Jae C. Shin, President & GrandmasterWorld Tang Soo Do Association, Inc.
Dear World Tang Soo Do members and families:
I would like to invite you to our 14th World Championship. This Championship is a very unique and historic event. First of all, 2012 is our 30th Anniversary celebration; secondly, we are planning a grand opening of our World Headquarter building.
As you know, the World Championship is not only a championship but a much more meaningful gathering. Not only meeting old friends and finding new ones, your participation demonstrates our unity and achievement together. This year we will have the grand opening of the World headquarters’ building, which has been the dream of ours, and over 9000 contributors, for the past two decades. Finally our dream has become a reality. I invite you to come and celebrate together. Also, I would like to honor 30 masters who have devoted themselves to the art of Tang Soo Do for the past 30 years plus. It is a very special dinner and I hope you can join us (see page 3 for details).
Because of the international nature of this event and this unique opportunity for all of us to convene as one, I strongly encourage all WTSDA members residing outside of the United States to complete their visa preparations as early as possible. In order to make sure you have an enough time to get the visa, you should apply as early as possible. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing each one of you there.
Tang Soo!

I wanted to share a story with you about perseverance and indomitable spirit that will inspire you to work harder, and strive for higher, not only in your Tang Soo Do training, but in life as well.
We all know that training in Tang Soo Do has many benefits mentally, physically and even spiritually. Most of us have personal testimonies of how training within the WTSDA has literally changed and enhanced our lives. On the flip side of that coin, if you have been training for any length of time, you would also agree that there have been many challenges that presented themselves along the way. Balancing our training with family, work schedules and other activities can be difficult. Some may have mental struggles or find that training is difficult because of age or nagging injuries. There are many reasons or even excuses that one could allow to derail their training. So what keeps us motivated to continue to train week after week, month after month, year after year and for some of us decade after decade? Here’s my reason: In the spring of 2008, while working as a School Resource Officer in one of our High Schools, I had the pleasure to meet
a young man that would challenge me to become not only a better instructor, but a better person. That young man’s name is Wesley Green, at the time a 15 year old sight impaired student.
I first met Wesley as he would walk with his cane, holding onto his aide as they traversed the hallways of Flint Southwestern Academy. I spoke with his aide and was informed that Wesley mostly stayed in his classroom and didn’t eat lunch with the other students. One day, as I saw Wesley approaching, I stepped out of my office and introduced myself. With a soft response that was barely audible, he told me his name. I then made Wesley my focus and would talk and joke with him every day. He seemed to enjoy the jokes. His aide told me that since I had been interacting with Wesley he was becoming more talkative, which is something that he normally didn’t do with anyone. One day I thought I’d ask Wesley if he might be interested in attending a free karate class. Not knowing how he would respond, I put it off for about a week. The following week, as was my routine, I intercepted Wesley in the hallway as he was headed to class. I told him that not only was I a police officer, but I was the owner of a Martial Arts school. I asked him if he might be interested in trying a free class. To my surprise he told me yes! My next statement surprised him, I said,
“you know that you’re blind and you probably won’t be able to do it.” His statement took me by surprise, Wesley said, “yes I can.” While standing there with Wesley I began to think about the many people (young and old) that I have spoken with over the years that would give excuses as to why they could not participate. Here was a kid that couldn’t see two inches in front of his face and his first response was “yes I can.” I was simultaneously honored and humbled. Later that day I contacted Wesley’s mother to introduced myself and share my plan, she was quick to let me know that she was all in. That free intro lesson has turned into Wesley receiving his Cho Dan Bo in September of 2011, and he is on pace to achieve his Cho Dan in the spring of 2012. As a green belt he was interviewed by a local TV station. When the interviewer asked Wesley what he hoped to accomplish at Double Dragon, he told her that he wanted to become a Black Belt Instructor. He challenged me to help him beyond just earning his Black Belt; he also wanted to help others achieve theirs. Wesley has travelled with Double Dragon to Regional Championships, Dan camps and Clinics, the World Championship in 2010, and the International CANUSA games in Canada. He is also on the S.T.A.R demo team that performs all over the city and county. He has also begun his student teaching where he co-teaches the beginners class every Thursday evening. Wesley is now 17 and has inspired his younger brother (Evan) to join. At the 12th annual Master’s Extravaganza Tournament held on October 1st of 2011 in Burton MI, Wesley succeeded in placing 2nd in sparring and 3rd in forms in a division of at least seven other excellent competitors. We have a wall in Double Dragon where we display our Black belt certificates. It says in bold captions: “Earn a Black Belt, make the wall. Be a Black Belt, stay on the wall.” Unlike many others before him, I have a feeling that Wesley will do both. So the next time we think about complaining or making excuses for the challenges we face in our training or in life, let us remember the lesson Wesley has taught us, YES WE CAN!

Is there really an obesity problem with our children? YES, YES, YES! Childhood obesity, according to the National Center for Chronic Disease, has more than tripled in the United States in the last 30 years.
How do I know if my child is obese? Go on line and find a BMI calculator for children. You will need their height and weight to input in the calculator. A BMI of 25 or above signifies obesity. What is the problem with our children having too much body fat? The health problems are many. There is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease including high cholesterol and/or blood pressure. High blood pressure stresses and enlarges the heart and causes kidney damage. Excess weight causes hepatic steatosis (fatty degeneration of the liver), gall bladder disease, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea and asthma. Aside from the physical maladies, obesity contributes to psychological problems, poor self esteem and social stigmatization. Statistics show that 80% of obese or over-weight children become obese adults. This increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoarthritis and cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). How are our children eating? In 2009 only 22.3% of high school students reported eating fruit and vegetables 5 or more times per day. (No, potato chips do not count as a veggie serving.) Only 39% of children 2 to 17 years of age ate the recommended amount of fiber. It is reported that 85% of females do not get enough calcium in their diet. From 1978 to 1998 soda consumption doubled in young women and tripled in young males. What else contributes to their obesity? Many children have a sedentary life. Studies state that on average, children spend 3 hours a day watching television or playing video games. Children are snacking on high calorie foods, meal portions too large, and we eat out (on foods high in fat, sugar and calories) several times a week. What are our children doing about their excess weight? Students who were polled reported that 10.6% do not eat breakfast, 4.0% vomited or used laxatives to lose weight and 5% used drugs and weight loss remedies to lose weight without the directive of a doctor. (One of my friends had a 13 year old daughter who died at school of a heart attack on the playground due to weight loss drugs.
Even her parents did not know she was taking them.) What can we do to help, watch the portions:
Avoid foods with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). According to the journal of Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior, the Princeton Department of Psychology and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, HFCS causes significant weight gain in mice and long term consumption increases body fat especially abdominal fat which in humans increases the risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X. According to the studies in the book Death By Supermarket by Nancy Deville obesity increase is directly proportional to the increase of HFCS in foods. Avoid Monosodium Glutimate (MSG). Scientists wanting to develop overweight mice for diabetes studies inject them with MSG. MSG is a neuro-excitotoxin which means that it excites brain cells to make food taste better and addicting. Check out the www.truthinlabling.org. MSG is in almost all fast and premade foods. For an interesting movie watch Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock. So what should we eat? Our bodies were created to eat, digest and metabolize real foods. By real foods I mean fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and meat, real sugars (raw honey, etc) and real dairy. Try to avoid whites…white flour, sugar, rice and potatoes. Eat out occasionally and avoid pre-made foods. Enjoy.

Another fantastic Region 7 event, our annual regional Championship took place on November 5th in Myrtle Beach, SC! Championships are always a great way for our
students to meet other students from within our region and make friends that they will see throughout their Tang Soo Do experience. This year, Grandmaster Shin was unable to attend and was greatly missed. All members of the World Tang Soo family are looking forward to seeing him at the 2012 World Championship in July and celebrating the opening of our new World Tang Soo Do Headquarters in Burlington, NC. BETTER IS BEST
Martial Arts training is a lot like school. One cannot just attend school and expect to learn, you will fail unless you do the work that is expected of you. Like school, in
World Tang Soo Do karate you have to practice in class with your teacher, but also practice at home. My dad has told me that “A job worth doing is a job worth doing well.” this idea can apply to Karate as well, if it is worth doing, then it is worth your best effort. Karate offers many positive learning experiences that help develop your character. One of the most important things taught in karate is sportsmanship. Students shake hands before and after a fight and learn to accept the judges rulings as final. Students are also encouraged to maintain self-control and not allow their emotions to show by getting angry and throwing their gear or getting angry over losing a fight.
Respect is a foundational characteristic taught throughout karate, from taking your shoes off before you enter the training area to bowing out when you finish your training. Students are expected to demonstrate respect to those in the studio as well as out of the studio. Students show respect by saying “Yes, ma’am,” or “Yes sir.” Perseverance is one of the seven tenets of World Tang Soo Do. This tenet is important because it trains us to not give up when things are challenging. Perseverance helps us push ourselves to our limit and then forces us to go further. Natural talent can only get you so far before effort and perseverance take you the rest of the way. Karate is good for cardiovascular health as well as muscle building. Each class begins with light calisthenics and stretches. As you advance in your Gup level, the calisthenics become harder and longer, building your strength and endurance. Having strong arms and legs are necessary to improve the power and precision of your techniques. Daily exercise and practice are required if you want to progress and to be eligible for your next Gup test. Students need to attend the three scheduled classes each week to receive training as well as practicing at home. It generally takes about four years to train and receive a black belt in the World Tang Soo Do Association. This daily commitment takes a disciplined will to reach the goal of a black belt. A popular saying that motivates me to excellence in karate is “Good, better, best; never let it rest, till your good is better and your better is best.” Every person should strive to be the best in whatever they are doing. When our instructors notice our best effort and compliment us, it makes us feel great and motivates us to keep doing our best, but it is also important to do our best even if no one notices the perfect form or great block, because eventually it will pay off in a better performance. The physical and mental aspects of karate training help prepare students for whatever challenges they may face in life. So until your better is best, keep pushing forward striving to be your best.

Tang Soo Do certainly has a great international spirit! Stefan Ewing and one of his best friends, Aaron Kaye, both sam dans, came to visit us in Sweden this summer before a tour of the
southern parts of Europe. During their visit Aaron taught a class for me at Göteborg Tang Soo Do on footwork in sparring and Stefan taught a class on flow drills and one steps (something it sounds like he picked up from Master Homschek in Region 22). My students loved every minute of it. During this visit, and before they went on their train tour, the three of us made a stop in Munich to visit and train with Master Trogemann, and for them to compete at the annual German Championship. Stefan (from Summers Martial Arts) and Aaron (from Northern Mountain Tang Soo Do and the Penn State Martial Arts Group) had signed up to compete in forms, weapons, sparring, and breaking, but inquired when we arrived as to whether they should do a creativity program as well. So, I asked Master Trogemann at the last minute if they could join in the fun and he said “sure, why not?” I told them they were to compete in the creativity program about 10 minutes before the competition. Stefan and Aaron had not prepared anything, but know each other well enough to just talk about it and then compete. Their demo consisted of among other things diagonal forms together, some scissor throws, some crazy breaks (lucky I had brought some extra wood!) and since they did not arrange music in advance they sang the Tang Soo Do anthem! What better music to compete by. This clearly involved a lot of on the spot fun and shows what a couple of World Tang Soo Do black belts can spontaneously achieve. All the creativity’s were excellent, but these two impressed the judges and won first place. They went on to have quite a day at the tournament winning first and second place in forms, weapons, and sparring and winning first and third in breaking. At the end, Aaron won the male black belt grand championship! Originally, I signed them up to compete, so they were listed as from Gothenburg Tang Soo Do (Region 11), but since they are really based in Regions 22 and 9, we decided to unofficially call them Team America! The name stuck and so did the impression they made on those around them. They made new friends it seemed all over. After the tournament, in typical German style, we went for food and beer. The German hospitality was simply fantastic.
These two fell in with a group from Croatia (some of which tested for Cho Dan Bo and Cho Dan the day before, so they were quite festive), along with some Tang Soo Do practitioners from Germany. They all had a fantastic time. What a way to end the tournament. The next day we trained and then drove to a location in downtown Munich allowing us to take a professional bike tour. After our tour, I headed back to Gothenburg and they went on to visit Prague, Vienna, Venice and Rome.
The students in my studio were impressed by these two from Team America and have made it clear they would welcome their return any time. They made a great impression on everyone they met as first-rate martial artists and respected ambassadors of Tang Soo Do!

During my 2011 visit to South Africa I was very pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with all of the
instructors in the country. Sah Bum Nim Veronica now has two schools, Sah Bum Nim Evandro has moved to a new location in Cape Town and reports an increase in his student population, and Sah Bum Nim Roberto has left his regular job to pursue Tang Soo Do full time. I had the opportunity to train on a weekly basis at Sah Bum Nim Roberto’s Pretoria School. It was summer time in South Africa and the school year was ending. Pretoria Tang Soo Do has been offering Little Dragon classes at a Nursery School and we were invited to their year-end banquet to do a demonstration. The Little Dragons were quite impressive! While there I also had the opportunity along with Sah Bum Nim Veronica to serve as examiners at a GupTest. That also gave me the opportunity to work with Veronica on advanced Hyungs.
I was also invited to a Japanese Karate School to teach a class on self-defense. The class went very well and I was graciously invited back to familiarize and teach Tang Soo Do at the school whenever I am in South Africa. Near the end of my stay I visited Cape Town and trained with Sah Bum Nim Evandro. Cape Town is a beautiful city,
and we trained in a public park. Students invited people in the park to work out with us, and they seemed to have a great deal of fun and interest in Tang Soo Do. Hopefully the Cape Town school will develop new students from the class. As always, the Tang Soo Do students in South Africa were extremely serious with a high degree of technical ability. I believe that the schools there will
continue to develop and flourish, and some day return to their former status as a country where Tang Soo Do is known as a prominent martial art.

LETTER FROM THE PASTDear Mr. Shin,I am so glad to hear from you and it is a privilege for your response. I would be honored to have you post my email for all to see. Those days were good ones. I will try to send a picture for you to remember me. You told my parents that I would never be a fighter. To some degree you were correct. I am not an aggressive person, but have learned not to shy away from a challenge and that is because of you. For that I thank you. I will be visiting the Philadelphia area soon and would like to visit you and your organization with your permission. I would like very much to be again a part of YOUR organization. Stephen Hengeli
Dear Mr. Hengeli,Yes, Steve I remember your name but can’t recall your face. It has been a long time. I am currently out of town, I cannot write longer. You take good care. I like your letter and if you permit, I can put your note in the newsletter for the entire organization to read. You are special and indeed my student. Thank you again God be with you all the time. J Shin
Dear Mr. Shin,I was blessed enough to be a student of yours in Trenton New Jersey (Lalor Street) in the 1970’s. I remember the first time I met you and the moment you awarded me my Black Belt. You were and still are a terrific inspiration to me. I have carried with me for many years the lessons you taught me. I would like to thank for all you did for me and would like to let you know that YOU made a difference in my life. You may not remember me and I don’t expect you to as there were many students you have taught over the years. I hope all is well and my deepest and most sincere respect to you. Thanks, Stephen Hengeli

Visiting Africa (Mozambique to be exact, was a thrill of a lifetime for me). I have been good friends with Master Alex Goule for about eleven years now, meeting at Master’s clinics, and at
the World Championships. Having the opportunity to visit him and witness what he has done to promote World Tang Soo Do, I have a new respect for his leadership as Director and for the role model he provides for the folks in Region 14. I was made to feel very welcome as soon as I arrived in Maputo on Tuesday, Aug 30th. On Thursday, I was privileged to be an observer to one of the best Black Belt exams I have ever witnessed. It was obvious all of the candidates had prepared, and were eager for the challenge. The spirit and camaraderie displayed there made my heart swell with pride for belonging to an Association that can produce such high quality martial artists. Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Master Goule held a seminar on judging for the Instructors and Black Belts in preparation for the Championship to be held the next day. After the seminar, we held a Black Belt Clinic covering the principals of Association One Steps, followed by some Hapkido Self-Defense. At 4:00 p.m. the Creativity & Kyuck Pa Competition was held at the competition hall with 5 teams competing. The Aderitos Team from Moztangsoodo 559, having a stellar performance, was chosen for 1st place winner. Saturday started with a Ki Gong session. I was honored to have Master Goule’s mother participate. In her 80’s, she performed the exercise well, and I believe truly enjoyed the experience. At 9:00 a.m. opening ceremonies started with a performance from this year’s creativity champions, followed by Black Belt demonstrations, and promotions. Ms. Veronica Amorim received her 4th Dan.
The tournament was run very efficiently and professionally. Before you knew it, it was time to present the champions with their Regional Cups for excellence. Family of the Year was the Mugabes Family. Male Grand Champion was Bo Sah Bum Nim Evandro Schwalbach and the Female Grand Champion remained unchanged, as there were no Senior Female Black Belt competitors. Later that evening, there was a Regional Black Belt Dinner. The food was great, and the conversation was very positive. Black Belt leaders from around Region 14 expressed their views for making their Region even better. I could feel excitement building about Tang Soo Do in Africa, and witnessed a genuine brotherhood forming between these fine people. The highlight of the evening for me was when it was unanimously agreed upon that, in the future, an award should be presented to an individual who, while working behind the scenes, has contributed in spirit, and in deed, the most to the Region and/or to the WTSDA. It struck me deeply when the name chosen for this prestigious award was “Adrian’s Dream,” after Master Adrian Blignaut. For those who do not know the story of this Instructor, he was a pioneer for Tang Soo Do in Africa. He sacrificed his time and energy motoring on his bike from place to place, sometimes traveling miles a week to spread Tang Soo Do throughout Region 14. He was tragically killed in an auto accident while on one of his TSD journeys. How fitting to have his name on the award for unselfish service.

This year’s Region 2 August Clinic was an absolute blast. A special thanks is given to Master Pacini for securing the
facilities. Much praise also to the new Regional Director for Region 2, Master Williamson. We wish him the best of luck in his new role. The actual clinic was preceded by our Black Belt Review, to ready the participants for our October test. Being at the review was a wonderful experience: the candidates poured their heart and soul into the work, and the room was alive with power. The group did very well overall, and we are looking forward to an excellent test come the first of October. The clinic started off with a few words from our instructors, and a brisk warm-up. We were then split into several rings, where every participant was able to get practice and insider tips for judging, score keeping, managing a ring, and even sparring
in a actual tournament. The masters were constantly moving throughout the floor, offering key advice and suggestions throughout the morning. After a quick break for lunch, we met back up for specialized classes. Though time was limited, everybody was able to attend several of the classes offered: Mrs. Lupe Thomas, Sam Dan taught sparring skills, Miss Sarah Roberts, Sam Dan taught ergonomic forms, Mr. Kent Thomas, Sam Dan taught Phillino stick fighting, Mr. Steven Thomas, Sam Dan taught jump kick skills, Miss Thomas, Sam Dan taught expanded one steps. Everyone was able to learn something new and that, perhaps was the greatest success of the day.

Whatever its origins, the black belt rank is often misunderstood in these times. Many people today believe that a black belt means mastery of an art or a state of completion in learning. In
this author’s experience, the most accomplished masters will say that they are still students themselves, and that there is always more to learn. Instead, specific meaning varies across styles, the dan rank almost always means that a student has demonstrated competence in an art’s fundamental techniques and is ready to begin more advanced training. This, at least, is the textbook meaning of black belt: accomplishment in the basics. However, attaining the rank of cho dan has a more personal meaning to me: it represents a homecoming to an art that has changed my life. My entry into the martial arts was not motivated by philosophy, but by anger and pain. A hurtful breakup in my college years pushed me to begin training with a friend who taught his own flavor of Jeet Kune Do, and taught it hard. My first lesson was to put on sparring gloves, and then to “keep me from kicking your [butt]!” Over the next year and a half I learned a lot about being fast and being tough, but precious little about technique. When I finished school, I left Pittsburgh and landed in the tutelage Mr. Tim Shawver. Their Tang Soo Do offered a robust framework with a teaching style that was appealing to my rough-and-tough roots, and became the first traditional martial art that I studied in earnest. Another year later, I moved again to pursue more schooling but, not wanting to abandon such a promising art, I transferred to continue studying Tang Soo Do with Master Robert Manculich. In chinese martial arts schools, there is often a bond within a school in which students refer to each other as “kungfu brothers.” This tradition dates back to the golden age of warrior monasteries, when many of the monks, having been left in the care of the temple when young, had no other family but those who shared the hardships of their rigorous training. When I began studying with Master Manculich, I quickly realized I had found a “kungfu father,” as he took me in and taught me as if I were his own son. Under his teaching, true to Tang Soo Do but influenced by Yang family Tai Chi, I learned the soft compliment to the hard training methods I had favored to date, and my practice became truly balanced. I learned how to relax my body and my mind, both in my practice for speed and endurance, and in my daily lift for health and wellness. It was during my years of training with the Manculich family (for I also owe much to Master Manculich’s son, Jude)
that my quest as a martial artist truly took shape, and as these teachers showed me how to take my Tang Soo Do out of the dojang and into my everyday life, I realized that Tang Soo Do doesn’t merely offer a path to self defense and fitness, but a way of continuous self-improvement. Through learning to relax my shoulders while practicing Pyung Ahn E Dan, I learned to relax my shoulders when I began to feel stressed at my job. Through learning to seek perfection while practicing line techniques, I learned to seek perfection in everything that I do. And, through learning to train without ego and to be compassionate to my fellow students, I learned to live without ego and with a compassionate heart. Tang Soo Do became the catalyst that lead me to study not only Eastern combat arts, but Eastern philosophies, meditation, and my full potential as a human being. Not long after attaining the rank of Cho Dan Bo, I received an offer for an exciting new job in Virginia Beach. The offer represented a significant step forward for my career and twice
my salary, but I very nearly turned it down to continue my Tang Soo Do training. After much deliberation, I left Pennsylvania and, without a WTSD school in my new home I decided to put my Tang Soo Do training on ice and branch out to other arts. Since then, I have again moved to advance my career and have studied several martial arts in earnest. While I have come to
love all arts for their unique strengths, none of them have yet offered me as robust and as full-featured of a system as Tang Soo Do. So, when I again had the chance to practice Tang Soo Do with the Manculich family, I jumped at it. What I have learned through the martial arts – valuing and guarding the three treasures of body, mind, and spirit – has too great a value to fix a price to. Unable to reimburse my teachers with money, the only way I can repay them is to share their teachings and spread their art. The practice and preparation to test for my black belt has truly felt like coming home to my kungfu father and to the art that has given me so much. And, as a requisite for becoming a teacher myself, it is an important step towards being able to give back to my teachers and to the art of Tang Soo Do.

WTSD Foundation NEWS WTSD Foundation NEWS
It was a Friday afternoon, (July 01, 2011) and time again, for the senior members of South African
Tang Soo Do to converge at the local Rustenburg blood bank. Luckily the members have iron constitutions and don’t faint at the sights of needles…well not anymore. Donators and non-donating members, who provide moral support and the much needed transport, got together for the 5th time to help the South African National Blood Donors Service in their campaign to replenish the needed blood supplies. The members of South African TSD train with all their heart to become heroes. Being a hero is in the blood of each and
every member. Knowing that Tang Soo Spirit incorporates so much more than only training, the students decided that they also wanted to help their local community. One of the ways in which they decided they could help fellow South Africans was by donating blood in order to help save lives. This is a tremendous gift if you consider that three lives can be saved with every unit of blood being donated. The amount of members donating each time steadily increases as more members join with a desire to help the community in which they function. In this way Tang Soo Do members also show what they are made of to those outside their training halls. The blood donation has now become a cemented part of South African TSD culture.

REGION 7Gift of GivingThe students of Palmetto Panther Martial Arts had an opportunity to experience the “gift of giving” this holiday season by adopting 8 residents of Generations Nursing Home in Batesburg. The parents and students of PPMA held a fundraiser to provide residents with the gifts requested on their “wish list.” On December 16th the students and parents went to Generations and delivered their gifts to each of the recipients. Everyone received everything they asked for and a little something extra for being “good” boys and girls. It was a pleasure to allow these kids the opportunity to experience the gift of giving during the holiday season. They were able to hear the stories of the old days, when receiving an apple or an orange was a great Christmas gift. We would like to thank the residents and staff of Generations for allowing us this opportunity. We would like to add a special thanks to April and Stacy Waters for their time and effort to accomplish this special event. Also to Tish Jeffcoat for bringing her excitement and Christmas spirit to everyone who was in attendance. Submitted by Palmetto Panther Martial Arts

Making A Commitment
As martial arts instructors, we are well aware of the meaning of commitment. We commit to studying, training, and teaching so that we can become the best
martial artists we can be and help others achieve the same goal. Through this commitment, we also gain the wonderful side effect of training ourselves and our students to become better people. Just like our physical side needs to constantly be ground and polished, so does our humanitarian side. We do this through commitment. In order to make achievements in our training, we had to dedicate time. Time is a precious commodity in most of our lives, but it is obviously clear that to be great at what we do there is no alternative to it. Community service is no different. By being consistent and persistent, we can develop creative opportunities for our schools to get involved in our communities.
Our school’s first service project came about through information from our church bulletin. We collected school items for World Vision, who then distributed the items nationally or internationally to children in need. We then added Toys for Tots to provide gifts for children at Christmas. Not long after, we added “Change for Change,” where we collected loose change for a month for a donation to Light of Life missions. We began our humanitarian service with well-known, publicized projects which made organizing donation drives much easier. However, there came a time when we decided that we wanted to focus more on our local community. Our first step to doing so was talking to our students and families; they were a wealth of information, and thus began our ability to become more creative with our projects. The majority of our students are children, and we wanted them to feel as though they took part in
the projects we were developing. To that end, we have limited projects involving monetary donations. Instead, we focus on projects where children can choose what kind of tangible item that they want to donate, thereby increasing the sense that they personally made a difference. Our youth students are so proud and happy to come to us with the items that they chose all by themselves. This August, we will be donating school lunch related non-perishable food items to a local food bank to coincide with “Back to School.” We have also been willing to work with our youth students who have service projects to complete. It is a great opportunity for these students to not only complete their projects but learn in a safe environment how to speak publicly; distribute information in a professional format; and organize events, donations, and people. This fall we will be mentoring one of our high school students on her senior project. The leadership skills these students will develop by heading community service projects now will be enormously beneficial to their future. By being consistent with our project time lines, our school has developed a great tradition. We have always held a community service project around Christmas. When we began hosting annual Christmas parties, it seemed only poetic to have all donations brought to the party and placed under the Christmas trees. Now, regardless of the organization to which we will be donating, we always place our donations under the Christmas trees. Not only is it visually beautiful, but the giving spirit seems to come alive. We wholeheartedly believe that instructing martial arts is only part of our job description. If we are able to apply our Tenets and Codes to our humanitarian service as well as our martial training, we will constantly be polishing our health, self-defense, and personal betterment. Providing opportunities for our students to learn and practice integrity, humility, sharing, and giving should have a place in our schools, and commitment is the first step.

JOIN OUR $1,000 DONOR’S CLUB!In January of 2005, the WTSDF Construction Committee began selling 1000 pillars. So far we have 265 pillars sold and 735 left to sell. Market trends for purchasing and building new properties has risen astronomically over the past few years and our original budget for construction, which was set in 1993, does not match the reality of actual costs in 2012. In
order to accelerate our fund raising, we established the $1,000 Donors Club. Anyone who wishes to join this effort should contact Headquarters or their local Building Fund Chair Person for the pledge form. Those who wish to purchase a pillar may pay in installments. If anyone has already donated a significant amount less than $1,000 and would like that
money applied towards a pillar, contact Headquarters with your donor #’s and dates and it can be applied to the pledge form. Keep in mind that the pillars are for individual contributions, not regional or studio contributions. We appreciate all of those who have joined in our efforts to date and will commemorate them with pillars in the new building.
World Tang Soo Do Foundation Newsletter...A Place To Shine!
For the last several years it has been my honor to function in editing and organizing the
foundation portion of the newsletter. In talking to many instructors and students around the WTSDA, I have heard of many community service events and activities that demonstrate Tang Soo Do dedication to family and community. I would be honored to feature your events in this newsletter. Please consider sending a brief article and some
pictures or any scholarship, community service or charity articles to me at [email protected]. Please share all your hard work with others in the association. You may inspire a similar project half way around the world!
