Introducing a new material: NewspaperWood

The layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree ...by designlabel Vij5 EN Every day, piles of news-papers are discarded and recycled into new paper.

During her study at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003, Mieke Meijer devised a solution to use this surplus of paper into a renewed material: Newspa-perWood.

NewspaperWood shows a reversing of a traditional pro-duction process; not from wood to paper, but the other way around. When a Newspa-perWood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resembles the aesthetic of real wood. The

material can be cut, milled and sanded and generally treated like any other type of wood.

NL Iedere dag worden er stapels kranten weggegooid en ger-ecycled tot nieuw papier. Mieke Meijer bedacht tijdens haar studie aan de Design Academy Eindhoven een manier om dit overschot aan papier op een andere manier te gebruiken en er een vernieuwend materiaal van te maken: KrantHout.

KrantHout laat krantenpa-pier, dat van hout gemaakt is, weer tot hout terugkeren. Het

resultaat heeft verrassend veel overeenkomsten met de eigenschappen van (massief) hout. Wanneer het KrantHout gezaagd wordt komen de ver-schillende lagen van het papier aan de oppervlakte. Van een afstand lijkt dit sprekend op houtnerven of jaarringen van een boom, maar wie beter kijkt kan hier en daar zelfs een letter ontdekken. Het materiaal kan gezaagd, gefreesd en geschuurd worden en is te behandelen als andere hout-soorten .

COLLABORATION TOGETHER WITH VIJ5EN Mieke and Vij5 (Arjan van Raadshooven & Anieke Bran-derhorst) first met in 2007. By discovering the Newspaper-Wood in Mieke’s portfolio, a collaboration between them originated quickly. After pre-senting NewspaperWood for the first time in 2008 at the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven (NL), Vij5 and Mieke continued developing the material and its production process in the past 2,5 years. Next to that they invited a group of talented young Dutch designers to experiment with Newspaper-Wood for a first product col-lection within the collection of Vij5.

NL De wegen van Mieke en Vij5 (Arjan van Raadshooven & Anieke Branderhorst) kruisten elkaar voor het eerst in 2007. Bij het zien van het KrantHout in het portfolio van Mieke was een samenwerking snel geboren. Mieke en Vij5 pre- senteerden het product voor het eerst samen tijdens de Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven in 2008. De afgelopen tweeën-half jaar hebben Mieke en Vij5 de ontwikkeling van het materiaal en het bijbehorende productieproces voortgezet. Daarnaast hebben de initia-tiefnemers een groep getalen-teerde Nederlandse ontwer-pers gevraagd om als eerste met het KrantHout te experi-menteren voor een product-collectie onder ontwerplabel Vij5 .

EN Breg was fascinated espe-cially by the indeterminable but distinct colour of the Newspa-perWood material.

To emphasize this quality he decided to incorporate News-paperWood into a piece of furniture by combining it with contrasting colours. This resulted in a series of distinc-tive cupboards, characterized by a sound and finely detailed construction.

by designlabel Vij5 EN NewspaperWood does not aim to be a large scale alterna-tive to wood, nor to use all paper waste into a new material. The main theme in the project is ‘upcycling’ with which we show how you can change a surplus of material into something more valuable by using it in another context.

Although printing techniques for newspapers are nowadays efficient enough to reduce the test prints and first unusable newspapers to a minimum, there still is enough material available. Next to that we use ‘yesterday’s newspaper’: the newspapers that are printed but not sold and will turn out to be old news the next day anyway .. a perfect local source for our basic material!

To actually upcycle the news-papers into our new wood-like material, we (temporarily) take

the newspapers out of the already existing and efficient cycle of paper-recycling. We think it would be ideal to be able to bring our own waste material back into the circle again. Therefore we use a glue to construct the material which is free of solvents and plastici-zers which would make it more difficult to recycle. With this it is not only possible to put our own sawing and sandpaper-ing waste back into the circle, but also to bring the Newspa-perWood products to the scrap yard for recycling, although we hope they will be cherished for a long time ...

NL KrantHout heeft niet als doel om een grootschalig alter-natief te worden voor hout of al het papierafval te hergebruiken in een nieuw materiaal. Het hoofdthema van het project is ‘upcycling’; we laten zien hoe een materiaaloverschot in iets

waardevollers toegepast kan worden door het binnen een andere context te gebruiken.

Ondanks het feit dat de huidige printtechnieken bij de krant zo efficient zijn dat proefprints en eerste onbruikbare exem-plaren tot een minimum worden beperkt, is er voor ons nog steeds voldoende basismate-riaal beschikbaar. Daarnaast gebruiken we de ‘krant-van-gisteren’ die niet is uitgedeeld en vandaag toch alweer oud nieuws is ... dit alles geeft ons een perfecte en lokale bron van basismateriaal!

Om het krantenpapier te ‘upcyclen’ tot KrantHout halen we het (tijdelijk) uit de bestaande cyclus van papier-recycling. Ons streven is om ook ons eigen restmateriaal weer terug in de cyclus te kunnen brengen. Daarom gebruiken we een lijm zonder oplosmiddelen en week-makers die het recyclen lastiger zouden maken. Hierdoor is het niet alleen mogelijk om ons eigen zaag- en schuurafval terug te brengen in de cyclus, maar kunnen de daadwerkelijke producten bij wijze van spreken ook met het papierafval worden afgevoerd, hoewel wij natuurlijk hopen dat ze voor een lange tijd zullen worden gekoesterd ....

Separate wooden parts and approximately 110 meters of rope result in the design of the stool ‘Wrapped’. By simply wrapping the rope around the construction is fixed, without

using glue or screws. Every product will be assembled by the designer himself in his workshop in the Nether-lands.

‘Wrapped’ is a translation of the word ‘Ingewikkeld’ in Dutch where it means both ‘wrapped’ and ‘complicated’ in one single word.

EN An obvious association with newspapers is the printing technique itself. It is a prerequisite for the existence of high-circulation newspapers. In a visual and suggestive style, Floris has reduced the atmosphere of printing presses and letter trays to a small cabinet. The cabinet can be opened in an unconventional way by a simple movement.

NL Een voor de hand liggende associatie met de krant is de druktechniek. Zonder deze techniek geen krant met grote oplage. Op een beeldende en suggererende manier heeft Floris de sfeer van drukpersen en letter-bakken teruggebracht tot een kastje. Met een eenvoudige beweging wordt het kastje op een onconventionele manier geopend.

How it all startedEN In the spring of 2003 I started my third module in the department ‘Atelier’ at the Design Academy Eindhoven. This department (which no longer exists) was different from all others: the classes took place in the middle of the workshop. Students who chose this direction were ‘makers’. Experimenting with materials was the basis for each assignment.

The assignment with the theme “wood” set me thinking. Wood is, in its smallest form, the basis of paper. Once turned into paper it does not come out of the paper recycling cycle anymore: it stays paper. I thought it would be nice to turn the process around and turn paper into wood again.

I had a stack of newspapers and started with the oldest newspaper. With a roller I glued the paper and rolled it as tightly as possible. Every day I spent two hours gluing the newspaper until the first paper “tree log” origi-nated.

The people in the workplace were not so amused, ‘If I could

quickly saw the tree log on the band saw?’ I think it had cost the academy a sawing blade but the result was beyond expectations: the material looked strong and was very nice to see! The few days remaining for the assign-ment I spent experimenting with the new material. It proved to have some surprising simi-larities with wood: it deformed, could be sandpapered, etc. I passed the assignment ... and the project ended up in a box in the closet.

designlabel Vij5Only in 2007 I met Arjan and Anieke of designlabel Vij5. When we were browsing through my portfolio, they noticed the News-paperWood project. They already knew of the existence of the material, but did not know it was my design, and wanted to dive into it immediately!

In 2008 we re-presented the material to the public during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven (NL). The response was over-whelming and in 2009 it was even nominated for the ‘Doen-materiaalprijs’ a Dutch award for the sustainable and innova-tive use of materials.

EN Christian combines technique and functionality with NewspaperWood: a reading light and newspaper holder all in one. The light switches on as soon as the rolled up newspaper is removed, allowing it to be read conveni-ently. When the newspaper has been put back into place, the light will switch off.

ProductionMeanwhile, behind the scenes, we steadily continued with the development of the material. To make the NewspaperWood into a producible material did not turned out to be so easy. From a manual process we had to improve to a less time-consuming and cost-efficient product. Step by step we got a little further along with the project, but with every solution we came across new problems. Sometimes this was very frus-trating and I am still impressed about the way Arjan and Anieke have persevered. I think that is their strength: to dust off and pick up a project and make it into a success, whatever it takes. If it had been up to me, I had given up a long time ago...

CollectionAt some point it was time to start thinking about making actual designs for the project! We had enough ideas already ourselves, but we thought it would be inter-esting to ask other designers to work with the material as well. In this way the possibilities and experiments with Newspaper-Wood would be examined in a wider range. Vij5 sent out an invi-tation with a lot of responses as result. From here we selected a group of talented young designers for a first collection.

We met regularly, had exciting brainstorms, exchanged ideas and discussed the designs of which the first prototypes are presented in Milan.

plaats. Studenten die kozen voor deze richting waren ‘makers’. Experimenteren met materialen vormde de basis voor iedere opdracht.

De opdracht met het thema ‘hout’ zette mij aan het denken. Hout in haar kleinste vorm is de basis voor papier. Eenmaal in de vorm van papier komt het echter niet meer terug uit de papierre-cyclingcyclus: het blijft papier. Ik bedacht dat het mooi zou zijn om van papier weer hout te kunnen maken.

Ik had een stapel kranten en begon met de oudste krant. Met een rollertje smeerde ik de krant in met lijm en rolde deze zo strak mogelijk op. Iedere dag besteedde ik twee uur aan het belijmen en oprollen van kranten en zo ontstond een papieren ‘stam’.

De werkplaatsbeheerders van de academie waren minder blij met mij: ‘Of ik de stam even mocht doorzagen op de lintzaag?’ Ik denk dat het de school een zaaglint gekost heeft maar het resultaat was boven verwacht-ing: het materiaal leek sterk en het was ook nog eens heel mooi! De paar dagen die nog restten voor de beoordeling besteedde ik aan experimenten met het nieuwe materiaal. Het bleek verrassend veel overeenkom-sten met hout te hebben: het trok krom, je kon het schuren, er verbindingen in maken etc. Ik haalde mijn module en… het project belandde in de kast.

ontwerplabel Vij5Pas in 2007 kwam ik in contact met Arjan en Anieke van ontwer-plabel Vij5. Bij het doorbladeren van mijn portfolio kwamen zij het KrantHout project tegen. Ze wisten van het bestaan van het materiaal, maar niet dat het van mij was. Ze wilden er meteen mee aan de slag!

In 2008 hebben we het materiaal

opnieuw gepresenteerd aan het publiek tijdens de Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. De reacties waren overweldigend en in 2009 werd KrantHout zelfs genomi-neerd voor de ‘Doen-materiaal-prijs’.

ProductieOndertussen gingen we achter de schermen gestaag door met de ontwikkeling van het materiaal. Het produceerbaar maken van KrantHout ging niet over één nacht ijs. Van een handmatig proces moesten we naar een minder arbeidsinten-sief en kostenefficiënt product.

Stapje voor stapje kwamen we daarin verder maar bij iedere oplossing stuitten we ook vaak weer op een nieuw probleem. Dat was soms erg frustrerend en ik vind het knap van Arjan en Anieke dat ze hebben volge-houden. Ik denk dat dat ook hun kracht is: projecten die in de kast

liggen te ‘verstoffen’ oppakken en koste wat het kost tot een succes maken. Als het aan mij had gelegen had ik al lang opgegeven …

CollectieOp een gegeven moment kon de stap naar ontwerpen gemaakt worden! We hadden zelf al ideeën, maar het leek ons ook leuk om andere ontwerpers met het materiaal te laten werken om zo de mogelijkheden met KrantHout breed te onderzoeken en te laten zien. Zo gezegd zo gedaan: Vij5 stuurde een uit-nodiging rond met vele reacties tot gevolg. Uiteindelijk is hier een geselecteerde groep ontwer-pers uit samengesteld. Regel-matig kwamen we bij elkaar om te brainstormen, ideeën uit te wisselen en ontwerpen te bespreken. De eerste prototypes worden in Milaan gepresen-teerd.

AboutMieke MeijerEN Graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006, Mieke works on self initiated and commissioned projects in her Eindhoven based workshop. Her ‘functional objects’ are the result of an ongoing investigation to the unperceived aesthetics of everyday life. No matter the startingpoint -from products we daily use to industrial machinery-, Mieke filters the essence and transforms ideas into designs that appeal to the imagination long term. The objects therefore keep their value. Due to the context from which her work originates, it has a narrative character. The story creates a bond between people and the objects. She doesn’t view herself as a storyteller though, but as a contextor (a constructor of context).

NL Mieke Meijer studeerde in 2006 af aan de Design Academy Eindhoven. Sindsdien werkt zij zowel aan zelf geïnitieerde projecten als aan projecten in opdracht vanuit haar werkplaats in Eindhoven.

Haar ‘ functionele objecten’ zijn het resultaat van een voort-durend onderzoek naar onopge-merkte esthetiek van alledaagse dingen. Wat het uitgangspunt ook is -van alledaags gebruiks-goed tot industriële installaties- Mieke Meijer filtert de essentie eruit en transformeert ideeën tot ontwerpen die langdurig tot de verbeelding spreken. Daarom behouden ze hun waarde.

Als gevolg van de context van waaruit haar werk ontstaat heeft het een verhalend karakter. Het verhaal creëert een band tussen mens en object. Ze ziet zichzelf daarentegen niet als een ver-halenverteller maar als een contexteur (constructeur van context) .

EN Vij5 is a Dutch designlabel, specialised in interior products characterized by simplicity and the use of existing elements. Its young founders Arjan van Raadshooven and Anieke Bran-derhorst design the majority of the product collection, but next to that they actively seek collaboration with other young designers to broaden their collection. Because Arjan and Anieke control all processes of each product from a design-er’s perspective, the brand has a very personal style and high quality standards.

NL Het Nederlandse ontwer-plabel Vij5 is gespecialiseerd in interieur producten die worden gekenmerkt door eenvoud en het gebruik van bestaande elementen. De jonge oprichters Arjan van Raadshooven en Anieke Bran-derhorst ontwerpen de basis van de productcollectie, maar daarnaast wordt er binnen het merk ook bewust samenwerk-ing gezocht met andere jonge ontwerpers om de collectie te verbreden. Doordat Arjan en Anieke ieder product vanuit een ontwerpers perspectief benaderen, heeft het merk een zeer persoonlijke stijl en hoge kwaliteitsnormen.

The project NewspaperWood is an initia-tive by the young Dutch designlabel Vij5 in addition to their product collection.

EN The newspaper: a report of facts and events, which can be decomposed into images and characters. For Newspaper-Wood, Greetje has zoomed in on these characters. She analysed the alphabet and simplified it into abstracted forms. Frag-mented, they now form drawer handles in a desk that facilitates working on an own history.

NL De krant: een verslag van feiten en gebeurtenissen, terug te brengen tot beelden en letters. Voor KrantHout heeft Greetje ingezoomd op deze letters. Zij analyseerde het alfabet en bracht het terug tot geabstraheerde vormen. Gefragmenteerd vormen zij de handgrepen van bureau-lades, waar aan het schrijven van een eigen geschiedenis gewerkt kan worden.

Each set consists of a series of puzzle tiles in 5 different shapes which makes it possible to make a square carpet, a rectangular carpet, a cornered layout, etc.The magnetic Wallpaper creates a patchwork of wallpaper on the wall. For this project, pieces of old ‘paper’ wallpaper have been glued to magnetic foil and therefore stick easily on a wall that has been treated with magnetic paint. The detailed relief and the special use of colors was what caught the attention of Vij5 .

EN rENs regards Newspaper-Wood as an archive made of characters, words, sentences and stories. The archiving, storage and filing of infor-mation is articulated in the design of their products as well as in the Newspaper-Wood material.

NL rENs ziet KrantHout als een archief van letters, woorden, zinnen en verhalen. Het archiveren, opslaan en opbergen van informatie komt zowel terug in de vormgeving van hun producten als in het materiaal KrantHout.

EN The Display Cabinet emerged from the drawers, being a characteristic element of a filing cabinet. The shape of the cabinet focuses on these drawers: placed in an open framework, a new func-tional space arises to store and simultaneously exhibit its content.

NL De Toonkast is ontstaan vanuit de laden, als kenmerk van een archiefkast. De vorm van de kast stelt deze laden centraal: geplaatst in een open kader ontstaat er een nieuwe bruikbare ruimte voor het opbergen en tegelijkertijd tonen van de inhoud.

EN Stories from one newspaper, one day, processed into one material. Embedded in brass, a small part of the archive becomes wearable as jewellery. Taking a closer look, characters or sometimes even words appear!
