You supported a young violin player whose feet dangle from her chair on the Washington Cen-ter stage. You cheered for her fellow musicians

as they tackled increasingly more challenging music. And you rose to your feet in applause for a bassoon-ist who amazed the audience with his breathtaking performance of a Mozart concerto.

Your support enables Olympia youth to pursue this magic.

To express our thanks, we present another year of excit-ing programming. After a quick chamber music camp (see p.2) we’re jumping in feet first with the world premiere of In the Past, a concerto for brass quintet and orchestra at our November 1 concert. (See "You Supported," p.2)

Providing a challenging, fully

integrated music experience

for the young musician

because of support from

people like you.

Dear SOGO Friends,

I have never personally written an “Oh Woe is Me” let-

ter, but it is important to me to keep our supporters

and advocates of SOGO in the know.

Annually, we apply to the WA State Arts Commission

for support, which we have successfully been awarded

for years. Their letter just recently came in the mail

stating they had received too many applications.

Then the dreaded sentence came: “We regret that your application was not recommended for funding.”There is no backup plan for the loss of

the grant mon-

ies, which $1000 of it helped to keep tickets reasonably

priced for students, families and senior citizens to at-

tend SOGO concerts in the Washington Center for the

Performing Arts. Last year, we had nearly 100 students

use vouchers to attend either free or at a discounted

price. Since we attract young families, children six and

under can attend free, and senior citizens, on a fixed

income, can enjoy classical music in a beautiful concert

hall for a very inexpensive price.

“We love to come to the SOGO concerts,” said one senior

couple. “We come for the music, but we had an occasion

to meet one of the young musicians and were so impressed

with her that now we also come to cheer her on.”

If you can help, please donate. Your $5, $50 or $500 will provide opportunities for a classical music experience to be enjoyed by all.

There will be opportunity to apply next year to the WA

State Arts Commission for funds and let’s hope I’ll be

writing to you the “Doing the Happy Dance” letter!

Thank you for considering our request. Please use the

remit envelope or go online at studentorchestras.org to

donate toward this appeal. And remember, every little

bit helps.

Sincerely,Krina Allison, Executive Director

Hjunjin Kim was one of six SOGO musicians to join the Olympia Symphony Orchestra for their annual Concert on the Capitol Campus Lawn.

Alex He and Dante Faulk are part of a string quartet at SOGO’s Conservatory Chamber Camp.

You’ve done it again – for the second year in a row you’ve provided funds for SOGO to hold a summer Conservatory Chamber Camp.

In mid-August, Maestro Welsh emailed all of the Conservatory students with sheet music for their ensemble group. There were standard ensembles like a woodwind quintet and a violin quartet, and there were crazy combos, like Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes which had a piano, a clarinet, and a small group of strings.

In late August, the kids spent the better part of two eve-nings rehearsing, getting to know each other, and finally performing for each other and their parents. (There may have been some pizza and ice cream, too!)

You know how important chamber ensembles are for these young musicians to grow. They can’t hide - they have to learn to watch each other for changes in tempo and dynamics. It’s a great way for SOGO musicians to warm up for the coming orchestra season.

You’ve done it again! Chamber music Camp Season 2

“Chamber music expertise is essential for SOGO in order that members of the orchestra can function as a large chamber group, enabling me to save my conducting arm! ”

~ Maestro Welsh

This piece was written by our composer-in-residence Mark Thome expressly for the Ever-green Brass Quintet, which will be the featured ensemble. SOGO has a claim on one member of the quintet – French horn player Liz Ward is also SOGO’s horn Teaching Artist and the Brass Choir Assistant Conductor.

In March, we are thrilled to present SOGO clari-netist David Hales (Timberline H.S.) performing

Carl Maria von Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet. David is an three year veteran of SOGO. His sister, Kate, will be cheering him on from the Conservatory flute section.

May’s concert will feature Franz Doppler’s An-dante and Rondo for 2 Flutes, with SOGO flutists Morgan Hurtado (Olympia H.S.) and Brynna Paros (Homeschool). David, Brynna and Morgan all competed at the state level at this year’s solo & ensemble contest.

Winter Cheer HereYou know who they are - those people on your holiday gift list who are so tough to shop for: the teetotaler, the calorie counter, the person who already has too much “stuff.” Homemade brownies or a bottle of wine just won’t do. We have a solution: Spread some winter cheer and support SOGO’s fall fundraiser!

SOGO offers beautiful floral quality poinsettias and 22-inch fragrant noble fir wreaths. We are bringing back our SOGO Christmas Blend coffee, made locally by Olympic Crest Coffee Roasters. Prices are reason-able and our suppliers are local, so your money stays in our community.

Discounts and delivery are available for larger orders. New order forms will be available soon on the SOGO website (www.studentorchestras.org).

The Original ParTy Music Planning a private party, business meeting or other event? Contact SOGO (360.352.1438 or [email protected]) to inquire about engaging one of our Musicians Out Jammin’ Olympia (MOJO) chamber ensembles. Live music adds a very special touch that your guests will appreciate and you will remember forever.

SOGO MOJO ensembles are eager to perform at recep-tions, parties, weddings, holiday festivities, or profes-sional events. MOJO coordinator Mary Jo Rydholm is an accomplished violin player and has dedicated much of her playing career to chamber ensemble playing. With her vast knowledge and library of chamber music, we can help you find an ensemble to match the mood and length of your event to help make it a success.
