Monthly Oil Statistics

CHART 1

Indigenous production of crude oil, NGL and feedstocks by OECD Region

Total OECD indigenous production of crude oil, NGL and refinery feedstocks decreased by 8.4% in May 2020

compared to May 2019. This trend was driven by a decline of 11.0% y-o-y1 in the OECD Americas, where

output in the United States fell (-14.8% y-o-y) due to reduced demand for petroleum products and low crude

oil prices as the Covid-19 crisis continues. On the other hand, OECD Europe and OECD Asia Oceania

experienced increases of 10.1% and 1.0% on a year-on-year basis, respectively. In OECD Europe, Norway led

this growth (31.4% y-o-y1) as output from the Johan Sverdrup field continued to increase. Overall, total OECD

production grew by 3.1% on a year-to-date basis (y-t-d2).

Total OECD refinery gross output of total products decreased by 18.2% in May 2020 compared to May 2019.

This decline was mainly driven by declines in outputs of total gasoline (-24.0% y-o-y), total kerosene (-57.6% y-

o-y) and gas/diesel oil (-8.7% y-o-y). This pattern was observed across all OECD regions and for all products.

More specifically, the OECD Americas experienced the largest percent drop (-19.7% y-o-y).

Total OECD net deliveries of total products decreased by 22.0% y-o-y in May, mainly due to decreases in net

deliveries of total gasoline (-25.8% y-o-y), total kerosene (-65.6% y-o-y) and gas/diesel oil (-14.7% y-o-y). This

trend was again observed in all OECD regions, particularly in the OECD Americas, where net deliveries of total

gasoline and total kerosene fell by 24.5% y-o-y and 68.7% y-o-y, respectively. These decreases reflect the

continued reduction in vehicle usage and travel restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. LPG (-

14.0% y-o-y), residual fuel oil (-27.0% y-o-y) and other products (-6.2% y-o-y) also experienced considerable

decreases in total OECD, with only net deliveries of naphtha seeing a modest increase (+3.0% y-o-y).

Total OECD oil stock levels on national territory increased by 9818 kt in May 2020 compared to closing stock

levels in April 2020, and closed at 573 million metric tons. This stock build can be attributed to reduced

demand of oil products during the Covid-19 pandemic. Stock builds were observed in all OECD regions,

particularly in the OECD Americas (+ 5413 kt) and in OECD Europe (+3026 kt). The greatest stock build for the

total OECD was observed for middle distillates (+5385 kt), mainly due to a large increase in the United States

(+3712 kt) and Netherlands (+717 kt). While almost all products contributed to this overall stock build, total

gasoline experienced a stock draw (-1033kt).

Austria Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available

preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication.

Canada As of January 2019, Canadian data includes outputs of secondary products from bitumen upgraders. These are

reported under “from other sources” under other hydrocarbons, and in “primary product receipts” for refinery

gas, gas/diesel oil and petroleum coke.

There in a break in series between December 2018 and January 2019 as the Canadian Administration launched

a new Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey in the beginning of 2019. The survey includes greater

coverage of all products.

The Canadian Administration includes condensates and pentanes plus under crude oil.

Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan),

based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various

other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan,

based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three

months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics

Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat.

Chile The most recent data on inland deliveries for Chile are preliminary. This data are updated within two months

following the first publication.

Finland Starting from August 2019, information on international marine bunkers are not available but included in the

“Gross inland deliveries obs.” of total fuel oil and gas/diesel due to confidentiality reasons.

France French data includes the overseas departments (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and

Reunion).

Israel The stocks level information is not available at this time.

The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. The

use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Israeli

settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law.The trade breakdown information is not available at this time.

Petroleum coke is included by Israeli Administration in the amounts of other petroleum products.

Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central

Bureau of Statistics.



NOTES

Mexico Starting from January 2018, reporting of LPG imports and deliveries is based on a more comprehensive

coverage of the market.

United States The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) excludes crude oil lease stocks (crude oil stocks held at
