Dear Parents and Carers

QAS4Schools Visit

Last week we were privileged to host a visit from triple Paralympic gold medallist Rick Pendleton.

Rick, who has competed in four Paralympic Games, representing Australia in the 100m

Breaststroke, was visiting the school as part of the Commonwealth Games initiative to promote

the Commonwealth Games and the benefits of physical activity. He spoke about his journey and

how he has benefited from healthy eating and lifestyle habits, from an early age.

Year 6 Transition to Secondary School - To help our students prepare for their journey into

Year 7 next year, they have been participating in a number of transition activities. Last week, a

group called Starfish, from Yourtown, who took the Year 6 students through a number of activities

to assist them coping emotionally. The presenter commented that our students presented

exceptionally well, with excellent behaviour and manners.

This week, on Wednesday, the Year 6 students have the opportunity to attend Deception Bay SHS

for an immersion day. There they will get to know the high school and learn the opportunities they

will have in Year 7 next year. We feel very excited to be working closely with our colleagues at

Deception Bay SHS for the benefit of our students.

Indigenous Parent Support Meeting - Tuesday 10 October - Next term, in week 2, we are

hosting an Indigenous Parent Support Meeting after school, from about 3.15-4.30. This is a great

opportunity to meet other families and discuss with the school your ideas about the cultural and

educational support that would benefit your children. Students are welcome to attend as well. We

will have a sausage sizzle and light refreshments.

Happy and safe holidays - I would like to thank the staff, students and parent community of

Deception Bay North SS for their welcoming support this term. I have very quickly come to learn

Deception Bay North SS is supported by a strong community of parents and teachers who work

hard for each other and most importantly work hard for the children of Deception Bay.

I am looking forward to continuing our work together in Term 4. Have a safe and happy holiday

and we will see you when school resumes on Tuesday, 3 October.

Kind Regards, Michael Hoey

Principal

Our Year 3 and 4 students had an opportunity to attend the Redcliffe Tennis Gala Day last week. Our students competed

against other schools in the district. The aim of the day was to develop sports skills, teamwork, co-operation, sportsmanship

and respect. The students had a lot of fun and got some great shots in!

During August and September the

Year 4’s participated in a Bike

Education Program run by the PCYC at Redcliffe. The students were

taught how to ride safely and correctly using the PCYC track. They

were also taught about how to maintain their bikes and learnt the

road rules using a simulated road centre. The students all had a great

day and the skills gained will be of great benefit to them as they ride

around their homes and to school.

Our year 6 students had the privilege to be part of a workshop organised by

Starship. The workshop was designed to help students to be able to identify their

emotional needs and recognise how to seek support in a new school

environment. It was fun, interactive and taught students skills for stressful moments such as exams,

assignments and life's ups and downs.

Each student was able to participate in:

Drumming Making a sensory bags

How to access support such as Kids HelpLine

A letter to self to remind students of what they have learnt

Drumbeat - Some of our Year 3 students were invited to participate in a Drumbeat program facilitated by Deception Bay Communities for Children. Drumbeat promotes

social understanding and peer connections through a team drumming experience. It is

fun, safe and creative and allowed students raise their self-esteem, work cooperatively with others and experience the therapeutic and recreational benefits of music. Asha Kumar, Guidance Officer

What a great turn out to our recent Community Breakfast. Our staff and

volunteers served up some delicious bacon, eggs and juice for breakfast. Thank you to everyone who helps to make these mornings possible. You are all

fantastic!

Congratulations to

our Book Week

Winners Children’s Book Week was celebrated

in the Library and the theme was

“Escape to Everywhere”.

Students were very creative in “Packing their Suitcase” to escape for a holiday.

Items ranged from clothing to toys, ipads, books and sunscreen depending on where

they were going. Most of the younger students packed for a holiday at the beach.

Students in 3B have been developing some practical life

skills by gardening in the school. We have researched

what plants grow at what times of the year, which

plants grow well together and then bought the seeds.

Students read the packets of seeds and then sowed

them according to the instructions on the packets. We

even used our maths skills by making trellises out of

wire and star pickets.

Students have learnt terms like digging over, sowing, mulching, weeding, and lots more.

We all have understood safe practices and all have earnt our tool licence!

This week we saw a great harvest and made signs for the sale of our produce. We sorted

and washed our vegetables ready for people to buy. We made $17 from the sale of our

Bok Choy, spinach, radishes, tomatoes and parsley. We hope to put this money towards

buying new equipment and seeds for the garden.

In Year five this term, we have been learning

about the scientific principles of light. We have learned about objects which are opaque,

transparent, and translucent, and how light reflects and refracts. Last week we used our new

knowledge to construct a maze in a shoebox and mirrors to reflect light from one side, around two

walls, and other the other side. There was a lot of excitement when we made it work, with some

of us adding in extra mirrors to challenge

ourselves. Ask us about our maze, and see if we

can remember how rainbows are made.

enjoyed a pizza party this week for their fantastic efforts. Thank you to everyone who

participated. The total amount of money raised was $735.55. Great Effort!

Issue 6 of Book Club will be back after the holidays.

The Father’s Day stall was very successful this year. Thanks to all that supported the stall

and we hope all the Dads, Grandads, Uncles, Brothers or Carers had a wonderful Father’s

Day.

Hello every one! Well we have had seven weeks of auditions for our 2017 Bay Idol competition. We have seen students

from years three to six take the stage and have the courage to share with us their various talents. We have seen

singing, dancing, drumming and belly dancing. I would like to thank my panel of judges that have helped me over the

past seven weeks to help us determine our top 3 contestants. I am proud to announce our top 3

performances are; Ava Thirkettle, Phoenix Murray, Aimie-Leigh Brooks, Brianna Grealy and Awe Te Haate.

Congratulations to our finalists, who will be performing for the top spot on Friday 15th September in the hall at 12pm.

I look forward to the polished performances of all our

Ideas to develop your child’s communication

skills over the holidays

From our Speech-Language Pathologist

Simon Says – Give your child directions that they need to listen to and follow (e.g. “Simon Says pat your

tummy” or “Simon Says touch your nose”). Your child should only follow the direction given when you

say Simon Says at the start of the direction. You can make this activity more difficult by giving two and

three step directions. This activity helps your child develop their ability to listen and follow directions.

I spy with my little eye… – Take turns with your child describing objects that you can see and guessing

the objects using the given clues. For example, “I spy with my little eye something that is tiny”. Clues

need to be given until the object is guessed. This activity helps to develop your child’s listening skills as

well as their vocabulary.

Categories – Ask your child to think of as many things as they can in different categories (e.g. things

that are red, creatures that live in the sea, things that are cold, things that can fly). Help your child out if

they find it difficult to think of things that belong in a category. This activity can help to develop your

child’s vocabulary.

Sharing books – When reading books with your child, there are many things that you can do to help

develop their listening and comprehension skills and their vocabulary;

- Look at the front cover of the book and talk about what the book might be about

- Talk about the pictures in the book

- Ask your child questions during the book (e.g. What is he doing? Why is he happy?)

- Ask your child to predict what will happen in the book (e.g. What do you think will happen next?)

- Ask them to do a story retell at the end of the book to check for understanding (e.g. Can you tell me the

story now?)

Books with repetition and rhyme are great for younger children because your child knows what comes

next and can join in.

Georgia Bolin – Speech Pathologist
