However in his thought, I see a brilliant ray of light shining through, the ray of grace, hope, love, and of course, the promise of God’s kingdom held out to us all the time. I hear Mr. Rogers saying that if you haven’t loved, you haven’t had your heart broken, and you haven’t been able to glimpse the kingdom of God. It takes a chink in our armor to open us up to this ray of the kingdom. Love is what we are all about! Mr. Rogers knew that; the whole premise of his television ministry to children was very clear about this love, and in particular, the love of a neighbor. About midway through his theme song he sang: I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you. So let's make the most of this beautiful day, Since we're together, we might as well say, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? What a wonderful way to invite children to open their hearts to each other, valuing and cherishing every person they encounter! So why do we have to have broken hearts? I don’t think many of us sign on for that when we get involved with a person or a cause. And I think that’s the hope of Mr. Roger’s idea about church. Love opens us to see the beauty of God right in our midst. It also opens us to broken hearts, broken because we have loved and continue to love. It means we have connected with others in a deep and meaningful way, you could even say a sacred way, a way that allows us to see God in our midst. And broken hearts, even shattered hearts are a cause for celebration. And there’s more; love propels us to service, to helping each other, knowing that everyone has the potential to be our neighbor, to caring for the “least of these”. Mr. Rogers also said “At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants the best for every person. Anything that we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Reaching up to God; Reaching out with Christ’s love to the world.

Rector’s Reflections

Fred (Mr.) Rogers, one of my heroes, said “I'm fairly convinced that the kingdom of God

is for the broken-hearted.” That may sound like a “Debbie Downer” type of statement,

like we as Christians should be about broken hearts all the time. How awful would that

be! I’d be the first one out the door if that was so. However in his thought, I see a

brilliant ray of light shining through, the ray of grace, hope, love, and of course, the

promise of God’s kingdom held out to us all the time. I hear Mr. Rogers saying that if

you haven’t loved, you haven’t had your heart broken, and you haven’t been able to

glimpse the kingdom of God. It takes a chink in our armor to open us up to this ray of the

kingdom. Love is what we are all about! Mr. Rogers knew that; the whole premise of his

television ministry to children was very clear about this love, and in particular, the love

of a neighbor. About midway through his theme song he sang:

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,

I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let's make the most of this beautiful day,

Since we're together, we might as well say,

Would you be mine? Could you be mine?

What a wonderful way to invite children to open their hearts to each other, valuing and

cherishing every person they encounter!

So why do we have to have broken hearts? I don’t think many of us sign on for that when

we get involved with a person or a cause. I can guarantee you that when I first gazed on

my both of my newborn sons, a broken heart was not in my mind but my heart was

completely broken, joyfully shattered by this new love that did indeed give me a very

clear glimpse of God’s kingdom. And I think that’s the hope of Mr. Roger’s idea about

church. Love opens us to see the beauty of God right in our midst. It also opens us to

broken hearts, broken because we have loved and continue to love. It means we have

connected with others in a deep and meaningful way, you could even say a sacred way, a

way that allows us to see God in our midst. And broken hearts, even shattered hearts are

a cause for celebration.

And there’s more; love propels us to service, to helping each other, knowing that

everyone has the potential to be our neighbor, to caring for the “least of these”. Mr.

Rogers also said “At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat

and that wants the best for every person. Anything that we can do to help foster the

intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job.

Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for

service.” One of our dismissals urges you to “Go in peace to love and serve the world!”

Love and service go hand in hand, and our broken hearts can change the world!

Barcodes, UPCs & Box Tops:

Please continue to collect and trim “Best Choice”

brand barcodes, “Box Tops for Education”, and

“Labels For Education”. We are collecting them for Clinton Elementary School and will receive money

for each label and top collected. Many thanks from St. Elizabeth Guild. NOTE: Please collect and trim the

entire label/box top as we won’t get credit for partial pieces. Please see the collection boxes in the foyer for

examples.

Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry at Holy Trinity continues to create prayer shawls and pray

for the people who receive them. As we work on each shawl, we are praying for the

person who will be wrapped in the love and prayer that is in each garment. Most of the

time we know who will receive our shawls, but, there are times when we do not. The

warmth and love that the prayers said while making the shawl is there for the recipient

to feel.

We hope that those of you who have not been with us for a while will come and enjoy the fellowship of

this important Ministry. We welcome all to join us. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 9, at

1 pm in the Memorial Room at the Church.

Words to Ponder: Ongoing Scriptural Study Group Wednesdays at 9:00 am in the Memorial Room (Conf. room) The Bible is not just another dry dusty book; it is the story of our salvation and as

disciples and followers of Jesus Christ we find hope and life in the scriptures and

stories. Join us on for our lively and spirited discussion of the upcoming weeks Holy

Scripture reading. Coffee provided!

have a basket in the foyer for Clinton School to collect the calendars. Calendars with

landscapes, animals, and pictures appealing to children are welcome by teachers and

students for decorating and art projects. Recently over 60 calendars for 2018 were

Elizabeth Guild will make sure they are delivered. Kathy Jacobson

Trinity. We will meet in the Memorial Room on February 21st AND

to meet at 4:30 for an hour and a half workshop. Bring a hook (size G, H, I or larger) and some practice

yarn. Roberta will have extra hooks as well.

Newborn Caps

Over fifty newborn caps were created by some very talented knitters and

crocheters. Thank you! Also, thank you to all the generous folks who donated yarn.

The caps were blessed by Rev. Susanna at the end of Bible Study on January

10th. She also said a prayer for all the precious babies who will be wearing those

caps. Darlene Percival has delivered the caps and the unused yarn to the American

Heart Association office who will distribute the caps in February. We will be

collecting these hats ALL YEAR. Please put them in the box in the foyer.

LENT RESOURCES FOR YOU

READ THE BIBLE WITH US DURING LENT/EASTER 2018

Episcopalians around the world will read the Gospel according to Luke during Lent and the Book of Acts

during Eastertide in 2018. Forward Movement invites you to join this adventure, and we welcome

organizational partnerships to offer resources to sustain and enrich people in this journey.

What is the Good Book Club?

The Good Book Club is an invitation to all Episcopalians to join in reading the Gospel of Luke and the

Book of Acts during Lent-Easter 2018. Episcopalians will start reading Luke on Sunday, February 11 and

read a section of Luke’s Gospel every day through the season of Lent. The entire season of Easter will be

devoted to daily readings from the Book of Acts. Already, individuals, congregations, and organizations

have committed to being a part of the Good Book Club, and we hope you’ll join the journey too!

Go to http://www.goodbookclub.org to see all the resources

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

Saintly Smackdown on a daily basis! Every day they will post two “saints” and give information on both

of them. Celebrity (in the church) bloggers will write about the saints. You can vote for your favorite and

at the end of Lent, a winner will be proclaimed. Great way to find out about our holy ones in the church

and to deepen your prayer life. Brought to you by the Foreward Movement people.

Go to www.lentmadness.org or find it on Facebook under Lent Madness.

We invite you to share in the 2018 Lenten email series from Episcopal Relief & Development. Each day

during Lent you will receive a daily reflection, co-authored by a group of faith leaders from across the

church. During this season of reflection on our Christian faith, their writings will enhance your spiritual

journey as they both inspire and challenge you. Each daily meditation is presented in both English and

Spanish.

Go to www.episcopalrelief.org and search Lent Resources.

Some people give something up for Lent (most of us fail at it).

But why not take something on instead? How about (gasp!) actually reading the Bible? Sure, we all know Bible

verses and may have even tried to read the “whole Bible,” maybe even more

than once. But it can be confusing, contradictory and - if we’re being honest -

really freaking boring in places. But there’s another way to approach

scripture that can actually make sense, and might even be enjoyable.

Join Homebrewed CultureCast’s Amy and Christian Piatt, and Homebrewed

Christianity’s Tripp Fuller in figuring out how to “Survive the Bible”

together this lent. If you’re here right now, you’re in good company.

By joining the group, you’ll get short daily videos that address questions you have about the Bible:

anything you’ve always wondered but don’t feel like you’ve had sufficiently answered. You’ll also be

included in a private Facebook group where you can connect with others who have similar ideas and

questions.

Each Monday, Tripp, Amy and Christian will host a LIVE online class addressing a new Bible topic for

that week. And don’t worry if you miss it, because they’ll be available later to stream. Topic titles

include:

Choosing Weakness

Wax On, Wax Off

Words Matter

Cake or Death?

Saved! (But Still a Dick)

Resurrection for Dummies

Finally, you’ll get a free sample from Christian’s new book with Fortress Press, Surviving the Bible.

In other words, we’re creating a pop-up community for doubters, heretics, and even the faithful to

actually read the Bible this Lent.

The cost? Contribute whatever you can to help make this possible for everyone. The suggested donation

is $20, but no one is turned down for lack of funds.
