Dear Parents, What a fantastic event! The North Fremantle Cup, organized by the P&C for us all last Friday night, was a hoot! After I got over the fact that my name for the night was “The Big Kahoona Kelly” and that the school staff and I were to be auctioned off as horses for the final event of the night, I decided not to sneak out quietly but relaxed and joined in a whole heap-of-fun with some wonderful parents, friends and staff of North Fremantle Primary. The P&C put in a huge amount of effort gathering prizes from local businesses; decorating the hall and planning the racing events. This commitment to detail is what made the night such a huge event. I would like to thank all the members of the P&C and in particular Shani and Gary Hasler, and Andrew Maiorana (a friend and past parent of North) who ran the proceedings on the night. The North Fremantle Cup raised $3500, a great boost to the P&C finances and an outstanding effort for our small school community. A small school with a big heart. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. It is with much excitement that I inform you that North Fremantle Primary School, with thanks to the huge efforts of Jenny Pavicic and Margie Campbell, has been successful in winning a grant of $30 000 for the employment of an Artist in Residence for 2011. Our artist is a well known Fremantle puppeteer, Sandy McKendrick, who has worked extensively in Australia and overseas. Over a period of two terms the students of the school and members of the community will work together to create a larger than life festival style puppet performance on the foreshore of the Swan River in North Fremantle. Our theme for this fantastic project will be Under the Water in North Fremantle. We are certainly very excited, privileged and looking forward to this wonderful venture.

For many years Stan Whipp has been an integral part of the team of gentleman that make the facilities at Gil Fraser Oval function so well. Stan and his team provide the link between our school, the hall, oval and North Fremantle Football Club. Over many years Stan has been extremely generous with his commitment and time for our students. It is with much sadness that I inform you of his passing this week. Stan will be greatly missed by the families and particularly the students of North Fremantle PS. We would like to pass on our deepest sympathy to his wife Gloria and family.

NORTH FREMANTLE KITE MAKERS All students from Pre-Primary to Year 7 were lucky to have participated in a kite making workshop with the very talented Kitemaker Michael Alvares. Michael has been making, flying, teaching about and sharing his passion for kites as his profession for the last 27 years. He showed the students an incredible variety of kites from around the world and explained a brief history of Kite flying. The aim of this kite making afternoon was to provide all the children with a kite so they may attend the kite festival at South Beach on Saturday 6th November from 12 noon till 4 pm. It would be great to see as many students as possible participating.

NORTH FREMANTLE BOWLING CLUB ART EXHIBITION The students of North Fremantle Primary have been invited to display their artwork at an exhibition of North Fremantle Artists being held at the North Fremantle Bowling Club on Sunday the 7th November from 1pm. The students have been working on black and white block prints to display at this exhibition. The club has asked me to organise a roster of students or parents who could do some face painting for the children. I have made up a roster of 30 minute blocks from 1pm. No experience or skill is necessary this is just some fun for the children. If you would be kind enough to support with this please call Margie 0n 0412461100. Students should learn to see mental arithmetic as the first resort when they need to calculate. Mental

computation refers to doing calculations “in your head” and involves much more than recall of basic facts. It is not

always quicker than written computation. If students develop the idea that “mental” should be quick and obvious, they may be reluctant to try to do

calculations in their head.

Mental methods are usually different from written methods and students

rarely get better at mental computation from practising written computation.

The best mental methods help us to store the bits of calculation in our heads

as we go along. As children proceed through the primary years they should

develop an increasing repertoire of mental strategies to assist in calculating

and estimating mentally – initially with whole numbers and later with money and simple

CRICKET WORKSHOP

Room Two—Mrs Jillian Pierce Last Friday the children were involved in a unique kite-making experience. After making some wonderful kites, the children took advantage of the gusty conditions and discovered that their kites could actually fly! Swimming has been and gone for another year and, whilst the children have really enjoyed and benefited from their lessons, we are looking forward to returning to classroom routines on Monday. Room Three - Ms Bev Lane Cricket, by Lini Last Thursday we had cricket. The person told us how to catch, then we had to turn around and catch the ball. Then we did batting. You had to put the ball on the cone, hit it past the people to get a four. It was fun. Kite Man, by Mitchal A few days ago we had the kite incursion. We saw new kites like the box kite and the Indian kite. We also made a kite and we got to chase a kite. The most fun thing was flying our kite. It was very windy—perfect weather. After that we walked back to school. Everybody was talking about it until Monday. It was very awesome and fun. I hope he comes back. Swimming, by Jimmy Hi it’s Jimmy you can call me Jim. A few weeks or months have passed since we started swimming. I am the second smallest in the class, but that is just the bad side. On the good side things are going great. I am only level four in swimming but I am the king of the spellers in class. I like swimming because it is very active and very fun. I do free style sometimes. I mostly like everything. That is all I have to say for now. Room Five – Rosie Russell Room Five is happy that the warmer weather is here! It has been great going to the pool everyday for swimming lessons. We are still learning about Natural Disasters and can’t believe there were reports of an earthquake, tsunami, volcano eruption and tornado in the news last week. We’re looking at wild weather next week so fingers crossed we will only be studying it from books!

KIDS FITNESS CLASSES Have your kids spent a little too much time indoors lately? Would you like them to enjoy exercising from an early age? For the duration of Term 4, Fitness Results North Fremantle is offering kids fitness class. Under instruction of a fully qualified personal trainer, your children will have fun and get fit at the same time, whilst improving their strength and co-ordination throughout the 10 week program. Last Friday Nights P & C Fundraiser, the North Freo Cup was a huge success. After slow door sales we managed to get a very lively crowd who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and really got into the spirit of the night. We raised $3500 from the generous attendees which will go towards much needed funds for the school. Thanks to Gary Hasler and his friend Mully for the MC duties, Leanne Magee for all the decorations, Renee Noack for the production of the tickets, Matt Kronberger for the awesome artwork, the other P & C committee members who helped set up and on the night and of course our generous sponsors who donated all the prizes. Thank you!
