STATE OF EDUCATION in DAWSON SPRINGS The luncheon event, sponsored by the DS Rotary Club, was held Tues, Apr 19. Supt.
Whalen shared several positive statements concerning our local district. District enroll-
ment is up compared to the previous two school years, our Elementary is classified
Proficient/Progressing and our High School is classified as Distinguished. Our High
School has also been ranked 32nd on U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 Best High
Schools list. Additional speakers at the event included Dr. Deborah Cox, Interim Presi-
dent of MCC; Heather Roy and Dr. Susan Edington, both with Murray State University -
Madisonville Campus. A special award from the DS School District was presented to
Scott Dillingham, publisher of the DS Progress, thanking him for his coverage of our
schools.
MS CHEER TRY-OUTS A practice for students interested in trying out for Middle School Cheerleading is scheduled for Wednes-day, May 4, and Thursday, May 5, from 3:15 to 4:15 in the MPR. Tryouts will be on Wednesday, May 11th @ 3:15 in
the MPR. Students who do not have a sports physical on file with the school will need a parent present at both
practices and tryouts. If you have any questions please contact Coach Tracy Collins.
ELEMENTARY AWARDS Elementary Awards will be held on May 20th at 8am in the HS Gym. Awards will be presented for all A’s,
all A’s/B’s, attendance, academic team, etc. Individual classroom awards will be
awarded in each classroom. A sign-in station will be set up at the front doors of the gym.
All Visitors must sign in.
2016-17 APPLICATION FOR OUT OF DISTRICT STUDENT ADMISSION
An Out of District Application for Admission is required for all students living outside the Dawson Springs District. The district boundaries are the four bridges leading out of town.
A form is included on page 12 and must be submitted to the DS School Board Office by May 20 for the 2016-17
school year.
8th Grade Math Competition Madisonville Community College held the competition on Friday, April 16. Ethan Huddleston won first place from our
school and Zoe Howton was second. Other team members are Brennen Cunningham,
Emma Thorp, and Courtney Bayer. Congratulations to all!
EARTH DAY & SPRUCE UP DAWSON
SPRINGS (SUDS) Earth Day activities were held on our school campus the morning of Fri-
day, April 22. Our High School & Middle School students set up craft
projects and demonstrations for elementary students. Later in the day,
DSCS staff and students joined efforts with several community groups
and participated in the annual SUDS event to clean and beautify the
school campus and city.
5th Grade Math Competition The Fifth Grade Math team competed Friday, April
22, at Madisonville Community College. Members
are Jordan Opalek, Brooklyn Thompson, Tyler Hale,

Desiree Hunt. The team is
coached by Beth Dillingham.
3rd Grade Math Competition The 3rd grade Math Team competed April 22 at Madi-
