Mark joined NHP in November 2006 as General Manager, Queensland before moving into the position of Executive General Manager, Automation in December 2009. Mark has been pivotal in developing and driving NHP’s demand creation and customer care strategies for the Automation business.

“Both Alex and Mark are fantastic additions to the Board and will add a fresh perspective on the many important areas of our business,” says Lloyd Thomas, Managing Director, CEO.

“I look forward to working closely with them and growing the NHP business to the benefit of both our customers and our staff”.

Congratulations to both Alex and Mark on their new appointments.

“Technology and Social Networking” – now central to business success

N E W S

As we look back on 2010 and pass the halfway mark of our financial year, we reflect on the last six months and make further plans for the crucial remainder of our financial year.

From an NHP perspective, our sales, calendar year to date, have been quite strong with promising signs of further growth. While this is in part due to our expanded Rockwell Automation activity, we have seen good growth from virtually all parts of our business. We saw some weakening in demand during September and October, which reflected the weakness shown in the September and October Australian manufacturing index. November picked up from where August left off which was pleasing. Interestingly, New Zealand has been quite strong for us all year. The challenges Australian manufacturers face with the Australian dollar being close to parity with the US dollar will continue to influence the immediate period ahead.

As is the case from a global perspective, we in Australia and New Zealand need to be somewhat ‘multi-geared’ so as to deal with the ‘multi speed’ economic conditions which confront us. Globally, each economy (many of which are Australasian trading partners) is continuing to perform differently. This unpredictability is still a cause for concern. We would be unwise to forget that the US economy is still the largest and wealthiest in the world and US industry still benefits from the world’s largest levels of intellectual property. It appears that the US is currently looking to rectify some of their international trade competiveness by printing money. China is another country forging ahead despite these uncertain economic times. By way of example, China currently has six of the world’s ten largest ports, a clear indication of the scale of Chinese international trade.

But as the world continues to change complexion in front of our eyes, it is important to be reminded that the future is always more important than the past. In the last 15 years alone, the world has become five and half times more information intensive, therefore it is not surprising that Google’s turnover last quarter was US $5.5 billion. The impact on technology and web access via blogs continues to remove some of the economic hurdles encountered by technology companies. In many ways it’s a new world with a lack of rules and a lack of structure. Clear evidence of this is that the web is very well organised and yet there is no control command and no single person in charge. Clearly the pace of change is made more rapid as the result of this. The future of technology products lies in design simplicity and intuitive usability.

Products, communications and indeed our business models will also not only need to be simple and intuitive but will also need to be transparent and interactive. With the right mind set and application, businesses may well be able to make use of what seems to be “messy social data” in a way which can yield a clear message.

We will all need to challenge what we do and how we do it and perhaps re-examine how to tackle tough problems.

At NHP we are currently in the process of releasing our social media strategy for the year ahead and have already utilised the likes of Facebook to engage with young engineers in the workforce (through our young engineers network group ‘EngSpace’).

Regardless of the quality of our technology and our social networking capabilities however, the talents of our staff will always be central to our success as a company. The future is largely in everyone’s hands.

Lloyd Thomas - Managing Director, CEO

Proving our ability to provide high quality and reliable project solutions across a variety of industry applications in differing environments, NHP has recently teamed up with leading global dairy supplier Fonterra in a project at their Cobden manufacturing site in Western Victoria.

Fonterra’s Australian business produces, distributes and markets ready-to-use dairy products. At Fonterra’s Cobden site, it manufactures butter and other spreads (including its Western Star range) as well as a range of milk powders.

With a dedication to quality that extends throughout all stages of the production process, Fonterra recently employed the help of NHP and their Katko stainless steel enclosure offering for an upgrade to their Cobden site.

Looking to replace their existing enclosed polycarbonate 3-phase isolators, Fonterra, after assessing similar products available in the market, decided to fit-out their Cobden facility with NHP’s high quality range of

Katko stainless steel enclosures. NHP’s Hugh Trewhella, Key Accounts - Automation, was instrumental in ensuring this product was suited to Fonterra’s requirements and, through his prior experience, was sure the NHP products and service package was the optimum solution.

“We were given the opportunity to supply a large number of units during a scheduled shutdown early last year and thankfully Katko were able to urgently air freight out the required units for immediate installation”, said Trewhella.

“The units have been in service since May 2010 and have probably already surpassed our expectations when compared to the previous orange polycarbonate enclosed isolators, which is a great result for Fonterra”, he continued.

The key features and benefits of NHP’s Katko stainless steel enclosed isolators include a high quality motor rated load break switch enclosed in 316 stainless steel, as well as a genuine IP66 rating. Given the circumstances at the processing plant, the rugged stainless

steel enclosure was perfectly suited to withstand impact, heat and many types of wash down chemicals, and the team at Fonterra have been very pleased with the results and improvements they are already experiencing from the Katko product.

“We met with various Fonterra maintenance staff to discuss the stainless units and get some feedback on how they were going,” said Gary Lee, NHP Product Manager - Control & Switching. “All of the feedback was extremely positive and the electricians were very happy with the large size of the enclosure itself, and the actual terminals on the isolator allowing easy access for wiring”.

Despite the initial hesitation in replacing the existing orange polycarbonate isolators due to the extra cost of the stainless steel, once the full capabilities and advantages became apparent, there was no doubting the Katko suitability.

“We employed the Katko stainless steel enclosure units as an alternative to the polycarbonate units in an effort to reduce the maintenance cost and downtime at our

Cobden facility - they have definitely proven that the additional cost is well worth it”, said Gary Henrikson, Fonterra plant maintenance electrician.

“Since these Katko units went in early last year we have not been called out to repair one unit which has been a great saving of both time and money”, he continued.

Overall, Randall Ferguson, the Fonterra Engineering and Maintenance Manager, along with his staff, were very impressed with the Katko stainless steel isolators and the NHP service, believing that the small additional outlay it was certainly money well spent in the long-term.

“They are still being evaluated for a little while longer and if at the end of this period we are still satisfied with the performance of the Katko isolators we will definitely advise other Fonterra sites of how this maintenance issue was resolved through the introduction of this high quality product”, he said.

NHP’s approach to sustainability acknowledges the direct link between effective management of our environment and our business success. We are committed to understanding and minimising any adverse impacts our operations and our products have on the environment.

Therefore we’ve made significant progress in the way we manage sustainability and have introduced some excellent initiatives that are bringing benefits to not only our own company, but our stakeholders, and to the environment.

One example is the imminent construction of a Sustainable Energy Solutions Display Centre - located adjacent to our existing National Manufacturing and Distribution Centre in Laverton, Melbourne.

Through this significant project, NHP is looking to become an industry leader in providing alternative energy solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial applications.

With the industrial electrical and automation industry experiencing significant growth in this important market, we recognise that it is essential for us to share our extensive knowledge base and educate the broader community about the technologies and products that are available to address customer requirements. This important development is a clear indication of our commitment to a more sustainable industry.

“This display centre is a considerable investment for NHP and represents our vision for the future. Our customer base has clearly communicated a desire to learn about sustainable energy solutions and this thirst for knowledge needs to be appeased”, said Alex Coslovich, NHP Director - Product Quality & Engineering.

The result of this desire to educate and develop innovative and sustainable solutions (combined with an expressed eagerness to learn from the customer), has seen NHP commission the construction of the Sustainable Energy Solutions Display Centre.

Construction began in November 2010 on a parcel of land approximately 400 m2 in size. Once completed, the interactive ‘live’ display centre will be suitable for use as a meeting and presentation facility, and also showcase a variety of sustainable energy technologies including:

• Horizontalaxiswindgenerators

• Photo-voltaicsolarcollectors

• Bio-dieselpowerco-generation

• Gridinteractivesystems

• Off-gridsystems

“It is hoped that this live and interactive display will demonstrate what is possible with sustainable energy technologies and encourage the use of these alternative solutions”, Coslovich continued.

These power generation systems will take the form of off-grid stand alone solutions and grid feed applications, complete with the capacity to provide live feeds to the NHP website so that it is possible to track operating efficiencies and generation outputs.

A wide variety of metering and switchgear protection options will also be on display, in addition to solar tracking systems and static displays on alternative energy sources.

NHP’s Sustainable Energy Solutions Display Centre will be open to the public (by appointment) in mid-to-late 2011.

NHP can now offer the latest extension to the Allen-Bradley kW range of the PowerFlex 750 series drives to the market, with the new Frame 8 PowerFlex 755.

This series is set to become the next generation project drive, offering the very latest in design and features that result in increased reliability, ease of installation, maintenance and repair. Its rack-able module system offers an easy way of replacing and maintaining modules, reducing the risks associated with lifting heavy modules of conventional design. The interface and communication options are exactly the same as the smaller 750 series drives making it familiar and easy to standardise on. The segregated cooling channel keeps contaminated cooling air away from control boards, and the drive also includes replaceable surge protection together with integral fast acting fuses. An additional option bay is possible, and NHP can offer tailored accessories like contactors, passive harmonic filters or reactors.

A new ‘Light Duty’ rating is available, which is perfectly suited to pump and fan loads where a short term (3 sec) high overload is not needed, so you are able to get the most out of your investment. NHP have once again combined with Rockwell Automation and their Allen-Bradley® product range to deliver the new 1607-XT ArmorPower On-Machine Power Supplies, providing 24 V DC directly where it is needed most on the machine, and further eliminating the need for a traditional enclosure.

Available in 50 W, 100 W and 200 W models and boasting the ability for the power supply to be taken out of the cabinet, these IP 67 rated power supplies will ensure significant savings in both panel space and wiring. Also adding to a commanding list of features and benefits is the advantage of minimised voltage drop, resulting from the avoidance of long wire runs and flexible positioning of the power supplies.

The ‘armor’ qualities of this power supply ensure that the product can be used in the most rugged and industrious environments, and to provide maximum resistance to

shock, vibration and humidity, all models are cleverly vacuum encapsulated in thermally conductive potting material to help pull heat away from sensitive electrical components.

The release of the new Allen-Bradley Bulletin 1607-XT ArmorPower On-Machine Power Supplies from NHP are particularly suited to being combined with Allen-Bradley’s On-MachineI/Odevicesincludingthe1732ArmorBlockI/O,the1738ArmorPointI/Oand1792ArmorBlockMaxumI/O,makingthem the perfect power supply solution.

The latest addition to the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix® family of controllers offered by NHP is the L73 controller, which has been designed for improved performance.

The L73 controller provides the memory, speed and processing capabilities to meet the demands of basic plant floor applications as well as high performance process and motion applications. This new controller uses the same programming software, network protocol and information capabilities as ControlLogix L6x controllers, providing a common control engine with a common development environment for all control disciplines.

The L73 processor provides improved performance across various applications such as process, motion and discrete applications. The L73 controller uses enhanced SDRAM memory technology withan8MBmemory.Theoptionalandremovable Secure Digital (SD) non-volatile

memory provides faster reads and writes, and better data integrity than the previous CompactFlash technology and is now rated for use in SIL 2 applications. The controller ships with an Energy Storage Module (ESM). The L73 also features an on-board display providing enhanced controller diagnostics and run-time information.

NHP is pleased to introduce a new range of Industrial Safety Fencing from ISF Pty Ltd, located in Melbourne. This is the latest addition to an extensive range of safety and machine guarding products already offered by NHP.

The ISF range of panels, posts, doors and accessories are designed to be modular in nature, meaning that parts will be able to beselectedfromthenewNHPPartB/PartR or ISF Catalogues without any design or engineering required by the end user. This allows ultimate ease in product selection, installation and any modifications and extensions if required after the install. The ISF range offers the following benefits over more traditional non-modular fencing offerings:

The high degree of flexibility offered by the ISF range, as well as locally held stock, enables the freedom to quickly establish a safe working environment at customer’s premises.

UNIQUE PRODUCTSThe ISF offering of sliding gates are unique in the Australian market. Floor and overhead tracks pose issues in fencing installations as they introduce tripping hazards into the environment. This innovative type of sliding gate is fully designed and built locally by ISF.

• Codedmagneticreedswitches

• Solenoidguardswitches
