The Armchair Traveler with Debra McCall: The Plight, Hopes and Personal Stories of Refugees at Crossroads – A Volunteer’s ExperienceMonday, September 12, 5:30 p.m.Debra McCall served as a humanitarian volunteer working with Syrian, Iraqi, Kurdish, Yezidi, Afghan and Pakistani war refugees on the Greece-Macedonia border at the Idomeni and Eko camps. Despite the harsh conditions and EU political stalemate regarding refugees, there was a vibrant communal, entrepreneurial and humorous spirit. Debra will share stories and photos that capture the resourcefulness, hope, and generosity of the camp residents, as well as their compelling personal narratives. Studies show that children who are read to and use the library perform better in school and grow to be lifelong readers, learners and library users. Your child’s card also provides access to library programs. Please visit the Circulation Desk to obtain cards for your children and/or update your cards.

Space is limited and preference is given to children who reside in Southampton and Tuckahoe School Districts. Have your library card handy when registering. We are happy to accommodate and register out of district patrons the day before a program with any openings that are still remaining. Please note the out of district patron will need to possess a Suffolk County library card.

In an effort to ensure children and families get the most out of library programs, please be present at the start of each program for which you are registered. Patrons are invited to be placed on the stand-by list 15 minutes prior to the start of the program. September 1: Basket weaving has been done for over 10,000 years using materials from animal hair to wood. We will be following the ancient techniques and using jute twine to make our very own baskets.
