CAREER

WAY

PLAIN TALK

With Mr. Pramod Naick

Many of us remain confused about what department to choose for our career. Various questions keep us occupied to select the right field in the industry. Regarding this we had a talk with Mr.Pramod Naick, our esteemed F&B faculty. Let’s see what he has counselled us with special emphasis on F&B DEPARTMENT.

CAREER, WHATS THAT: Tentative, perplexed, confused, ambitious, courageous ….. Those are some of the attributes that go with a 1st year student of B Sc in HHA. Why so? The course is definitely not recognized among the crème de la crème in scholarly circles. The society is still skeptical of the avenues opened up by doing this course and it is not a run of the mill, general stream of study…that’s why. Hence very often, if you ask a 1st year: “Did you expect this??” at the end of the 1st month at catering college, ”NO” is an emphatic reply. I guess the shock of being back in a school or a college that emphasizes on grooming, punctuality and discipline as the most important aspects of a student personality, takes at least a semester to assimilate and digest. The good news however, is that these very richly attributed students do mange to stick around mostly due to dreams nurtured and may be fostered by their seniors who by the way are often confused themselves…Thus, continues the cycle of passing on a baton of dreams, achievements and success which often is based on lack of counsel. WHAT IS THEN HOTEL MANAGEMENT

STUDY? WHERE DOES IT LEAD US? The study is about being good service personnel. Service implies the tertiary sector where we charge for the care and professional catering we provide. The service sector includes Airlines, Hotels, Call centres, Facility Management, Public Relations in the new age banks, Fast food retail chains, General Retail, Shipping to name a few. Prominent hotel recruiters, who visit IHM-B include TAJ, OBEROIS, HYATT, ITC, MARRIOTT, INTERCONTINENTAL, THE PARK etc. Food retail opportunities exist in PIZZA HUT, Mc DONALDS, DOMINOS, CAFÉ COFFEE DAY etc. General retail companies which recruit our candidates include ARVIND BRANDS, LIFESTYLE, BOSE, WILLS LIFESTYLE and banks that have come down to IHM-B campus include DCB and ICICI. The airlines sector uses IHM students mainly as cabin crew or as ground staff. JETS, KINGFISHER, QATAR AIRLINES and INDIAN AIRLINES have all come down to IHM-B for recruitment. Facilities Management majors who visit us are REGUS, JLL etc. Thus opportunities are not a problem but careers come at a premium. A career can never take off unless you suit the job. Lest you drop out, moment the initial euphoria subsides.

How do we choose a career then? Know yourself, understand your attributes, and match them with the demands of the jobs mentioned above. Zero down on what suits you, and most likely you would someday say, well, I gave it a shot…….…….…….…….and the REST IS HISTORY…GOOD LUCKGOOD LUCKGOOD LUCKGOOD LUCK.

My suggestion for the cruise line aspiring students, to first work in a good five-star property at least for 2 years to create a good experience. Because, just working for the sake of it doesn’t count, what counts is what you have learnt? Working and learning are different. I think even I am a learner till date. So, if you’ve worked for 2 years and then join the cruise lines, you can grab the opportunities better. Q. EXPERIENCE WITH IHMQ. EXPERIENCE WITH IHMQ. EXPERIENCE WITH IHMQ. INDEPENDENCE DAY

ANIMESH DANDRIYAL: After all the sweat and blood put in, after all the requesting and bulling done to raise fund to keep alive our movement, after shouting their throat sore to motivate people and make them believe in the movement, the dawn of 15th August saw the tricolor in the sky above IHM-B. It was an occasion to be proud of and we could see a gleam of patriotism in the eyes of budding professionals. As Chef Mukherjee unfurled the tricolor, the event was glorified by singing the National Anthem. A session of patriotic songs followed to salute all the martyrs, sing the tale of their sacrifice and to celebrate the freedom for which they laid down their lives. Mrs. Sreeja and Chef Mukherjee joined in to enhance the spirits of Independence Day. The celebration was ended by distribution of sweets to students and with the feeling that made us proud of what we are the realization of what we have to be in the coming years and to celebrate each day of our life as Indian.

FRESHER’S DAY

SWAPNIL MORE: All good things are for free .The truth in this statement became obvious when the turmoil over the venue for the fresher’s day ended at 301 .7th august was no ordinary day, it was a date etched on the memories of 200 ordinary students, as they became extra ordinary, as the IHMites.

Unlike every time, this year the competition was not about ‘Looks’ but Attitude, Style and Being a Survivor. The two who finally emerged as winners surviving all the cut-throat competitions were Pooja Bhave and Siddharth Tanwar.

TEACHER’S DAY We celebrated our teacher’s day with a lot of surprises. It was held at 301 [our college

auditorium]. All the students had put in lot of efforts to make it successful. The 3rd years were in charge of the kitchen, where they had prepared snacks and other starters for the staff during the function. We kick started our function by introducing each guest on to the dias and they were garlanded and given keepsakes as a token of love. Then we had one of the most funny and enjoyable show i.e. “KYA AAP 1st YEAR SE TEZ HAI” which was hosted by Rahul Shaw from 3rd year where each faculty member was asked some questions which were not related to their key department. The faculty played ‘Musical Chairs’ and we also had our college D.J Siddharth Suman from the 3rd Year who rocked and pumped up the spirits of the teachers and the students.

An a la carte lunch was served with an elaborate menu. On the whole both the teachers as well as students enjoyed!!!

If you think this was all the action then you are wrong. The real action was

seen in the line in front of our dining hall .The food was so delicious that it had us,

students tumbling over each other to get it.

One more page added to the glorious history of IHM.

WELCOME THE WARRIOR TO THE BATTLE FIELD.

Facts about Smoking

Hurting Yourself

• Smoking is an addiction. Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a drug that is addictive and can make it very hard, but not impossible, to quit.

• More than 400,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are from smoking-related illnesses. Smoking greatly increases your risk for lung cancer and many other cancers.

• It causes lots breathing problems and diseases. • It melts your bones. • It creates problems in your digestive system.

Hurting Others • Smoking harms not just the smoker, but also family members, co-workers, and others who breathe the

smoker's cigarette smoke, called secondhand smoke. • Among infants to 18 months of age, secondhand smoke is associated with as many as 300,000 cases of

bronchitis and pneumonia each year. • Secondhand smoke from a parent's cigarette increases a child's chances for middle ear problems, causes

coughing and wheezing, and worsens asthma conditions.

Quitting Tips • Getting Ready to Quit • Set a date for quitting. If possible, have a friend quit smoking with you. • Notice when and why you smoke. Try to find the things in your daily life that you often do while smoking

(such as drinking your morning cup of coffee or driving a car). • Change your smoking routines: Keep your cigarettes in a different place. Smoke with your other hand.

Don't do anything else when smoking. Think about how you feel when you smoke. • Smoke only in certain places, such as outdoors.

• When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water.

• Buy one pack of cigarettes at a time. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you don't like. • Fill cigarettes butt and ash in a bottle with some water in that, whenever you feel like smoking smell that

Staying Quit • Don't worry if you are sleepier or more short-tempered than usual; these feelings will pass. • Try to exercise-take walks or ride a bike. • Consider the positive things about quitting, such as how much you like yourself as a non-smoker, health

benefits for you and your family, and the example you set for others around you. A positive attitude will help you through the tough times.

• When you feel tense, try to keep busy, think about ways to solve the problem, tell yourself that smoking won't make it any better, and go do something else.

• Eat regular meals. Feeling hungry is sometimes mistaken for the desire to smoke.

• Start a money jar with the money you save by not buying cigarettes.

WHERE IS WHERE IS WHERE IS WHERE IS ““““OLDOLDOLDOLD””””???????????? There is no stopping good old music, they thought. Until the electricity supply went out and bailed them out. It happened one night when a retro session was in full swing. An eclectic middle age bunch of golden-oldies gathered at a flat that day and soon yesterday’s nostalgia-generating melodies hit the airways. The melodies were mixing up with the breeze. That was fine for almost everyone. The seniors in that apartment complex – retired old people – reached out to the relaxed, easy feel of the old hits .Things got out of hand when a few teenage students were allowed to bring their friends, young teenagers like IT professionals, BBM and HM students. He was having a DJ console and they started partying and playing hard house music on their high capacity amplifiers and speakers. “A big mistake”, sauce for the old goose isn’t always sauce for young gander. For soon, the building complex started to prepare for their sleep. But trouble started when the city fell silent and the loud music became prominent. Its raw energy and fast beats sent cold shivers up the neighborhood and got the street dogs howling.

Outside, the Nepali watchman clung to his Gita. Some residents plugged their ears with cotton wool or pulled pillows on their heads while a quick acting middle-aged lady raced to the police line only to find that son of a top cop was the part of the music party. Finally, it was unscheduled load shedding that brought matters to a grinding halt, and some order was restored. Downstairs the young crowd started giving halt to their systems and keeping them back into their vehicles. Even as the residents, the old watchman started to calm his nerves and get some shut-eye, the young DJ wondered “Dude, I just don’t get it. People just don’t seem to have respect for old music anymore.

SIDDHARTH SUMAN (III YR)

Boundaries I am at the temple gates, the temple bell rings, And the silence begins For him, He will never rest in peace. Memories of her smile. Piercing walls, Through his mind.. And a tear drop, Which never quite escapes his Eyes, A dried bunch of emotions, And crumbling situations in hands. Sitting in the last row by the aisle. Waiting for her to be brought in. He will know no peace, So he will embrace the pain. SIDDHARTH SUMAN (III yr)

Boulevard!! The road has a sharp turn ahead speaks my intuition Running Highway was interesting passion As I walk thorough IHM Bangalore. I wonder when I started the voyage Now I am half way through Gazing at sunsets Laughing at horizons Pondering over passing time Grudging of losing attendance Patiently waiting for His new indication Full of anticipation I reached at this shore Poignant it is, to sail ahead This is where my mind and heart fight Melee it is, when I reconcile Only to realize There is blessing in disguise. I had a smile when I came here Will leave that here to gain it back some where All I gain is love to work From all who believe work is love Ignited my mind to chain me through- -this circle of intellectuality How much so ever I try to escape- It is all, impossible pragmatically. Steady walk On urge of purge Let us make a change Get ready to run Its divine intervention To do and leave a mark, forever. DEVANK KAPOOR. (III yr)
