From Our Principal Mrs Watson

During these past two days, Brian Mason, Nathan Mulhearn, Sue Maclean and I have been working with

300 other school leaders at the first South Symposium. A summary of these days will be prov ided in the

next newsletter. My sincere thanks goes out to Mrs Therese Rae and Mrs Jess Hill who deputised for us in our absence.

Strategic Planning

We approach school improvement with a 'growth' mindset, a belief in the ability of our community to

make ongoing improvements in meeting the needs of the students and community we serve. Each year

we identify goals in the areas of Catholic Identity, Learning and Teaching and Sustainability. There is an

expectation from Brisbane Catholic Education, (BCE) staff, that we gain an understanding of our current

situation, including student outcomes and school practices, by evaluating data and other information,

and we are able to demonstrate our improvement through evidence.

To do this we use the BCE School Improvement Framework which is designed to build capability — the

planning, reporting and review processes grow schools' understanding and application of evid ence-based best practices, to maximise educational outcomes and grow a culture of improvement.

Attached to this newsletter are two of our Strategic Planning documents for your information. The first

one is the Annual Report on our 2019 School Goals and the next is the Annual Plan for 2020. These goals are identified after a period of reflection on our practice and a review of our student data.

Uniforms

We have now received the full order of our uniforms and the outstanding orders have been delivered to

classes for students to take home. The new shirts and blouses look great. We could not have completed

the roll out without the hard work of so many volunteers who helped Erika in the shop before and after their own work hours. We will find a way to thank these families over the next few weeks.

A few reminders about our uniform policy are below, I ask for your support to ensure students are

dressed appropriately at all times.

All students attending St Rita's Primary School are expected to wear the required uniform at all times

If a student is out of uniform, a note to the class teacher from the parent/guardian is to be sent in to explain the reasons for this.

Jewellery - One sleeper or stud in each ear and a watch are acceptable.

Shoes must be black and worn with white crew socks.

The School has several ‘Sun Safe Procedures’ in place for the well-being of students. One such procedure is “No hat, no play”. The student will have to sit out of play if they do not have their school hat.

Grooming

Students’ hairstyles should be clean and neat. Colours and styles should not draw undue attention to

the student eg tracks and undercuts would attract undue attention. Hair longer than collar length should

be tied back. Scrunchies and ribbons are to be in school colours and are available from the uniform shop.

From Our AP - Mr Mason

Dear Parents and Carers,

Reporting on Student Progress

Last Friday I sent out an email to parents regarding our reporting process for this year. In that email I

explained that the first of our reporting opportunities, brief parent-teacher-student conferences will take

place during Weeks 6-10 of this term. The aim of this first round of reporting will be for the teachers to

Page 5: Newsletter Term 1 Week 4 - St Rita's Primary School · 2020. 2. 18. · Newsletter News The Newsletter will now go out every second Tuesday on the even weeks of the term. Flyers and

have an early opportunity to share with parents and carers their observations, offer any affirmations,

identify any concerns and set any directions, in partnership with parents and students, for student

learning moving forward. This week (Wk 4), teachers will be asked to determine the days/nights and

times that they will be available for these Parent-Teacher-Student interviews during that five-week

window. During Wk 5, parents will be contacted and given access to PTO, through which they can view

teacher availability and book specific interview times from each teacher's available times and dates within that window of time. More information will follow shortly.

St Rita’s Safety Alerts

During the second half of 2018, we produced three documents, which we called St Rita’s Safety Alerts

that outlined our structures and expectations with regard to Student Safety and our Duty of Care. These

Safety Alerts were published in the newsletter and uploaded to the Parent Portal.

These have been recently updated and can be found in the School Communications section of the Parent Portal.

• Safety Alert 1 relates to Duty-of-Care, Formal Supervision and Use of Play Spaces Before and After School.

• Safety Alert 2 relates to Traffic Safety

• Safety Alert 3 relates to Pets, Bikes Skateboards etc in school grounds.

I encourage you to access and read these important documents.

Regards,

Brian Mason APA

PLL Observations - From Mrs Maclean

Each term our teachers regularly meet with year level colleagues to collaborately plan learning and teaching for all subjects in the Australian Curriculum.

Every 3 weeks, year level teachers meet with me to plan English learning and teaching. This week I am sharing the Term 1 Science, Maths and HASS.

If you have any questions regarding any curriculum areas, please contact me. Thank you Sue

Well done to this week's Gotcha award winners – Georgia in 1T and Liliana in 5L. Their photo will be on

our Learning Enhancement Blog. This year we have the addition of our VIP (Very Impressive Pupil)

seating. Our current winners will start our next assembly on these seats. Once they draw out the new winners, the new students will enjoy the rest of the assembly in the VIP seats.

From The Resource Centre

Hello from the library,

Are you amazing at contacting books? Do you cringe when you get bubbles and creases in the contact

when you’re covering books? If you are this person, we need you to share your amazing abilities to help

us contact our new library books. Please come into the library and speak with one of our librarians, we would love to see you.

Music News - Mr Tyrrell

Music News

It is great to see the kids in full swing with the performing arts already! Just a reminder that St Rita ’s has

a new Facebook group 'St Rita's Performing Arts'. I encourage parents of students that are involved in

Choir, Ukulele and Drama to please join the group, as it is an excellent way of communicating out all that

is performing arts at St Rita's. The group will keep you updated on performances, links to music that the students are learning, etc.

If choir students haven’t already done so, they will need to return forms for Choir Shirts. I need to know the shirt sizes so I can hand them out before photo day.

For students that have been interested in Drama - I usually have a very high volume of students that

want to participate in drama. Instead of having a 'drama club', I will be holding auditions for two plays

involving students in Year 2/3/4 (junior drama) and Year 5/6 (senior drama). I will be asking interested

students to see me at a morning tea time (TBC) to go through the play with them and then I will cast

students in the play.

Please watch this space for some exciting news about an up-coming production that St Rita's will be involved in!!

Have a great week,

Mr Tyrrell
