ACTING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Members of the Upwey Primary School Community, It has been fantastic to see the children working so well in their classes on a variety of learning activities
for the start of a very busy term. When I was showing a new family around the school I was proud to
see the welcoming smiles and friendliness. This is a wonderful community, I have appreciated the
words of support that I have received as I take on the dual roles on Year 2/3 class room teacher and the
Acting Principal role while Malcolm Aspinall is on Long Service Leave for Term 3.

JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL End of Term 2 activity was a wonderful success. The students and
Staff had fun dressing up in animal suits and raising money for the worthy cause related to Motor
Neuron Disease. We raised about $100.00 thank you for supporting this worthy cause.
2016 SCHOOL YEAR We are currently taking enrolments both for this year and the 2016 school year. If you are yet to enrol your child or are aware of any friends or family members who are yet to enrol their child/children, please ensure that this is completed as soon as possible. It makes it much easier to ar-range classes and Staff if we are aware of the enrolments. On the issue of friends, word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising, so if you have any friends who are looking to enrol their child/children in a terrific school please make sure that you mention Upwey Primary School. Encourage them to learn and grow with us. BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLE It would be appreciated if you could donate an hour or two of your time to join the roster for man-ning the stall at Bunnings in Scoresby, Ferntree Gully Road on Saturday 26
th July. This is always
a great way to meet other parents and help our school at the same time. Please let the Office or any of the Parents Association members know if you are able to assist. NUDE FOOD Here at Upwey Primary School we all want the best for our children. To help we are encouraging everyone to have healthy eating habits. It is great that children can bring snacks and their lunch in reusable containers on a daily basis. We are trying to reduce the waste in the playground and also the amount of waste that is placed in the school bins each day. There has been an improvement in the reduction in the rubbish placed in classroom bins. Together we can make a difference and make our school an even better place. If you do see rubbish please help by picking it up. There are plenty of birds that actually carry the rubbish and drop it from up high! LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES These are the following activities that are available each week: Mondays – Gardening club, weather permitting. Year 4-6 Singing group – new in Term 3 commencing 20

LIGHTING AROUND THE SCHOOL You may have noticed if you use the school ei-
ther early in the morning or and the end of the
day that the lights are now working again. This is
much safer for everyone who is walking during
the darker hours of the day.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE I wish to inform you that Matilda the Before and After School Care Coordinator will be on leave at this stage, for the first two weeks of Term 3. This has occurred at short no-tice and we have been extremely fortunate to have the services of staff who are known to your children and the Staff. I would like to thank San-dra and Kay who stepped in earlier this week and to Kim who will continue to the end of Week 2. Kim was here earlier in the year and knows the children and has been very keen to return to our school. I am sure that you will make her feel most welcome when you see her. I appreciate your support of the BASC program and will con-tinue to keep you informed as required. HOOPTIME This program is on again and the Year ¾ stu-dents will be travelling to the Boronia Stadium to participate. Please make sure that forms and payment are returned by Monday. This is im-portant as the train ticket is purchased prior to the date of travel. LION KING EXCURSION Thank you to al families that have finalized their payments for the Lion Kind Excursion. Today was the last day for payments. SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING This coming Monday (22
nd July) we will look at
the School Review Report from the School Re-viewer that was received in the last week of Term 2. This document includes the suggested goals for the next School Strategic Plan which leads the direction of the school for the next four years. You are most welcome to attend this meeting to hear the main points that were made in this doc-ument. The normal agenda and reports from the different committees will also take place as part of the report to the School Council on the activi-ties of the school in the last month. PROJECT UPWEY & UPWEY PRIMARY SCHOOL ART PROJECT Next week Mrs. Kittredge will be available after
school on Wednesday to meet with interested
parents/guardians and community members if
you would like to assist with this project. This is a
wonderful project to get involved in. If you go
past Woolworths in Belgrave you will see huge
murals that have been completed by past students
at Upwey Primary School in 2009 that are still
there on display at the back near the carpark.
I encourage you to support Mrs. Kittredge with this initiative as it will create a sense of pride in our community as they will be place in the Upwey Vil-lage area. DOODLE 4 GOOGLE “If I could travel back in time I would…” Our school is registered for this project and this is a competition for students in Years 1 – 10. As part of class activities the students will have the opportunity to produce a doodle for Google. They will need to write a title for their doodle and a supporting statement – no more than fifty words. They need to explain the idea that they have por-trayed in their doodle. The doodle will be present-ed on white, landscape sheet of A4 paper. This is strictly a two-dimensional challenge and three-dimensional artwork is not acceptable. This competition is open until the 21
st August
when the submissions close online. Student work will be on display in the foyer later in the term for community viewing. Have fun doo-dling and see what creative ideas you can come up with. SCHOOL FOCUS - RESILIENCE During the coming weeks we will focus on Resili-ence. Resilience is the capacity of an individual to adapt to events and changes by “bouncing back” and continuing to participate in the normal activi-ties of the day. It is about building the capacity to cope with future life events and hardships. People who are resilient tend to be more hopeful, confi-dent and believe in themselves even when they experience difficult or challenging situations. However it is important to remember that resili-ence is not a personality trait that a person is born with. We need to support each other and learn to adapt when things are difficult. Upwey Primary is a great school where support for other people is evident. Together as a community we need to continually support the children as they grow older and experience a wide range of situations. They need to develop communication skills to manage their feelings with confidence and be comfortable in themselves as members of the community.
Have a safe and happy weekend. Elizabeth Eeles Acting Principal
Animal day
Hi! My name is Billie the unicorn. It is my first day at animal school. I like to heal people.
Today we went to prep1C and we played music and then we went to 5/6 w and Mrs Wood
took a photo of P1/C ,2/3E,3/4W and 5/6W. After the photo the animals went walking
around the school.

ANIMAL INVASION
Hi my name is Digs. The thing I do is dig holes. Today I am at animal school and its really
cool. First we went to Prep/1C to sing the Gruffalo song and other songs. Then we went to
5/6W and had a picture taken. Then I am here writing this story hoping that I will have a
great day [technically I know I will]. Today I will be doing meerkat things. By the way at
Prep/1C we did a lot of dancing. It was also fun. Happy animal invasion.

Animals School Hello, I am a lion, well if you want to know
my name is Angelina. I saw a lot of animals at
school, animals like rabbits, tigers and ele-
phants. They all looked really tasty. I only
saw one lion and a cow. I really wish I was a
tiger because they are beautiful animals. I have
a friend called Sebi. He’s also a lion. I like playing
with the animals that were there. I never had so much f
un before, catching animals.
