Chilli Chicken Enchiladas4 large flour tortilla wrapsFor the filling2 tbsp olive oil400g chicken breast - sliced into strips1 red pepper - sliced1 onion - halved & sliced2 garlic cloves - finely chopped2 red chillies - finely choppedsalt & pepperFor the sauce5 tbsp passata1 tbsp white wine vinegar2 tbsp oyster sauce2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce2 tsp sugar1 tsp ground cumin1 tsp oreganotabasco sauce to tastesalt & pepper

It’s a Wrap!At around £1 for a pack of 8, wraps are a regular on my shopping list. As well as an alternative to bread for pack-ups they can be used for some delicious hot family meals and snacks. Here are some of my kids favourites...

Chorizo & Cheese Quesadillas4 large flour tortilla wraps2 tbsp olive oilFor the filling2 tbsp tomato ketchup150g grated red leicester cheese16 slices chorizoMethodSpread the ketchup over two of the wraps, place 8 slices of chorizo on top and cover both wraps with cheese, then place the other wrap on top so you have two large round sandwiches. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large non stick frying pan, when hot, add one of the quesadillas. Fry for a couple of minutes til golden, using a fish slice flip and fry for a couple of mins on the other side. Add the other tbsp oil and repeat with the other quesadilla. Remove, slice and enjoy!

SamosasMaking samosas out of flour tortillas couldn’t be easier. The 7” size works best. A pack of 10 wraps will make 20 samosas. Before you start, make some glue out of 1tbsp flour mixed with 2tbsp water. Use this to stick the edges down. When you are ready warm the wraps up for 10 secs in the microwave (2 at a time is fine). When pliable - cut each in half. Using your finger put some glue down the flat side and wrap into a cone shape. Press the seam to make sure they are stuck. Spoon in your favourite filling leaving enough room at the top to seal with the glue. Now you can brush with oil and bake on a tray in the oven (200˚C) for 10 mins. Or you can shallow fry for a couple of minutes each side until golden brown. There are loads of different fillings you could use: traditional spicy potato and pea, beans and cheese, spicy rice and mince, even chocolate buttons and sliced banana!!

For the topping150g cheddar - grated2 tbsp sour cream (optional)MethodHeat oven to 180°C. Grease a square oven proof dish. Make the filling first. Heat the oil in a large pan, cook chicken, remove with slotted spoon & place to one side. Fry peppers, onion, garlic & chillies until just cooked (add more oil if necessary). Put chicken back into the pan and season to taste. Now make the sauce. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and heat gently for 10 mins. Check seasoning and adjust accordingly. Now to put it all together...add 3 tbsp of sauce to the chilli chicken mix, spread 2 tbsp of sauce on the bottom of the dish. Warm the tortillas up to make them easier to handle. Split the filling between the 4 wraps. Place the filling in the middle of the wrap, sprinke a bit of cheese on, tuck the sides in and roll up. Place the four wraps in the oven proof dish. Use the rest of the sauce to cover the wraps, dot the sour cream over and sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for 20 mins until golden and sizzling.

The Waggon and Horses on Mansfield Road is a lovely traditional pub - and when we heard they had launched a new menu we decided it would be the perfect venue to have a working lunch!

What makes the Waggon stand out from the crowd is that when they say homemade or handmade on the menu they genuinely mean it.

Homemade pie of the day was outstanding and only £5.99. The handmade burger with bacon and cheddar was a real belly buster and amazing value at £5.65. The specials board was crammed with lovely

sounding dishes. We tried the thai fishcakes and they were very, very good. The Waggon’s homemade chips are legendary. You will not get a better chip this side of Nottingham!

Landlord Mick was keen to tell us all about their steak night every Thursday. Locally sourced 28 day matured steaks - and a fantastic offer of two 8oz rump steaks and a bottle of wine for £19.99.

I think it is also worth mentioning the kids menu - only £1.95 per meal. How good is that?

It was a great lunch, although I think we spent more time chatting about the delicious food than we did about work!

Food served - Mon - Thur - 12 - 2.30pm & 5 - 8pm

Fri - Sat: noon til 6pm ~ Sun: noon til 4pm

Le Bistrot Pierre has an excellent reputation as a leader

in authentic French cuisine, providing exceptional dining

experiences. The splendid, homemade cuisine, offered

by multi award-winning Le Bistrot Pierre restaurants,

is complemented by a wide range of impressive wines,

spirits and other beverages. Established in 1994, Le Bistrot

Pierre quickly gained its justly-deserved reputation for

high-quality food, beverages and service.

With the brand refurbishing and being warmly greeted

by Paul, General Manager, Nottingham, observation of the

transformation was most impressive, now with an upstairs

area, too. Le Bistrot Pierre has created really popular

dining, focusing on French cuisine and offers great value

for money. Two and three course lunches (£10.95 and

£12.95 respectively) have ample selections. Evening menus

include Prix Fixe, À La Carte and Dine With Wine, where

each selection for every course is paired with a different

wine. Two courses are priced at £22.95 and three courses

£27.95. Soirée Gastronomique, a 6 course Set Dinner for

£22.95, is extremely popular, also.

Just answer the following question:What year was Le Bistrot Pierre established?

Page 28: NG5 Arnold April-May 2014

There has been a settlement in what we now know as Arnold for a very long time. The Doomsday Book of 1086 records a village with a population of about 150 people. This would be about 30 extended families. Everyone knew each other and the village was, although quite large for its time, small enough to not need anything but a name. Houses were called by the owners first name and that was all that was required. Ernhale, as the village was then called, started to grow and eventually as it became the village of Arnold there were lots more houses and more than one street. Areas and streets were still called after the inhabitants, or by nick names or local features. These names changed as people moved so that the early census’ of 1841, 51 and 61 often had addresses that no longer exist. For this reason it is often difficult to trace exactly where some addresses were situated. This problem continued until roads had signs. Spout Lane in Arnold, named after the water spout or spring that was situated there, was renamed Coppice Road. Broadmere Lane, named after the water soaked land at the eastern end, was renamed St Albans Road after the Duke of St Albans who owned the land. It is also where Duke Street got it’s name.

Brookfield Road was formally called Washpen Lane after the sheep washing pen situated there. Cross Street was Whitehart Lane as it lead from Arnold to the White Hart on Mansfield Road.

Some streets had names that would not be popular today. Surgeys Lane was formally Broadass Lane and Dead Moor Close has now disappeared altogether.

Most villages had a Front Street where the entrance to the houses were and a Back Street that ran parallel to it, to allow access to the back of the houses and fields beyond. What we now call High Street was then called Back Street for just this reason though why it was renamed High Street

(another name for the main street ) is a mystery, as Front Street not High Street provides this function.

Front Street or at least parts of it have also had different names; Church Street, Main Street and Top of the Town.

Nottingham Road was the road to Nottingham but was also known as Folly Street. It was named after the very large mill that was built on Arnot Hill park in the 18th century. When the mill closed in 1810 it was too big for anyone to buy. It was broken up for the stones and became known as the Folly.

Some streets were named after people connected with the land on which they were built. Worrall Avenue is named after John Worrall, a builder and local business man who lived in the house on the corner (now the building society). Worrall gave the land for the Methodist Church and built the first few houses so it was called Worrall’s Street and changed to Worrall Avenue when the trees were planted and other houses were built.

These days streets are named by local councils. For example Ramsay Drive and the surrounding estate were named after the 1966 World Cup team. These names have no connection with Arnold. The old street names derived from the local community and tell a lot more about the history of the area. What was wrong with the old names and local connections you may ask?

That by any other Name by Bob Massey

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: [email protected] or post via NG5 magazine. www.arnold-history-group.org

Business Spotlight....

B & P PavingName of business: B & P Paving

Your Names: Nick Bealing (pictured right) and Chris Pemberton (pictured left)

How did you first get into your line of work? After leaving school in 2000, I found work at a very well established and respected company learning every aspect of block paving with my business partner Chris. Chris then went into surveying and I got qualified in brick laying before we started our own company, B&P Paving.

How did you get to where you are now? Through hard work, perseverance, and by combining our experience and skills. We believe through this combination we have become one of the most skilled teams in Nottingham offering a quality product at a competitive price. There’s too many out of work builders and jobbers in the industry at the minute, that’s why we specialise only in block paving, patios, fencing and garden brickwork to insure quality in our work.

What are your plans for the next two years? To grow our business. We’ve won awards for our work in Nottingham and we believe that by combining our quality of work with great prices we can continue to expand the business as it has been doing for the last 6 years. We rely on recommendation above all else so happy customers is the only way this is going to happen

How have you found advertising in ng magazines? NG magazines has been a great out let for our company to advertise. People like to know that the companies they use are local and can be trusted. People need to stay away from door knockers and jobbing builders and use great trusted local companies, as supporting local business is what’s going to keep prices down and the market fair.

What did you want to be when you were growing up and would you still like to be that now? I don’t think I knew what I wanted to be when I was at school, but I’m more than happy with what I do now. I think I always knew I’d like to be self-employed from an early age though.

What three things would you like to do if you had the time and money? Travel, spend more time with my family and I suppose a couple of weeks a year in the sun wouldn’t hurt !

A Nottingham subscription library is opening up its private walled garden to the public on Saturday 24th May to support Alzheimer’s Society during Dementia Awareness Week.

The Bromley House Library Open Garden Event will take place on Saturday 24th May from 1pm- 4pm. Entrance is £2 per person. Cake and refreshments will be available as well as a raffle and dementia information stand.

The Library, which was founded in 1816 and is home to over 40,000 books, is situated in the centre of Nottingham in a Grade II* listed Georgian town house and is home to one of the few remaining city centre walled gardens.

Danielle Hindle, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society in the East Midlands said: “It’s fantastic that Bromley House Library is opening up the private garden to help raise vital awareness and funds to support Alzheimer’s Society. It’s a wonderful venue and will be a great afternoon out for the whole family. It is local organisations like them that enable us to support more people living with dementia and their families and carers. We greatly appreciate their support and generosity.”

Will you be thriving or surviving this year?

Lacking Self Belief…?

Worn down with other problems or issues…? Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking

self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.

Hello ladies,I hope that you’re well and looking forward to the Spring/Summer 2014 fashion as much as I am. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this you’ll have packed away your wintery layers, woolly scarves, toasty boots and will already be buying some pretty pastels.

Dusky pink is very on trend again this year and baby blue is an absolute must have! Even yellow! Yes yellow, which is such a feel good colour to wear, and whether you are a lacy lady or a linen lady you will have no problem finding either this season. The buzz words this season are Ladylike, feminine and pretty.

I would like to digress if I may and write a little about the whole “shopping experience” ……

It’s all very well picking up glossy magazines and seeing photos of gorgeous (air brushed and ‘got their own team of twenty people helping them look that way’) models and seeing what they look good in. And then there’s the real world! For some ladies going out to buy new clothes can be quite daunting and scary. Age is a question of mind over matter. If YOU don’t mind, it really doesn’t matter! It’s an attitude of mind and not a number that defines you!

Am I too old? Am I too short? Am I too heavy/slim? What will my husband/partner/daughter/friends say if I show up in this? Seriously, these are questions that I hear ladies asking themselves (out loud) all the time. My advice to you is: If YOU like it, it feels comfy and makes you smile ... Buy it! The trick is to find a style or styles that suit you and you feel comfy in. Always hide the bad bits and accentuate the good!

Please don’t try and squeeze yourself into something a size too small and think that it will look okay once you’ve got your MAGIC knickers on. Trust me - it will just end up looking like you’ve bought something too small and have magic knickers on underneath!!!! The correct underwear is DEFINATELY the most important thing to begin your outfit. If your underwear is the correct fit then your outfit will look great.

I was reading an article this week written by a very famous British Icon model and I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It was as though she has been reading my last little columns in the NG magazine and had been reading my mind, as 90% of the article said exactly the things that I’ve been saying:Don’t take fashion too seriously, have fun with it.Don’t try and do the “latest“ fashion from head to toe but add a little bit of trend to the clothes you already have and love.Don’t listen to people saying “you should be wearing this, you shouldn’t be wearing that.”And one last thing: something that I tell every single one of my customers .... if you don’t come out of the changing room, look in the mirror and have a big smile on your face - go right back in there, take it off, put it back on the rail and try on something else. It has to be an immediate wow or nothing! So get out there, shop until you drop and HAVE FUN!!!!!

On Monday the 24th of February 2014, Richard Bonington Primary School was chosen to take part in the Tenner Relay Challenge.

We were given £10 to make as much money as possible for the charity SCOPE. After a lot of debating, the teachers decided to do an ‘I’m A Year 6 Get Me

Out Of Here’ theme (suggested by Alana Meenan) which included doing many different challenges from Monday to Tuesday. The challenges were set by parents and children in the school. Challenges included wearing pants on our heads, stacking After Eight mints and eating pickled onion, brussel sprouts and donuts (without licking our lips). We slept at school and even did challenges through the night!

On Tuesday morning we were woken up at 7:00 am (early for some of us!). We were told by the teachers to get changed into our onesies (if we weren’t already in them) and go into the hall, where we performed Gangnam Style one more time. After that we were told to go outside and do 5 laps of the playground! We were all tired so this wasn’t easy!

After this we all went back to the classroom and got everything ready for the day ahead. For breakfast the teachers, helped us by cooking toast and getting cereal out. Compared to Monday, Tuesday was a very normal day and we were all very tired for the rest of the week.

We raised a total sum of £651.80!

Remembering Eric….

William Eric Woodward

With the centenary of the First World War approaching one way we can contribute is to take a closer look at our war memorials and ask ourselves who were the men behind the names?

I chose a name at random from one Nottingham war memorial and set out to find out something about the life behind the name - William Eric Woodward.

Through researching the census records, I traced his nephew living in Derby. War records, Scouting and other archives gave me a wealth of information allowing me to piece together much of Eric’s short life. Born in 1899, William lived on Gawthorne Street, New Basford. His father, a house decorator, died in 1908 and his mother

took up this occupation to support Eric and his younger sister Agnes. Eric was a keen scout, joining the 1st Caledonian troop in 1909. The troop met at Blackwood camp close to the newly built Nottingham prison. A Memorial Gateway still marks the entrance to Blackwood commemorating all Scouts who died in the First World War. Eric’s sister, Agnes, later became Akela of the scout troop.

Corporal William Eric Woodward, Durham Light Infantry died on the 29th June 1919 in Leicester Military hospital and is buried in Basford cemetery. He is one of 15 names commemorated on the memorial windows at St Andrews with Castle Gate Church in Nottingham. The charity War Memorials Online (www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk) seeks photographs and details of all memorials to assist them in compiling a lasting tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Perhaps you can assist this project or uncover some details of the lives behind the names on your local war memorial?

Summer spells a time when most people will be relaxing and going on holiday. But this year, as we look forward to a summer of sport with the World Cup, don’t let car crime kick off.

Failing to keep your car secure is an own goal you won’t want to make, so reserve this summer for scoring a win against thieves by making sure doors, windows and sunroofs are shut, locked and secure at all times.

Give car thieves red cards this season by ensuring valuables are out of sight. Even something as simple as a coat or lunchbox on the backseat could be enough for opportunists to make a tackle that you won’t see coming.

I’m sure that sat-navs are one of the most valuable things you keep in your car, but you can score a hat-trick against theft this season by: making sure not to leave them in the glove box, keeping them secure and on your person, and making sure to wipe suction marks off the windscreen.

But doing this is only enough to call half-time on thieves. Make sure you’re a point up at the end of play by taking your keys out of the car at all times, otherwise you could be sitting out the next match because thieves have taken you for a ride. I’m sure

that losing your car wasn’t part of your game plan.

And if you’re travelling to an unfamiliar place this bank holiday, revise your defence strategy and read up on the Park Mark approved car parks which are an estimated 50 times safer than parking on the street. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of those odds?

Blow the final whistle on car thieves by having an alarm fitted as well as investing in a steering lock. Don’t let thieves make you their next target, after all, it’s worth taking the time to secure your vehicle to stop losing the match in the long run.

Remember to catch us at road show events across the county this summer, where you can get the upper hand on car crime by picking up some crime prevention advice from our officers. Visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ for details of where we will be and more crime prevention advice.

John Palmer is a wills and probate executive at QualitySolicitors Yates & Co

will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing.

If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances.

Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process.

Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney.

People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older.

This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a mental illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities.

Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you

Gedling Borough Council is asking for pet food donations to support a project that provides a foster home for pets from families who are affected by domestic violence.

The ‘Pets Project’ run by Women’s Aid Integrated Services (WAIS) helps women and their children who need to leave abusive relationships but are scared to leave pets behind with an abusive partner. Most refuges and hostels are unable to house animals, but the WAIS team can organise for a carer to foster pets and re-unite them with the owner once they are ready. The owner is required to pay for the pet food and the council are asking for customers and staff to give pet food donations to help ease the burden on the families.

People can donate food at the council offices in Arnot Hill Park, Arnold and all donations will then be passed onto WAIS who will allocate the food to the foster homes.

Sarah Lloyd, Women’s Aid project organiser said: “We’re really pleased that the council have asked to help by providing donations to the Pets Project. We are always keen to raise the profile of the project so more women are aware of it and we welcome anyone who can help by donating food, animal carriers, money or by volunteering to foster pets.”

For more information people can contact Sarah at Women’s Aid Integrated Services on 07971 337 264 or email [email protected] or visit www.wais.org.uk

Please get in touch if you think I can help

As you will know, sadly, the number of food banks opening across the country is increasing and Gedling is no exception. Times are tough for lots of people and many are turning to food banks in order to feed their families.

However this vital service relies upon food donations from local people in order to keep helping those in need.

Gedling Borough Council is set to freeze its share of the Council Tax for the next two years.

Cllr John Clarke, Leader of the Council said:

“Gedling’s Council Tax is lower than about 80% of councils in the Country and given the unprecedented cuts in our funding from government, we could really do with the extra income that comes from council tax.

However, we recognise that many of our residents are struggling with the cost of living and in some cases, to even feed their families, so we don’t want to add to their burden by increasing council tax.

Government has listened to representations we’ve made and changed the way that it is funding councils that freeze Council Tax in such a way that it is now a sensible thing for Gedling to do”.

Gedling freezes council tax for two years!

Help Angel find her way to her new home

Readers may recall last year a homeless, blind cat called Angel. The good news was that Angel was rehomed - but sadly owing to her owner’s circumstances, she has since returned to the local charity which helped her.

Whilst change is challenging for any animal, imagine being blind and facing this u p h e a v a l ? Volunteers at Animal

Accident Rescue Unit are keen to get Angel a permanent home, as one explains: ‘Angel lives in a world of darkness and her life’s been turned upside down. But, like many blind cats, it’s astonishing how well she copes - and most importantly enjoys life.’

Blindness aside, the volunteers agree there is so much more to Angel! A beautiful dark ‘tortie’ with ‘an adorable nature’, she loves company and is suited to a home without pets or small children. Whilst adopting a blind cat may seem challenging, volunteers experienced with blind cats, agree: ‘Angel will soon learn her new home; all she wants is a lovely indoor home to enjoy a settled life.’

Blind cats use their whiskers and heightened senses to navigate with surprising ease. The experienced volunteers provide practical advice on blind cat care, whilst confirming care is easier than expected.

For the chance to adopt fabulous Angel call 0115-9984307; this number is only regarding Angel. Leave your contact details and postcode or email [email protected]. For emergencies and other matters, use 0115-9321555, or the email.

Meanwhile, the charity urgently needs more cat fosterers to help those it continues to help – like Angel.

Animal Accident Rescue Unit would like to thank the management of Asda, Arnold for allowing the charity to have a collection bin in their store for the past year for the donation of cat and dog food.

This has been a huge success. The charity would like to say a massive "THANK YOU" to all those wonderful Asda customers who gave so generously in their donations.

As the donation bin is no longer available in Asda, anyone wishing to continue to donate to help feed the animals of this Charity, please call Maggie on 0115 9201441.

Arnold Town Hopes of

Promotion...

Arnold Town go into the last quarter of the season with

hopes of promotion still a strong possibility. Despite losing three games either side of the Christmas/New Year period and suffering a huge fixture disruption due to the bad weather the Eagles are in the pack chasing leaders Thurnby Nirvana for the East Midlands Counties League title

Action from the recent 4 -2 win at Barrow Town

Work has begun on the £1 million Gedling Country Park on the site of the former 300 acre Gedling Colliery site.

Contractors North Midland Construction will begin work next week starting with remedial work to make the site safe for entry for members of the public. This is the first in a number of phases of works taking place in the park. Phase two is expected to commence in May 2014 which will be the installation of the access road and car park and then followed by the installation of the children’s play area in August.

The park is expected to be open to the public in the autumn.

Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke (pictured above right with Deputy Leader Michael Payne) said;

“I’m pleased that after 20 years we’re finally in a position to transform the last of the colliery sites in Nottinghamshire into a country park that all the residents in the borough, county and city can use and enjoy. We are delighted that the first phase of works has begun.”

The £1.2 million refurbishment of Arnold Leisure Centre is taking shape, with Bonington Theatre and the leisure centre reception area now open to the public.

There are still ongoing works to the pool and changing facilities, but all works are now expected to be complete by Monday 12 May.

The new theatre has been well received. Regular theatre goer, Annette Chantrey, said: “I was at the theatre the other day for the Bonington Players’ excellent performance of ‘The Rivals’. The reception area looks fantastic, really bright and airy, and the new bar area is now a lovely place to sit and have a drink. The refurbishments have made an amazing difference.”
