ness, Obedience, Patience, Thankfulness, and Love.

Youth in grades 6 - 12 will also explore a variety of Scripture passages, Faith Traits, and questions of faith and life that are particularly relevant for teens today. Youth will be delving into Scripture and faith together, seeking to let the light of Christ shine through our actions, thoughts, and relationships.
