Chennai, 11 August 2016: First time in South India, a workshop, training & conference on “Next

generation ECT a latest innovative novel technology to cure Cancer tumours” was held today at

Chennai. The first of its kind was organised by Scandivian Meditech Pvt Ltd and co-organised by

Lakshmi Pain & Palliative Care Trust and Penn Nalam Cancer Centre Chennai. Leading Oncologists

across the nation attended this conclave.

Institute of Medical School, Sweden. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “The first clinical trials of

Electro chemotherapy (ECT) were performed in Paris on patients with head & neck squamous carcinoma.

It was shown that ECT treatment was well tolerated with no serious adverse events and with good anti-

tumoral effect. But it was in 2016, Chemotech launched IQWave™,, the second Generation ECT. The

First device supporting a new protocol specially designed for Head & Neck as well as the first generation

ESOPE protocol”.

Heading the panel discussion in the conference session, Dr. Anita Ramesh (Medical Oncologist),

HOD, Dept. of Medical Oncology, Saveetha Medical College, Chennai & CEO / Founder,

FREEDOM FROM CANCER and Relief Research Foundation said, “Electro chemotherapy is a

boon for patients’ with advanced, recurrent, inoperable, chemo and radio-resistant tumours for which thecurrent standard of cure is not responsive or refractive. With over 10 million new cancer cases each yearand over > 8 million deaths, there is a pressing need for alternative, safe and effective therapy and Electrochemotherapy fulfils this. With our body being electric, it makes sense to use electrical pulses to elicittherapeutic phenomena”.

She further said, “Electro chemotherapy is an effective option for skin cancers of the HN area and can be

considered a feasible alternative to standard treatments when such an alternative is appropriate. At one-

year follow-up, the percentages of overall and disease-free survival were 76% and 89%, respectively”.

Dr. Kalavathy Guruswamy, Head & Consultant Radiation Oncology, Pennalam Cancer Center, said

“Amidst the recent innovations in the advances of Medical Sciences both in the field of diagnosis and

treatment a procedure by name Electro chemotherapy (ECT) has been introduced. Innovated and widely

used in Italy and European countries the procedure is used to treat cancer patients with recurrent cancer

masses which can occur over a period of time after the completion of treatment of primary cancer”.

Dr. Asoke Chackalackal Mathew, Palliative Care Specialist said, “ ECT treatment as an Innovative

method in helping improving quality of life in Palliative care Patients. This innovative treatment

benefited remarkably in terms of improving the quality of life in them and their families”
