Student Leadership Elections

In a new procedure for 2015, this week Year 5 students listened to the speeches from the School Captain nominees for 2016 and then voted on a top 8. These students will then progress to the school assembly to deliver their speech again and be voted by their peers in Years 2-5.

A big thank you to all the nominees, the 23 female and 10 male students who stepped forward and presented themselves. Teachers were very impressed with the time and effort the students went to in preparing their speech and poster and were a credit to themselves and their family.

Congratulations to the following eight boys and eight girls (in alphabetical order) who will present their speeches on the 2nd of December in the Hall.

Mo Day

Thanks to the initiative of Mr Wiblen and the support of fellow male staff members, we held a Mo-Day today to raise funds for research into male health. There were many ‘mo’s’ seen on students and teachers alike as well as a game of dodge ball at lunch time between students and teachers. A big thanks to all those that have support-ed Mr Wiblen, Mr Fitz, Mr Franki, Mr Tate, Mr Gold and a special thanks to our male staff for supporting this very worth while cause.

Walkathon

A reminder for those that have not yet returned their sponsor sheet and donations back to school. The Walkathon is the major fundraiser for the year and together we can make a difference and achieve all our goals.

The drawing of the raffle will happen very soon, stay tuned to see if you are a lucky winner. Thanks again to all the students and families that have already supported this fundraiser in 2015.

Book Week Thank you

Thank you to students, staff and parents for their support during Book week this year. Book week has been celebrated over a few weeks beginning with students contributing to the colourful library display, the Shine a light Musical performance, a talk from author Elizabeth Cummings and finally concluding with our Book Week parade last Thursday. It has been a busy but fun few weeks. A very special thank you to Maria Guerrera for her wonderful support and for her amazing art work displayed in the library. Keep reading!! Year 5 Mighty Mates

We have a group of year 5 students who have nominated to be Mighty Mates this year. An MJ Mighty Mate (MJMM) is a buddy to younger children in the playground at Maroubra Junction Public School. The MJMM is a role model for younger students and demonstrates how we use our three core values of Respect, Safety and Learning in the playground. Core Value Corner

We ask parents to support our schools core value code by regularly checking the weekly core value corner in school newsletters and discussing the focus expectations with your child/children. This week's Expectation of the Week is 'Be Fair' and it comes under the Core Value of 'Respect'. It will be important this week to breakdown the word 'fair' and look at it as an adjective - treating people equally without favouritism or discrimination...and also as an adverb - without cheating or trying to achieve unjust advantage.

Students should also be reminded that being fair should be a part of everything they do and not just associated with playground games or sports.

Deloitte Volunteers

Last week we had some fantastic helpers from Deloitte to help Mac in the gardens. At Deloitte, we believe true business success is linked to wider social purpose. Held every year, IMPACT Day allows Deloitte staff to take one day out from their daily jobs to contribute their skills and labour to the community. They did an amazing job on one of the hottest days of the year. On behalf of the MJPS community we would like to thank Deloitte for their efforts.

3-6 Canteen - Friday

Could all parents please ensure that on Fridays years 3-6 students write their sport name on their lunch order not their class name? There is currently a lot of confusion about lunches on Fridays because students are in sport groups not class groups. We thank you for you support.

School Banking News

What fabulous savers we are at MJPS! The student banking team has deposited more than $1,000 each week over recent weeks which is a record for our school! Great work everyone!

Next week, TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER is the LAST DAY to ORDER rewards this year. Many rewards are no longer available and we put a new order slip for you to use in all deposit books yesterday.

Last week for student banking is week 10 (Tuesday 8 December).

School Council News

This week the school council held its final meeting for the year. Trisha Noble, Easter Carmeli, Lisa Parsci and Clara Hawker have all finished their time on the council. The council welcomes Terri Flynn as a new parent representative and is looking for one more interested parent who would like to participate.

The school executive provided an overview of the results of the Tell Them From Me survey which have just been released. They provide some valuable insights into staff and student opinion on the school and the survey will be undertaken again next year.

As always, the school is looking for ways to engage with parents and the community, so please put forward any suggestions you have and don't be afraid to get involved in any way!

Student Leader Elections

This year we had 33 Year 5 students who nominated themselves for a Student Leader position for 2016. These students presented their campaign speeches to the Year 5 cohort, Year 5 teachers and Mr Ackerman on Monday. The standard of speeches were exceptionally high and it was wonderful to hear how passionate our Year 5 students are about Maroubra Junction Public School. Congratulations to the all the candidates for their nomination and having the courage to participate in the process.

After the speeches the Year 5 cohort voted via ballot to shortlist the candidates to 8 boys and 8 girls who will present their speech at the Student Leadership Election Assembly on Wednesday 2

nd December, starting at 10am

in the hall. Parents are invited to attend this assembly.

After the speeches on Wednesday 2nd

December, Year 2 to Year 5 students and staff will decided by a ballot the students who will become our school leaders for 2016. Elected leaders will be notified later this term and formally announced on Recognition Day.

Year 6 Mini Fete

Year 6 will be hosting the annual Maroubra Junction Mini Fete fundraiser on Tuesday 1

st December from 11.40am

until 1pm.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 5 are invited on this day to visit the 17 exciting stalls Year 6 have created. There will be a variety of food and game stalls for the students. Please take the time to look at the information about the different stalls which is featured in this week’s newsletter and discuss the options that are appropriate for your child.

There will be many things on offer to purchase so please don’t forget to provide your child with money on the day. All the profits the Year 6 students make from the stalls are used to buy the school a gift on behalf of Year 6 2015. Year 6 will be presenting skits to advertise their stall at the 3-6 assembly on Thursday 26

th November. They are also

currently working on posters to advertise their stall to be displayed around the school, so please keep your eye out! We have some very excited Year 6 students!

Summer sport continues this week until Week 8, November 27. This Friday, 27 November: Softball & Softball M.J.P.S v Matraville Soldiers Settlement (friendly) at Heffron Park 2 AFL Finals at Heffron Park (behind the pool) NB: This is the last week of Summer Sport,. Please settle any outstanding payments.

Sports Stars

Lily D (3T), Zali D (3F) and Chase D (5G) all competed in the State Relay Championships last weekend. Zali and Chase got through to the finals both finishing in 5th place in their respective age groups.

Toy Donation for Barnados

The MJPS Fundraising Committee consists of a small

group of Year 6 students who want to make a difference in

the world.

This year, we have decided that we would like help

children in need who may not receive brand new toys for

Christmas, like we do.

We would like to ask for your help in donating new toys to

place under our MJPS Christmas Tree (that will be located

in the office). These donations will be collected from

Monday the 23rd of November to Wednesday the 9th of

December. These donations will then be transported to

the Barnados Australia gift appeal to be wrapped and

distributed to foster and homeless children across

Australia.

Any gift donation is much appreciated. Please see the gift

guide for some ideas on what to give.

sure you are well prepared for our end of year Band Spring Soiree on Wednesday 25th

What to practise! Junior Band – You will be starting to look at page 23 in the Tradition of Excellence Book in prepara-

tion for the more challenging repertoire you will be getting next year.

Practise tip – Take breaks, lots of breaks Practicing can be physically demanding and often it’s easy to just keep going until you begin to physically

tire. But practice also involves a lot of brain work and often we compromise our practice by not giving our

brains time to absorb what we have accomplished physically. We’ve all become frustrated by particular

sections of the works we’re practicing that just don’t work. It’s very important to have regular breaks to

refresh the mind. I remember one of my teachers saying that I should be having a break from practice

every half hour! Go for a walk, have a snack, a cup of tea, or anything to let your brain rest from all that

concentration. You’ll soon see that taking regular breaks makes a real difference to the effectiveness of

your practice.

In an entirely student centred and student directed approach to

learning, some of the students in KS chose to stage a production of ‘Cinderella’ for their fellow classmates

last week. Once the cast was decided, the production team set to

work to make their vision a reality... Roles and responsibilities were negotiated, and after days of collaborative preparation and planning, in the form of costume design and creation and rehearsals,

the theatrical team were ready for the big day...! :)

Wow! What a mo-tastic response we had on Wednesday to our Movember support and awareness day. Students donned mo’s of all shapes and sizes to promote the health of men and to show their support for the MJPS Mo Team that are raising funds. Students from all grades participated in a staff vs students dodgeball game to promote physical active lifestyles. For the record, the students out-shone their older competitors 3 rubbers to 2. A big thank you must go to the Year 6 artists who designed moustaches such as the curly wurly, the boony, sergeant mo, el diablo, the classic and the Frenchman—just to name a few. A big thank you to those who have donated money this month. We raised close to $300 today and have now nearly surpassed the $1000 mark for the team. If you would still like to donate please go to:

In 2015 the MJPS P&C voted to help support the remediation of the landscape area. The P&C aims, with your help, to raise $20,000 in funds to assist the school in completing this project. To finish off the year we will be holding an end of year disco and pizza party. The disco for K – 2 will commence at 5:30pm – 6:45pm. Primary students disco is from 7:00pm – 8:30pm. Tickets to the disco will be on sale on the night at the “Door”. Prices are Single child $5 or Family $8. Pizza, drinks, chips and glow in the dark merchandise will be on sale during the night. We need volunteers to run this event from 4:30pm for set up, from 5:30pm for sales and packing away.
