Raka te mauī , e raka te katau

A community can use all the skills of its people This week we have had a big focus on ensuring that the children behave in the way we, and you, expect them to. Maybe it’s been the weather but we have noticed quite a bit of "niggle” so we have been reminding children about ;

• doing as they are asked quickly and quietly • using manners • speaking pleasantly and politely • moving around the classroom in a respectful way • keeping cloakbays and classrooms tidy • being kind, caring and generous to classmates • following the rules when playing games • ways to cope when things don't go their way • putting sports equipment away

It is the little things that make a difference and we have noticed a big improvement from the start of the week. We would appreciate your support in reinforcing these messages of behaving positively at school. Hooray to James RF and Kyle S for making it through to the central swimming sports where they will compete against the best of the best in Christchurch. Good Luck boys!

We are delighted to advise that the Year 5 and 6 classes have the option of doing some free mountain bike training at school. The Christchurch Adventure Park have very kindly offered to come in and work with some children while their park is being fixed after the recent fire. It’s super having the support of a local business – giving back to the community – thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend – Go the Crusaders and we’ll see you at the Parent Maths Evening next Tuesday night at 7pm. Ngā mihi nui

The way your children are learning maths, is probably different than the way you learnt maths.

Last year we ran a parent information session, that shared how we teach maths and why we

teach the way we do.

We had a number of people who were disappointed they were unable to make it, so we would like to offer a

“What’s Happening In Maths?” parent evening again this year. What: What’s Happening in Maths? This will include:

• How we teach maths • How children learn • The importance of the messages we give our children • Some ideas for supporting your child with their maths • An opportunity to talk with others and ask questions

Where: Room 1, Hoon Hay School

When: 7pm, Tuesday 21 March

Parent Maths Evening

Next Week!

Try this at home

We love hearing about parents and children working together to solve maths problems. It’s a great opportunity to show persistence, spend time with your

child and help them develop a love of maths. Here’s another problem to try at home J

We hope you enjoyed solving our maths problem last week – Ms McArthur, the duck, corn and fox – with your child. Here’s another one you might like to try. Advance warning - your child may have seen this problem before.

Extensions • How many ways are there for the frogs to do this? • How many moves does it take? • What if the number of frogs kept increasing – five frogs on each side? Six frogs? • Are you noticing a pattern? • Could you use this pattern to predict how many moves for 20 frogs? • Could you use this pattern for any number of frogs?

What else do we get up to?

Congratulations to Kaylin J who received 3 first placings, 2 second placings and 1 third placing at the Garden City Tappers competition held at Mairehau High. What an amazing dancer you are Kaylin!

Eliza G is pictured with her medal from participating in the X-Games recently with

her Mum.

Well done to Eva P and Sam H who have been selected for the Canterbury Children’s Athletics team. They will be travelling to Dunedin to complete on 25 – 26 March. We wish them all the very best!

Don Pasquale Choir New Zealand Opera brought Donizetti’s comic opera "Don Pasquale" to Hillmorton High this week and some of our choir members went along to enjoy the performance. The opera was set in a NZ context and it was sung in English. It was hilarious and the students, parents, and teacher who attended absolutely loved the performance. What a great way to spend a cold, wet morning!

Term 1 Activity Fee Thank you to everyone who has already paid the Activity Fee for Term 1. Many of you have used the Kindo School Shop payment, and we hope you found this easy – it sure makes things easy for the office. Just remember that if you are finding the payment deadlines tight, please consider setting up an automatic payment to ease payments thoughout the year.
