Anglers are reminded to follow the rules for fishing in Ontario and stick to the daily fishing limits to help preserve and protect our province’s fish populations. QUICK FACTS

Approximately 1 million fishing licences are sold in Ontario each year.

Fish license fees go back into programs that help stock Ontario waterways, conduct biological research and support conservation projects.

Ontario’s lakes and rivers are home to approximately 160 types of freshwater fish.

New anglers can borrow fishing gear for free through the Tackleshare program.

Check out the Ontario Family Fishing Events website for events near you.

Quotes “Fishing is a great way for families and friends to get outside, spend time together and enjoy Ontario’s beautiful lakes and rivers. Family Fishing week offers everyone the opportunity to give fishing a try, and I encourage you to join in the fun at one of the many free family fishing events taking place across the province.”

CAO/CLERK-TREASURER'S REPORT

Wishing everyone a safe and happy sesquicentennial Canada Day! The final tax bill for 2017 will be sent out soon. There are two installments on this bill, August 15 and October 15.

Interest is charged monthly on overdue balances, at a rate of 1.25%. With the education rate included, the total tax rate for 2017 is 0.01003154. The municipal portion of the rate is unchanged from 2016. With road work scheduled for Prince Lake Road this summer, and bridge work to be done on Gagnon Road, please be patient and watch for road delays and road closure signs. Of course, Prince Lake Road will not be closed completely but there will be times when you will need to plan your entrance and egress to and from Prince Lake as access will be limited or impossible at certain times of the day. On June 9th, we had a wonderful event, bringing the Lake Huron Bicycle Trail, the Lake Superior Water Trail, the Great Trail (Transcanada Trail) and Voyageur Trail together at the new Gros Cap Marina Park. The ribbon cutting was attended by several dignitaries, including the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, the Honourable Eleanor McMahon, MPP Michael Mantha & Chief Dean Sayers, of Batchewana First Nations. Watch for an even bigger party down at the park on August 26th. The Great Trail is generously sponsoring events across Canada to Canada 150 and the Great Trail. There will be demonstrations of our new universally accessible dock and guided hiking tours, among other activities. Planning is underway. If you have any suggestions, please call Sharmina at 705-779-2992 ext. 3. We expect work on the Festival and Events Pavilion to commence soon. This is another exciting project for the municipality. While construction is underway, we ask that you take extra care while in the municipal parking lot, particularly if you need to access the recycle

Friends of the Prince Township Library

ITEMS FOR SALE The Friends’ bookshelf near the library’s entrance includes shelves of retro items aimed at attracting collectors. These include an assortment of LP records (remember those?) that we’re selling for $0.25 each. We also have comic books in like-new condition at $0.50 each. Other summer reading material includes hardcover and paperback mysteries, some science fiction titles, and a few fantasies that sell for $1.00 or lower. It’s a good time to stock up on reading material for rainy days at camp without having to worry about overdue fines when you get back. NEXT FRIENDS MEETING: Our next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting on Friday, October 13 at noon in the library. We welcome new volunteers to come out and participate in our fundraising projects. In the meantime, we wish all Prince residents a happy, safe, and relaxing summer vacation.

Tips to Reduce Problem Bears

People are reminded to take the necessary steps to help avoid attracting bears into populated areas.

Garbage, outdoor grills and bird feed commonly attract black bears. Minimize your chances of attracting bears by:

Putting garbage out only on the morning of collection.

Storing garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids.

Frequently wash garbage cans, recycling containers and lids with a strong disinfectant.

Remove grease/food residue from BBQ grills including the grease cup, after each use.

Put away bird feeders and offer natural alternatives like flowers, nesting boxes and fresh water.

Often a bear is just passing through, and if it does not find a food source it will simply move on. For more information on what to do if you encounter a black bear on your property or while enjoying the outdoors, visit the MNR website at www.ontario.ca/bearwise. If a bear appears to be threatening, persistent or aggressive, call the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service immediately.

SUMMER SAFETY

Parents should review street-proofing with their children and remind them of the play safe rules for the summer, including:

Wearing all safety equipment, including a helmet when riding a bicycle.

Look all ways when crossing the street.

Educate your children about “who is a stranger.”

Teach children how to handle stranger encounters to increase their safety.

Maintain a ‘buddy system’ when playing or walking home, safety in numbers.

If spending more time on the Internet, cyber proof your children.

Parent should remain informed of events of your children’s everyday lives.

Never leave your children unattended around water.

Enjoy summer and above all be safe.

Are You Prepared?

Emergencies can strike anywhere, at any time. That’s why everyone in Ontario is encouraged to be prepared—by having a plan, assembling a survival kit, and by staying informed.

Page 6: NEWSLETTER WELCOME STUDENTSprincetwp.ca/files/Newsletters/2017/July Newsletter- 2017 full.pdf · CANADA DAY HOLIDAY A reminder to everyone that the Municipal Office will be closed

Build an Emergency Survival Kit Your emergency survival kit should have everything you and your family would need to be safe and take care of yourselves for at least three days immediately following an emergency.

The following list is broken down into the essentials, items you may need to meet your family’s unique needs, and items to have ready in case you must leave your home.

WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR SURVIVAL KIT

Essentials

Food (non-perishable and easy-to-prepare items, enough for 3 days) and a manual can opener

Bottled water (4 litres per person for each day)

Medication(s) Flashlight Radio (crank or battery-run) Extra batteries First-aid kit Candles and matches/lighter Hand sanitizer or moist towelettes Important papers (identification, contact

lists, copies of prescriptions, etc.) Extra car keys and cash Whistle (to attract attention, if needed) Zip-lock bag (to keep things dry) Garbage bags

Special Considerations

Items for babies and small children—diapers, formula, bottles, baby food, comfort items

Prescription medication Medical supplies and equipment Pet food and supplies

Any other items specific to your family’s needs

Extra Supplies for Evacuation

Clothes, shoes Sleeping bags or blankets Personal items (soap,

toothpaste, shampoo, comb, other toiletries)

Playing cards, travel games, other activities for children

Be Informed There are two main ways that you can be informed about emergencies: sign up for Ontario’s emergency alerts, and learn more about the hazards you can ace and how you can be prepared for them.

During an emergency, you should stay tuned to local news channels. Be sure to have a portable, battery-operated or crank radio in your survival kit in case of power outages.

Emergency Alerts Ontario’s three types of alerts—Red Alerts, Emergency Information Advisories and Tornado Warnings—quickly deliver information on threats or emergencies that have occurred via email, text message, RSS feed, and other channels. They usually include information on how to keep you and your family safe.

Tips for keeping your property and neighborhood safe

Lock it Lock your garage, your vehicles and your home - even when you are home. It may sound obvious, but many criminals will check to see if doors are unlocked, giving them an easy opportunity to strike. Also, whether you have a security system or a dog, put up signs warning people about both. If everything is locked up and criminals are faced with the prospect of additional deterrents, most will move on.

Secure it Install additional security locks on exterior doors and windows and don't forget about surveillance! When possible, install devices that permit sight to the other side, such as chain link fences, and keep shrubs and bushes trimmed below ground level windows and trees pruned above eye level to eliminate areas of potential concealment. Consider installing a security system as an additional deterrent.

Light it Turn on your lights! Use timers on your lights when you're away from your home or business so they appear occupied. At night, use outdoor lighting to enhance illumination in dark areas around your property where an intruder might hide, such as stairwells, alleys and hallways. Install motion lights and/or cameras at all entrances and turn your porch lights on at night.

Hide it Install and use blinds and curtains to prevent people from seeing inside your home, especially at night. Protect yourself, your belongings and your privacy with good quality window coverings. Consider frosted treatments on

garage windows, which will still allow in natural light, but prevent people from seeing inside your garage. And don't "hide" spare keys under a doormat or in a planter; keep them with a trusted neighbor or nearby business.

Remove it Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially a wallet or purse. Take any electronics, such as cell phones, tablets and laptops inside with you, including your remote garage door opener. In many cases, criminals will enter a vehicle for the sole purpose of stealing your garage door opener in hopes of gaining access to your garage and, subsequently, your home. Also, be cautious about placing boxes from big ticket items, such as a new television, out for recycling as this can be an invitation to thieves who now know exactly what's in your home.

Share it Introduce yourself to your neighbor’s, as neighbor’s who know each other watch out for one another. Get to know other people who live on your street. Consider setting up (or joining!) a page on social media for your subdivision as a way to communicate and share information with one another. But keep in mind you need to be cautious about what you share on social media sites - even if it's considered a friendly or helpful group. Divulging too much personal information can potentially put you and your property at risk, as there is no way to know or control the intentions of other social media group members.

Do not share or discuss personal information, such as upcoming vacations or when you, or other family members, will be away from your home, on social media. Advertising when you are going to be away from your property for an extended period of time is like hanging a "come on in" sign on your door for thieves. Personal information like this should only be shared with a trusted neighbor, friend or family member who can keep an eye on your property while you're away.

Report it See something suspicious? If it's an emergency or crime in progress, call 9-1-1.

Look who is making a come-back!

The third Wawa Goose will be unveiled at 12:00 noon on July 1, 2017. There will be cake, music and celebrating.
