Recognition Day Assembly

This Thursday 10 December, we will hold our annual Recognition Day assembly. We hope that our parent community can come and join in this wonderful event.

Starting at 9.15-10.00am for the K-2 classes, teachers will hand out Recognition certificates and Master certificates.

Following at 10.00-11.00am in the Hall, our 3-6 students will be presented with the formal Recognition Day awards. Students will then proceed back to class where their class awards will be distributed.

Sports and Arts Assembly

This Friday 11 December we will hold our annual Sports and Arts assembly where students achievements in the arts and on the sports field are celebrated. This assembly takes place in the hall from 9am to 11.00am and parents are again very welcome.

Student Leadership for 2016

Last Wednesday we held our Student Leadership Election Assembly where 16 student leader candidates presented their speeches to the Year 2 to 5 cohorts. Each of the candidates presented convincing cases on their values as a school leader and I am confident that our student leadership team for 2016 will be in good hands. Congratulations to the 8 students who have been elected as our Student Leaders for 2016 Girls: Audrey S, Nicole T, Lily A, Sophia D Boys: Dennis H, Quinn B, Matthew G, Emilio V

Their elected position will be not be announced until the Recognition Day Assembly on Thursday, starting at 10am. House and Vice Captains will also be announced at this assembly. I would like to congratulate all our candidates, including the house captain candidates, who were part of the whole election process. It was wonderful to see how confident and well spoken our Year 5 students have become and know that all our Year 5 students will be outstanding leaders in 2016.

If you are aware of students that will not be returning to MJPS in 2016, please ring the office on 9349 8333 or email the school to let us know. We are currently forming classes for 2016 and this information is extremely important.

Book Week Thank you

Thank you to students, staff and parents for their support during Book week this year. Book week has been celebrated over a few weeks beginning with students contributing to the colourful library display, the Shine a light Musical performance, a talk from author Elizabeth Cummings and finally concluding with our Book Week parade last Thursday. It has been a busy but fun few weeks. A very special thank you to Maria Guerrera for her wonderful support and for her amazing art work displayed in the library. Keep reading!! Year 5 Mighty Mates

We have a group of year 5 students who have nominated to be Mighty Mates this year. An MJ Mighty Mate (MJMM) is a buddy to younger children in the playground at Maroubra Junction Public School. The MJMM is a role model for younger students and demonstrates how we use our three core values of Respect, Safety and Learning in the playground. Core Value Corner

We ask parents to support our schools core value code by regularly checking the weekly core value corner in school newsletters and discussing the focus expectations with your child/children. This week's Expectation of the Week is 'Be Fair' and it comes under the Core Value of 'Respect'. It will be important this week to breakdown the word 'fair' and look at it as an adjective - treating people equally without favouritism or discrimination...and also as an adverb - without cheating or trying to achieve unjust advantage.

Students should also be reminded that being fair should be a part of everything they do and not just associated with playground games or sports.

Core Value Corner

We ask parents to support our schools core value code by regularly checking the weekly core value corner in school newsletters and discussing the focus expectations with your child/children. This weeks focus is under the core value

This week's Expectation of the Week is BE A RESPONSI-BLE CYBER CITIZEN and it comes under the Core Value of SAFETY. Another great reminder for the end of term and also an important one as students head off to enjoy their school holidays.

Try to revisit the word 'responsible' with you children. Also define with what it means to be a Cyber Citizen and what it means to be Cyber Safe. Some ideas could include: the safe and responsible use of Information and Communica-tion Technologies (ICT), maintaining a positive approach about the many benefits brought by technologies...and encouraging students to identify the risks associated with ICT. Some topics you might like to address (depending on age appropriateness) could include: Digital Citizenship, Cyber Bullying, Safety on the Internet, Protecting Passwords and Personal Information, Social Media Apps and Cyber Crime.

Year 6 Mini fete

The Year 6 Mini Fete was a great success last Tuesday. This was because of the hard work from our students and the Year 6 teachers, the support from our Year 6 parents who very kindly donated some if not all the cost for the products for the stalls and lastly because of school community who purchased the items on offer. The Year 6 teachers would like to say a VERY BIG thank you to all. We raised just under $6 300 for a present that Year 6 2015 will give back to the school. The Year 6 students have been thinking of ideas for this present and our school captains Cyrus and Natasha will present a list to Mr Ackerman in the coming days. The present will be announced at the Farewell Assembly on Wednesday 16

Christmas Fundraising

The Fundraising Committee would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who donated gifts and toys to our Christmas Gift Appeal. The toys were dropped off to the Barnados Gifts for Kids Santa's Workshop in the city on Wednesday afternoon. They will make a lot of children happy this Christmas.

School Banking

School banking is finished for the year, the volunteer team thank everyone at school for your support; the admin staff for collecting and distributing all your deposit books, Mac for taking the cash to the bank, Mr Gold for the use of his quiet room and Ms Noble for arranging a laptop for us every week.

We wish everyone a lovely summer break and look forward to commencing banking in week 2 or 3 of term 1 2016. And finally, a BIG, BIG thanks to Kelly, Nelly, Lydia, Chandra, Susana, Nadege, Sue and Davina our banking volunteers extraordinaire!

Sports Star

I received an email during the week regarding James T in 5L and his journey through sport in 2015.

James has two loves, that of league and of soccer. Unfortunately his league team, the Coogee Wombats had to forfeit the last 3 games of the season due to injuries and to make matters worse, James’ soccer team was made up of

new people and he was finding it hard to find to get into the swing of this new side.

But James stuck to it, and gradually his soccer team started to win games, eventually winning the grand final 2-1. This story is not about the win, but rather how James and the other soccer boys got there and the lessons they all took from the season.

James was an inspiration to the team, collecting the game ball as a token of appreciation.

This is a great story, and a worthy entry to our ‘Sports Stars’ column. Well done, James.

Once again I have had the pleasure of sharing my passion for art with others, this time working with

Mr Gold and 5G . Over the past 3 weeks, we have been exploring the concept of

‘Global Environments’ with a focus on Rainforests. We experimented with a range of art mediums, incorporating

sketching, drawing, painting, collage and natural collage, along with the use of digital technology and photography as inspiration

for our artistic creations. 5G were engaged from the start and proved to be a talented and highly motivated group of students to work with. They worked collaboratively to share ideas and

resources before creating their own unique interpretations of the ideas and concepts explored.

P&C MEETING - update

The final P&C meeting of the year was held last Thursday. Congratulations were given to Lisa Kee for her efforts in sourcing the majority of the walkathon prizes. So far $13K has been raised from the Walkathon. A fantastic effort by students and their sponsors. These funds will contribute to our commitment of $40K towards the refurbished landscape area behind the library. The Principal discussed the school’s wishlist for 2016 which focused on air conditioning the Library, classrooms and more iPads for K-2. Suggestions from members included new home readers, more art and drama materials and instruction and more targeted excursions on subject areas. The P&C would like to hear suggestions from parents as to how next year’s P&C funds could be spent. Please email your sugges-tions to mjpspandc@gmail.com . These suggestions will be included in a list which will be circulated to members and voted on early next year. Also at this meeting next year’s events were discussed - including Tea and Tissues for the first full day of Kindergarten on Monday 1

A big thank you to all the uniform shop volunteers in 2015, without you this shop would not have been able to open—on behalf of all the community a very big thank you! The shop will be open on Wednesday 27

th January.
