After months of negotiations, Gedling Borough Council announced today that it had secured land on the site of the former Gedling Colliery to transform into a country park. Gedling Colliery is one of the last remaining collieries to be re-developed and has remained dormant since the colliery was closed in 1991.
The council has agreed a long-term lease with site owners Harworth Estates that will pave the way to create a 238 acre area of parkland with lagoons, footpaths, cycle trails and hiking routes. The lagoons will be complimented by picnic areas that will be fully accessible for all, including disabled people.
The country park will also be a haven for local wildlife, and the Council is ambitious for the site to become accredited as a local nature reserve. Future development plans also include a children’s play area and, subject to funding, a permanent visitor’s centre exploring the area’s heritage.
Now that the land has been secured, the Council is set to invest nearly £1 million, including £630,000 of funding provided by Gedling Homes and a further £250,000 from the Homes and Community Agency (HCA), to complete the first phase of works that will get the country park up and running and open to the public. The Council plans to establish a “Friends Of” group to pursue future funding and investment opportunities, and to ensure that local residents are fully involved in the design, development and on-
going management of the country park. The park is anticipated to open to the public by Autumn 2014.
Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said: “This is a historic moment for the people of Gedling. There’s been talk about creating a country park on the site of the former Gedling pit ever since it was closed and I’m absolutely delighted to announce that the Council has secured the land to make this happen. Sealing this land deal has been a long and often frustrating exercise but we’ve stuck with it and can now look forward to seeing local people out on the new park enjoying themselves.
“The colliery site was the focal point of the local community for many many years and will become so again. The country park will provide a beautiful place for people to enjoy and bring back to life the great heritage and history of this part of Gedling. It will also bring a welcome boost to the local economy and provide a place where people can take their families for walks, cycle rides and wildlife spotting in clean, fresh air with fantastic views.”
Owen Michaelson, Chief Executive of Harworth Estates, who worked with the council to transfer the land, commented “Having worked for some years with Gedling Council on this proposed Country Park, I’m delighted that we’ve now transferred 240 acres to the Council which will enable the final stages of restoration to take place.
“It’s been very satisfying being involved in this project which turns the legacy of coal mining into something that can be enjoyed by so many members of the local community. I’m also pleased that, nearby, the former mine site continues to generate energy by harnessing old mines gas as well as a proposed new facility that aims to provide solar power. A great new future for an old industrial site”
Council seals the deal to create Gedling Country Park

Viva España!Tapas originate from Spain. They are small plates of food usually served with drinks. In Andalucia, where we recently had a holiday, tapas are still served free with drinks! Why not throw a tapas night? Green olives and good bread are a must, along with a few other dishes. Here are some of my favourites. Oh and remember the sangria and cerveza.....Patatas Bravas with
Chorizo & Spicy Tomato Sauce
1kg baby new potatoes1 tbsp olive oil1 tsp paprika170g chorizo - slicedfor the sauce1 medium onion - chopped400g tin tomatoes2 cloves garlic - chopped2 tbsp olive oil1 red chilli - chopped1 tbsp tomato pureesalt & pepperwhite wine/sherry (optional)
Baked Tortilla Squares2 tbsp olive oil2 med onions - thinly sliced1 potato (250g) - thinly sliced2 cloves garlic - crushed6 large eggs2 tbsp parsley - choppedsalt & pepper
Hot, Hot, Hot Garlic Prawns380g uncooked king prawns2 tbsp olive oil2 cloves garlic -thinly sliced1 - 2 red chillies - finely sliced1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce1 tbsp parsley - chopped
methodHeat oven to 200°C. In a large non-stick frying pan gently fry the onion, potato & garlic until they are cooked. This may take quite a while so be careful not to burn. Cool the mixture down. Break eggs into a bowl, add parsley and the cooled potato & onion mixture. Season really well then tip into a well oiled 20cm square non-stick baking tin. Bake for 20 mins or until cooked and browned on top. Tip out of tin and cut into squares. (makes 16)
methodHeat oven to 200°C. Boil potatoes in a large pan of salted water until cooked. Drain & place in a roasting tin. Crush slightly so they crack open. Toss in olive oil, sprinkle with paprika and bake until they have crispy edges (about 25 mins). Meanwhile, fry the chorizo slices in a non stick pan til they go crisp. Drain off some oil and mix in with crispy potatoes. For the sauce, heat oil in a small pan, gently cook the onion & garlic til soft. Careful not to burn. Add chilli & tomato puree & cook for 2 mins. Add splash of wine & boil til reduced. Add tomatoes, bring to boil then simmer gently til reduced to thick sauce (30 mins). Liquidise to a smooth sauce. Serve sauce on top of spuds or in a separate jug. (serves 6-8)
methodHeat oil in a pan and gently cook the garlic and chilli slices for a few minutes. Add prawns to the pan and cook until they turn pink. Add the sweet chilli sauce. Mix well and serve sprinked with parsley.

Local, friendly, reliable and professional service
The Beerhouse Act of 1830 liberalised regulations governing the brewing and sale of beer. Under the Act any householder who paid rates could apply to sell beer or cider in his home. Within 8 years of the Act there were 46,000 beer houses recorded across the country.
Before this Act many of Arnold’s pubs were not recorded. Some only opened for a short time, others started as beer houses and then grew into pubs. One of these was The Ball. It is likely that The Ball was situated on Mansfi eld Road and that although small it catered for travellers and provided lodgings.
The Ball was a popular name for beer houses as they tended to avoid traditional pub names. Sheffi eld still has six pubs of this name. The name was intentionally simple as not many could read at the time. Other beer houses took the name of the owner eg. Jones Beer House.
In the spring of 1774 John Parkin, a knifegrinder from Tideswell, Derbyshire was visiting Arnold with his knifegrinding machine. Parkin lodged at The Ball with his assistant who was also his 11 year old son. The pair left The Ball at 4.05am one morning to travel to into Nottingham.
They were stopped on Sandy Lane (now part of Mansfi eld Road) by two men, one of whom clapped a pistol to John’s chest and demanded his money. The other forcibly put his hand into John’s pocket and robbed him of seven guineas in gold and fi ve shillings in silver (about £490 in today’s money).
The criminals then jumped over a gate and ran away as fast as possible. They were described as “about 23 or 24 years of age; the one with the pistol was near 6ft high, wore his own dark brown or black hair, a round hat, a black Barcelona Handkerchief about his neck, a blue coat, red waistcoat, and leather breeches; the other, about 5ft 9” high, his own curled black hair (or in imitation of it) a round hat, white cravat, brown coat, blue striped waistcoat and black breeches—both appeared like gamblers.”
John Parkin and his son could not read or write, so they marked their written evidence with a cross. They would not have known the name of the pub. The name of the landlord is not mentioned but John Stirtevant Snr was the landlord of an unnamed beerhouse on Sandy Lane until about 1796 so it is possible that this was the same one.
The highwaymen were not caught, even though their description was sent out to the local authorities and a substantial reward was offered. It read:“the Head Constables, Petty Constables, and other peace offi cers; are requested to be very vigilant in their duty, by searching all barns, stables, out houses, woods, etc and to call to their assistance ablemen if necessary, to secure these daring villains ; and if possible bring them to Justice.”Nottingham County Hall, June 25, 1774.
The reward for capture was £40 for each man or £80 for the two. In today’s money that would be £2,600 each, quite a large sum. In 1774 £80 would be a craftsman’s wages for 5 years or it would buy you 12 horses or 20 cows. Enough to set some one up for life!

Nottingham Flower Club Celebrates
60 years on from its inaugural meeting as Nottingham Horticultural and Floral Group, chaired by Mr Harry Wheatcroft, Nottingham Flower Club are celebrating our Diamond Anniversary.
Nottingham Flower Club, affiliated to NAFAS, promotes floral art by fostering interest and inspiration through plant materials available from the garden, countryside, seashore and more recently exotic global materials.
Members of Nottingham Flower Club have produced floral art at places such as Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Chatsworth House, Southwell Minster, Belvoir Castle and St. Barnabus Cathedral with individuals finding success at shows such as Newark and Nottinghamshire, Moorgreen and, of course, Chelsea and in May at the newly entitled Nottinghamshire Show they were invited to showcase a piece entitled “Images of Nottinghamshire” (pictured above).
Nottingham Flower Club based at the Bluecoat School, Aspley, offers opportunities to learn the skills of floral art with a full calendar of traditional and contemporary design demonstrations, social activities and visits including David Austen Roses and Highgrove. If you are inspired to join us please contact [email protected] for further details, you will be very welcome.

DAVIDSONS HOMES in Nottingham
Showhomes open Thursday to Monday 10.30am – 5.30pm
Homes at Davidsons ‘Heron’s Place’ development in Arnold are now available through the Government’s ‘Help to Buy’ scheme, which aims to make it easier to buy a new build home. And it’s not just for first time buyers, it’s for anyone who needs help to buy a new home worth up to £600,000. So if you want to move to a bigger home, and need help with your deposit, then it could be for you.You need just a 5% deposit and then the Government will lend you up to 20% of the value of the property. That means you can then buy the home with a 75% mortgage. Even better, you own 100% of your home and the loan is interest free for the first 5 years. It can be repaid at any time or when you sell your home.Stephanie King, Sales Director at Davidsons Homes, said “This really is a fantastic initiative. The fact that it helps not just first time buyers, but anyone who is looking to move to a new home worth up to £600,000 is great news for so many people”.
Heron’s Place, on Ashington Drive, currently has a range of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes available from £176,000 - all of which can be bought using ‘Help to Buy’. Arnold’s Food Bank, which runs from the Daybrook Baptist Church on Mansfield Road, is making an appeal for renewed donations.
The food bank opened in December last year, and serves the entire Gedling area. It’s run by Arnold Churches and the Trussell Trust, with support from Gedling Borough Council. Its aim is to provide emergency food to local people in crisis.
Since opening, the food bank has had over nine tonnes of food donated, and has given out nearly seven tonnes of food to a total of more than 870 people
Helen Lloyd, who runs the food bank, said: “We could easily reach our 1000th client by August, but we need the donations to keep coming. Items we’ve been low on of late include - amazingly - tinned tomatoes and spaghetti. Plus, we always need long life milk and juice, tinned fruit and puddings, treats, biscuits and cereals. At the moment the only items we really don't need are beans, soup and packets of pasta. Tea and coffee is also always welcome.” People can donate at Gedling’s Civic Centre in Arnot Hill Park and at leisure centres across the borough. They can also drop donations of food off at the Daybrook Baptist Church on Mansfield Road between 1.15pm and 3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

As you may know, two men who failed to carry out a bank robbery in Arnold earlier this year have been left to count the cost in jail. Emmanuel Staff, who is 32, and Ryan McDevitt, who is 25, are thought to have studied the HSBC branch in Front Street, Arnold, the night before they robbed it.The incident happened on Thursday 10 January 2013, at around 10.55am, when a security guard was depositing cash. The men entered the bank wearing masks and threatened the guard and other staff with a handgun and demanded money. The guard refused to assist and was assaulted by them. The two men also threatened to attack customers if they tried to phone for help, including a number of children and a dog.The robbers fled from the bank in a Volkswagen Golf which had been stolen from a woman in Radford two days before in a knife point robbery. Officers found it abandoned in a nearby street half-an-hour after the attempted robbery. When Staff and McDevitt were later arrested they were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. This included the car-jacking in Radford and the number plate theft from a similar Golf in Birmingham a few hours after the robbery. Both men were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday 9 July 2013. Staff, of Lindfield Road in Broxtowe, pleaded guilty half-way through the trial and was sentenced to 12 years.
McDevitt, of Markham Crescent in Sherwood, was found guilty of the offence and was sentenced to 13 years. My colleague Detective Inspector Kev Broadhead said: “This was a planned, brazen and violent crime, which has left its mark on a number of people. “While the bank robbery was a failed attempt to steal cash, Staff and McDevitt did succeed in injuring the security guard and scaring the living daylights out of staff and customers, something that is often more difficult to get over than a physical injury. The ordeal lasted only eight minutes but it will no doubt be a lasting, troubling memory for those who were there at the time. “I would like to acknowledge the keen eyes and ears of a number of key people whose detailed witness accounts proved vital in securing these convictions today. “We believe these two were core members of a wider, organised group and their jailing today has put an end to their illicit plotting and violent crimes.”I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that incidents like this are very rare and as a force, we are doing all that we can to crack down on this kind of crime. We will deal with anybody who puts lives at risk like this, and we want to remind them that we will ensure they are brought to justice. If you are a victim of crime, you can call 101 or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

On Sunday 2nd June Bestwood Country Park hosted the ‘Big Lunch’ – part of the national ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign.
The Big Lunch and its ‘Feed a Thousand’ challenge was part of this year’s road show led by Nottinghamshire County Council and their waste contractors Veolia Environmental Services. The aim of the challenge was to feed a thousand people with the average amount of food a family waste in one year - £680.
As part of the wider event, and to celebrate the start of National Volunteers Week, Gedling CVS also hosted its ‘Volunteers Picnic’, where local voluntary groups showcased the valuable work they do.
The event was a roaring success with over 1000 lunches being served whilst coffee and cake was provided by volunteers from Friends of Bestwood Country Park and Bestwood Village WI. The Winding Engine House volunteers played host to hundreds of people, offering free guided tours around this Heritage Lottery-funded local treasure. The event brought many new visitors – many of whom have since returned with family and friends. Local brass band The Black Diamonds & close-up magician Peter Presto entertained hundreds in the glorious sunshine.
You can visit the Winding Engine House and Dynamo House café on Saturdays from 10am until noon. For more information, visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/bestwoodcp or phone 0115 976 2422

Residents of Bestwood Village woke up on 16 June to find that the corner of Moor Road and Park Road had been covered in knitting. The lamp posts, signs and trees had been wrapped in woolly coats and the fence was blossoming with crocheted flowers. There was also a washing line depicting undies through the ages with knitted vest and bloomers and a rather racy crocheted thong, a monkey hiding up a tree, a kite stuck up in the branches and a soft-furnishings makeover for the bus shelter. The clue as to who had carried out this covert activity was pinned to the Community Centre gates amongst a garden of sunflowers and hollyhocks – a simple knitted panel with the letters WI emblazoned across it.
Bestwood Village WI had decorated the village to coincide with the annual Family Fun Day. It was an idea hatched by their secretary, Kay Brown, after seeing some examples of yarn bombing on a visit to Rotenburg an der Fulda – Gedling's twin town in the heart of Germany. The irony here is that Kay is just about the only member of the Bestwood Village WI who doesn't knit! “They let me make some gingham curtains for the bus shelter so I could take part despite my lack of skill with the knitting needles.” said Kay, keen to explain how she had contributed to the project.
The display will remain up in the village for a few weeks, or until the weather decides otherwise. Several photographs of the yarn bombing are on the BVWI website: www.bestwoodvillagewi.org.uk along with some shots of the midnight antics of the WI putting it all in place.
Post script – the bra & thong have been pilfered from the washing line – anyone who knows of their whereabouts should contact NG Magazines or the WI direct.

Are you thriving... or surviving..?
Poor Self Esteem.. Lacking Self Belief.. Worn-out with Problems……. Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough,
we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive as
easily. Parks Therapy (PICT) offers a unique experience which is comfortable and rapid offering thorough, and lasting change. Available at Nottingham Natural Health Centre, Carrington.

Arnold Leisure Centre RefurbishmentThe refurbishment of Arnold Leisure Centre is due to commence after the August bank holiday resulting in the closure of the LC. We are delighted to have secured alternative pool time at other local pools. Details of where and when we will be training are presented at the bottom of this article. Swimmers will be made aware of the sessions they are expected to attend and it’s important that swimmers try and attend as many of these sessions as possible to maintain their fitness for the Club Championships and hectic gala season which starts in September 2013. The Club appreciates that the closure will be a very challenging time for all of us and we will do our best to accomodate swimmers wherever possible and practicable. We intend to keep swimmers and parents up to date with any developments and changes via the Clubs Website and e-mail and therefore can members please ensure the Club has up to date contact information which can be submitted via the Website.

Ella’s Teen Talk: Handling Money
Ella Higginbotham aged 15
Nextissue:
Handling Parents...
especially at Christmas!
We all know there’s nothing worse than making plans with friends and being forced to cancel them because our pockets are empty. I’m personally fed up of hearing my parents tell me that “money doesn’t grow on trees” (what a silly saying, it’s a bit obvious isn’t it!) when the majority of us under 16s can’t get jobs, but we really don’t want to miss out on a social life: we can’t win! When our purses are sparse there are just a few little things we can do to make sure we aren’t completely broke:
1) Get a Terramundi money pot- its saves money and looks pretty, genius! It’s different because what you put in you can’t get out until it’s full up and ready to be smashed. So you know that random change lying in your jean pocket or in the bottom of your bag? just chuck it into the terramundi and before you know it it’s time to smash it and you have a whole load of cash. Plus you get the added bonus of getting the hammer and whacking it open; it’s a lot of fun or can act as an excellent stress release which is perfect for all our teenage traumas!2) Don’t buy food and drink-starve! No but seriously if you’re going for a day out in town or in the park don’t waste money on buying food, just take it with you. Wrap up a sandwich at home because it’s just as yummy and completely free!3) Do little jobs- you’ve got to break the teen catchphrase of “can’t be bothered” (however heart-breaking it may be) and don’t be lazy, it only takes ten minutes to wash some pots or iron a few pairs of jeans. Ask your parents for just 50p every now and then by helping around the house and it will all add up. Oh and don’t forget the puppy dog eyes if you’re really desperate.4) Compare where you shop- don’t buy the first thing you see. You can probably get the same thing elsewhere for a much better price. Be patient and window shop for a bit until you find the ideal, cheap purchase. 5) Babysit- it’s a doddle (Hopefully!) You get paid to spend your evening watching TV whilst the kids are in bed, plus everyone tells you to help yourself so that means free food! You can’t go wrong! You or your parents must know families with young kids so ask around and do a good job of it; that way word gets around and you will eventually have loads of business. It’s the little things that you can do to make sure you’ve always got some money spare to do the things that you want to do.
Keep it sensible and realistic and you should never be searching for scraps of money around your bedroom again because, trust me, that’s a lost battle.

OPEN EVENING
THURSDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 2013 AT 7PM
Choosing the right secondary education for your child is one of the most important decisions you can make in supporting their development into young adulthood.
If you would like your child to:
Be taught by well qualified, enthusiastic and committed staff
Be taught clear Christian morals and values in a caring community
Be part of a school deemed to be good with outstanding features by OFSTED in September 2010
Attend a school with a history of good examination results
Experience a wide range of extracurricular activities
Be supported to be the best that they can be at whatever they try
Then Christ the King Catholic Voluntary Academy is the place for you!
We are situated near Arnold town centre and are easily accessible by local bus services. Christ the King is an academy for the whole community.
We welcome applications for places from parents of children who have not attended our partner primaries or who are not Catholic but whose parents wish them to be educated in the caring Christian Community. business, IT & finance
In the UK, 76% of over 65‘s don’t have a computer, more have never used the internet at all! Some because it’s ‘too technical’, others terrifi ed by stories of identity theft or online scams. Some even believe that ‘cloud storage’ can be affected by the weather!
But it’s not just the retired, ‘Silver Surfer’ generation that struggles with technology. Using computerized machines at work, writing letters for your employer or managing family photo’s at home can be diffi cult because the majority of us have had little or no training for the technology we use every day, other than the bare minimum provided by an employer or school.
So when you buy the latest TV or tablet device you probably only use a small percentage of it’s functions. Why? Because you’ve never been taught to explore and experiment with technology. So when you have a problem you have to seek support, but technical support and tech repair businesses have
convinced you technology is ‘far too complex for you to understand’.
Gadget Man Jay Ltd, based in Arnold want to change that. Primarily providing ‘In-home’ consumer technology teaching and support services, they offer a full end-to-end ‘Tech Owner’ service that includes help buying new technology, installing and setting it up, a FULL ‘In- home’ support, repair and upgrade service, but most important is the ‘In-home’ coaching to help you learn to use your new device.
They cover everything from computer online security to washing machine wash programmes.
And they PREFER to explain and teach you the stuff you want and need to know about your technology, helping YOU improve confi dence and ability and get the most from your device. Try them out.
The heart of technology

Garden Delights Dover Beck Flower Club
The Dover Beck Flower Club have had an exciting few weeks! First they had a massively successful evening with NAFAS national demonstrator Bill Dixon and this was followed up by a garden evening in the grounds of Mapperley Old Hall. This took place at the garden of one of the committee members and as you can see was very much enjoyed. The delicious supper was provided by Judith Naylor and then members were able to wander around to view the delightful gardens of Mapperley Old Hall.
There is no meeting in August but the autumn programme begins in September with Pat Billing “Angles and Tangles” on Thursday September 19th. All are welcome, doors open at 7pm and visitors pay £5. After the demonstration there will be a social time, a chance to partake of tea and a cake in aid of Macmillan before the arrangements are raffled off. If you would like more information on this friendly group of flower arrangers contact Carolyn 0115 9664771 or Glenise 0115 9267989.
Nottingham Centre (National Trust)
Summer Update
This year hasn’t offered the best of summers, but members of the Nottingham Centre have been making the most of it. Excursions have included Ely Cathedral, Dudley and Moseley Old Hall, and Scampton Hall and Gardens. Future trips include Ickworth in August and Burton Constable in September.Members of the Garden Group had a great day out at RHS Harlow Carr, the most northerly RHS garden, near Harrogate, and in July visited the St. Ann’s Allotments in Nottingham. The Local and Family History Group also offers a variety of excursions throughout the year, and, in common with all Nottingham Centre outings, there is usually considerable emphasis placed on food (coffee breaks, lunch breaks, WI teas) so no one is likely to faint from lack of nourishment. Like walking? Various walks are arranged throughout the summer, with a minibus providing transport to exotic locations further afield. The Centre also offers short break holidays. The October holiday includes Covent Garden, a backstage tour, The Musical Museum and Greenwich – there’s a lot to look forward to! The winter programme of talks resumes at the Mechanics in September, starting on Thursday 12th with a talk at 2.15pm by Stephen Flinders: ‘Stanton – Gone but not Forgotten.’This will be followed on Thursday 26th at 7.30pm by a talk by Peter Hammond: ‘So you Think You Know Nottingham, (pt 2).’The Nottingham Centre is a friendly organisation affiliated to National Trust, and you must be a NT member to join. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Contact Heather Brooks for more information, tel. 0115 9436272, email: [email protected] or visit the website:www.nottinghamnt.co.uk

charity?.

We are a local Animal Charity and we are in urgent need of more
cat-fosterers please! You would care for the cat in your
own home, until it is adopted. Your own transport is not required and we always have deserving
cats needing help, where a friendly fosterer can make all the difference! This is our busiest time,
so PLEASE help us!This is a very rewarding voluntary
role and you do not need to be at home all day, as long as the cat
can remain indoors whilst fostered, even holiday-cover would help us.All vet treatment is paid for by the
Charity.For more information please call
Chris: 0115 9563799Please leave a message on the answer-phone and you will be
called back as soon as possible. We also desperately need drivers
to take some of our cats to vet appointments, please call the
above number.
