Here we are in Southern Ontario and Western New York, experiencing a somewhat unusual occurrence for this time of year—Spring! How pleasant not being rushed into summer. Having time to bloom gives an airy feel to space. The spirit soars and the mind gains perspective, replacing drudgery with inquisitiveness. And so academic librarians are compelled to come together, confer, and ask those questions pregnant with meaning: How long do you leave your scraper in the car? Do up-side-down tomato planters yield much fruit? Did the garment industry in Rochester go directly overseas or south first? This is our nature as academic librarians. For us the seeds of thought are organic and heirloom and are freely disseminated, but, though the ground we maintain is incredibly fertile, the landscape around us seems increasingly paved with highways more singular in purpose. And so we are driven to also confer about subject matter more speculative in nature: What is the information landscape? Will the information highway ever have so many lanes people will be afraid to drive there? What is the walking or bike-riding of research and should we preserve those paths? Does speed kill? The subject of this year’s WNY/O ACRL Spring Conference is scholarly communication. The information highway and networked resources have radically altered the way researchers publish and access scholarship. On one hand, pre-print systems like arXiv.org are the new dissemination method and traditional print publications are little more than a tenure requirement; on the other, if tenure requirements remain based on traditional methods of dissemination, will libraries be able to afford their costs? As shown in the ITHAKA S+R 2009 Faculty Survey, academic libraries’ role in this new landscape is a complex multi-faceted topic, one we will examine over the next few conferences. The mission of academic libraries in relation to the mission of their institutions as a whole hinges on the scholarly communication paradigm. Hopefully you will be able to join us Friday May 7th in Niagara Falls for a lively and important conversation on scholarly communication. And bring with you your most important trait as librarians – inquisitiveness.

Keynote Speaker

Ex malo bonum: a bold new focus on scholarly communication

Wayne Johnston is head of the Research Enterprise and Scholarly Communication team at the University of Guelph

library. Prior to joining the University of Guelph in 2004 Wayne worked for the United Nations in both New York

and Geneva. His experience also includes working with wildlife management in Canada’s Arctic; establishing a

library in Ghana; promoting fair trade in Nepal; and working with refugees and victims of war in Croatia.

Wayne Johnston

The University of Guelph Library, like many academic libraries these days, was faced with the need

to make some daunting budget cuts. The response was a major organization renewal initiative. This talk will

reveal how the need to do less with less resulted in a bold new commitment to scholarly communication on

our campus. We will focus on organizational structure, radical transformation of librarian responsibilities,

and strategies for connecting in meaningful ways with faculty in all disciplines.
