The Nicky Grist Stages 2012Dedicated to the memory of

Gareth (Jaffa) Roberts (1987-2012)One of the reasons I was happy to give my name and support to this rally was due to realising that there were no rallies in Britain dedicated to the co-driver. Rallying is about a duo – sitting side by side and working together as one in a rally car. This partnership is one of total trust in each other, to a degree that supersedes any other sport I know.

Every now and again, a talented co-driver comes along - Gareth was one of those, at 24 years old he already had massive experience, culminating in winning the WRC Academy last year. While he was just starting out, he had the ability to get to the very top of our profession. His recent loss on the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily has devastated us all, but it highlights that, while very rare, we do have fatalities and shows us that motorsport is truly dangerous; a part of why we love it all so much. Gareth dedicated himself to succeed in the sport and was on the road to a great career and has paid the ultimate price. So, it seemed only right and fitting to dedicate this year’s rally to his memory.

More than anything else, Gareth, known as Jaffa to his friends, epitomised life. I am proud to say, he was a fellow Welshman, small in stature but with an immense laugh. You could always find him, by the laughter, sharing a joke in the service park, making him one of the most popular people on the circuit. The rally community is a small one, particularly here in Wales, and I have known Gareth and his co-driver brother Dai, for many years now. I watched Gareth grow from being a national competitor to co-driving on events in the WRC and maturing into a highly talented team player.

The 2012 Nicky Grist Stages is dedicated to the memory of Gareth Roberts, where I know he will be joining you in what we hope will be a great day’s rallying. Memorial stickers for Gareth will be available for purchase at sign on at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, and all proceeds go to Gareth’s memorial fund.

ATTENTION!

Rally cars move quickly and may:• Run wide on corners• Cut across corners• Leave the road• Throw up stones• Do what you least expect

Enjoy rallying. . .but TAKE CARE!

FIRE RISK

At this time of the year the forests and heath-lands are very dry and inevitably there is a considerable risk of fire. The rally organisers, Forestry Commission and Army would appeal to everyone to follow a few simple precautions:

• Do not smoke in areas of risk.• Do not discard cigarettes or matches without ensuring they are completely extinguished.• Do not light any fires or barbecues.• Be careful where you park your car – it is not unknown for hot exhausts to set fire to dry grass.• And please take your entire litter home with you, Thank you.

Please remember that if the Fire Services have to be called out it will almost certainly delay the rallies progress and could lead to the stage(s) being cancelled.

The event will be held under the General Regulations of the MSA Limited (incorporating the Provisions of the International Sporting Code of the FIA), the Supplementary Regulations, and any written instructions that the organisers issue.

Forward by the Organisers

Welcome to the 32nd running of a forest rally organised by Quinton Motor Club Ltd. This year the event is titled the “Nicky Grist Stages” to acknowledge the continued involvement of our sponsor Nicky Grist Motorsports. We are grateful of the support Nicky personally gives the event and we hope that the association can continue into the future. While acknowledging Nicky as title sponsor of the event our thanks also go to Skoda UK, Official Vehicle Supplier and to Celtic Vale, our Official drinks supplier. The patronage of both companies has been tremendous and we thank them.

This year sees the 25th consecutive year the event has been a qualifying round of a BTRDA Championship. Following the success of 2010 when the event was voted Best Event, we featured strongly in 2011 and came in the top three Best BTRDA Events

The move to the Royal Welsh Showground in 2011 proved very successful and the event has returned there this year, providing a base for the route that cover 44 stage miles and around the same road miles.

As recent tragic events have shown Rallying can be very dangerous, and are thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Gareth (Jaffa) Roberts this weekend. We ask that you respect the requests of the Marshals and Officials of the Rally and think about yours and others safety while out enjoying the spectacle of UK Forest Rallying

Neil Cross Clerk of the Course and the Organising Team

Forward by Nicky Grist

Welcome to the 2012 Nicky Grist Stages, where we have a new route to spice up the event for those that are revisiting us, after numerous visit to the Quinton Stages Rally as it was once known. The same extremely competent team is in place, who will be putting on another great event for all concerned.

I would like to thank Skoda UK, for their continued support for this year, supplying vehicles for event officials and also to Celtic Vale, who will be supplying mineral water to all the competitors to keep them hydrated through their endeavours in the forests.

Safety, above all else, is paramount in what we organisers are trying to achieve and I would like to thank all the marshalls, and safety crews, without whom we competitors would not be able to compete.

For all spectators on the event, please abide by the instructions of our marshalls and stay behind all safety barriers as your safety is also a concern to us.

I wish you all an enjoyable days rallying.

Welcome to Sennybridge Army Field Training Centre. We are pleased that the Army allows the training area to be utilised for rallying; however, as we are sure you appreciate the primary function of the area is to provide a realistic training facility to our Armed Services. To assist in this task AND FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL SAFETY, please read and observe the following guidelines: 1. Do not leave the tarmac roads on the Training Area. 2. Only park in designated car parking areas and not on the Llywel – Tirabad road. 3. Do not drive through any barriers left in the down position, whether locked or not. They are

there for your own and others' safety. 4. Do not interfere with or get involved in, any military training whatsoever. 5. Do not enter or interfere with any of the Training Area buildings, installations or equipment. 6. Do not pick up or touch any military equipment or debris. IT MAY EXPLODE AND KILL

YOU. 7. Do not leave any litter. Please take your rubbish home. 8. Do not light fires. Even in winter, the undergrowth on the Training Area can be dry enough

to present a significant fire hazard. 9. Observe the speed limits set for the roads on the Training Area, They present a challenge

to experienced rally drivers and could well prove fatal to you if driven without due care. 10. The Training Area also contains significant agricultural, forestry and nature conservation

interests. Please follow the Countryside Code at all times. 11. In the event of any emergency, please contact an official of the rally or Range Staff or use

one of the clearly marked Range Emergency Telephones (free of charge), which will provide you with a direct line to Sennybridge Camp Guardroom, who can summon help on your behalf.

We do not wish to labour the above points, but they are important and failure to observe them may jeopardise future rallying on the Sennybridge Ranges. We hope you enjoy your Motorsport on the ranges. ISSUED BY: COMMANDANT, SENNYBRIDGE TRAINING AREA EPYNT & CAERWENT LIAISON OFFICER WELSH ASSOCIATION OF MOTOR CLUBS QUINTON MOTOR CLUB

Many people come together to organise this rally, most of whom will not even be seen by spectators, as they are at the HQ deeply immersed in producing the results or other ‘behind-the-scenes’ tasks. The organisation of next year’s rally starts pretty much as soon as the last car finishes this year; it is a huge undertaking. Listed below are just a few of the main people who make sure this is a rally that is enjoyable for spectators and challenging for competitors.

INFORMATION ON SPECTATOR AREAS

We welcome all spectators to the designated Spectator Areas on and around the Epynt Ranges. Admission is only by purchase of a spectator programme (all monies going to local charities via Brecon Rotary Club and Tirabad Village Hall), which will be available as you enter any of the areas.

Military activity will be taking place on the Epynt Ranges throughout the weekend when the rally is taking place. At this sensitive time for the military, it is imperative that all of us use the Ranges sensibly and keep to the areas we have been allowed to use. Spectators being inconsiderate, driving poorly or attempting to watch the rally at points other than those that have been published could seriously affect rallying on MOD land in the future. At all times, please heed any requests from the marshals.

SS1 & SS8 - MONUMENT STAGESTo reach this stage, you must only approach and depart through Garth on the A483. Turn onto the B4519 and then follow signs for the spectator car park situated at the end of Mabions Way. Once on to the gravel road, there is then a very short walk to a pair of jumps then into 90 left. The stage runs in the opposite direction in the afternoon.

SS3 & SS6 - HALFWAY STAGESEnter and depart from the A40, turning into the forest by Halfway village at map ref. 160/835328. After turning off the main road, drive for about 1 mile, taking the right-hand track to the parking area. From here, take the sign-posted track for 100 yards to the viewing area. Be aware that this is a steep climb and is not accessible for those with mobility difficulties. Take care when crossing the track and then stand anywhere inside the spectator area.

SS4 & SS7 - ROUTE 60Approach and depart only from Llywel (map ref 160/870299) off the A40 and travel up the dual carriageway for approximately 2.5 miles. Then turn right onto the gravel road (map ref 160/871358), where you can park and have a very short walk to the stage. Toilets will be available.

By standing safely in the Spectator Area up on the hillside opposite the tight hairpin junction, it is possible to see the cars arriving (very quickly) and leaving the hairpin junction, as well as from the start and towards the finish of the stage.

NO vehicular access is available at the access areas to the start or finish of this stage or to any other areas of the Ranges. Please help keep rallying on Epynt

The Nicky Grist Stages Rally 2012 –

This year’s route will contain 8 stages, comprising approximately 44 miles of gravel roads, with 41 miles of public and private road link sections. We have also changed a number of the stages, including Halfway, and a new stage in Crychan, with the final control being sited at Rally HQ at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. The rally will give competitors a feel for some of the stages used on the Wales Rally GB.

The live results for each stage will go up onto the Nicky Grist Stages website as soon as they are available, so that you can keep an accurate eye on how each competitor is doing.

As part of the REIS – Get Connected BTRDA Series’ media coverage, there will be a film crew at the rally. They have been given permission to film by the landowners and will be located at specific spots that have previously been agreed. Please help and support them, as they are the best way to educate the general public in the sport and show what a fantastic sport rallying is.

Now all we need now is the perfect weather.

A Little Piece About the Rally and its History

Quinton Motor Club were first given a forestry allocation in 1980 following many years of organising successful road and stage rallies, including a stage rally over Epynt in 1975. 1981 saw the event run 35 miles of stages in the Royal Forest of Dean for the first time with 115 crews, headed by Tony Pond and Mike Nicholson in a works’ DTV Chevette.

In 1985 the rally moved to North Wales and the forests of Penmachno and Clocaenog, with Malcolm Wilson winning the event by 3 minutes, driving a Metro 6R4. It was in 1986 that the rally moved to July from early November and in 1988 the rally event made another move, this time location - to the more southerly forests of Crychan and Esgair Dafydd and Sarnau. It was in 1990 that the event ran in the BTRDA Gold Star Championship and for the first time, and has continued to do so right to this year.

In 1995 a certain Andy Burton was leading in the fabulous Alfa-Ferrari until the last stage when he slid off, but he was back the following year, to ensure victory, in his Alpha-Ferrari’s last appearance. He was back in 1998, again co-driven by Rob Morgan, to take the winner’s podium and the overall title in their Peugeot 306 Special. Since then Andrew has returned many times, ending up winning the rally more times than any other.

Since 2000 the rally has been held in this region of Wales, with a series of notable names competing. One of those was in 2004, when a young Matthew Wilson with co-driver Scott Martin followed in his father’s footsteps, although not managing to beat his father 3 minute win. In 2006, we saw an unknown 17 yr old Norwegian take victory, just two days after passing his UK driving test – Andreas Mikkelson, with Ola Floene, who are currently leading the IRC championship. Although at the point of writing they are only 6 points ahead of team mates, Jan Kopecký and Dresler Pavel, so the results from the Rally San Marino could have changed all that.

You can read the full history of the rally at: www.nickygriststages.co.uk/history.

Shaun Gardener and Ben Innes

Although leading the championship with a 100% finishing record this year, the 2006 champions are being chased hard and you are likely to see some great action from the pairs Mitsubishi.

Hugh Hunter and Andy Marshbank

The chasing pair is the 2008 champions, who won the recent Dukeries Rally for the first time. After competing in only 3 of the 5 rounds so far, winning all 3, they are in with a great chance of securing the Rally Series IN THEIR Ford Focus WRC. But with 2 already dropped there is no margin for error left!

Roger Chilman and Bryan Thomas

Despite a much awaited win on the Plains, a retirement on the Malcolm Wilson and a non-start in the Somerset Stages, has left these two fighting hard and slowly climbing the points to contention for the lead. Watch out for these two – they are on a charge.

Patrick Naylor and Ian Lawrence

The chasing pair is the 2008 champions, who won the recent Dukeries Rally for the first time. After competing in only 3 of the 5 rounds so far, winning all 3, they are in with a great chance of securing the Rally Series IN THEIR Ford Focus WRC. But with 2 already dropped there is no margin for error left!

Jamie Anderson and Ella Flynn

Although lying in 5th overall, their position moves them into second place for the Production Cup, and they are now serious contenders for the title win

With five of the eight rounds of this year’s REIS – Get Connected BTRDA Rally Series having already taken place, the race to succeed Andy Burton for the

Gold Star Championship title is still wide open.

Page 22: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme

As for Gardener and Innes, the Dukeries represented a step forward in the performance of their reliable but under-performing Mitsubishi Evo 5.9 car that has dogged the year so far. However after a lot of work since the Plains the car is beginning to improve and after a day long battle with Naylor and Lawrence, only concluding with an 8 second advantage, it is clear that Gardener and Innes are beginning to relax a little and enjoy the championship. However, if any rally could catch them out it is t h i s one, with Naylor and Lawrence determined to take the title.

In the absence of Matt Edwards who was otherwise engaged (well, getting married actually!) on the day, another solid run on the Dukeries saw Jamie Anderson/Ella Flynn overhaul the groom and move into runners-up spot in the overall Championship, Matt & Sam Collis still hold 3rd and will be back today in an attempt to reassert their authority. All in all, we have a very interesting few months in prospect but, unless Hugh Hunter and Andy Marshbank are able to continue his winning streak through to the conclusion of the year, the chances of equalling – or even beating - Andy Burton’s winning score of 177 points (from a possible 180) in 2011 are slim but not unconceivable.

Matthew Robinson/Nigel Hutchinson in their Escort MkII seem to be getting to grips with the BTRDA Silver Star Championship. Good results on the Wyedean and Malcolm Wilson were followed up by maximum scores on both the Somerset Stages and Plains, and they come to the Nicky Grist Stages leading the table, despite not attending the Dukeries. Defending champions Allan McDowall/Gavin Heseltine opted to forego

the long trip down to Somerset, but consistently good scoring on each o f the other four events has kept

their Opel Kadett in touch with the leaders – even more so

following the Dukeries and so they come to the Nicky Grist

in a good place to attack the leaders.

Julian Wilkes/Will Rutherford-Child began their Millers Oils BTRDA

1400 Championship campaign at some pace. Their Nova VXR 190 took maximum scores – and excellent finishes - on each of the first three rounds but, Justin Lawson/Paul Hargreaves pipped them to the post on the Plains before Wilkes/Rutherford-Child discovered they needed to replace their rear shock absorbers. The Lawson/Hargreaves challenge was halted on the Dukeries after a close encounter with a bank broke their Nova’s front suspension on the first stage, leaving Wilkes to win the category by a minute and a half after 38 miles of stages.

After the Dukeries, the rallyschool.co.uk BTRDA Rally First Championship sees the top two drivers on identical points, the difference being that Cameron Davies has four scores to Tom Jordan’s five. However, they were both upstaged by Joe Evett on the Dukeries – his MG ZR has only finished two events so far, but it has won both of them.

Mick Smith’s Nissan Micra is third but he, too, is unable to shake off the attention of the similar car of Aaron McClure which has amassed a similar points total, and Harry Threlfall is only one point behind the pair of them.

Guess we are all in for a great bit of rallying!
