Dear Reader

We hope you have a safe and enjoyable day with us, watching the Nicky Grist Stages Rally. Nicky has been an integral part of the rally for many years now, and it is now the third year, he has offi cially sponsored the event.

Having competed at the very top level of rallying, Nicky has been immersed in a world where each rally organising team has striven to make their rally the best of the season. It is with this determination and enthusiasm that he joins us each year – to make the Nicky Grist Stages the best possible British national rally event and ensuring the following year is even better than previous years. And just because we won the BTRDA Best Rally of the Series 2012, we are not sitting on our laurels – there is always more we can do to enhance the Nicky Grist Stages rally.

With that in mind, Nicky and the organising team have put together a tremendous rally this year for both the competitors and spectators. It helps that they have as foundation blocks some of the best rally stages in the country, with the Forestry Commission and M.O.D. trying their best to make sure they are in tip top condition for the rally day. The team is also a group of highly experienced and dedicated rally enthusiasts, so ensure the paperwork and ‘not so much fun part’ of the rally is seamless.

Nicky’s focus has been on making the stages a real challenge for the competitors, and so a great spectacle for all of you watching. Rallying separates itself from other motorsport by being very much a team effort both in the service AND in the car. So, he set about giving this year’s crews a real challenge – there’s going to be a lot happening out there from high speed sections going into tight junctions, sharp corners after long bumpy straights. It is all going to come at the competitors very quickly, so smooth pacenote delivery will be as critical as driver control.

In addition, to ensure everyone spectating gets to be as close to the action as possible we have partnered with World Rally Radio, who will be broadcasting live commentary throughout the day on iRally, with end of stage interviews from the infamous Howard Davies and the stunning and very knowledgeable, Lowri Davies. You will be able to pick this up through the iRally app on your mobiles and tablets (as long as you have signal!) as well as on the tannoy systems we have set up on the hairpin of Route 60 and in the Service Park, around the hospitality area.

As always, the proceeds of the programme sales go, totally, to local charities and not the rally. And we will be serving sandwiches and cakes back at HQ after the rally, with the cake proceeds, this year, going to the Welsh Air Ambulance. A service none of us want to use but is very comforting to know is there!

Happy Rallying and Enjoy your Day.

ATTENTION!

Rally cars move quickly and may:• Run wide on corners• Cut across corners• Leave the road• Throw up stones• Do what you least expect

Enjoy rallying. . .but TAKE CARE!

FIRE RISK

At this time of the year the forests and heath-lands are very dry and inevitably there is a considerable risk of fi re. The rally organisers, Forestry Commission and Army would appeal to everyone to follow a few simple precautions:

• Do not smoke in areas of risk.• Do not discard cigarettes or matches without ensuring they are completely extinguished.• Do not light any fi res or barbecues.• Be careful where you park your car – it is not unknown for hot exhausts to set fi re to dry grass.• And please take your entire litter home with you, Thank you.

Please remember that if the Fire Services have to be called out it will almost certainly delay the rallies progress and could lead to the stage(s) being cancelled.

The event will be held under the General Regulations of the MSA Limited

PLEASE plan your event with safety in mind. This event is taking place on a live Military range with the consent of the army. We are their guests and without their cooperation the event would not run. Please respect all signage and marshals requests. They are present for your safety:

• Motorsport can be dangerous and despite us taking all reasonable precautions, unavoidable accidents can happen. In respect of these, you are present at your own risk.

• You will NOT be able to walk on the competitive stage but will be encouraged to walk behind the tree line or on the pathways created.

• No dogs allowed on the event - disabled assistance dogs only.• Children and infants should ALWAYS be accompanied by an adequate amount of adults who remain

responsible for their behaviour.• Please make sure you dress according to the weather conditions.• Take all litter home with you or place it in the skips or black bags provided.• Do not light fi res or barbeques - they can cause major fi res with serious consequences.• Do not bring fi reworks to the event.• Please follow the countryside code at all times when you are in the forests.• Consider your own safety and that of others.

Forward by the Organisers

Welcome to the 33rd running of a forest rally organised by Quinton Motor Club Ltd, sponsored by Nicky Grist Motorsports. We are grateful of the support Nicky personally gives the event and we know the association will continue into the future, with plans already being made for 2014 and beyond. This year sees the 26th consecutive year the event has been a qualifying round of the BTRDA Rally Series. Following the success of 2010 when the event was voted the Best Event in the Series, and having featured strongly in 2011, we again won “The Bill Turner Trophy“ in 2012 for Best Event in the BTRDA Rally Series.

The move to the Royal Welsh Showground has proved very successful and the event has returned there this year, providing a base for the route that covers 44 stage miles over 7 stages, this year competitors return to the Showground for Lunchtime Service.

We ask that you show consideration to the local residents living on and around the route and respect the requests of the Marshals and Offi cials of the Rally and think about yours and others safety while out enjoying the spectacle of UK Forest Rallying .

Thanks

Neil, Clerk of the Course and the Organising Team

Forward by Nicky Grist

Welcome to the 2013 Nicky Grist Stages, where we have designed a new route so as to ensure both you, the spectator and the competitors fi nd the rally to be fresh and exciting yet again. This year there are seven stages, with the last stages set to challenge everybody to the limit. The same, extremely competent team is in place and will be putting on another great event for all concerned.

We have also endeavoured to make sure you get up close and personnel to the rally by partnering with World Rally Radio, who will be broadcasting live all the action from the rally through the iRally app. We will air this on Route 60 and in the service, so I recommend you make your way to those points, or fi nd a signal for your smartphones or tablets and listen through the app. There is also a video of the Friday pacenotes run on the app, so you will be able to see the stages in action.

I would like to thank Skoda UK, for their continued support this year, supplying vehicles for event offi cials. This is in addition to their sponsorship at the Festival of Speed this weekend, and is a great testament to the organisers’ hard work in ensuring that Skoda UK gets full recognition for their support of us that they return year on year.

Safety, above all else, is paramount in what we are trying to achieve and I would like to thank all the marshals and safety crews, without whom we, competitors would not be able to compete.

For all spectators on the event, please abide by the instructions of our marshals and stay behind all safety barriers as your safety is also a concern to us.

I wish you all an enjoyable day’s rallying

This is the year of the volunteer in motorsport and without these heroes there would be no motorsport – whether track, rally or other discipline. They are an intrinsic part of ensuring

everyone has an enjoyable and safe rally. They are not here to ‘bully’ you or ‘throw their weight around’ but to make sure that you are as safe as is physically possible watching what can be a very

dangerous sport.

Many people come together to organise this rally, most of whom will not even be seen by spectators, as they are at the HQ deeply immersed in producing the results or other ‘behind-the-scenes’ tasks. The organisation of next year’s rally starts pretty much as soon as the last car fi nishes this year; it is a huge undertaking. Listed below are just a few of the main people who make sure this is a rally that is enjoyable for spectators and challenging for competitors.

INFORMATION ON SPECTATOR AREAS

We welcome all spectators to the designated Spectator Areas on and around the Epynt Ranges. Admission is only by purchase of a spectator programme (all monies going to local charities via Brecon Rotary Club and Tirabad Village Hall), which will be available as you enter any of the areas.

Military activity will be taking place on the Epynt Ranges throughout the weekend when the rally is taking place. At this sensitive time for the military, it is imperative that all of us use the Ranges sensibly and keep to the areas we have been allowed to use. Spectators being inconsiderate, driving poorly or attempting to watch the rally at points other than those that have been published could seriously affect rallying on MOD land in the future. At all times, please heed any requests from the marshals.

SS1 CEFN Please approach from Llanwrtyd Wells, do not drive through Tirabad Village and follow the Spectator Arrows into the Forest. Do not enter the Forest at any other location. The Car Park will take you to a downhill hairpin right.

SS3 & SS6 - HALFWAY STAGESFor the morning stage enter the Ranges via the dual carriage and park on the level moorland that is accessed opposite the huts at Dixies, walk down to an uphill 90 right over a cattle grid into the forest. DO NOT PARK on the track leading down to the Spectator point as this becomes part of the stage in the afternoon or in the tarmac car parks at Dixies as these are being used as Auxiliary Services areas.

For the afternoon enter and depart from the A40, turning into the forest by Halfway village at map ref. 160/835328. After turning off the main road, drive for about 1 mile, taking the right-hand track to the parking area. From here, take the sign-posted track for 100 yards to the viewing area. Be aware that this is a steep climb and is not accessible for those with mobility diffi culties. Take care when crossing the track and then stand anywhere inside the spectator area.

SS4 & SS7 - ROUTE 60Approach and depart only from Llywel (map ref 160/870299) off the A40 and travel up

the dual carriageway for approximately 2.5 miles. Then turn right onto the gravel road (map ref 160/871358), where you can park and have a very short walk to the stage. Toilets

will be available.

By standing safely in the Spectator Area up on the hillside opposite the tight hairpin junction, it is possible to see the cars arriving (very quickly) and leaving the hairpin junction, as well as from the start and towards the fi nish of the stage. Commentary, Catering and toilets will be at this locationNO vehicular access is available at the access areas to the start or fi nish of this stage or to any other areas of the Ranges. Wales Air Ambulance is an all Wales charity providing emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries.

THEIR MISSION

It is their mission to aid the relief of sickness and injury, and the protection of human life, by the provision of an air ambulance service across Wales.

THEIR VISION

It is their vision to provide a 24-hour air ambulance operation, and continually strive for an outstanding air ambulance service available to everyone in Wales. Each helicopter can be launched within 3 minutes

of receiving an emergency call and utilizing the 3 bases a helicopter can be with a person in under 20 minutes.

WHY ARE THEY NEEDED?

The charity’s three helicopters are confronted with a diverse and challenging landscape. With over 8,000 sq. miles of remote countryside, bustling towns and cities, vast mountain ranges, and 800 miles of coastline as well as a widely scattered population there many in Wales who live or play in isolated locations, far from a major or specialist hospital. In urban areas, traffi c congestion and collisions can signifi cantly delay treatment when on a road ambulance. For these reasons, there is a recognised need for our three helicopters on active duty 365 days a year.

A service we hope to never use, but we cannot deny our sport is a dangerous one.

We all love to rally here in Wales. And it is partly the pitting ourselves against the adverse conditions that Epynt offers that brings us back year on year. Yet if the worst occurs and we need the support of medical specialists, it is those same adverse conditions that hamper us getting the help quickly - and each moment we wait becomes more critical and means a longer time in recovery. The Welsh Air Ambulance could then make all the difference to us. So rather than wait until we need them – they need £6 MILLION a year to keep running – so dig deep and ensure they are still running for many years to come.

THANK YOU.

Motorsport has been taking place on Mynydd Epynt, to give it its full name, since the immediate post war years when squaddies were seen driving

motorbikes “competitively” over the closed artillery range roads - usually well out of sight of the offi cers!

This was spotted by a chap called Charlie Rossiter, whose persistence and foresight quickly changed this informal activity into a full blown motorbike racing series that saw the “Epynt TT” races take place from 1948. These meetings attracted 200 competitors and thousands of spectators to a 5.2 mile circuit over the open moorland tarmac roads. With ever increasing speeds the circuit was soon deemed too dangerous, so the fi rst chapter of Epynt’s motorsport history closed in 1953. The start of the last Junior Race at Epynt: C.C. Sandford Velocette 348 already tucked in and leading on his way to a second consecutive event of the day win At the same time, the increase in post-war car ownership gave rise to the British Army Motoring Association organising weekend events which consisted of night navigation sections, trials and driving tests.

The use of the Epynt range tarmac roads quickly came to the attention of the outside world and the RAC International Rally fi rst visited Epynt in 1951. A 1.9 mile tarmac test was used near the Drovers Arms, a small but signifi cant step in the rallying history of Epynt. The RAC Rally only visited the ranges on three more occasions in the 1950’s but the scene had been set.

When the RAC Rally format changed to special stages in 1961 the organisers began using many stages starting

in the surrounding forests and fi nishing on the tarmac range roads. The tarmac roads were used several times up until the early 1970’s, however “local knowledge” caused foreign crews to become vociferous in their accusations of cheating and the fi nal visit of the RAC was in 1974.

The use of tarmac range roads was now well established and the history of events held on these infamous roads could fi ll a book. Indeed it did - the brilliant 300 page “Epynt” by Martin Leonard & Mark Griffi n which is well worth a read if you can fi nd it.

The building of the fabulous “Route 60” gravel road opened up a new possibility for forest based events to use the Ranges for a different form of rallying. The road was built in several sections. It was started by the 60 Field Squadron, of the Royal Engineers, and was fi nished by the forestry commission. You can see where it gets its name from!

When Wales Rally GB became based in Cardiff the huge potential of the forests and range roads of Epynt were quickly exploited to the full for both competitors and spectators alike. Rally GB fi rst used the “Halfway” stage in 2000 (a combination of Halfway forest, the tarmac over Deer’s Leap and the Route 60). Following several incidents on the tarmac, the fi nal piece of gavel road to link Halfway forest and Route 60 was constructed in 2004.

The then Secretary of the Meeting of the Quinton Stages Rally, Ray Barlow, became the Area Organiser for Rally GB for this part of the route. The Quinton Rally had used the forests of Brechfa and Crychan for several years for their BTRDA Gold Star event, so under Ray’s guidance the progression onto the WRC stages of the Epynt Ranges was complete.

To celebrate the 30th running of the event, in 2010, the Quinton organising team negotiated the closing of the centre road to allow BTRDA competitors to tackle the full Wales Rally GB Halfway Stage (Halfway Forest plus Route 60). The fastest time that day was only a mere 1.5 minutes slower than Sebastién Loeb in his Citroen - Gulp!

Proud to be Title Sponsor of the MSA Welsh National Rally Championship

It was obvious from the outset that the positions at the top of the BTRDA Gold Star Championship would change after the Dukeries. Connor McCloskey was getting married that very day!

In Connor’s absence Charlie Payne’s previous form in the East Midlands ranked him as one of the favourites for the event. Although absent in 2012, he was 3rd two years ago and runner-up in 2010, and the newly-formed partnership with Paul Spooner – Dukeries winner in 1999, 2002 & 2010 was already bearing fruit.

But then, David Wright/Michael Wilkinson, Matt Edwards/Will Rogers, the ever-improving Stephen Petch/ Ian Windress and Kevin Rowledge/Andrew Bargery could not be discounted.

Following problems fi nalising the route in 2012, Dukeries Motor Club Ltd was able to offer a full 44-mile event this year. Cars set off from Southwell Racecourse, recovering from the ravages of severe fl ooding during the winter, for quick blasts through Watchwood and Thieves Wood, before settling down to 7½ miles of Sherwood Pines.

Payne was joint fastest, with Jamie Anderson (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9), on the fi rst and then a second quicker than Petch on SS2 to move into a lead that had stretched to a winning margin of 17s by the time the two Focus WRC drivers reappeared at Southwell during the afternoon for the fi nish. Wright briefl y demoted Petch to 3rd after the fi rst run through Portland, but a three-minute off on the second run through Sherwood Pines pushed the 2009 Gold Star Champion down to an eventual 12th – a disappointing end to a promising run.

For his part, Matt Edwards had been having trouble with his Mitsubishi to the point that he had ‘borrowed’ an Impreza from Geoff Jones for the Dukeries. Unused to the car, he was struggling to get into the Top Ten for much of the day. However, his perseverance paid off and an eventual 8th overall earned him suffi cient points to retain 3rd place in the Gold Star Championship.

The nature of the stages in the East Midlands seems to favour Group N cars – Pat Naylor/ Ian Lawrence were 3rd overall last year but, unfortunately, any hopes of a repeat performance this time were dashed when their Lancer’s centre diff. broke in Portland. Notwithstanding, Jamie Anderson/Ella Flynn upheld category honours in fi ne style – joint leaders after SS1, following Wright’s indiscretion they moved up into the fi nal podium spot, only to be denied by Kevin Rowledge/Andrew Bargery’s Impreza WRC on the very last stage, only missing out by ten seconds.

Still, Anderson/Flynn are not only 4th in Gold Star but also inherit the Production Cup lead following Scott Faulkner/Dom Adams’ retirement with a lack of brakes. On the day, Tom Naughton’s Top Ten fi nish gave him 2nd Group N points – the Bury driver is still the only one to have scored two maximums so far this year and is currently 3rd in the table.

Despite anticipating dry dusty conditions on the recent Severn Valley Stages, competitors were greeted with torrential rain as they left the HQ start at Builth Wells, with all the drivers reporting that conditions were treacherously slippery on the stages over the Epynt Ranges.

At the end of the fi rst six stages it was Winsford’s Alex Allingham with co-driver, Chris Williams who held the early lead in their Impreza N10 ahead of the Evo of Newcastle Emlyn based duo, Sebastian Ling and Aled Rees. Very impressively, it was local lass, Sara Williams with Dai Roberts as co-driver, who kept her cool and held third for these stages only to fall foul of the slippery conditions and ended up sliding off the road on the very next stage. It was also on this stage that Allingham and Williams suffered an intercom failure which resulted in them dropping to second (as Nicky said – they should have used Stilo then they would have had no issues- forever the Stilo man is our Nick!). This brought Connor McCloskey and Francis Regan up into third, replacing Sara and Dai.

After service back at Builth Wells, the crews went out again and it was McCloskey who set the fastest stage times for the rest of the day, despite complaining of a hand brake problem, putting him and Regan in the lead ahead of Allingham/Williams in second and Ling/Rees in third.

In the end, it was McCloskey who pushed hard over the remaining stages to claim the outright win ahead of Ling/Rees with Allingham reporting that he pushed hard to begin the afternoon but eased off to settle for third as well as the group N honours for near showroom specifi cation cars. The championship award for the top two wheel drive car went to the Ford Escort of Ben Llewellin, who just happens to be the son of Nicky’s buddy and adversary, double British Rally champion, Dai Llewellin. In the passenger seat was co-driver Chris Davies from Port Talbot.

So, to the Nicky Grist Stages – looking at the entries so far it looks like a well presented pack of people who will be competing. All the usual faces are seen on the entries list, plus names such as Jason and Harry Gardener, Tony MacWhirter, Kevin Rowledge and co-driver Andrew Sankey, who is sitting next to Simon Rogers. All in all, a battle royal is on the cards.

Enjoy, and please do put any photographs from the rally online, so all those unable to come and watch will regret their decision!

...and to finish, a little piece on Elfyn Evans M-Sport and the R5

Our local lad from Dolgellau in Gwynedd, Elfyn Evans has been showing Malcolm Wilson, that he is not going to waste a second of his time at M-Sport. On the recent Rally d’Italia Sardegna driving the Qatar M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS WRC, Elfyn seemed to be inspired, and despite sitting with co-driver Giovanni Bernacchini for the fi rst time, he managed to gain a 6th overall on his debut WRC event. Now Malcolm has given Elfyn and Dan Barritt a fantastic opportunity to debut the R5 at Rally Finland on the 1st August.

And what a great place to get some seat time in the R5, but in the Nicky Grist Stages! It should set Elfyn and Dan up nicely for Rally Finland, particularly as tomorrow they have entered into the Greystoke Stages in Cumbria. By the time the weekend is over, Elfyn will have no choice but feel comfortable in the car and ready for the big boys!

And why is the Fiesta called the R5? Well, up to now there has been a bewildering array of class structures unique to rallying. So, Jean Todt has taken the proverbial bull by the horns and simplifi ed matters. The vast majority of rallying throughout the world will be based around the Group R category – namely production-based built around models of which no fewer than 2500 have been manufactured in the previous 12 months. Group R has six classes R1-R5 then the RGT, R1-R3 are the two wheel drive

categories, which will form the WRC3 championship, with the R4 is the next category up (surprisingly enough!) and star the 4WD’s with a lower engine size to the R5’s, with both contesting the WRC2 and ERC championships. So, not only are M-Sport ahead of the rest in their development, they again are ensuring they produce the best, and most

economical R5 on the market – no wonder orders are coming into Dovenby Hall already!!

Malcolm Wilson chose the Quinton Stages Rally (then called “ e Nicolet”) for his debut drive in

a Metro 6R4 in 1985 before entering the Lombard RAC Rally the following month. 20 years later, on his climb up the rallying ladder, his son Matthew won the event in 2004. At 17 years of age he evbecame the youngest winner of the rally.

So there is quite a relationship between Malcolm and the event that goes back nearly 30
