CAREERS NEWS Work Experience Year 10 Congratulations to all year 10 students who participated in Work Experience opportunities during the final two weeks of Term 3. Eclectic choices in work placements were made this year with students participating in opportunities with builders, banks, veterinary clinics and hospitals, to name a few. Many students received glowing reports from their employers with six part-time job and four apprenticeship offers made on completion of their work experience weeks. The students were fantastic ambassadors for the school and should be extremely proud of their efforts. We hope these experiences in the work force will help them make informed decisions in future careers pursuits. Well done Year 10! 2015 Jobs EXPO, Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre On Tuesday 27th October, Bathurst City Council in conjunction with Central West Careers Advisors are holding a Jobs Expo. This is a valuable tertiary education and employment information day held at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) for senior students in Years 10-12, as well as members of the Bathurst community and surrounds. All Year 10 students will be attending the afternoon session. We will walk down to BMEC during lunch and will be back at school for Period 6. Permission notes will be emailed to parents. If you would like a hard copy please ask your son to collect one from the library. Mrs Helen Jones Careers Advisor
PRIMARY INDUSTRIES WORLD SKILLS 2015 The regional World Skills Competition for Primary Industries was held at Red Bend College in Forbes on the 15th October. Stannies took four Year 11 boys over to test their practical skills against students from across the Western region. Throughout the course of the day students undertook five tasks including a boomspray calibration; three-point linkage attachment and operation; sheep drafting and drenching; fencing and a team work challenge. They were assessed and marked on each of these tasks to produce a final ranking. The boys achieved excellent results at the end of the day, with Steven Holmes placing 2nd, William Fagan 4th; Oliver Croker 6th and George Chudleigh 10th. These are terrific achievements on which we commend the boys. Mrs Alex Clements, Science Teacher

SPORT REPORTS - 17 OCTOBER 2015 CRICKET TEAM: 1st XI COACH: Mr Tony Fisher OPPONENT: Blue Mountains Grammar School BEST BATSMAN: Isaac Molenkamp 44 BEST BOWLER: Josh Coyte 4/19 SCORE: SSC 145 BMGS 129 Coaches Report: The season had arrived and four players were making their debut for the 1st XI. The first assignment of the season was the tricky road trip to Wentworth Falls to take on Blue Mountains Grammar (BMG). New captain Judd Kerrison saw the coin fall against him and was sent in to bat. Early signs were not good when Hamish Smith received an in-swinging yorker in the 2nd over. Isaac Molenkamp came to the crease to join Brad Campbell and together they methodically frustrated the BMG bowlers and took the side to first drinks. The “cursed over” after drinks saw Campbell (15) dismissed with Ricky Webb and Will Bailey unable to stick around with Molenkamp. At the 26th over it was 4/57. Josh Coyte upped the ante and increased the run rate with some vigorous hitting producing a quick-fire 23 but it became his undoing when he flicked one of the pads with perfect timing and was caught on the boundary. Molenkamp’s fighting innings of 44 came to an end in the 37th over and the score was 6/105. When George Chudleigh went for one big shot too many trying to increase the run rate the score was 116 and not long after that it was nine wickets down and still on 116! Luke Powell (22) was joined by Ryan Campbell and together they put on a handy 10th wicket partnership of 29 to get the score to 145. Joe Lemmich and Luke Powell opened the bowling and had early success finding the edge of the bat to stand in keeper, Webb. By the first drinks break Coyte also had a wicket and BMG were 3/49. The remaining opener provided stubborn resistance until he was deceived in flight and became Campbell’s (1/16) first victim in the 1st XI. At the halfway mark BMG were 4/71 and looking comfortable. When Jack Veitch (1/26) claimed a wicket the score was on 99 and it was clear by the 34th over this game was not going to last the 50 overs. The Stannies boys had to lift with the ball if they wanted a win. Lemmich (1/29) came back on and tied down the batsman and was unlucky not to claim another wicket. Stand in captain Coyte bought Powell back into the attack who claimed the key wicket of the No. 6 batsman and at 6/121 this triggered a batting collapse. Coyte started a new spell and between the two of them, ripped through the tail to dismiss BMG for 129. Coyte finished with 4/19 and Powell 3/23. Catching was also a feature of the innings with 10 catches taken; Chudleigh (4), Webb (3) and one each to Smith, Brad Campbell, Molenkamp and Veitch. Tomorrow the boys travel to St Pats Strathfield in what will be a tough assignment, then back up on Monday to contest the first round of the Downie Shield against St Johns in Dubbo.
TEAM: 5ths XI COACH: Mrs Roslyn King OPPONENT: ASC Opens BEST BATSMAN: Jarrod Cooper 19 runs BEST BOWLER: Nick Trengove 1/14 after 2 overs SCORE: Stannies 5ths 10/136 ASC Opens 3/135 Coaches Report: With our first innings having been declared a washout the team was eager to take to the field. Dan Williams our Captain lost the toss and we were sent into field. The Opposition openers steadily scored runs and we didn’t break the opening partnership until the 14th over at which point they had scored 47 runs. The incoming batters were strong and with us giving away 39 sundries the total steadily crept to 135. Our opening batters Brendan Newman and Max Nell did not get time to settle into any batting rhythm as Max’s wicket was taken in the first over. Jarrod Cooper
joined Brendan at the crease and they managed to put 30 runs on the board in the first four overs. With these runs on the board in a short space of time it was clear we were not going down without a fight. At drinks we were six for 81 and it was time for a pep talk. If we focused we could do it! Our score rose steadily but at the same time our wickets were falling. After 23 overs we were 9/128, we needed just eight runs to win. A nervous Jack Whiteley and Harry Ryan knew a win rested on their shoulders. I commend these two boys on the determination and focus they showed at the crease as they steered us to victory by one run. The team as a whole displayed determination and a positive attitude, they stayed focused and committed to the last ball bowled.
TEAM: SSC 14 Blue COACH: Mrs Fiona Tilley OPPONENT: ASC 13 BEST BATSMAN: Bryce O’Mally BEST BOWLER: Harrison Strickland SCORE: SSC all out/59 vs ASC 7/70 Coaches Report: Stannies again won the toss and new captain, Ben Rudgley, elected to bowl. The first 10 overs were not high scoring, but the field hungered for a wicket, and after 25 overs, wickets had been taken with the opposition scoring 7/70. Single wicket takers Bryce O’Mally, William McRobert and Ryley Davison are to be congratulated. Charlie Weldon and Harrison Strickland, in particular, played an impressive role in minimising runs and they each took two wickets. Dylan Burke and Ryley Davison, as wicket keepers, did an excellent job in keeping the byes low and keeping the pressure up at the stumps. When it was time for Stannies Blue to take the crease, they were quietly confident. Unfortunately, some precision bowling saw the team faltering at 5/7 after only five overs. Stannies needed some batters with the stability of old oak trees, and they got it in Bryce O’Mally and Harrison Begg. The steadfast determination of the middle order saved the team from annihilation and the game ended with a respectable 11 run loss. A big thank you to Mr McRobert and Mr Davison for their help in umpiring, and to Josh Coyte, our new fielding coach. Next week’s game against Blayney should be quite exciting.
TEAM: 14 WHITE COACH: Mr Steven Jessett OPPONENT: St Pats SCORE: SSC 14 WHITE v St Pats Coaches Report: With two players out of the team it was looking like the 14 Whites may have to play with just nine players, but thanks to the Stannies cricket organisation Sandy McIntosh was available and the boys took the field with 10. The opening bowlers, Sam Blatch (2-1) and Hugh Croker (2-7), both combined attack and containment in the right measure. Following on from the good start, Ben McCrossin (2-5) and Lane Brown (2-18) were instrumental in breaking valuable batting partnerships and showed composure with the ball. Jonah Wall (0-5), Joseph Hanley (0-19), Toby Cruickshank (0-9) and Alexander McIntosh (0-6) are also progressing well with their bowling and proved to be valuable against opposition tail enders. The real hidden talent with the ball was Ryan Deegan (0-6) who, though unrewarded for his efforts, bowled with fluent accuracy and real pace. The team will look forward to utilising him further up the order in future. The team’s tight bowling performance was evidenced by the opposition losing seven wickets ‘bowled’. In particular, Hugh Croker is making a habit of collecting middle stumps this season. In the field it was impressive to see a young side remain positive for the full 25 overs and even though a catch was dropped – the boys will relish these difficult chances with regular training. Jonah Wall also managed to hang onto a very difficult juggled catch at mid –wicket. To improve even further the boys need to return into the hands over the stumps and back up each throw. A very solid performance indeed. In chasing 94 the 14 White’s batsmen led from the front with Sam

Blatch (22) and Ben McCrossin (0) looking good before an unfortunate mix-up saw the boys’ partnership broken. The top order jitters continued with an unlucky Jordan Rice (0) falling with 10 runs on the board. However, these boys will definitely be hungry next week to bat themselves into form. Jonah Wall (6) and Hugh Croker (4) both supported Sam Blatch well before Joseph Hanley (11 n.o) proved to be a thorn in the side of the St Pats bowlers for a personal best at the crease. With help from Toby Cruickshank (3) and Ryan Deegan (6) the innings became attritional with Alexander McIntosh (0 n.o.) displaying fortitude with the willow. This allowed the 14 Whites to remain unbeaten on 64 at the conclusion of play. Although beaten in the first innings, the 14 White’s are a team that will develop over 2015-16 and can look forward to coming up against teams such as these again. Thanks must go to those parents and supporters who attended (some travelling hundreds of kilometres) what turned out to be a game notable for the boys’ determined maturity. This Saturday, 14 White play Scots at McKibbon Oval and to ensure the game starts on time, warm-up will start at 8.30.
BASKETBALL TEAM: 17’s COACH: Mrs Victoria Hughes OPPONENT: St Pius BEST PLAYER: Harry Brown SCORE: 21-8 Win! Coaches Report: This was an exciting start to the season – with a team of very enthusiastic, fit and committed young men. Training during the week alerted me to the fact that this team was going to be a force to be reckoned with this season! They have a lot of experience and many were in the very strong team that was coached by Ms Bonny last season. The game was fast paced and the boys were keen to play man on man defence in an attempt to tire the defence. This tactic worked very well for us and we dominated the time with the ball. Considering how dominant the boys were, however, we didn’t convert many points and were only up 13-2 at half time. A slow start to the second half only saw us score 1 point in 10 minutes (luckily our defence was dogged and the opposition didn’t score either!!). The final 10 minutes saw us find our mojo again – with the final score being 21-8. Top scorers were: Taine Campbell – 6, Luke Miller – 5 and Pat Long – 4. Training this week will focus on shooting so we make sure that we capitalise on all that possession!!
TEAM: 15A COACH: Mr Ian Greet OPPONENT: St Pius X BEST PLAYER: Mabior Deng SCORE: 20-57 Coaches Report: With a disappointingly short pre-season, we were very under-prepared for a game against a very solid team (who beat us by 80-odd points in the 13s and 62 in the 14s). The lack of organisation was evident on offense as we failed to create good shooting opportunities or failed to convert the ones we did. Defense was more composed but still lacked the clarity of purpose which is produced by practise. The boys worked hard, and with more hard work in training we will certainly improve from here on.
TEAM: 13As COACH: Ms Cath Kropman OPPONENT: St Pius BEST PLAYER: Nick Adams and Brendan Spasic SCORE: St Pius 73 – SSC 17 Coaches Report: Our first game of the season was extremely tough. We have had some very good training sessions but with a few players in the team who have not played before it was always going to be
difficult. Even though the score is what it is, the team played exceptionally well. The first half was a killer going down 47 – 4. A half time chat and a change in our defensive strategy led to a more respectable total in the second half of 26 – 13. The team showed they are fighters and at no time in the game did they hang their heads. As they warmed up in the second half our shots started to go in and some inspirational plays from various players lifted the team. It did however, highlight some areas that need to be worked on which will be a focus of our training sessions. Although the score doesn’t reflect it, it really was a great start to the season and I was very proud of the team’s efforts.
